‘Unfortunately, she’s the closest to breaking my record for the last 10 years,’ singer says of Adele catching up with his chart record. He really loves Adele , even if she’s threatening his position as an album sales record holder. “If I have to confess, I have to confess that I have told a few people not to go and buy Adele’s album because I don’t want her to go and break my record,” he joked to Capital FM in the U.K. The 21 singer’s record-setting album has come close to beating the record held by his own album Confessions for most albums sold in one year . “No, actually, I love her. Unfortunately, she’s the closest to breaking my record for the last 10 years. So now, guys, don’t go and buy that album right now.” But if he can’t beat her, he’ll join her. He hinted in the same interview that he would love the chance to collaborate with the broken-hearted songstress. “I think the world deserves an Usher and Adele record ,” he said. “That’s what I think.” Well, Usher will get his chance to prove his chart dominance once again when he drops his new album later this year. He’s currently out promoting its lead single, the sexy, sultry, Diplo-produced “Climax.” The singer released a video for the track earlier this month. The sexy clip follows two lovers engaged in a hot, steamy love affair. Usher wrestles with the ramifications of their relationship, pondering it all in his car, with a gun not far away. Leading to the video’s climax, Usher watches his lady with her other man, then runs in the house, fires off his gun and runs away. Viewers are left wondering if it was nothing more than a daydream as the video ends with the singer once again sitting in his car, still reflecting, as he pulls away from the supposed crime scene. The Jonas Brothers promised they’d be hitting the studio very soon, and it seems they are men of their word. This week big bro Kevin tweeted out some footage of Joe and Nick in the studio whipping up some musical ear candy that will surely delight their fans. While there’s no certainty that the teased track will make their next studio release, the song certainly does blend the guys’ love for mixing genres, touching on soul, rock and disco. When Nick dropped by the MTV News offices recently, he said that when this next album drops, all bets are off as to what it will sound like. “We have spoken about it, and the thing we’re doing which is different to any record we’ve made in the past is we’re saying, ‘Anything goes, let’s just vibe out, listen to a million songs, write a million songs and see what we’re feeling most.’ Our statement, as a band, for this record has to be really strong. We feel like we want to deliver the best record we can.” Individually, the guys have been busy churning out albums, but there hasn’t been a proper JB album since 2009, when they dropped Lines, Vines and Trying Times. The guys are well aware that the music scene is vastly different three years later. “We pay attention to it, definitely,” Nick said. “That’s part of your job as an artist, too, is to be aware of what other people are doing. … We pay attention and have been paying attention just to see where we want to fall. But first we just want to write great songs, and as far as how it sounds, that’ll come second.” There has yet to be a release date for the album, but the Jonas Brothers have teased that it may drop before the end of the year. The hashtag #JonasBrothers2012 attached to the studio video may be the best hint so far. “We don’t know how long it’s going to take us to write this record,” Nick warned. “It may take a couple weeks, it may take months, it could take years, but we’re ready to go on that journey. It’s been a while and there has been a lot of growth as individuals and musically as well. We’ve all gone on our journeys musically. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Ever since its premiere at the 54th Grammy Awards , folks have speculated long and hard about Katy Perry’s “Part Of Me,” and whether its various lyrical barbs — “You can keep the diamond ring, it don’t mean nothing anyway/ In fact, you can keep everything — except for me,” in particular — were aimed at her ex-husband, Russell Brand. It would seem to make sense … after all, Perry’s no stranger to the occasional(ly brutal) kiss-off (check the Teenage Dream track “Circle The Drain” for proof), but there’s just one tiny problem: “Part Of Me” first surfaced in 2010 , two months after Perry and Brand got married in India. And while Katy has yet to speak publically about the pair’s split , she was definitely looking to set the record straight about her latest chart-topping hit … which most certainly isn’t about Brand, no matter what you might think. “I wrote it two years ago, which is funny because everybody is like ‘God, it sounds so current,’ ” she told MTV News recently in Los Angeles. “And some people that I work with were like ‘You should just say you wrote it a couple of weeks ago.’ I’m like ‘I’m not a d—, I’m going to tell the truth.’ I wrote it two years ago when I was writing and recording Teenage Dream, [but] it didn’t feel right on the record. I would’ve had to take out one of my other songs that [made the album] a nice, complete package.” And despite her denials, Perry realizes that some folks will just keep on assuming “Part Of Me” is a direct swipe at Brand … and she really can’t blame them: After all, even she’ll admit that there’s a whole lot about the song that seems practically preordained. “I always planned to put it out in the spring of this year, to possibly perform it at a big [awards show], but sometimes I’m like ‘Am I living in ‘The Truman Show?’ … what’s going on?’ ” she laughed. “Because I sit down and I write all these songs at once, all these emotions and feelings and thoughts, and then, like, it just feels like sometimes I’m caught in this movie where my life is paralleling my music! It seems very serendipitous, but, as un-fun as it sounds, I prepare everything. I’m overly prepared and kind of a control freak in the best of ways.
