Lil Wayne ‘Didn’t Understand’ His #7 Hottest MCs Ranking

‘Label me what you wanna label me,’ Weezy says during radio interview. By Alvin Blanco Lil Wayne Photo: John Parra/ WireImage Even while he was in the midst of his eight-month stay on Rikers Island, Lil Wayne still managed to land at #7 on MTV News’ 2010 Hottest MCs in the Game list. Weezy appeared on satellite-radio channel Shade 45 on Tuesday (December 14) and talked about what he considered to be a pretty low ranking. Host DJ Drama said he heard rumblings that, despite his incarceration, Wayne should have been higher on the list. Lil Wayne was #1 on the list in 2007 and had been in the top five until this year. Drama asked the rapper whether he was upset about where he fell on 2010’s list. “I was, I’m not gonna front, I was,” Weezy admitted. “I didn’t understand it. Somebody tried to explain it to me, like, ‘Nah, it was a list about this.’ They was trying to tell me it was some kinda, l don’t know. … It’s all good. Label me what you wanna label me; everybody know them n—as ain’t f—ing with me, man.” Drama then pointed out that Lil Wayne prot

Drake Is ‘Compiling Some Great Raps’ For Take Care

Best New Artist Grammy nod is the award that means the most, he tells TheSource.com. By James Dinh Drake Photo: FilmMagic While Drake is still collecting accolades for his debut LP, Thank Me Later — including Grammy nods and the #7 spot on MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 list — he’s still got an eye to the future. The Toronto MC recently spoke to TheSource.com about beginning work on Take Care while also looking forward to February’s Grammy Awards. “I’m just back home in Toronto, working like we used to do it,” the rapper said. “Set up shop in [producer] 40’s apartment. It’s really early though, I’m excited. A lot of the stuff that is out there, and rumored about the album is just mostly me being out there with people and realizing what great dudes and what talented people they are.” The lyricist isn’t sure who will have a hand in assisting with the project, but he has a few people in mind including DJ Premier. “I mean, I met DJ Premier at Yankee Stadium and I never would’ve thought that he would want to work, the way he expressed it to me,” Drake said. “Me and 40 were just so honored that we are extremely excited to hear what we can all craft together.” Just last month, Drake told to MTV News that he had completed two tracks for the sophomore effort. He also revealed that the project may also feature a guest spot from his friend Justin Timberlake. “My thing is I just wanna spit, man,” he told TheSource. “I’ve really been compiling some great raps, and I just want to get them out. I feel like I have paint cans stored in the room, and I’m just waiting for those producers to bring the blank canvases in, so I can just splash paint and make it a beautiful thing, whoever it may be. At the end of the day, I’m sure it will be something enjoyable to listen to.” It’s just that inspiration that has caused fans and critics to take notice, earning the rapper four Grammy nods, including Best New Artist, which Drake called “the one award that means most to me” because “it lets people know how early in our relationship we still are.” So, how does Drake feel about vying against fellow Canadian Justin Bieber for the coveted award? “I think being in that category with such stiff competition is such a great time marker for me,” he said. “It really even reminded me how young I am in this. With me and Bieber, we are two artists that used two new forms of getting discovered. We were found on the Internet in a way more independent fashion [than the] way people used to be discovered. We weren’t found in a showcase and signed to a label; we were discovered on a very grassroots ground level tool which now runs the world. We are Internet first artists. To make it from playing an acoustic guitar in your living room, or to make it from 40’s apartment to the Grammys, it’s one of the most inspiring things of our generation.” Are you excited for Drake’s sophomore album? B.o.B Plans ‘A Little Bit Of Magic’ For Grammy Nominations Concert

‘This year, all the success, all the doors that have been opened have really taken me by surprise,’ he tells MTV News of his own Grammy chances. By Kelley L. Carter, with reporting by James Lacsina B.o.B at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles Wednesday Photo: James Lacsina B.o.B is ready to hit the stage. He’s been performing one of the hottest songs all year long, so it’s only appropriate that he and Bruno Mars perform it one more time at Wednesday night’s (December 1) Grammy Nominations Concert at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. Earlier Wednesday, the rapper performed “Don’t Let Me Fall” on his own and, later, his big hit “Nothin’ on You” with Bruno Mars. “It was a really good way to kick it off and be more involved with the overall experience,” he said of the concert. B.o.B said he doesn’t have too many expectations about how the Grammy nominations might shake out, considering that this is his first year being involved. When asked if he might do something a bit different for his performance during the nominations special, the “Magic” MC joked, “Just a little bit of magic.” Bobby Ray has some predictions for his colleagues when it comes to Grammy night: “I think Cee Lo and Bruno Mars could win because of their musicality and what they brought.” But what about the rapper’s own chances? “If Bruno is nominated, I probably might be nominated also. It’s kind of a win-win situation for both of us,” he said of his collaborator. “This year, all the success, all the doors that have been opened have really taken me by surprise.” The nominations special airs Wednesday night on CBS at 10 ET/PT. The 53rd annual Grammys air live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 13, and will be broadcast on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Chrisette Michele Raves About Rick Ross Reunion On ‘So In Love’

