Taylor Swift’s Label Inks Groundbreaking Deal With Clear Channel

Artists on Big Machine Records will now receive payment every time their songs are played on Clear Channel radio stations. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: Getty Images Taylor Swift is in a brand-new relationship. No, she isn’t dating some hot Hollywood star. Instead, Swift’s label, Big Machine Records, has just inked a deal with Clear Channel that will allow artists on the label to get paid for songs played on their radio stations. The label, as well as the performers on it — including heavy hitters like Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts and Reba McEntire — will share the revenue with Clear Channel. Before this deal, the label and its performers did not collect royalties when their songs were played on terrestrial radio; only songwriters and publishers did. Internet radio stations, however, already do pay performers and labels when their songs are played. Under the new deal, Clear Channel will be able to limit payments for songs streamed online, which will enable the growth of digital radio. “Not only does this partnership enable Big Machine to participate in terrestrial broadcast revenues, but we are also helping to grow digital radio,” Scott Borchetta, the label’s president and CEO, said. “[It’s] a great opportunity for all of us and a breakthrough opportunity for Big Machine artists.” But reportedly, it won’t end there. Aceshowbiz.com further reports that Clear Channel will approach more labels for similar deals and Big Machine may ink more of these with other radio conglomerates. “Today, 98 percent of our listening is terrestrial broadcast and 2 percent digital — with record labels and artists only paid for the 2 percent,” John Hogan, chairman and CEO of Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, added in a statement about the landmark deal. “This new agreement expands label and artist participation from just digital to terrestrial broadcast radio revenue in one comprehensive framework that will give all of us a great incentive to drive the growth of the digital radio industry and allow everyone to participate financially in its growth.” This coup for Swift comes just months after she was named the top earner of 2012 by Billboard magazine on their “Music’s Top 40 Money Makers” list . Swift sits at #1 thanks to reported earnings of $35.7 million in the 2011 calendar year. She ranks so high due to quadruple-platinum-plus sales of Speak Now and its accompanying tour, which grossed $88.5 million in the U.S. alone. But she’s hardly resting on her laurels. She is currently hard at work on her follow-up to the release . There is no word yet on when it might drop. Related Videos MTV First: Taylor Swift Related Artists Taylor Swift

Does Nicki Minaj’s ‘Starships’ Make Her Any Less Hip-Hop?

In the wake of Minaj’s feud with Hot 97, MTV News examines what real hip-hop is and who gets to decide. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Ronald Martinez/ Getty Images A funny thing happened on the way to Summer Jam. All hip-hop hell broke loose after an off-the-cuff comment by a radio DJ led rap’s reigning queen to pull out of the year’s biggest rap concert. Nicki Minaj versus Hot 97 has no doubt become the biggest rap gossip of the week, but once the drama subsides, an eternal discussion will still linger: What is real hip-hop? And who gets to decide? In one corner there’s rap purist and Hot 97 radio personality Peter Rosenberg, who trashed Nicki’s RedOne-produced crossover machine “Starships” in front of concertgoers just hours before she was scheduled to take the stage. In the other corner there is Nicki Minaj , whose pop success has made her a punching bag for critics who turn their noses up at anything without a James Brown sample. Hot 97’s famous tagline is “where hip-hop lives,” and in the radio world that pretty much rings true, though underground artists like Action Bronson, Skyzoo and the Immortal Technique could make a case otherwise. Minaj is technically rapping (and singing) on the fist-pumping “Starships,” and while the Barbie has always been classified as a hip-hop artist, the song didn’t become a top five Billboard single with urban-radio spins alone. Still, Hot 97 does play the record. If it is judged solely against the boom-bap DJ Premier portion of the genre, then “Starships” isn’t really a hip-hop record, but the track’s pounding bass and electro-pop dance beat is not totally detached from rap’s early days. Afrika Bambaataa’s iconic “Planet Rock,” lifted from Kraftwerk’s “Trans-Europe Express,” was centered around dance and not dusty samples or deep and intricate lyrics. In the 1980s, the Jungle Brothers built much of their discography around house and dance music, and they were one of the most celebrated hip-hop groups of their day. Hell, you can even trace Nicki’s penchant for wearing over-the-top costumes back to Bambaataa, so to suggest that “Starships” isn’t real hip-hop is an absolute statement and isn’t entirely accurate. Now to call “Starships” “wack” is a qualitative judgment and one widely held by hard-core rap fans — so there is some basis to Rosenberg’s charge. On her latest, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, Nick essentially splits her sound down the middle. On one side, Euro-inspired dance anthems dominate, while on the other side there are hard-core rap joints. For every “Starships” there is a “Beez in the Trap” or “Roman Reloaded,” which builds its beat around nine-millimeter gunshot sound effects. Nicki recognizes that she toes hip-hop’s undefined line, but relentlessly holds on to her rap roots. “I’m still me, hip-hop culture is still in my heart,” Minaj told MTV News back in April. “That can never leave me. I know I’m always gonna be street, because I can’t pretend to be street.” When she phoned in to Power 105’s Breakfast Club morning show on Tuesday, Nicki insisted that she wasn’t planning to perform “Starships” at Summer Jam. Instead, she planned to rock more fitting tracks and parade out a who’s who of hip-hop favorites during her set. Nas, Lauryn Hill, Lil Wayne, Cam’ron, 2 Chainz and Foxy Brown were just some of the guests with whom Minaj planned to share her stage. Ironically, it could have ended up the realest hip-hop moment of the year. Tune in to “RapFix Live” on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com as “Yo! MTV Raps” hosts Ed Lover and Doctor Dre weigh in on the debate. Related Artists Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj Blasts Radio Station, Defends Concert Pull Out

