Skrillex Nabs Best Remixed Recording Grammy

‘It’s more of really a platform than a genre,’ the EDM star tells MTV News on our live-stream carpet about the dance movement. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Montgomery Skrillex arrives at the Grammy Awards on Sunday Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Skrillex will walk into the Grammy Awards a winner. On Sunday (February 12), the multiple nominee nabbed the Grammy gold for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical for the song “Cinema” in a pre-telecast ceremony. It marks a big achievement for the rising EDM DJ/producer — and an even bigger achievement for the genre, which has shot through to the mainstream in the last year. Before he took home the prize, Skrill chatted with MTV News on our live-stream red carpet, opening up about his current status as EDM’s “It” boy. “You know what? I don’t really think about that too much because I’m with these guys and I’m doing shows and you don’t have much time to reflect when stuff [is] happening so quickly. And at the same time, it’s more, I’m really focused on my label and my music and touring and making great production,” he explained. “We all live in the moment. “I think EDM, like what you were saying before, what I was just thinking about, it’s more of really a platform than a genre because it pulls and inspires and it resonates through all types of genres and all types of energy,” he told MTV News’ James Montgomery. Skrillex is up for four more awards on Sunday, including Best New Artist. In addition to recognizing EDM throughout multiple categories, the show will also include a tribute to the musical movement . “As DJs we’ve been pushing new and interesting music for a long time and now people are paying attention. It’s a sound and an energy,” said A-Trak, Skrillex’s fellow producer and a Grammy nominee. “It is unusual,” Diplo added on the red carpet, in a discussion of the current spotlight put on EDM. “I mean, I think we’ve all been a part of the music scene for a while. But it’s kind of cool were geeing the recognition.” MTV News’ Sway and James Montgomery will be live from the Grammys red carpet tonight starting at 5 p.m. ET to get reactions from music’s biggest stars on the death of Whitney Houston. Michelle Williams ‘So Grateful’ For Oscar Nod

‘This role has been the challenge and privilege of a lifetime,’ the ‘My Week With Marilyn’ star says in a statement. By Jocelyn Vena Michelle Williams in “My Week With Marilyn” Photo: The Weinstein Company Michelle Williams is getting Oscar love yet again. Williams is nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards for “My Week With Marilyn,” facing off against screen legends and some fresh blood. “I am so grateful to be acknowledged by the Academy for my work, which was made possible by the support of our director Simon Curtis and the camaraderie of a terrific ensemble of actors — a special congratulations to [co-star] Kenneth Branagh — and the fearless Harvey Weinstein,” she said in a statement. “This role has been the challenge and privilege of a lifetime. I would like to think that the recognition our film has received by the Academy is a testament to Marilyn’s legacy.” The other nominees in her category are Glenn Close (“Albert Nobbs”), Viola Davis (“The Help”), Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) and Meryl Streep (“The Iron Lady”). Branagh, who earned a Best Supporting Actor nod for his work in “Marilyn,” was equally amped about the recognition. “It was a rare honour to play Sir Laurence Olivier,” he said in a statement. “To be recognised by the Academy for doing so is overwhelming. I’m absolutely thrilled.” Williams already won the Golden Globe for her role in the film earlier this month. This marks her third Oscar nod after previous nominations for “Blue Valentine” and “Brokeback Mountain,” though she has yet to take one home. Recently, former “Dawson’s Creek” co-star Joshua Jackson opened up about Williams’ critically lauded career . “It’s surreal, in that it would be surreal to see any of your friends [up for an Oscar]. It’s amazing. She’s an excellent actress,” he told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival . “Of all of us, when we finished that show, she was the one who had the clearest idea about what it was that she wanted to do. To be able to go out and achieve that is no small feat. I just think it’s wonderful.” See the complete list of Academy Awards Nominations . Eminem Producer Alex Da Kid Is ‘Confident’ In His Grammy Chances

Two of his songs — Em’s ‘Love the Way You Lie’ and B.o.B’s ‘Airplanes’ — are facing off for Record of the Year. By Steven Roberts Alex Da Kid Photo: Gabriel Bouys/AFP/Getty Images Producer Alex Da Kid has had quite the year, collaborating with Eminem and Rihanna on the chart-topping “Love the Way You Lie” as well as B.o.B and Hayley Williams on the equally anthemic “Airplanes.” Now that the 2011 Grammy nominations have been announced, Alex has racked up a few nods, and his two biggest hits will even duke it out for Record of the Year. MTV News caught up with Alex via phone Thursday (December 2), and he said he was extremely excited about the recognition but wasn’t surprised: He knew these songs would put him on the map from day one. “I remember sitting in the studio with Em and being like, ‘I’m writing my Grammy speech right now,’ ” Alex recalled. “He hates all that stuff, and he hates it when I say stuff like that, but I really believed in it from the start.” Alex’s first major song was B.o.B’s “Airplanes,” which he said paved the way for his second Grammy-nominated song, “Love the Way You Lie.” Eminem — who received 10 nominations himself — is featured on “Airplanes Pt. II,” and Alex said their relationship grew from there. The rookie producer faces stiff competition in the Record of the Year category — where he faces off against Cee Lo’s “F— You,” Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” and Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” — but Alex remains confident about his chances. “I mean, I think they’re pretty good,” he told MTV News of his pair of tracks. “I’m a confident person, and they’re my favorite songs out of the category we’re in, but you never know.” Do you think Alex has a good shot come Grammy night? B.o.B Promises ‘Spectacular’ VMA Performance With Hayley Williams

