ABC show’s leading ladies talk to MTV News about how the actor hilariously sends up his ‘Dawson’s Creek’ alter ego. By Jocelyn Vena Krysten Ritter Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — On Wednesday night (April 11), ABC welcomes the buzzy, dark comedy ” Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt 23 ” to their primetime schedule. MTV News hit the show’s red-carpet premiere on Tuesday and got the scoop from two of the show’s leading ladies: Dreama Walker, who plays sweet June, and Krysten Ritter, who plays bad girl Chloe. The actresses opened up about working with co-star James Van Der Beek, explaining what it’s like to watch him mock his nice-guy “Dawson’s Creek” image. They also joked about what it’s like to make a sex tape with him … for the show, of course. “[Van Der Beek plays a] self-centered, narcissistic version of himself,” Walker explained. “He’s so down-to-earth and very sweet and has a great sense of humor; very smart, well-spoken, just a cool dude, too polite,” she added of the real-life Van Der Beek. “Apt 23” follows two women, con artist Chloe and girl-next-door June, who become roommates after June finds herself suffering several misfortunes in the Big Apple. The rooomies’ relationship takes some hilarious turns as (the somewhat psychotic) Chloe makes every attempt to break June’s optimistic spirit. Of course, it also stars TV’s Dawson Leery, now all grown-up and playing an exaggerated version of himself
Collaborating with Rihanna would be ‘incredible,’ guys tell MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: NBC Universal In addition to girls all across America, the fivesome of One Direction are also winning the hearts of some of Hollywood’s most A-list starlets and singers, who have been tweeting and talking about — and dancing to — the boy band now that they are keeping everyone Up All Night with their sunny pop tunes. At the Kids’ Choice Awards in March, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were all spotted in the audience boogying to the band’s single “What Makes You Beautiful.” And, Demi Lovato recently opened up about crushing on Niall Horan, saying , “He’s so adorable!” and later tweeting , “And I totally just downloaded some One Direction songs … #guilty.” When MTV News caught up with the fellas, they opened up about all the famous-female attention they’ve been receiving lately. “How cool was that?” Louis Tomlinson said of the KCA love. “[It’s] really exciting, I suppose,” Liam Payne added. “And even following Katy Perry on the stage as well was a big thing for us. It’s just amazing to be in the same room as these sort of people, for us to just come over from England and just be involved.” With so much love from celebrity fans, the guys are also feeling love for the ladies and appreciate the support they’ve been sending their way. Harry Styles explained, “I feel good. I think the people who were getting involved are all great performers, so for them to enjoy our performance was nice. … Katy Perry was there, Selena Gomez. There was Ashley Tisdale. Taylor Swift was dancing as well.” As for which of those ladies would top their list of possible future collaborations, they said working with Perry or Rihanna would be “cool” and “incredible.” While they didn’t mention working with Gomez in the future, One Direction had been rumored to be working with her beau, Justin Bieber , but they’ve since shot down talk that a duet is in the works. “We actually went down to the studio to listen to some of Justin Bieber’s tracks,” Payne explained. “He invited us down, and we had a good listen, but there’s no real collaboration or anything.” Who would you like to see One Direction collaborate with? Bieber will let his fans pick which photo he uses for the song, out March 26. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Valery Hache/ AFP/ Getty Images Ever dreamed of being Justin Bieber ‘s art director? Well, the singer is giving his fans that opportunity. Bieber has released two photos and requested that fans choose which will be the official art for his next single, “Boyfriend.” The photo that receives the most fan tweets wins. Biebs dons a gray checkered top over a gray T-shirt in both photos, but it’s the pose that really differentiates the two shots. In one, he stands looking away from the camera, his hands at his side. In the other, he’s looking to the camera, his hand running through his famous hair. The Mike Posner-produced track will drop on March 26. It’s the first single off his forthcoming album, Believe , out later this year. Bieber hit the studio with a number of A-listers for the album, including Maroon 5’s Adam Levine and super-producers Diplo and Ryan Tedder, plus will.i.am, Drake and Lil Wayne. “You can’t really expect anything from my album. It’s really, really different,” Bieber told MTV News. “And it’s new; it’s not the same thing everyone’s used to hearing right now on the radio. It’s really exciting for me, ’cause I’m able to break out of my shell and show my fans what I’m all about and show other people who might not like my music that maybe they can like my music. “I’m not trying to lose any of my young fans,” he continued. “I’m not trying to lose any of my fans, I’m just trying to gain fans, and I think that’s the best way to do it. Rather than try to grow up and lose your fans, you can get better and evolve and gain respect from more people.” Which Bieber photo do you think he should use as the cover art for “Boyfriend”? One radio host gets an early listen to the Believe track, out March 26, and compares it to Justin Timberlake’s work. