‘American Idol’ Brings The Pressure On Group Night

Early favorites Jacee Badeaux, Brett Loewenstern, Lauren Alaina survive, while other hopefuls went down in flames. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler, Jenniger Lopez and Randy Jackson at “American Idol” Hollywood Week Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Group night on “American Idol” is notoriously brutal. It’s full of attitude, fighting, ragged nerves and exhaustion. And that’s just from the audience at home watching the ridiculous diva behavior onscreen. But after pulling an all-nighter, a number of this year’s picks to click, including teens Jacee Badeaux and Lauren Alaina, as well Chris Medina, James Durbin, Brett Loewenstern and Chelsee Oaks, survived to sing another day, while some early favorites went down in flames, unable to handle the pressure. On Wednesday night’s (February 16) show, producers figured they’d up the ante this year on the contestants by telling them, after they’d already formed their groups, that they must be comprised of a mix of singers from day one and day two of last week’s Hollywood eliminations . That sent the 168 remaining wannabes scrambling to rework their sets. The first two segments were devoted to showing the high school lunchroom nightmare of singers desperate to find someone’s group to join and facing heart-crushing rejection at every turn. Then, with just 10 hours to perfect their songs amid the din of nearly 170 voices roaring at once, contestants grabbed any space they could, from bathrooms to parking garages, and got to work. The pressure almost claimed the fragile Ashley Sullivan, who came close to leaving the show, while 15-year-old Jacee Badeaux was booted from his group in the middle of the night and several other singers either got dumped or bailed on their ensembles at the 11th hour. On the verge of breaking up because they couldn’t find a day-two person, redheaded bullied belter Brett Loewenstern ‘s quartet was saved when they picked up Badeaux. When the singers finally got a chance to, well, sing, there were plenty of new or little-seen faces who shone. Among them were New Jersey auditioner and makeup artist Pia Toscano, 22, who did her sultry best on Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” in a trio that got the day started off right with yeses all around. Male diva Jordan Dorsey bailed on his group to join up with Robbie Rosen and sing a doo-wop version of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” setting up an intense rivalry with his old cohorts, but getting sweet revenge by moving on. His old pals, though, survived the breakup as well by nailing Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You.” Nobody wanted to be in a group with overconfident Tiffany Rios the night before, so the judges allowed her an exception to form a duo with tattooed blonde Jessica Yantz. “It was really bad,” Randy Jackson said, though, after the pair made a hot mess of Beyonc

American Idol Hollywood Week: My Heart Barely Goes On

Confession! I forgot something about the first episode of Idol ‘s “Hollywood Week,” which in many ways is my favorite stretch of the season: You sometimes don’t see nearly enough singers, and for that you feel shafted. I know I do! Mathematician Ryan Seacrest claimed 168 people survived the first cut, but we only saw a meager sliver of that swath. Let’s slice up as many of the remaining candidates as possible and figure where our allegiances lie. (Spoiler: I hate some of them!)

Jennifer Lopez Has Landed On Planet Earth And Discovered Lil Wayne: “He’s Really Good, He Might Be The Best…”

Being on American Idol has really opened up a window for Jennifer Lopez , so she can know what’s going on. In a recent interview with Angie Martinez, J.Lo speaks on Lil Wayne as if she is hearing his music for the first time… SMH The Latina diva told Hot 97’s Angie Martinez that she works up a sweat to Weezy. “I was working out yesterday and I was listening to Lil Wayne and I was just like, ‘Wow. He really says some sh—,’” she said. “But I was just listening to what he was saying and I really enjoyed it. He might be one of the best out there right now. He might be the best. He’s really good.” Her love for Young Money doesn’t end there. J.Lo also has a soft spot for Nicki Minaj, and while she hasn’t heard Pink Friday in its entirety, she’s still a fan. “I love her. I haven’t heard the whole album, but I’ve heard her stuff that’s been on the radio and stuff like that. I really enjoy it,” she revealed. Jennifer Lopez is still probably looking for new tracks for her album that she is currently working on at the moment. Don’t be surprise if Nicki or Wayne happen to pop up on a track. In other Jennifer Lopez news, the American Idol panel of judges appeared on Oprah via satellite. The show is in its 9th season and only one original judge stands along with Ryan Seacrest. Oprah wanted to know what it’s like breaking peoples hearts and dreams, here’s what the judges had to say:

American Idol Top 3 Auditions: Hail to the Intern!

