‘American Idol’ Ratings Down Again, But Show Still Tops The Night

Ratings down 12 percent from last year. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez on “American Idol” Photo: FOX There was a bit of good news/ bad news for “American Idol” on Friday morning (January 21). When the ratings came in for Thursday night’s second audition episode of season 10 , the numbers were once again down from last year, but on its new night, the show also notched the highest Thursday night ratings in more than 15 years for the Fox network. The Hollywood Reporter reported that the show averaged 22.9 million viewers and a 7.8 rating in the crucial 18-49 demographic, easily winning the night and more than doubling the numbers put up by the next-highest-rated show, NBC’s “The Office” (8.3 million viewers, 4.5 rating). The show was down 9 percent overall among total viewers and down 15 percent in the 18-49 demo compared to the first hour of Wednesday night’s season premiere . It also took a dive from last season’s second audition show, which rang up 26.4 million viewers and a 10 rating in the demo. The show moved back a night this year, switching from its Tuesday/Wednesday schedule, where it faced less competition, to Wednesday/Thursday this year. Overall, the first two shows are down 12 percent from last year’s opening episodes. Another good sign is that “Idol” beat CBS’ “Big Bang Theory,” one of the leading comedies on TV, which still put up strong numbers (13.6 million viewers/4.2 share). The other positive is that the move to Thursday gave Fox its highest-rated night of regular programming since 1995. While ratings have slid, so far audience and expert reaction to the new judging panel has been mostly positive and bodes well for greater tune-in once the show goes live in the first week of March. PETA Lambasts Hunting, Sarah Palin’s Alaska

In a clash of the media-hungry, supremely unintelligent titans, PETA has a bone to pick with Sarah Palin after the most recent episode of her TLC reality show. A graphic hunting scene, hilariously prefaced by a “Viewer Discretion Advised” warning aired Sunday on Sarah Palin’s Alaska . In it, the ex-gov shot a caribou. Never one to let an opportunity for publicity justice pass, PETA issued a statement condemning the show and the potential White House hopeful starring in it. Sarah doesn’t go hunting. That implies a chance of failure. Sarah goes KILLING . “ Sarah Palin seems to think that resorting to violence and blood and guts may lure people into watching her boring show,” said PETA V.P. Dan Mathews. “But the ratings remain as dead as the poor animals she shoots.” Ooh, that one hurts . Sort of inaccurate though, Dan. The show got 3.5 million viewers Sunday, up from 3 million the previous week. On TLC . It’s a hit. Sarah actually hasn’t commented (give it 30 minutes). But over the weekend on Facebook, she wrote that “unless you’ve never worn leather shoes, sat on a leather couch or eaten a piece of meat, save your condemnation of tonight’s episode.” Here’s the clip that has PETA so up in arms … Sarah Palin Shoots Caribou Team Sarah or Team PETA?

‘Simpsons’ invents new Fox News motto: ‘#1 with racists’

In the world of The Simpsons, Fox News' well-known “fair and balanced” motto has been replaced. On Sunday's episode of the long-running cartoon series, a Fox News helicopter carrying a network executive reads, “Fox News: Not Racists, But #1 With Racists.” After the Fox News executive steps out of the helicopter into the head of the Statue of Liberty, the aircraft goes into a tailspin and crashes. The pilot can be heard saying, “It's not fair, we're unbalanced.” The executive conducts a secret meeting where his team plans a new health care scare that will send their ratings through the roof. Gawker calls The Simpsons episode one of the most anti-Republican ever. At one point in the episode, the likeness of former Vice President Dick Cheney laments the lack of terrorist attacks on America. The creators of the popular television show may cause for concern. Just last week, a Fox News anchor effectively said that all Hispanics were illegal aliens. The anchor, Trace Gallagher, claimed that a new study has shown 100,000 illegal aliens have left Arizona since the passage of a draconian new law, SB 1070, that allows police to check the immigration status of anyone they pull over. “The way they got the numbers is they crunched them using the current US population survey and then they had numbers from the Mexican government, is what they came up with, is that 100,000 illegals have left Arizona — there are 100,000 illegals fewer before SB 1070 was ever talked about,” Gallagher said. Only that's not what the study says. The study actually says that the immigration law in Arizona has likely provoked the voluntary departure of 100,000 Hispanics from the southern US state. Bristol Palin Stays, Brandy Goes: ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Fans React