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage It’s still two weeks until Justin Bieber drops his single “Boyfriend,” but there’s already a lot of buzz about it online. Radio host Mick Lee at Z104.3 in Baltimore got to hear the track and has great stuff to say about it. “All I’m saying … is wow … so much different than his previous music,” he wrote on the station’s website. “Produced by Mike Posner … the best way to describe it is a mix of Justin Timberlake ‘Sexy Back’ … N Sync ‘Girlfriend’ — AND get this … he raps … best comparison is it sounds like ‘Wait’ by the Ying Yang Twins …” Bieber’s vocal producer Kuk Harrell recently spoke about the track, which is set for release on March 26, to Hollywoodlife.com , describing it as “hot.” “Now that Justin is 18, he knows what his brand is,” he said. “He knows what kind of songs are right for him. That’s how you know you are genuine artist. Justin is a genuine artist!” Harrell added that he thinks this album could help him win a Grammy, noting, “Justin is a very creative person. He has tons of ideas. When we are working together, I allow him to flush out all of those ideas. He will be an amazing producer one day.” “Boyfriend” is the lead single off Bieber’s next album, Believe , due later this year. “You can’t really expect anything from my album. ‘It would be inaccurate to portray this show as anything other than completely dangerous,’ Robert Kirkman tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler Jeffrey DeMunn in “The Walking Dead” Photo: AMC Warning: Major spoilers for the latest episode of “The Walking Dead” lurk ahead! Death is par for the course on “The Walking Dead,” but that knowledge wasn’t enough to prepare for the shocking death of fan-favorite character Dale. Veteran actor Jeffrey DeMunn made his final appearance on the AMC survival horror series on Sunday night, and as is custom for the show, his exit was a gruesome one: While strolling along the quiet fields of Hershel’s farm, Dale was mortally injured by a roaming zombie and, ultimately, euthanized by a bullet to the head from antihero Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus). “Dale’s death comes at a time where he’s very much needed,” executive producer Robert Kirkman told MTV News about the shocking decision to kill DeMunn’s character. “[Rick and the gang] are trying to make this decision on what to do with Randall. The farm is becoming increasingly dangerous. There is still tension between Rick and Shane, despite the fact that it appears that they’ve put much of their differences behind them for now. They need that moral compass [in Dale], and it’s been taken away.” Losing Dale will have massive repercussions on the rest of the “Walking Dead” cast, Kirkman promised. Chief among those feeling the sting will be Carl (Chandler Riggs), who was partially responsible for Dale’s death. Earlier in the episode, Carl wandered into the forest by himself and taunted a seemingly immobile zombie — the very same zombie that ripped Dale’s guts out. “It’s interesting to see Carl doing kid stuff: going out on his own, trying to prove he’s strong enough to kill a zombie, proving that he’s deserving of carrying a gun,” Kirkman said. “He instigated this whole situation. We’re going to deal with his emotions and what comes from him causing Dale’s death to a certain extent. That’s definitely one of the big repercussions where Dale’s death affects these characters.” Once again, Dale’s death proves that the “Walking Dead” TV series is more than willing to deviate from the “Walking Dead” comic books. In Kirkman’s comics, Dale survives dozens and dozens of issues before finally succumbing to a fatal zombie bite. Seeing the popular character leave the show so soon is bound to be a shock for longtime fans then — but that wasn’t the only kind of shock value Kirkman and company were aiming for. “One of the things we wanted to do is show how dangerous these zombies actually are,” Kirkman said. “We were sitting around the writers’ room early on in the planning of season two, and we thought, you know, there aren’t a lot of zombies actually succeeding in what they’re trying to do. They eat people here and there, but we’ve never really had a zombie actually take down one of our main characters — at least not for a while, not since the first season. We wanted to remind people how dangerous these creatures are. It also threw a wrench