‘Aston Martin Music’ MC returns the favor on Michele’s just-released album, Let Freedom Reign. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Hillary Crosley and Joel Hanek Chrisette Michele Photo: MTV News Chrisette Michele rocketed to the top of the charts in 2009 with her album Epiphany. In 2010, she beefed up her hip-hop cred by appearing on Rick Ross’ “Aston Martin Music.” Now, the rapper is returning the favor by making a cameo on her just-released album, Let Freedom Reign. “It was something I was playing around with, [and I] put it together,” she told MTV News about her latest collaboration with the MC, “So in Love.” “And when it was all done, I said, ‘Ross, can you drop a verse?’ He did, and now he’s a lovebird.” The smooth love jam is a follow-up to the big-pimpin’ track they released over the summer. But this time the duo aren’t singing about their love of a certain high-end luxury car; they are talking all about romance. “He’s a really nice guy,” she said of Ross’ tough exterior, before adding that working with the rapper has been quite the change of pace. “I’m just a regular suburbia girl from Long Island. I happened to get onto a hip-hop record, and the response is crazy.” Michele was very involved in the whole album, including the Ne-Yo-penned, Chuck Harmony-produced lead single “I’m a Star.” “I was the co-executive producer on it, and I wrote nine of the 10 songs,” she said. “So I feel really, really a part of it.” Have you checked out Chrisette’s new album yet? Jeremih And 50 Cent ‘Keep It Real Sexy’ In ‘Down On Me’ Video

‘We got a lot of sexy ladies, kept it classy,’ the ‘Birthday Sex’ singer tells MTV News on video set. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias 50 Cent and Jeremih on the set of their video for “Down On Me” Photo: MTV News When Jeremih returned with his sophomore effort All About You, the “Birthday Sex” singer wanted the set to feel familiar to fans and echo the notes he struck on his debut. Now, for his latest single “Down on Me,” Jeremih wants the video to match the song’s sultry feel. “The song itself is definitely for the clubs. We wanted to keep it real sexy for the ladies,” he told MTV News. “As an artist, there’s nothing like hearing your record in the club. The visual, we wanted to make sure when you see the video in the club, it portrays that message. So we got a lot of sexy ladies, kept it classy. … It’s going down.” 50 Cent lends his vocals to the track, and the G-Unit boss reiterated Jeremih’s claims. “It’s a pleasure to hear great music after you finished in the studio,” he explained. “Then you use your imagination and wonder how people are gonna embrace it. “Me, I got a different approach,” the rapper continued. “I’ll be like, ‘Ah, man, when n—as hear this, they gonna be sick. I’m back, baby!’ ” “Down on Me” is Jeremih’s second single from All About You, following the slow-burning “I Like.” The new song received a boost from 50 spoofing the track during an appearance on Chelsea Hander’s late-night show; the rapper appeared with YouTube star Keenan Cahill and lampooned the song in a bit that became a viral hit. Kanye West Is ‘Stepping Backwards’ For New Music, Q-Tip Says

‘He’s looking forward but reaching back, which is interesting,’ he tells XXL. By James Dinh Kanye West Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Utilizing Auto-Tune and the electro-pop trend, Kanye West took a musical departure with his last album, 808s & Heartbreak. But the rapper is heading back to his early roots with his new album, according to collaborator Q-Tip. “This album is, in a good way, going backwards,” Q-Tip told XXL magazine of the project. “He’s such an artist. He knows exactly what he’s doing. When he did [ 808s & Heartbreak ], that was such a departure from College Dropout. But now he’s stepping backwards, so this album will be more of a sonic extension of College Dropout and Graduation, but he’s doing it with a new attitude.” The Tribe Called Quest member explained that West is attempting to mix his sound of the past yet simultaneously cover new ground. “He’s looking forward but reaching back, which is interesting,” Q-Tip told the magazine. “It’s a calculated toe in yesterday’s water, if that makes any sense at all.” In July, ‘Ye spoke about the inspiration behind the yet-untitled project. “Everyone says all great art comes from pain, but I think my greatest art comes from excitement and joy,” he said. “It’s a completely different perspective about being extremely excited about stuff that is only cool to me.” The LP, which is due in stores later this fall, is set to feature additional production credits from DJ Premier, Pete Rock and No I.D. Lead single “Power” finds the rapper taking on the media, haters and everyone in between. As the project has gained momentum, West has treated fans to a slew of new tracks including “Monster,” featuring Jay-Z, Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj; “Devil in a New Dress” ; and “G.O.O.D. Friday,” featuring Common, Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Big Sean and Charlie Wilson. More than likely, West will perform his new material when he serves as the musical guest on the Bryan Cranston-hosted “Saturday Night Live” episode October 2.