Just how possible is it to like the audition rounds of American Idol ? 35%? Or so? Less? They’re such unending trials of schmaltz, nerves, and cruelty, packing none of the torch-song determination of the competitive weeks. American Idol ‘s supposed to make us say, “I want to live ” and not “I want to cry for the rate of idiocy in the heartland.” Oh, Milwaukee. The tryouts in Wisconsin’s most beer-friendly city were fine, but only these three auditions (including a young lady I will soon call Harmonic-a Lewinsky) made the evening worth our cheeseheaded devotion.

‘American Idol’ Experts Talk Steven Tyler, Early Faves

‘Idol’ watchers praise New Orleans standouts and a Simon-less panel that seems to ‘having a blast.’ By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson on the season premiere of “American Idol” Photo: FOX Despite less-than-stellar initial ratings, “American Idol” is coming out of the blocks for its 10th season with something even more important than audience share, particularly for a reality show hitting late middle age, and that’s buzz. With a format that is well-beyond familiar by now, the injection of fresh blood via new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez has amped up the watercooler talk for a show that some had predicted was on the decline. Despite fears that the show would stumble without the harsh guiding hand of departed go-to judge Simon Cowell, MTV News’ , said instead of mourning the loss of King Cowell, he’s praising the rise of Tyler. “If anything, Steven Tyler’s wacky addition proved that it’s not a ‘mean judge’ that keeps me jazzed for ‘Idol.’ It’s an unhinged one,” said Cantiello about the entertaining, unpredictable shenanigans pulled out by Tyler in the first two nights of audition episodes this week. “Truth be told, I never realized how much I missed Paula [Abdul] last year. Tyler’s colorful language, zany metaphors and deafening jangly man-jewelry was just the entertaining wild card the two-night premiere needed to give it a must-see facelift.” Cantiello was glad that the new trio, which also includes sole returning judge Randy Jackson, didn’t fall into the same old “mean Simon” and “too-nice Paula” tropes. Lopez easily mixed Abdul’s sweetness with an undercurrent of Cowell’s honesty, while Tyler deftly pinwheeled between wacky Paula-isms amid stinging putdowns. And already he’s delivered one of the season’s top lines in his zinger to belcher Michael Perotto courtesy of “Tommy Boy”: “Did you eat a lot of paint chips as a child?” MJ Santilli, founder of one of the leading “Idol” blogs, MJsBigBlog.com , agreed with Cantiello, calling Tyler the “breakout” star on the show so far. “The new panel seems to be having a blast,” she said. “Fun has been sorely missing from the judges’ table the past couple of years. Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez’s enthusiasm has energized Randy Jackson. The fresh, new panel has me not missing Simon Cowell at all. Yet.” The real test, though, will be when the show goes live on March 1, which will provide proof of whether the apparent camaraderie among the three is real or the product of clever editing. But what about, you know, the singers, who are ostensibly the focus of the show? Santilli said the New Jersey singers on Wednesday night were mostly weak, but maybe that was because they held back the best stuff in order to let the new panelists shine and get some traction. “The New Orleans hopefuls had more standouts,” she said of Thursday night’s bunch. “At least, there are a couple that I remember, like the two teen tenors, Brett Loewenstern and Jacee Badeaux.” With the age limit dropped to 15 this year, Santilli suspects the producers are gunning for a teen winner in season 10, but with high schoolers having struggled in the live shows last year, it’s unclear if the young’uns can handle the pressure of performing in front of an audience. With less jokey singers and a higher talent ratio on Thursday night, Cantiello also thought New Orleans offered up some promising contestants we might see again in Hollywood. “I can’t say I’m looking forward to another three weeks of audition episodes, though,” he added. “Let’s get to the live shows already!” Do you agree with our experts about the first two nights of “Idol” auditions? American Idol in New Orleans: Sarah Sellers, Jacee Badeaux Impress

After getting off to a strong start in New Jersey, the new American Idol panel hit the Big Easy last night. As Steven Tyler continued to share random thoughts and jokes (our favorite: seeing a husky Randy Jackson in a photo from a high school sporting event and asking, “Which is the shot put?”), two contestants stood out. We’ve posted their audition videos below. Sarah Sellers : Large-lipped 28-year-old describes herself as a “marketing analyst by day, an aspiring singer and a food and music blogger.” Tyler adored her version of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love,” sang here: Sarah Sellers Audition Jacee Badeaux : A 15-year old summed up by J. Lo as being “So sweet and SOOOO CUUUUUTE!” Close your eyes, listen to him sing an Otis Redding classic and ask yourself: Couldn’t this be Justin Bieber ? Jacee Badeaux Audition