Nicki Minaj has some NSFW words for 97.1 FM. The rapper appeared opposite Funk Master Flex on that New York radio station this morning and addressed the beef she has with another station DJ, Peter Rosenberg, that led to her canceling her appearance at the Hot 97 Summer Jam on Sunday. That last-minute decision stemmed from Rosenberg’s remarks to open the concert two days ago, when he introduced the first act by saying: “I know there are some chicks in here waiting to sing along with Starships later. I’m not talking to y’all now. F–k that bulls–t.” Encouraged by Lil Wayne, who was on hand to hear Rosenberg slam his friend, Minaj pulled out of her appearance and says in the interview it was a matter of “respect.” She also says many other naughty words. Black Congressman Artur Davis Switches From Democratic To GOP…”I Can’t Support Barack Obama” [Video]

Artur Davis Switches From Democratic Party For GOP The political conversion of Artur Davis made national headlines as the former Democratic congressman from Birmingham announced his decision to become a Republican in Virginia. The GOP welcomed Davis, once a top surrogate to President Barack Obama. “The fact that he has the courage to analyze the problems with the current administration on the issues of unifying diverse interests in America and creating jobs tells me this is a guy with a lot of principle,” Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell, a Republican, told the Washington Post. In Alabama, where Davis suffered a painful loss in his 2010 bid for governor , leading Democrats had a different view. “In defeat, we have seen the real Artur Davis — a man with no principles, and no understanding of what it means to be a statesman and public servant,” said state Rep. Craig Ford, D-Gadsden, the House Minority Leader. “Artur Davis has no principles, and will say anything to advance his own career.” Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh said Davis can expect plenty of abuse from Democrats as a result of his switch. “Some people are being cynical and are saying, ‘Well, he’s just doing an Arlen Specter. He’s just switching parties because he knows he can’t win as a Democrat,’” Limbaugh said on his radio show Thursday. “I don’t care. I listen to what he’s saying. This is an African-American who is setting himself up for Uncle Tom status. This guy is going to join the ranks of Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas and Shelby Steele. He’s going to be persona non grata in the Democrat Party.” Peep Davis’ reasons for his switch and discuss… Source

Gotye To Release ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ Remix Album