‘It’s not about talent, but a popularity contest,’ one MTV News commenter fumes. By Kara Warner Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy Photo: ABC With every season of “Dancing with the Stars,” there are early favorites and front-runners and at least one shocking elimination. On Tuesday night, viewers got their shocker of the season (or second shock, if you’re an Audrina Patridge fan) when consistent high-scorer Brandy was eliminated . “People vote and their voices count,” Brandy’s partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy said after the elimination was announced. “I don’t regret a second … of being on this season. It’s been an amazing journey.” “I don’t know how I feel right now,” Brandy said, crying. The reactions to Brandy’s departure have been coming in fast and furious since the announcement. Most commenters took issue with the fact that Brandy is gone and Bristol Palin remains in the competition. “Brandy is so talented and she worked so hard. I was shocked she was eliminated!” Sharon wrote. “I thought the competition was really between her and Jennifer Grey. Bristol [Palin] has improved but she should have been off the show weeks ago. That was painful to watch — very painful!” “It’s just a silly dance contest,” John wrote. “This is a network television [show’s] dream to make millions watch their shows!!! Create animosity and sparks and make people angry over the winner to get more people watching and calling. You know they’re making money from all those AT&T calls … plus the ratings are through the roof with this political angle they’ve cashed in on,” he said, referring to the outcry that supporters of former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin are keeping Bristol on the show. “Bristol is no star and has no talent and should not have been picked for the finals over Brandy,” commenter Marianne fumed. “Brandy did beautifully and got better each week. I can’t believe Bristol’s scores were more than Brandy’s. This show is a hoax! It’s not about talent, but a popularity contest. If Bristol wins, I’ll never watch this show again!” Other complaints brought up problems with the telephone voting system for Brandy’s phone line. They claimed they couldn’t get through until time ran out. Despite all the anti-Palin sentiments, a few folks came to her defense, however. “I can’t believe how mean you people are, always picking on Bristol,” Barbara wrote. “No, she is not the best dancer but she has progressed from a wall flower to being a confident young lady because of DWTS. She has become a ‘good’ dancer. It has taken a lot of courage to go on this show. At least 2 countries can vote and as many Democrats are eligible to vote as Republicans. How do you figure it’s just the state of Alaska and Republicans voting?? It also has to do with personality and improvement. Brandy is a great dancer but she is a whiner and Maks is arrogant! Jennifer is a beautiful dancer and she has improved greatly. Give Bristol a break!!!!” What do you think of the elimination? Will Palin get voted off next week? Share your thoughts in the comments! Gossip Girl and 90210 Hit Ratings Rough Patch

Quelle horreur! Cenk Uygur: The Next Leftist MSNBC Star?

Cenk Uygur (pronounced Jenk You-gurr) is profiled by media reporter James Rainey  in Wednesday’s Los Angeles Times, and it becomes quite clear the exotically-named Young Turks radio host could be the next leftist star at MSNBC. Since his friendship with Dylan Ratigan led to some guest-hosting gigs (in which he bested Ratigan in the ratings), Uygur is now part of the “family” of Bush-hating radicals: Cable executives hope fill-in hosts can at best hold on to the audiences they inherit. But MSNBC insiders said they believe Uygur did so well because many of those who watch his three-hour weekday Web program, (3 to 6 p.m. PDT) or clips on his YouTube channel jumped to MSNBC when Ratigan was out…. MSNBC President Phil Griffin called Uygur “part of our family” and expects him to get “more and more” air time, though he declined to specify in what time slots. Inside Cable News guesses it wouldn’t be any place in day time (might they dump the Hardball rerun at 7?) Or they could do an MSNBC version of  Red Eye in late night? In any case, Cenk wants to be seen on Obama’s left: “Obama spent the first two years of his administration practicing political unilateral disarmament,” he said in one salvo. “He laid down his arms to reach out to Republicans, and they ripped his arms off and clubbed him over the head with them.” Uygur has also offered these oddball utterances: Unlike Fox, MSNBC is “straight news.” He made this case with a straight face: “Is there a chance that Obama is actually more conservative than Reagan?” Days later, he added this Obama dismissal: “I didn’t realize we elected a Republican president.” As a Republican electoral wave approaches, the Tea Party is the “cancer of the Republican Party.” Most recently, he asked, “What black person, gay guy or girl, immigrant or Muslim-American in their right mind would vote for the Republican party? They might as well hang a sign around their neck saying I hate myself.” Eventually, MSNBC is going to be just wall-to-wall leftist wailers, many of them from failed talk-radio shows.
