Howard Stern Debut Doesn’t Boost ‘America’s Got Talent’ Ratings

Despite the hype surrounding Stern’s debut, the show’s ratings are down more than 15 percent from last year. By Gil Kaufman Howard Stern Photo: MTV News Over the past week it has felt like Howard Stern was everywhere. The self-proclaimed “King of All Media” was doing his best to make that title sing in the lead-up to his debut as a judge on “America’s Got Talent,” by doing a rare publicity swing of talk shows and feature interviews. He was excited and he wanted America to be excited, and by the looks of the blanket ads, billboards and promotional stunts, NBC clearly thought that adding the controversial shock jock to the mix on the family-friendly show was going to be big news. Stern did his part
, delivering a warmer, fuzzier version of his outrageous radio persona on Monday night’s two-hour debut and earning almost universal praise
for his playful, personal touch. The ratings, however, were another matter. According to overnight figures from Nielsen, Monday’s show was seen by 10.3 million viewers and earned a 3.6 rating, which was solid, but meant that viewership was down 33 percent (from 15.3 million) and ratings fell 16 percent from last year’s debut (4.3). Stern spent a while on his SiriusXM satellite radio show on Monday tamping down expectations for the first night’s ratings, mixing a cocktail of his own self-deprecation with the cold-hard facts about the competition. According to Entertainment Weekly unlike last year, when “AGT” bowed at the end of May and was paired with the first season of “The Voice,” Monday night’s episode went up against the one-hour season finale of “How I Met Your Mother,” as well as the season finales of “Two and a Half Men” and “Mike & Molly.” Oh, and it also had to contend with the penultimate performance night on “Dancing with the Stars.” While the ratings may not have been the kind of slam-dunk success NBC was hoping for, Stern may have one less potential headache to deal with (for now). After lambasting NBC for hiring Stern for the show
, citing the broadcasting veteran’s more risqu

Britney Spears Drops Some X-Factor Cleavage

I guess now that Britney Spears is officially going to be a judge on the The X-Factor , I don’t really know what qualifies her to judge others but what do I know, we’re going to be seeing a whole lot more of her. I guess I’m alright with that, she seems to have gotten herself together and is looking pretty good. Here she is giving us a look at some quality cleavage in her tight little dress. I bet an on-air breakdown would do wonders for the ratings.

Miley Cyrus or Demi Lovato: The Next X Factor Judge?!?

With Britney Spears already on board , might Simon Cowell be giving up all notions of The X Factor as a singing competition? It’s hard not to think the producer is simply aiming to rake in the ratings, considering the latest name reportedly on the table to join season two as a judge: Miley Cyrus. Simply put, “there have been talks with Miley,” an X Factor insider tells Celebuzz, a rumor backed up by E! News. Both outlets also report that Fergie, Avril Lavigne and Demi Lovato are in the running to join Cowell, Spears and L.A. Reid on the panel. A decision will need to come within a month or so, in order for auditions to begin and The X Factor to premiere season two in September. What do you think of Miley Cyrus as a judge? Would she be a good choice? UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter now claims Lovato is the one to beat and is in “final negotiations” for the gig.

The Side-Eye: Shaunie O’Neal Releases “Basketball Wives” Statement Regarding Recent Ratchetness On The Show

She shoots… She spins… But does she score? Shaunie O’Neal Releases Statement Regarding Negative Depictions Of Black Women On “Basketball Wives” With the African-American community chomping at the bit over the negative depictions (fighting, lawsuits , mockery of monogamy) of Black women on “Basketball Wives” Shaunie O’Neal just had to say something… Via VIBE : As the executive producer of the controversial reality show Basketball Wives, Shaunie O’Neal released an exclusive statement on some of the unladylike behavior that has consumed recent episodes. Since the drama on the popular VH1 show has reached new levels (Jennifer Williams is suing Nia Crooks, Evelyn Lozada’s assistant, for assault), the BBW head expressed her personal thoughts on the matter. “I’m extremely happy that Basketball Wives continues to have another successful fourth season. As the ratings have been through the roof since our season opener, fans continue to tune into the lives of Evelyn, Tami, Jennifer, Royce, Suzie and myself. As there is always controversy and indifference projected on the show, because we are all individual personalities, I always hope that people will find that as much as you may agree or disagree with the opinions, the behavior, [and] even our different taste in shoes, you are taking a look inside the lives of four complete different women. I will never say I agree with some of the behavior between my girlfriends on the show, but if we were to edit certain things out the show would be scripted and not reality. As a woman of color with kids, I am very aware of myself, but I also have to be aware that my choices cannot be the same for everyone on the show and I have to respect that. I hope the fans feel they see a balance and know we have always been real with our stories, even though it may not always be a positive portrayal of adult women but real women nonetheless. I look forward to developing other media platforms in the future and hope that fans will continue to support.” Unlike some of her friends and cast mates, she chooses not to eclipse her good character by becoming physically violent. O’Neal wants to maintain her role as an example to young women, especially as she is a mother and businesswoman. She continuously gives back to the community and was, most recently, spotted lending a hand at the Los Angeles Mission for their annual Easter day festivities. *cough* Bullisht!*cough* There Shaunie goes again talking about balance. We peeped her lil attempt to show her Mom of the Year behavior a couple episodes back with Mimi’s birthday party but other than that it’s been a bunch of cussing and slapping and wine bottle throwing. Shaunie, let’s keep it real boo boo (in our Evelyn voice) bird’s of a feather flock together. Y’all can’t be that different. More On Bossip! ‘Bully’ Will Be Released Unrated