in everyone’s plans to take Dale off the table, so those two ideas merged into one until we eventually came to offing this character.” Fans aren’t just losing Dale, of course: they’re also losing DeMunn, one of the finest actors “The Walking Dead” has to offer. Taking an actor of such high caliber off the playing field is not something the “Dead” team treated lightly, Kirkman said. “It’s a tremendous loss,” he admitted. “It’s difficult. It’s difficult for the cast, because they’ve become pretty much a family hanging out in rural Georgia. They keep each other company. It’s definitely a big deal [losing Jeffrey]; it sucks for everybody. Jeffrey in particular brought a serious sense of gravitas to the role and definitely legitimized this show by gracing us with his presence. We were lucky to get an actor of his caliber. He added a lot to the show, and his presence is definitely going to be missed. “But,” Kirkman added, “this is ‘The Walking Dead.’ It would be inaccurate to portray this show as anything other than completely dangerous, and in order to do that, you have to lose characters from time to time.” Were you shocked by Dale’s death? ‘It’s really exciting for me, ’cause I’m able to break out of my shell,’ Bieber tells MTV News about his next album. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Justin Bieber Photo: WireImage With Justin Bieber expected to drop Believe later this year, he’s also hoping to expand his fanbase. Of course his first priority is to make his fans happy, but he’d also like to prove to any haters out there that he’s more than just a tween dream; he’s a certifiable pop star who can make music that appeals to all demographics. “You can’t really expect anything from my album. It’s really, really different,” he told MTV News. Rather than try to grow up and lose your fans, you can get better and evolve and gain respect from more people.” Bieber is slated to drop the album’s first single, “Boyfriend,” on March 26, and he said it will certainly please his most devoted fans. “This new album is crazy. I’ve spent the most time on it creatively, just writing myself and being involved in the whole process. It’s something that comes from my heart,” he explained of the 2012 release. “I hope all my fans and all my Beliebers like it. With my new album, Believe, there’s so many different songs and so many different styles. It’s really versatile and fun. My first single is going to be amazing — everyone’s going to love it.” And while it’s still a ways off, Bieber confirmed he will take the album on the road. “I don’t know if it’ll be called the Believe Tour,” he said. “I don’t know yet, I really have no clue. But there will be a tour for my album, Believe. 100 percent. And I will be on the road, hanging out.” What are you expecting from Bieber’s next project? Let us know in the comments! Swift, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum and Brad Paisley are honored at the show, which premieres tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: CMT Taylor Swift turned 22 on Tuesday (December 13), and what better way to celebrate another banner year than with CMT’s Artists of the Year special? CMT caught up with Swift on the red carpet of the event, and she opened up about being honored alongside fellow Nashville pals Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum and Brad Paisley. “What I love about this event is it feels very low-key and fun and you can bring your friends, you sit at a table. It’s very unlike any other award show,” she said late last month at the taping in Music City. “Because you’re not sitting there wondering who’s going to win. There’s no anxiety, because you know who’s being honored, and it’s all about hearing the way the music is presented by other artists. It’s really exciting.” The All-American Rejects were picked to perform one of Taylor’s tracks at the show, which airs on CMT at 9 p.m. ET tonight. For their homage to the country superstar, they decided to take one of her particularly country-tinged Speak Now singles and do it up AAR style. “It’s special. We have a special performance for Miss Taylor Swift,” lead singer Tyson Ritter said. “We’re performing her song ‘Mean.’ We definitely sort of took a country song and made it not anything like what it was. It’s going to be a tribute to the fact that any song can stand in any genre, and we definitely brought it into ours. We’re like the Osmonds, except we’re the side that’s a little more rock and roll.” Ritter went on to gush about Swift and her work ethic. “She’s the real deal,” he explained. “She doesn’t take sh– from anybody while she does it. And strong women, that’s something to be feared and adored, right?” Having the All-American Rejects put their stamp on a track is the opposite of what Swift did on her Speak Now Tour . Stop after stop, she reimagined songs from artists like T.I. , Flo Rida and Usher, with the artists themselves right by her side. “I would sum up this past year as being a spontaneous, exciting, wonderful