Mary J. Blige Gives Command Performance At Essence Music Festival

Singer whips crowd into frenzy with classics like ‘Real Love,’ ‘I’m Going Down,’ as Alicia Keys stumbles during near-flawless show. By Shaheem Reid Mary J. Blige performs at the 2010 Essence Music Festival Photo: Taylor Hill/ FilmMagic The 16th annual Essence Music Festival ended in triumph in the early hours of Monday morning, as Earth Wind & Fire closed out the weekend with hits like “September” and “Reasons.” For several days, Essence magazine — celebrating its 40th anniversary this year — and its 20-plus sponsors, including Coca-Cola, Olay and Ford, drove home messages of empowerment, self-esteem and self-awareness. By day, thousands hit New Orleans’ Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, where dozens of companies had set up booths and where acts like Keith Sweat and El DeBarge performed. Those passing through the convention center were also treated to good old celebrity sightings like T.I. and comedian/author Steve Harvey, who led relationship talks. At night, of course, it was all about the music at the Louisiana Superdome. Trey Songz, Estelle, Kid ‘N Play, Doug E. Fresh, LL Cool J, Jill Scott, Joe, Gladys Knight and Keri Hilson were among dozens of performers who opened both on the main stage and the smaller lounge stages. And the headliners were big guns: Janet Jackson kicked things off Friday, Saturday belonged to Alicia Keys and on Sunday night, though Earth Wind & Fire were last on the lineup, it was all about Mary. Mary J. Blige walked away with the performance of the weekend, showing a definitive command of the audience. The queen of hip-hop soul had the New Orleans crowd in a frenzy like a Reggie Bush touchdown, opening up her catalog and doling out cherished ditties such as “Real Love.” When Blige brought out Trey Songz to sing on “We Got Hood Love,” Trigger, of course, got another resounding ovation from the ladies. “Thank you for helping your big sister out,” Mary told Trey. “Sweet Thang” was huge, likely going over heavy because of its sing-along factor, and the audience was so enthralled on “I’m Going Down,” Mary only had to sing one line to tear the roof off the Dome. “Time on my hands, since you been away boy,” the female fans roared, taking over the reins of the record. “Sleep doesn’t come easy,” Mary soon joined in, but the hypnotized spectators kept singing the lyrics. After the record, Blige struck a b-girl pose with her fist balled almost all the way up and her thumb touching her chin. “Let me say this, the Mary J. Blige fans are in the building. I’m having a great time,” Mary said before complimenting the ladies on how good they were looking and how great they sounded. “We’ve reached that point in the night when we have to address some things,” she continued. The Queen then advised the women that some people will try to push them down, and that there’s only one way to handle those people: Tell them you’re trying to get up. “We will have no more drama,” she insisted, following up with “No More Drama.” “I may not be perfect for you, but I’m perfect for me,” Mary told the ladies. She also said she was cool with her imperfections. “It can only make me better to know I am imperfect. … It’s only one you baby. It’s only one you, original, baby.” The tempo soon changed up: “I wanna keep y’all hype right now. Keep y’all right,” she said. T.I. then came onstage for “Good Love” and the fans went crazy. Mary hugged Tip and he saluted the crowd. Blige’s set ended with her smashes “Family Affair” and “Be Without You.” The night before, the highlight on the bill was Alicia Keys, who was introduced by Jada Pinkett Smith. The five-months pregnant singer, who appeared to be standing on six-inch heels, slipped and fell onstage during “Love Is Blind,” but she never missed a beat (her vocals were nearly flawless) or a lyric. She got right back up and went to the piano and played. Keys’ set had several signature moments, including “You Don’t Know My Name” and “Fallin’.” And though she did show her skills on the piano for cuts like “Diary,” A.K. got up and danced on several selections, including “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready).” Related Photos Essence Music Festival Takes Over New Orleans Superdome Related Artists Mary J. ‘Eclipse’ Sets Box-Office Record For Midnight Screenings

More than $30 million gross tops previous record-holder ‘New Moon.’ By Kara Warner Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit In knowing the fervor and devotion of “Twilight” fans, it should come as no surprise that ticket sales for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” have broken the record for highest-grossing midnight screenings — previously held by “New Moon.” According to the film’s distributor, Summit Entertainment, “Eclipse” took in more than $30 million from midnight screenings on Wednesday (June 30), with final box-office numbers to be determined once the studio finishes its final count. The previous record for midnight showings is $26.3 million, set on the opening day for “New Moon” last November. “Eclipse” will have to break $72.7 million to beat its predecessor in the all-time opening-day-gross category, but given the strong numbers Wednesday, and the fact that “Moon” opened on a Friday, not midweek, it is fair to say the third chapter in the hugely popular film franchise is on track to rake in serious dough throughout its opening weekend. “Eclipse” ranks as the widest domestic release in history , opening in 4,416 theaters in North America, beating the record set earlier this year by “Iron Man 2.” Four-thousand of those theaters held midnight screenings. Several theater chains also reportedly had 3 a.m. screenings to meet public demand. IMAX was expected to hold 3 a.m. screenings in 120 of its theaters. In addition to being on par to break the “New Moon” opening-day and midnight-screening records, “Eclipse” has a shot at besting the record for a movie opening over the Fourth of July weekend. That record is currently at $200 million, set by last year’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Drake Visits Grandmother In Exclusive ‘Better Than Good Enough’ Outtake

