‘American Idol’ Ladies Do Whitney Houston Justice

Women of the Top 13 mostly overshadow the guys, who tackled Stevie Wonder’s songbook. By Adam Graham Whitney Houston was one of a handful of singers whose voice was so inimitable that “American Idol” judges would often discourage contestants from singing her songs. But the tables were turned Wednesday (March 7), when the ladies of the Top 13 were asked to sing songs from Houston’s catalog. Some were up to the task, including Jessica Sanchez, Skylar Laine and Erika Van Pelt, while others — Elise Testone and Shannon Magrane among them — proved why Whitney is often best left untouched. Guys, meanwhile, dug into the Stevie Wonder songbook, marking the first time Wonder’s songs have been used as a theme since the fifth season of “Idol.” But it was the girls who stole the show, and the season continues to look like it’s leaning in the ladies’ direction. “We might have a sing-off between two girls in the final!” Jennifer Lopez gushed after Hollie Cavanagh conquered Houston’s “All the Man That I Need.” Cavanagh’s performance was a highlight of the night, causing J.Lo to tell her, “You’re the one,” but it was Sanchez’s “I Will Always Love You” — the holy grail of Houston’s catalog — that stole the night and brought the three judges to their feet. “Jessica Sanchez is legit! Yo!” an enthused Randy Jackson beamed. “Best vocal of the night, one of the best singers in the whole competition!” Lopez said she was “speechless” following Sanchez’s big moment, and Steven Tyler — who said his two favorites of the night were “Jessica Sanchez and Jessica Sanchez” — told her, “You just made 40 million people cry.” (Apparently no one has told Tyler about the ratings slip this season, but that’s OK.) Laine’s country twist on “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” was another of the evening’s top moments, with Lopez calling her “amazing” and Tyler saying — as he often does — “that was beautiful.” Erika Van Pelt’s strong, vocally assured “I Believe in You and Me,” meanwhile, gave Lopez “goosies” and had Jackson praising her “unbelievable” tone. Magrane and Testone weren’t as lucky as the other girls. Magrane’s “I Have Nothing” hit a number of embarrassing miscues, especially during the big glory note at the song’s climax. The judges were mostly kind, blaming the mistakes on her nerves, but Tyler nailed it when he said she “crashed and burned in the turnaround.” Testone seemed thrown when her original choice of song, “The Greatest Love of All,” was switched at the behest of mentors Jimmy Iovine and Mary J. Blige to “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” a song Testone griped she wasn’t familiar with before being asked to sing. She was never able to find her pocket in the song, but she was equally undone by her sour attitude when dealing with her mentors and while talking with host Ryan Seacrest. On the guys’ side — yes, there are dudes in the competition this year too — Joshua Ledet turned in a soulful, blazing-hot version of Wonder’s “I Wish” that Jackson called “flawless” and had Lopez saying she felt through him. Colton Dixon offered up a stripped-down version of “Lately” that the judges were all behind, while Phillip Phillips’ “Superstition” was churned through the Phillip Phillips machine and came out sounding like, well, another Phillip Phillips creation. “We need you in this competition,” Jackson told him, complimenting his “alt-indie” sensibilities. Gentle giant Jermaine Jones’ “Knocks Me Off My Feet” fit him “like an Armani suit,” Tyler said, while Jackson said he needs to relax more in the context of his songs. DeAndre Brackensick’s “Master Blaster (Jammin’)” had Tyler referring to Brackensick as a “male Naima,” a reference to season 10 finalist Naima Adedapo, which was apparently meant as a compliment. Resident jokester Heejun Han had a memorable exchange with Iovine and Blige, giving the pair autographed pictures of himself (he gave Iovine a picture of himself frowning and Blige a picture of himself smiling, signing to Blige he liked her more than Iovine) but stood on his own vocally with a confident “All in Love Is Fair,” which was deemed “fantastic” by Tyler. Finally, Jeremy Rosado’s “Ribbon in the Sky” was the weakest of the male performances, with Jackson telling him he needed more “swag” to make the performance believable. Thursday’s episode will pit the male with the lowest number of votes against the female with the lowest votes, and the judges will decide who goes home. Tom Hardy’s Pudding, Chinese Food For Thought and Other Wisdom From the This Means War Team