year of collaborations with artists I never expected would come up on my stage and perform for my fans,” she explained. “I see flashbacks of stadium shows and Usher coming out on stage and James Taylor coming out onstage and all these different artists coming out and playing with me, which was an amazing time for me.” Don’t miss CMT’s Artists of the Year , premiering tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT. ‘I’m always continuing to grow and learn more about myself each and every day, so I can definitely relate to that,’ actor tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment Eventually, all werewolves have to grow up. Jacob learns that lesson during the finale of the “Twilight” series, “Breaking Dawn,” and as it turns out, the man behind Jacob, Taylor Lautner , has been learning the same lesson each and every day. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz sat down with Lautner while he was promoting the penultimate “Twilight” release, set to hit theaters Friday. Lautner said the Jacob we see in “Breaking Dawn” is a whole other type of animal. “It was really exciting for me, because Jacob in this movie is very different than he ever has been, so I was a little nervous. I was excited,” he said. For Lautner, “Breaking Dawn” was a chance for each of the film’s characters to show a different side, but he admitted that he struggled particularly with Jacob. “It’s really amazing to see all of the characters, really, in a different light than you’ve ever seen them before,” Lautner said. “But Jacob was a challenge in this movie, being pulled in two totally different directions and kind of being the middle man. He has to make a decision: which side are you going to choose?” In “Breaking Dawn,” Jacob must decide between his loyalties to Bella and her unborn vampire child and his wolf pack, a very adult decision for a teenage werewolf to make. Lautner himself still has his moments of immaturity but said it’s all part of the bigger picture. “I have my kid-fun moments, I guess, but I would say it’s a good mixture. I don’t think you’ve ever found exactly who you are,” he said. “I’m always continuing to grow and learn more about myself each and every day, so I can definitely relate to that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘It’s bad that it takes pain to unite people, but [it’s good] to see people from all walks of life come together,’ rapper tells MTV News. By Steven Roberts David Banner at Occupy Wall Street Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — By now, you’ve heard about Occupy Wall Street , the demonstration that began September 17 in Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park. The demonstration has been both lauded and laughed at, and it has continued to grow and spread to several cities across the globe. The movement has made waves throughout the media and caught the attention of several politicians, celebrities and CEOs, including David Banner. MTV News followed the Mississippi rapper down to the park — now dubbed “Liberty Park” — last week. He said he was proud to see Americans standing up for themselves, because he’s always worked for the upward mobility of people. He also drew a parallel between America’s current economic struggles and the fallen music industry. “You watched in the same way that the middle class is being evaporated; you don’t have those 250,000 to 650,000 artists anymore,” Banner said. “You[‘re] either selling 15,000 records, 20,000 records or you selling a million records. So the middle class in entertainment is going the same way the middle class in America is going.” David Banner isn’t alone: Tom Morello , Kanye West and Talib Kweli have also joined the Occupy Wall Street protesters throughout their monthlong demonstration. One of Banner’s main goals was to present the side of the people. He said he’s noticed some Republican leaders speaking disrespectfully about the protesters, as well as about the general public. “I hear comments like, they need to work hard or they need to take baths. Like, dude, why would you even say that about your people? Regardless of whether we agree with each other or not, we’re all American,” Banner said. “This is even our opportunity to show the side of the people, to allow people to really talk, especially the young people.” Another of Banner’s goals was making sure people’s goals were expressed. He worried that the power of the movement could be watered down because it’s faceless. There are consequences to having leaders and goals, but at least everyone would know exactly what they were out there for. When Banner talked to a few of the demonstrators, he didn’t find one common thread, but he said he was motivated by their willingness to take a stand. “It’s bad that it takes pain to unite people, but [it’s good] to see people from all walks of life, all colors, all creeds come together to try to make something happen.” Share your thoughts on the ongoing Wall Street protests in the comments below.