Australian singer also prepping U.S. tour and re-release of his 2006 album. By Gil Kaufman Gotye Photo: Eleven Gotye has scored the longest-running #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Somebody That I Used To Know.” So if one hit is good, 10 must be better, right? That seems to be the logic behind the upcoming release of a “Somebody” remix album, which, according to The Hollywood Reporter , is scheduled to drop on iTunes June 8 and feature reworkings of the song by Adrock, Tiesto, Gang of Colours, Bibio, M-Phazes, Faux Pas, 4Frnt, Sneaker For, Dan Aux and Miami Nights 1984. “Somebody” just marked its seventh week at #1, passing the year’s other inescapable single, fun.’s “We Are Young,” which held the top spot for six weeks. And if you’re psyched about that Gotye bounty, you’ll be even more excited to hear that the singer’s Australia-only 2006 sophomore album, Like Drawing Blood , will get re-released in the U.S. in July. But wait, there’s more! Gotye will kick off a 33-date North American tour on August 22 in Denver, Colorado at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre with support from Chairlift, Missy Higgins and Zammuto, but, alas, not Kimbra, the other voice heard on “Somebody.” Along the way, the tour will take Gotye to a number of landmark events and venues, including the Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival, Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre, New York’s Radio City Music Hall, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and Austin, Texas, where he’ll wrap things up on October 13 with a slot at the Austin City Limits festival. One Direction Keep Fans Screaming All Night On Tour

U.K. pop sensations hit New Jersey’s IZOD Center for a sell-out show on Friday packed with hits and rocking covers. By Sarah Brotherton One Direction perform in East Rutherford, NJ Photo: Uptin Saiidi/MTV News EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — Maybe you’ve heard their songs on the radio or caught their TV performances on the “Today” show or “Saturday Night Live” , but nothing quite captures the success of One Direction like the screams. On Friday night, thousands of fans from across the tri-state area hit the IZOD Center, filling the 19,000-capacity arena for the U.K. pop sensation’s latest stop on their headlining Stateside tour. They were there to experience a new wave of a British Invasion, and they weren’t disappointed. Even before the show started, there was an excitement and energy in the air as Directioners — young and old alike — rushed into the building wearing homemade T-shirts, carrying posters and sporting body paint declaring their love for their favorite 1D members, be it Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson or Harry Styles. After two opening acts and a few warm-up songs, including Busta Rhymes and RUN DMC classics, One Direction finally hit the stage as the crowd jumped to its feet. Opening with ” Na Na Na,” the boys — dressed in the matching theme of red, white and blue, but each with their own signature touch — hit the harmonies hard. The concert followed a seasonal theme with corresponding video and costumes to match. A few songs in, Harry told the sell-out crowd, “I think this is our “biggest show” as a band!” which sent fans screaming all over again. Veering from their chart-topping debut album, Up All Night, each 1D member took a shot at a solo cover of some of their favorite songs, including the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Got a Feeling” and the Gym Class Heroes hit “Stereo Hearts.” The boys then sat on stools as they serenaded fans with “Moments.” Cell phone lights took the place of lighters as the audience sang every word of the ballad. After a quick change into the next outfit (and the next season), 1D proceeded with some of their more popular hits, including “More Than This” and the album’s title track, “Up All Night.” The set soon moved onto the live-tweeting portion of the show, where fans tweeted questions from the audience to their favorite bandmember. Then Liam showed off some beat-boxing skills and Harry attempted to do the worm before the guys were back at it with another cover, this time the hit Kings of Leon song “Use Somebody.” To end the night, 1D gave a shout-out to their impressive backing band and closed with singles “One Thing” and, of course, their #1 hit “What Makes You Beautiful.” But a perfect evening of hearty pop wouldn’t be complete without an encore! So the boys returned to perform “I Want” to the delight of their devoted fans. If you missed the 1D performance on Friday, fear not Directioners, a full list of U.S. tour dates is available on their official website . Full Set List : 1. “Na Na Na” 2. “Stand Up” 3. “I Wish” 4. “I Got a Feeling”; “Stereo Hearts”; “Valerie”; “Torn” 5. “Moments” 6. “Gotta Be You” 7. “More Than This” 8. “Up All night” 9. “Tell Me a Lie” 10. “Everything About You” 11. “Use Somebody” 12. “One Thing” 13. “Save You Tonight” 14. “What Makes You Beautiful” 15: “I Want” (Encore) Are you going to check out 1D on tour?
