Can Pia Toscano Or Thia Megia Win ‘American Idol’?

Experts weigh in on the top 12 women and their chances of making it through to the finals. By Gil Kaufman Pia Toscano Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Thursday night is when some “American Idol” dreams will come true, and a dozen or more will be crushed and sprinkled all across the seizure-inducing new IdolDome stage. But before all that carnage and celebration, we once again turned to some of our “Idol” experts to make some predictions about this season’s front-runners after the top 12 women did their thing on Wednesday night. Because he just can’t get enough of all things “Idol,” we turned to MTV News’ resident expert Jim Cantiello for his take on which ladies soared and which ones crashed and burned. Despite a few serious stinkers, JC said he continues to be shocked by the caliber of vocalists on the show this season. “You believe that these were the finest singers they found while on the road,” he said, noting two “atom-bomb-sized surprises” on Wednesday night. His first revelation was former housekeeper Lauren Turner, whose choice of Etta James’ “Seven Day Fool” he deemed perfect and full of attitude. “[She] stood out from the pack with her gravelly blues voice and in-your-face performance style,” he said. The other big surprise was show-closer Pia Toscano , the raven-haired beauty who sang the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand by You,” which he said, “dug deep and showed off her pitch-perfect pipes. Her range was sick, she had confidence, she effortlessly hit some major power notes. America stood up and noticed, as did the judges, who gave her the first official standing ovation of season 10.” If he had to pick a stand-out front-runner, though, at this point, Cantiello is still going with 16-year-old sassafras Lauren Alaina. “[It’s her] race to lose,” he said. “She’s everything ‘Idol’ is looking for. [She] got up onstage and looked like she could have commanded a live audience 10 times bigger without flinching. She has stage presence, a powerful voice, and she has a unique ability to live somewhere in between R&B, pop and country.” And while he thought the Carrie Underwood/Kelly Clarkson comparisons from Randy Jackson were not off the mark, Cantiello wondered if Alaina’s need to always be the center of attention might start grating on voters’ nerves? As for the other 16-year-old, Jim said Thia Megia has great pitch and a large fanbase, but he just can’t “picture her at the Nokia, covered in confetti. Unless she steps up her personality.” A great measure of how polarizing “Idol” contestants can be is the list of hot prospects submitted by Top Idol blog founder Melinda Green. One of her favorite performances was from this year’s obligatory oddball, Rachel Zevita. Though the judges thought Zevita blew it with her jazzy, off key take on Fiona Apple’s “Criminal,” Green loved it. “I really hope we see more of her. Alas, I think the judges would prefer sending through Ashthon Jones,” Green said of the Nashville native with the giant, blow-out hairdo whose sultry cover of Monica’s “Love All Over Me” earned raves. Green wasn’t sipping the “Idol” juice, though. “Every performance I’ve seen of this girl has been the same tired R&B diva wannabe shtick we’re treated to every season,” she said. She also liked Naima Adedapo, but is looking for more personality from the Erykah Badu-like singer and clothing designer. Lamenting how many of Wednesday night’s singers opted for tunes we’ve heard a dozen times in past seasons, Green said Karen Rodriguez made it interesting by singing half of Mariah Carey’s “Hero” in Spanish, but wondered if it was a bit too obvious pandering to judge Jennifer Lopez. Green agreed with Cantiello that Alaina might start to strike some viewers as a “precocious coquette as taught by her stage mother” and said despite her “perfect tone,” Thia Megia may not have the emotional maturity to connect with the songs she’s singing. “With this year’s emphasis on youth and the show’s clear aim of getting a viable female winner, we’ll be forced to see more of both Thia and Lauren Alaina,” she lamented. Bottom line, Green agreed that Toscano can go far and just needs to show more personality and that Turner has the goods that could take her deep into the competition. “She’s got the kind of voice I love,” she said, agreeing with Randy Jackson’s description of Turner as a mix of Amy Winehouse and Florence Welch. “If ‘American Idol’ wants current, they best do everything they can to keep Lauren Turner around. She’s the real deal, no theatrics, just raw talent.” Do you agree with our experts? Who do you think is headed for elimination tonight? Let us know in the comments below! Casey Abrams Works His ‘American Idol’ Magic On ‘I Put A Spell On You’