It started with the pudding. Oh, not just any pudding: A perfect pool of melt-in-your-mouth chocolate-hazelnut goodness — a confection so rich, so irresistible, that even Tom Hardy found himself drawn like a moth to a flame to the dessert table before the press conference for This Means War the other week in Beverly Hills. He grabbed a saucer and ambled over to a pack of bewildered journalists, offering an ebullient bon mot about The Woman in Black . “I’d have eaten through Daniel Radcliffe to get that part!” he raved, or so the story goes, before setting down his dish and disappearing once more into the back hallways of the Four Seasons. I’d arrived two minute too late for the Hardy-Pudding Incident, but the room was still abuzz over the moment. So rarely does the talent walk among the press at these things that when they do — especially when as scruffy-faced and so very normal looking as Hardy was that day, clad not in couture but in a military-style This Means War jacket – it can be strangely jarring. Ditto when the film at hand is a Hollywood joint as slick and persona-driven as This Means War , the success of which will depend in great part on how many people out there want to see Reese Witherspoon wrestle with the tough choice of making out with the beautiful, manly Hardy or making out with the beautiful, manly Chris Pine . Decisions, decisions. Given the nature of This Means War as an early-year studio rom-com, it was a curious thing to see how personality played out in the flesh with director McG and stars Hardy, Witherspoon, and Chelsea Handler taking questions together. (Pine was absent thanks to Star Trek 2 filming commitments.) Witherspoon proved predictably amiable, gamely answering queries about online dating, marriage, and shooting her co-stars in the junk with a paintball gun – an old pro at offsetting the tedium of junket questions while coming off as perfectly likeable. McG, ever the showman, commanded the conference with his signature bombast — for better and for worse. According to him, This Means War was never intended to be a terribly complicated or easily categorized kind of film. “Let’s face it, this movie’s not about the human condition,” he admitted. “This movie’s about, ‘Hey, I can’t put it into a box.’ I think that’s one achievement of the picture is that you can go, ‘Hey, it is funny, there is some action, the girls are great, the guys are great.’ And it’s not just like this or just like that. And if we’re successful in doing that, we’re certainly done what we set out to do.” Uh, sure. Over in the corner, meanwhile, Hardy hunched over his mic and avoided giving the usual run of the mill sound bites. Does Hardy ever have conflicts with friends? “I don’t have any friends… I have a dog and a son. A dog couldn’t do anything to upset me, you know, and neither could my son.” What does he think of social media? “I think online dating is a way of procuring people, you know what I mean? Like Facebook, Myspace. It’s a way that people [use] to connect out. And procure small children and sometimes you know, dodgy relationships.” If we’re talking big personalities in This Means War and its junket that day at the Four Seasons, though, Handler took the cake. Playing Witherspoon’s married best friend and confidante, the talk show host/author/comedienne runs away with the film’s funniest lines; word has it McG battled the ratings board over Handler’s risqué ad libs just to get it down to a PG-13 rating, but more than a few gems made it through. Handler, of course, reveled in her reputation for controversy-making. The self-described “horrible influence on everyone” described the real life reversal of her off-screen friendship with Witherspoon. “It’s kind of the opposite. Because in real life, she has children, she’s a mother and she’s married. And I’m single, so it was kind of fun playing opposite roles. [Pause] I’m single and I sleep with a lot of men, so it’s perfect.” This Means War is pretty much exclusively composed of sexy fun and spy games, and its central actors are charismatic all, but something about it still nagged me. I asked McG to explain why his cast noticeably lacks diversity – all four leads (Pine, Hardy, Witherspoon, Handler) are Caucasian with blue eyes, while throwaway roles go to a few supporting actors, including Angela Bassett as a one-note police captain. He answered by pointing to his own 2000 film, Charlie’s Angels . “Listen, that’s a huge concern for me,” he replied. “And I can answer that in good faith because I put Lucy Liu in Charlie’s Angels . I don’t like lily-white movies with lily-white people bouncing around, but you’ve also just got to do what you got to do.” McG continued. “In the spirit of Benetton [Rainbow Complex], you know, the most empowered character in the film is indeed a black woman. I enjoy that the most powerful person in Hollywood is indeed a black woman – Oprah Winfrey. And I’m hoping to just transcend beyond that. I love ethnic diversity all over the place, but I just felt like Chelsea was the right one. I had a singular vision for Tom Hardy, I chased him all the way over to London. And you’re right, because I’m doing the color correction and I’m like, Jesus, everybody’s eyes are popping off the screen, these interior-lit blue mongrels. And it’s a bit of a concern, but you just got to do what’s right.” Without skipping a beat, Handler glanced in my direction and chimed in: “But we ate Chinese food throughout the whole filming.” “ We ate Chinese food throughout the whole filming. ” Immediately I wondered if she’d cracked the joke because of me — and if so, was I even offended by it? … Should I be? In the end I decided that I’d actually have more respect for Handler if she had intended to make a racial joke, in front of dozens of journalists, just to get a quip in; that’s the same kind of inappropriate quick-thinking that makes This Means War even remotely watchable, and the kind of boundary-smashing ballsiness that made me LOL at her E! talk show in the first place. If anything, I’m more offended by McG’s lazy excuse for making This Means War so “lily-white” while clinging to a progressive bit of casting he dared to pull off, once, over a decade ago. So it’s more than a “bit of a concern,” all right. And needless to say, Hollywood’s glaring issue of ethnic underrepresentation is not going to be solved here, with an explosion-filled rom-com like This Means War , and maybe-accidental, probably-on purpose jokes in poor taste blurted out in moments of impromptu press conference stand-up. It’s no secret that Matt Bomer is gay. The White Collar star has been with partner Simon Halls for years and the couple even has three sons together. But it was still noteworthy Saturday night when the actor took to the stage at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards to accept the New Generation Arts and Activism Award for his work in the fight against HIV/AIDS and publicly thanked acknowledged Halls for the first time, saying: “I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry. Selena Gomez and The Scene: It’s Over!

