Coldplay’s New Album About ‘Addiction,’ ‘OCD’

Frontman Chris Martin tells the BBC that fifth album is ‘thinly veiled account of what happens within the group.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Coldplay Photo: Eamonn McCormack/ WireImage Coldplay may just bust apart their image as sensitive, hipster-dad rock gods with their fifth LP. Frontman Chris Martin recently told BBC’s Radio 1 that the platinum-selling collective’s follow-up to the 2008 smash Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends is inspired by the band’s brushes with personal vices and industry drama. The singer and pianist said the record’s content touches on “love, addiction, OCD, escape and working for someone you don’t like.” Martin also described the project as a “thinly veiled account of what happens within the group.” However, Coldplay fans needn’t fret that the upcoming untitled effort — which Martin denied is a concept album as he previously asserted — is an express ticket to Bummerville. The “Clocks” crooner maintained the album “also has a lot of uplifting stuff. It’s supposed to be about life, the good stuff and the bad stuff. Everything.” The band’s drummer Will Champion backed up Martin’s description, aptly using a marital anecdote to explain the emotional complexity of the record. “There’s a phrase which my wife told me from a book, I can’t remember which book, but a man is asked, ‘Are you married?’ And he says, ‘Yes, of course I’m married. I have a wife, kids, the whole catastrophe,’ ” he said.”Catastrophe just means something big and seismic but not necessarily bad. It’s all about embracing the whole thing. Appreciating the good and bad and realising it’s all part of life.” The group are once again teaming up Markus Dravs and Roxy Music legend Brian Eno, who produced Viva, for the project. The album currently has no release date. Are you looking forward to Coldplay’s new album? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Coldplay

New Kids On The Block And Backstreet Boys Add 16 Tour Dates

Boy-band supergroup NKOTBSB will hit even more cities on first joint tour. By Gil Kaufman Backstreet Boys’ A.J. McLean Photo: Astrid Stawiarz/ Getty Images Absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder. And when it’s two of the biggest boy bands in modern history that you’re missing, go ahead and double that longing. That might explain why the boy-band supergroup NKOTBSB (otherwise known as New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys) have announced plans to nearly double the amount of dates on their first-ever joint tour. After initially announcing two dozen dates slated to kick off June 2 in Uncasville, Connecticut, and run through a July 9 date in Vancouver, British Columbia, the scream-feeder pairing will now stay on the road through July 30 due to what promoter Live Nation called “overwhelming” demand for tickets. The 41-date swing will now wrap up with a July 30 show at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The additional dates include shows in Minneapolis, St. Louis, Orlando, Cleveland and Atlantic City. In their biggest tune-up to date for the outing, the group rocked it in front of millions on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” eight months after they set fans’ hearts aflutter by performing onstage together for the first time at a sold-out NKOTB show at Radio City Music Hall in New York in June. Then they knocked it out of the park in November when they closed the American Music Awards with a medley that included Backstreet’s “I Want It That Way” and NKOTB’s “Hangin’ Tough.” The tour will feature appearances by all but one of the groups’ original members: Joey McIntyre, AJ McLean, Jordan Knight, Howie Dorough, Jonathan Knight, Donnie Wahlberg, Brian Littrell, Danny Wood and Nick Carter (BSB’s Kevin Richardson left the group in 2006). Tickets for the new dates go on sale on January 15. NKOTBSB tour dates:

Foo Fighters To Return This Spring With ‘Massive’ New Album

Yet-untitled record is shaping up to be their heaviest to date. By James Montgomery The Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage The Foo Fighters , for the majority of their career, have been the kind of band that only operates on a really, really huge level (witness their two-night stand at London’s Wembley Stadium in 2008 for proof of this, or even the sprawling, double-disc In Your Honor album). So when Dave Grohl is saying that their new album is, well, “massive,” you’re probably going to notice. On Tuesday (January 4), Grohl spoke to BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe about the Foos’ still-untitled new album (which they had apparently just finished the night before, according to a celebratory tweet ), and from the sound of things, it’s going to be a big deal. “There’s 11 songs and, front to back, there’s not one sleepy ballad,” Grohl said. “The fact that we did it without any computers, it was just really simple. It just sounds massive. It’s different to any other Foo Fighters album, because it just sounds big. It was really inspiring.” The band began work on the album — which Grohl said will be hitting stores “in spring” — last September. They teamed up with super-producer Butch Vig (Nirvana’s Nevermind ), former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and, judging by the photo he posted on the band’s Twitter account, frequent Nirvana collaborator/former Foo Pat Smear too. But rather than go for a big studio sound, the band opted for a much, well, simpler approach. “It was really in my garage,” Grohl said. “You could put a minivan in there and that’s it. We entered into this project with a direction. The first song we started recording, the tape just started shredding.” And judging by the early results — a 10-second snippet of a song called “White Limo” the band tweeted on Monday — Grohl isn’t kidding about the massive part. Or the rough-around-the-edges garage bludgeon, either. This really could be their heaviest work to date. And now, with the recording out of the way, the Foos can focus on more important tasks — like picking the first single. “I don’t even know what the single is going to be,” Grohl said. “It’s hard to choose because it sounds like there’s more than one.” What are you expecting from the new Foo Fighters album? Justin Bieber plays Santa to ailing Atlanta kids

What do Justin Bieber and Santa Claus have in common? No, it isn’t long, white facial hair and shakable bellies. It’s the fact that both go the extra mile for kids in need. A story is breaking this Christmas Eve about Bieber’s efforts to assist children in the Atlanta area. Reportedly the pop star, at the urging of deejays at Q100, invited his fans to stuff his tour buss with toys that were donated to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “Within hours, the bus began to fill up with toys for the ailing children, helped by the radio station’s on air promotions and Bieber’s own publicity juggernaut: his Twitter account,” PopEater reports. “I think that it doesn’t really matter what you do,” the pop superstar said. “As long as you’re helping other people, why not do it?” What better message can you think to send this holiday season?

Mariah Carey Expecting Twins, Nick Cannon Confirms

‘We are having twins,’ Cannon said on his radio show on Thursday. By Jocelyn Vena Mariah Carey Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images After accidentally calling her baby bump “they,” Mariah Carey had everyone speculating that she and Nick Cannon were having twins. And on his radio show on Thursday morning (December 16), Cannon confirmed as much. “We are having twins,” he told his listeners. He said that while the couple has been trying to keep details about the pregnancy as private as possible, Carey let the news slip to the president and first lady when she spoke to them backstage at TNT’s “Christmas in Washington 2010” on Sunday. “They, ironically enough, questioned my wife about, you know, ‘So, what are you having, are you having twins?’ ” he recalled of the conversation Carey had with the Obamas. “And at this point, she hadn’t told anybody anything because doctors advised us to keep it to ourselves until we get further along. And because of the excitement, because of the emotion, she was overwhelmed [and] she shared with the president and first lady that we are having twins.” On Wednesday, Cannon danced around the twins question in an interview. “It’s a touchy issue, because you never want to speak on too much stuff too early, but my wife, at one time, she referred to her stomach as ‘they,’ and that probably wasn’t the wrong thing for her to do,” he said to E! News . “That’s all I’m gonna say.” The couple has yet to reveal the due date, but Carey admitted back in October that finally telling everyone she was pregnant after months of speculation was a “relief.” “I feel like it made everyone else around me a little more relaxed,” she said on Cannon’s radio show about making the announcement. “I feel like they were extra super-cautious about everything, yet not, because they didn’t know they were allowed to be.” Related Artists Mariah Carey Nick Cannon
