Nas Gets ‘Nasty’ On New Single

The Good Life single looks back to the early days of hip-hop while staying firmly planted in the present. By Rob Markman Nas Photo: C. Flanigan/ Getty Images There’s no R&B chord, A-list feature or catchy chorus. On “Nasty,” the first single from Nas ‘ 10th solo album, The Good Life, the rapper takes things back to hip-hop basics: hard rhymes over an infectious loop. The song, which leaked online Monday night, is reminiscent of New York’s 1980s infamous park jams and starts out with a DJ asking the rapper’s native Queensbridge housing projects, “Are y’all ready to see Nasty Nas?” The question is, of course, rhetorical. After Nasir pushed rap’s envelope in 2008 on his politically charged Untitled album (originally titled N—er ), fans have clamored for new solo material. Thankfully, “Nasty” lives up to its name, as the track’s opening bars paint a picture of New York’s pre-gentrified crack era: “Late-night candlelight fiend with diesel in his needle/ Queensbridge leader, no equal.” Nas continues to toss numerous nods to the ’80s and ’90s on the Salaam Remi-produced track. There’s a shout to Queens street legend Thomas “Tony Montana” Mickens, the now-closed Tunnel nightclub and the late Notorious B.I.G. Still, “Nasty” isn’t just a trip down memory lane. In fact, Nas remains with his feet firmly planted in 2011 as he reflects on his growth from a wide-eyed boy looking out of his project window to rap’s upper echelon, while still leaving room to grow.”We ain’t going backwards, we’re staying forward though,” Nas said in a June interview with DJ Envy on MTV2’s Sucker Free. With the song’s lyrics, he stays true to that notion. “Silent rage, pristine in my vintage shades/ I’m not in the winters of my life or the beginning stage,” Nas spits before revealing his lustful interest in actress Antonique Smith, who played Faith Evans in the 2009 Biggie biopic “Notorious.” Nas continues to fire off quotables in rapid succession. “I’m so high, I never land like Mike Jackson’s crib” and “Your flow’s cheap as limousine liquor” are just a few examples of Nas’ spirited wordplay. If the new single is any indication of what fans can expect from the new Nas album, then for hip-hop fans, life is good. What do you think of Nas’ latest single? Share your reviews in the comments! Exclusive: What Is Tom Joyner’s REAL Beef With Foxy Brown???

The recent – and somewhat surprising – beef between Brooklyn rap diva Foxy Brown and radio vet Tom Joyner may go deeper than what fans have seen so far. According to our source, as Foxy herself stated via Twitter , the very notion that Tom Joyner’s staff had to kick the rapper off of his Fantastic Voyage cruise is a fabrication. “Foxy was never contracted to be on the ship for the duration of the cruise,” the source tells BOSSIP. “She was scheduled to leave the cruise on Friday morning, having performed on Thursday night.” The source reveals that what lies behind Tom Joyner’s allegations that Foxy became too difficult to deal with is what the rapper saw as she made her way back to her cabin around 4am Friday morning. Foxy allegedly spotted Joyner in the hallway, embroiled in a very private conversation with a man who looked “suspect,” shall we say. Foxy, who had some remaining tension with Tom from their recent interview, made her presence known by bursting into laughter. Foxy left the ship at 7am, and that afternoon, Tom was on air saying that the the known drama queen had to be put off the ship. But as our informant points out, Joyner has yet to reveal exactly how Foxy was “acting a fool”? Was this a preemptive strike on Tom’s part to discredit anything Foxy might have to say?

Petey Pablo Pleads Guilty To Gun Charges, Faces Up To 10 Years In Jail

Rapper was arrested in September for trying to board a plane with a firearm. By MTV News staff Petey Pablo Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage North Carolina rapper Petey Pablo faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty Wednesday to gun charges from trying to board a plane with a firearm on September 11, 2010, according to The Associated Press. According to original reports, Pablo (born Moses Barrett III) was arrested when security at Raleigh-Durham International Airport found a Smith & Wesson 639 in his carry-on luggage. According to reports, the rapper was on his way to Los Angeles to attend the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Pablo claimed he didn’t know the gun was in the bag but was still charged with possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and attempting to take a gun onto an aircraft. On Wednesday, the rapper — who is best known for his singles “Raise Up” and “Freek-a-Leek” — reached an agreement and pleaded guilty to the possession of a stolen firearm charge. The remaining two charges were dropped and the rapper faces sentencing in June. Prior to making his rap debut, Pablo served six years of a 14-year jail bid for armed robbery. In 2001, he released his debut album, Diary of a Sinner: 1st Entry, and saw the LP’s single “Raise Up” peak at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Three years later in 2004, he once again rose to prominence thanks to his hit single “Freek-a-Leek” (#7 on the Hot 100) from his sophomore album Still Writing in My Diary: 2nd Entry. That same year, Pablo appeared on R&B singer Ciara’s breakout single “Goodies.” He reappeared with a meager hit in “Show Me the Money,” a song from the soundtrack to the 2006 film “Step Up,” but Pablo has made little to no musical noise since.

Tru Life – real name Roberto Rosado, Jr. – who was once signed to Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella Records roster, pleaded guilty to gang assault following the death of Christopher Guerrero, who was killed in an attack at a Manhattan apartment building. A second man was left seriously injured. The rapper’s brother Marcus Rosado pleaded guilty to manslaughter and got his brother off a possible murder charge after admitting it was him – and not his sibling – who had stabbed both men. During sentencing in New York on Wednesday, the judge handed Tru Life eight years in jail and his brother 10. The rapper’s lawyer, Alan Abramson, said following sentencing, “Robert is extremely saddened by what happened. Mr. Guerrero did not deserve what happened to him.”