Weinstein Co. is releasing the documentary on bullying unrated in a protest against an R. By Gil Kaufman A Scene from “Bully” Actors, singers, politicians, educators and high school kids have been protesting the R rating given to the anti-bullying documentary “Bully, but the ratings board would not budge. So, instead of folding, frequently outspoken Weinstein Co. co-founder Harvey Weinstein has decided to release the film unrated. “The small amount of language in the film that’s responsible for the R rating is there because it’s real,” director Lee Hirsch said of the multiple f-bombs that landed the film its restricted rating, according to The Hollywood Reporter . “It’s what the children who are victims of bullying face on most days. All of our supporters see that, and we’re grateful for the support we’ve received across the board. I know the kids will come, so it’s up to the theaters to let them in.” The film depicts the painful results of school bullying and follows several families who’ve been impacted by bullying. But because it was given an R rating, it cannot be screened in middle and high schools. Weinstein began a public appeal of the rating last month, making the case that it would freeze out the very teens and others under 18 who most need to hear its powerful message. The rating war inspired 17-year-old Katy Butler to start a viral petition to get the decision changed. Not only did her movement win her a GLAAD Media Awards
over the weekend, but it also drew nearly

Jonah Hill Can’t Match Lindsay Lohan’s ‘SNL’ Ratings

Last week’s Lohan-hosted episode scored bigger ratings but fewer laughs. By Gil Kaufman Tom Hanks and Jonah Hill on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC The sketches were mostly funnier, Tom Hanks swung by to show off one of his two Oscar trophies and Stefon was in the house to giggle his way through another classic list of nightlife tips (seriously, google “hoombas”). Plus there was a sure-to-be-classic-but-so-wrong sketch about a scientist touting his breakthrough teaching an ape to talk that did not go the way anyone intended. In short, Jonah Hill had a pretty good night hosting “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend, but according to the Hollywood Reporter , he couldn’t quite reach the ratings heights set last weekend by Lindsay Lohan.
The magazine reported that the Hill episode, which featured two songs by the Shins, drew a 4.3 rating and a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demo, which was down 21 percent from Lohan’s turn last week. Of course, Lohan’s much-hyped return to the “SNL” stage was eagerly anticipated, but mostly for the curiosity factor of whether the fallen actress could pull it off. Critics savaged her stiff acting and obvious cue-card reading. But Hill was looser on his episode, poking fun at himself in a funny cold open about his wild awards-show run and Oscar nomination for “Moneyball” in which he claimed he was still a regular guy, only to treat his pals at “SNL” with contempt and actor-y imperiousness. The “21 Jump Street” star reprised his obnoxious six-year-old character Adam Grossman, who savaged his dad’s J-Date girlfriend during a tense Benihana dinner and took an endless barrage of tennis balls to the crotch in a painful digital short. A Liza Minnelli sketch fell flat, but people are probably going to still be scratching their heads all week about the Brutus sketch in which Hill was exposed as a scientist who taught an ape how to talk, only to be outed as a pervert by said ape. The highlight, though, was what seemed like a throwaway sketch at the end when Hill’s character hires a string quartet to serenade his wife on their anniversary, but then grabs the mic and starts inexplicably rapping to Coolio’s dead homie homage “C U When U Get There.” Co-star Kristen Wiig’s character was pissed at first, but when she finally got on board the big smile on Wiig’s face and the rest of the cast’s obvious delight saved what could have been a lame, throwaway bit. The Shins performed two new songs, including the single “Simple Song” and “It’s Only Life.”