Judges want ‘more, more, more!’ of the unique contestant after Screamin’ Jay Hawkins cover. By Kara Warner Casey Abrams performs on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: FOX For some “American Idol” fans, the competition doesn’t really enter must-watch territory until the decision-making is turned over to the teeming masses and their texting, phone-calling and — new this year — online-voting power. Luckily for those holdouts, that portion of the show began Tuesday (March 1), when the top 12 guys took the stage and performed in front of a live audience for the first time this season. As is custom with “Idol” performance nights, there were several questionable song choices. (We’re looking at you, Jordan Dorsey, who unsuccessfully channeled Usher via “OMG,” and Tim Halperin doing a lackluster cover of Rob Thomas’ “Come on Over.”) There were also predictable ones, namely country crooner Scotty McCreery sticking to what he knows with “Letters From Home” and Adam Lambert wannabe James Durbin, who performed the first-ever Judas Priest song on the show. Thank goodness, then, for the evening’s final performer, Casey Abrams, and his showstopping, passionate performance of the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ classic “I Put a Spell on You.” Abrams — who is leading the dudes in our top 24 online poll and has wowed the judges previously with his style and unique instruments — brought down the house and the audience to its feet. “That’s as good as it gets,” Steven Tyler told Abrams. “Crazy good.” “You’re sexy, Casey,” Jennifer Lopez added. “Do you know that? Somebody wants it bad,” she said of Abrams’ obvious dedication to remain in the competition. “You came out with hunger and fire, and we just ate it all up,” she said. Randy Jackson agreed, commenting on the way Abrams transformed himself to embody the spirit of Hawkins’ historic tune. “You are really that one,” Jackson said. “You’re so different, so unique, I love it, I applaud it. More, more, more!” What did you think of Abrams’ performance? Do you want more, more, more? Tell us in the comments! Ho Sit Down: Now Jermaine & Randy’s Baby Mama Are Shopping A Jackson Reality Show

This b*tch… SMH. According to TMZ , now that Alejandra Jackson ‘s days of living off of Mama Katherine are numbered, she’s trying to find a new way to make the Jackson name pay her bills. Alejandra Jackson — baby mama to Jermaine and Randy — still refuses to move out of the Jackson family compound … but she is ready to spill family’s secrets on a new reality show … for the right price. Sources close to Alejandra tell us she’s in talks with several producing partners to star in a reality show along with her children. As we previously reported, she’s also working on a tell-all book — and we’re told she’s currently looking for a writer. TMZ broke the story … last month the Michael Jackson estate asked a judge to remove Alejandra and her kids — Jaafar, Jermajesty, Genevieve, Donte and Randy Jr. — from the home. That came after Alejandra turned down Katherine’s request to leave the house so it could be renovated. Katherine offered Alejandra a condo if she signed a confidentiality agreement — but Alejandra refused. Confidentiality agreements and tell-all books don’t go well together. We’re told Alejandra feels she needs to make money — from the reality show and the book — because the fathers of her children are behind on support payments. For instance, Jermaine owes Alejandra almost $100,000 in back child support. A hearing on whether Alejandra has to leave the house is set for March 15. Some people really just have no shame.

American Idol Hollywood Week: God Bless None of These Children

Hollywood week wrapped up last night, but most of the auditioners left the Kodak without fielding a word of terrible scrutiny. Let’s fix that! I’m going to be ruthless. When you destroy the classics of Ray Charles and, uh, Bobby Brown with your snarly showboating, I nominate myself to hurt your feelings. Onward.

Jacob Lusk Lets It Out On ‘American Idol’ With ‘God Bless The Child’

Judge Steven Tyler tells singer’s family to ‘be proud’ after emotional performance. By Adam Graham Jacob Lusk on “American Idol” on February 17, 2011 Photo: FOX Where has “American Idol” been hiding Jacob Lusk? The 23-year-old spa concierge from Compton, California, who had barely been seen prior to Thursday’s (February 17) episode, stepped out in a big way during the final Hollywood Week show , flooring the judges and his fellow contestants with one of the most stunning, stirring auditions ever seen on the “Idol” stage. Lusk, dressed in a pair of blue jeans and an untucked tuxedo shirt, hit the stage and gave a wildly original take on Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child” that had him flexing his range from deep lows to high highs, and scatting between the lyrics. His expressive face contoured around each of the words, as he clenched his eyes tightly and flexed his eyebrows to give emphasis to each of his lines. Jennifer Lopez looked puzzled by his unorthodox delivery at first, but it wasn’t long before all three judges were screaming in amazement, with Steven Tyler leaning back in his seat and getting Randy Jackson’s attention with a huge, “Woooooo-hoooooo!” Soon Lopez was whooping too, and all three judges — and a handful of Lusk’s fellow contestants — were on their feet in the auditorium. As Lusk wrapped up, Tyler turned to Lusk’s family in the audience and yelled, “Be proud!” Lusk jumped up and down onstage after seeing his peers’ and the judges’ reactions and blew a kiss to the crowd before quickly darting out of the room. Outside, he was greeted by Ryan Seacrest and members of his family, and Lusk appeared physically and emotionally spent. He fell into his family members’ arms and wailed with tears, before catching himself and explaining, “I’m not a cryer, I don’t cry.” Said Seacrest, “Coulda fooled me.” After the auditions, contestants were quarantined in four separate rooms as they awaited their fate from the judges. But it had to be a comfort for everyone in Lusk’s room to know they were grouped with the man who just brought down the house onstage like few had before him, and sure enough, when it came time to deliver the news, they all graduated through to the next round.