‘I’m gonna attempt to levitate,’ the ‘Airplanes’ MC jokes about first-ever set with Paramore collaborator on Sunday. By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B Photo: MTV News The clock is counting down to Sunday’s VMAs, and for Video of the Year nominees B.o.B and Hayley Williams it means finally meeting for the first time. The two collaborated on the rapper’s top-five hit “Airplanes” but have never met — they recorded the song and shot their parts for the video separately. They’re set to meet Saturday afternoon (September 11) in Los Angeles when they rehearse for their performance at the 2010 Video Music Awards. “I think just the fact that me and her are performing on the stage at the same [event] is gonna be spectacular,” B.o.B told MTV News on Friday about anticipation for his appearance with the Paramore singer. B.o.B is also set to perform with Bruno Mars, bringing their #1 collaboration “Nothin’ on You” to the Nokia Theatre. And the combination performance, comprised of the two smash collabos, is among the most-anticipated. The Atlanta lyricist is excited about his prime-time performance and said he was thinking about a new wrinkle for his set. “I’m gonna attempt to levitate,” he joked. “I don’t know if the dynamics of the room will allow me to do that, ’cause it requires me to really pull from the sky.” B.o.B is one of the most-nominated artists at the VMAs, scoring nods for Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video, among others. He actually found out about the recognition via Twitter. “I was just on Twitter checking to see what’s up, and then I saw I got nominated, and I was like, ‘All right, don’t mind if I do.’ ” he shared with us last month. The potential big haul left the melodic MC feeling special. “It’s very special to me,” B.o.B said. “I think it’s a lot more special than the success of the singles, because this reflects the work I’ve put in over the years and the word of mouth I’ve helped create. It’s definitely amazing. I’m trying to find the words to explain it, but I can’t. It’s inexplicable. I’m a real simple man, so, you know, I accept every gift with generosity and gratitude.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Emmy Nominations Spur ‘Glee’ Cast Text-Message Chain

‘Mad Men’ star Jon Hamm says he, too, ‘woke up to 18 texts’ congratulating him. By Kelley L. Carter Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch Photo: Angela Weiss/ Getty Images The sweet, gleeful sound of a text-message alert woke Jane Lynch up Thursday morning (July 8). “I was aroused from a deep sleep!” the actress told People magazine about her 5 a.m. text. “It’s always a surprise and it’s always exciting.” Lynch was being informed that she was nominated for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her work on “Glee” and also for a guest spot on CBS’ “Two and a Half Men.” Likewise, co-star Matthew Morrison was nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy and told the magazine that he prepped himself for the early morning Emmy announcements by running 7 miles. “You try to not put too much importance on something like this, and I want to say it doesn’t matter to me, but I can’t seem to wipe this smile off my face right now,” he said. “Glee” racked up 19 nominations, which Morrison said set off a text-message chain. “I talked to [creator] Ryan [Murphy and] I’m so happy for [fellow nominee] Chris Colfer . I texted Jane and I texted Lea [Michele], and I texted the hair and makeup department! We have all been in the loop,” he said. Colfer, 20, plays newly out-of-the-closet high school student Kurt Hummel. “I knew there was the possibility, but I don’t think I could have expected this,” he said, adding that he phoned just about everyone, including “the lunch ladies from my high school and pretty much anyone!” Colfer also told USA Today that the recognition was extra special because many of his fans have shared with him the significance of his character. “I know how important the character is to so many people, especially kids who have been told it’s not OK to be who they are,” he said. “The thing I’m most excited about is those kids get to see Kurt get nominated.” The “Glee” actors weren’t the only ones sending around text messages. “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm told USA Today that he “woke up to 18 texts. That’s sort of a new development,” said the actor, who also was nominated for his guest stint on NBC’s “30 Rock.” The 62nd annual awards show will air Sunday, August 20. Sandra Bullock and Jesse James: Inside the Divorce

Sandra Bullock and Jesse James’ divorce was finalized this week. That doesn’t mean their relationship is completely over, however, according to sources. The exes will continue to be involved in each other’s lives, People reports . Jesse and Sandra, who wed in 2005, will work together as co-parents of James’ kids Sunny, 6, Jesse Jr., 12, and Chandler, 15, from his two previous marriages. The divorce’s completion also clears the way for Bullock to finalize her adoption of son Louis , 6 months, and for her recognition as the boy’s sole legal guardian. “It’s not like they’re talking every day, but they’re in touch about things,” a source close to both says. “It seems like it’s about the kids more than anything.” For her part, Bullock, 45, has been “chilling out” in New Orleans and Austin, Tx., with Louis. James, 41, has made it clear he plans on moving to Texas as well. He may not think he can win her back romantically, but “He has a goal,” says a James pal. “He wants his life back, a sense of normalcy and his family back.” Their divorce really was amicable, too. Sandra may have had issues with Jesse after the Michelle McGee cheating scandal, but she trusted him and vice versa when it came to deciding who got what. Jesse and Sandra trusted each other when it came to listing the value of the assets they each held and the debts they each owed, unusual in a high-profile split. They waived their right to independently investigate the true value of the items, entered into a confidential property settlement agreement and waived alimony.