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are still going strong, as the couple were spotted out just last night on a date in Los Angeles. But the 19-year old singer has called it quits with the other steady presence in her life, telling Facebook followers over the weekend that she and backup band The Scene won’t be playing together for a bit. “My band and I are going our separate ways for a while,” Selena wrote. “This year is all about films and acting and I want my band to play music wherever with whoever. We will be back but, it will be a good while. I love them and I love you guys.” Gomez and The Scene released “When the Sun Goes Down” last year, an album that peaked at number-three on the Billboard 200 chart. But it’s true that Selena’s film career is taking off: she’ll voice a character in Adam Sandler’s animated Hotel Transylvania later this year; and then star alongside James Franco and Vanessa Hudgens in Spring Breakers , a movie about a group of college girls who take over a fast-food joint in order to finance their Florida spring break.

Oprah Begs Viewers to Ditch Grammys For OWN, Nielsen Far From Pleased

Oprah Winfrey took to Twitter last night to ask Nielsen viewers to watch her cable network OWN instead of the Grammy Awards, a pathetic move that drew criticism from her OWN followers and the market research company alike. “Every 1 who can please turn to OWN especially if u have a Nielsen box,” she tweeted Sunday at the start Oprah’s Next Chapter and the mega-rated Grammys. She later added, “Commercial Grammy people… u can turn to OWN.” The tweets caused a backlash on the social networking site, with some readers – fans of O, no less – accusing her of “begging for viewers” and being “desperate.” Oprah followed up with a flurry of defensive replies that were apparently in response to reader criticism: “The word ‘please’ is used as courtesy not a beg.” “‘Desperate’ not ever a part of my vocabulary” … “‘Unethical’ us a little harsh don’t u think? Seemed like it made sense to me. Sorry if you’re offended.” The original tweet has since been deleted. Networks are not allowed to specifically target Nielsen subscribers. Policy prohibits “attempts to single out panel members … to change their viewing habits.” “In accordance with our policies, Nielsen is reviewing this with our clients and may withhold, breakout and/or make a note in the ratings,” a Nielsen rep told EW . “We take any violation of our policy seriously.” Given that 39.9 million people watched the 2012 Grammys , a more effective punishment might be simply releasing OWN’s miniscule ratings instead. Oprah Winfrey has since released this statement: “I removed the tweet at the request of Nielsen. I intended no harm and apologize for the reference.”

Kelly Rowland Pushes for U.S. X Factor Gig

Simon Cowell may not have offered Beyonce $100 millon, but he made it clear in a recent interview that he’d love for the former Destiny’s Child singer to sit at the judging table on season two of The X Factor . We wonder if he’d settle for another ex-member of that group, however. Speaking to CNN this week, Kelly Rowland – who served as a panelist in Great Britain – made it clear she’d embrace the same role here on Fox. “It would be awesome to be a judge over here for The X Factor ,” the artist said . “I really enjoyed my time over in the U.K. being a judge. That was a great opportunity and a great experience, and I would love to do it again.” But is Rowland a big enough name to help Cowell boost the ratings of a series he swore would outdraw American Idol ? We doubt it. Stay tuned. [Photo: WENN.com]

‘American Idol’ Premiere Suffers 27 Percent Ratings Drop

Show’s debut saw biggest year-over-year ratings drop ever. By Gil Kaufman Ryan Seacrest and contestant Shaun Kraisman on Wednesday’s season premiere of “American Idol” Photo: Michael Becker / FOX How do you celebrate crushing the competition in the ratings but still facing one of the worst drop-offs in memory? That’s the conundrum ” American Idol ” brass faced on Thursday (January 19) morning when ratings for the season 11 debut of the #1 program in prime time showed a steep decline from last year’s bow even as “Idol” easily won the night. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wednesday night’s two-hour premiere represented the biggest year-over-year ratings drop for a season opener in the show’s decade-long history. Despite pulling in a formidable 21.6 million viewers, the season 11 bow was down 27 percent from last year in ratings and 18 percent in total viewership. Even before the season began, pundits had predicted that “Idol” would likely continue its slow ratings slide while remaining the highest-rated program in prime time. Ratings for the season premiere peaked in 2007 (when it drew a 15.8 rating in the crucial adult demo) and have been on the decline since then. Though there was a marginal bump in 2010 when Ellen DeGeneres joined the judging panel, Wednesday night’s show pulled in a 7.2 rating in the adult (18-49) demo. “Idol” has gotten the usual promotional push from Fox, but considering the full-court press employed to hype former judge Simon Cowell’s “X Factor” in the fall, the buzz surrounding the latest season of “Idol” appears tame by comparison. The show is also likely to get even more of a ratings challenge when rival “The Voice” debuts on NBC following next month’s Super Bowl. Wednesday night’s show went easy on the typical cavalcade of wacky, tone-deaf singers, focusing on more promising contestants such as Phillip Phillips and David Leathers Jr. Once again, though, producers also placed the spotlight on the judging panel, lavishing attention on Steven Tyler’s fangirls’ rapt looks of attention and stolen kisses (not to mention his fianc