Photographer Jonathan Mannion recalls Drake telling grandmother that he had become a millionaire. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV News After Drake inked his record deal with the Universal Motown family (in partnership with Lil Wayne’s Young Money label), the Toronto lyricist visited his grandmother shortly after to share the good news. Photographer Jonathan Mannion was present, shooting images of the pair, and recalled the moment Drake and his grandmother had, which he explains in this exclusive outtake from the MTV documentary “Drake: Better Than Good Enough.” “We went to visit his grandmother in a nursing home,” Mannion says. “It was really a conversation between them and they were talking about how they used to do crossword puzzles and learn words together. That kind of stuff. And she was like, ‘It’s really paying off now.’ ” Mannion described his favorite shot from the visit, which depicts an exchange of affection between the two; he said the image hit home for him how rooted in family the So Far Gone star really was. According to Mannion, Drake notified his grandmother that he signed his record deal and now had millions of dollars in his account. He asked her what she wanted, telling her that since he finally made it he could now buy her anything in the world she desired “You have a million dollars!,” she said, Mannion recalled. The rapper corrected her, responded that he has millions in the bank now and she could have anything she wants. “How about a hug and kiss?,” she told him. “He just leaned over and kissed her on the forehead,” Mannion says, as he shows the image on his computer. “It was the sweetest moment. That, I think, is a real reference to how grounded [Drake] is.” MTV followed Drake in the weeks leading up to the release of his new LP, Thank Me Later. The “Drake: Better Than Good Enough” documentary will re-air on MTV Saturday at 12 p.m. and 9 p.m., Sunday at 9 a.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. on MTV2. Bun B Says Tupac, Pimp C ‘Right Now’ Verses Feel ‘Natural’

‘We got a song that spans across three decades,’ UGK MC tells Mixtape Daily ; Trey Songz also guests on new track. By Shaheem Reid Bun B Photo: MTV News Cornerstone Credentials: UGK and Tupac Shakur Bun B knows he has an angel in his corner, with Pimp C looking down on him from up above. And Bun smiles as he talks about a record off of his upcoming LP, Trill O.G. The song features Pimp, Trey Songz and the late Tupac Shakur. The Port Arthur, Texas, legend says that it feels like a higher power intervened allowing the cut “Right Now” to come to fruition. “I don’t know, the big man was with us on this one,” Bun said of his late UGK partner, Pimp C, earlier this week in New York. “It was a song that was originally recorded in one version for a Tupac tribute album. Whatever reason, it didn’t make the [Tupac] album and ended up getting locked up in a vault. Somebody opened up the vaults and was like, ‘We got this record y’all did. Do you still want the record?’ We put some new music on top of it to get it back to a fresher feeling and give it more of a party vibe. When you listen to it, it really was a party record. [Producer] Steve Below put a real good beat behind it. I went in and did a fresh verse, got a new hook to it. “I always knew we would have to get somebody new to sing the hook because that ain’t my job. I’m an MC. We called up the young boy Trey, he was more than happy to fit us in his hectic schedule. He was getting ready to go out on the [ Blueprint 3 ] Tour. He worked it out for us. I think we put together something people are going to be playing for a long time.” Bun said the track also captures his UGK partner’s essence. “Anybody that knows Pimp’s personality, this is classic Pimp C — definitely talking about the ladies, definitely talking about getting money,” Bun said. “Same thing with Tupac; to me, this is the ‘Let Me See It’ Pimp C-meets-the ‘I Get Around’ Tupac. It’s a fun time had on this record. I think a lot of people will have a good time when they hear it. The craziest thing about this record is when you think about it, Tupac’s verse is from the ’90s. Pimp C’s verse is from the 2000s. My verse is from 2010. We got a song that spans across three decades and is just coming out now. And it’s gonna crush anything that’s out there. It sounds like we all literally came out the booth yesterday. It feels natural.” With such storied careers, it’s easy to imagine UGK and Tupac would’ve collaborated while Pimp and ‘Pac were still around, but oddly, Bun said they didn’t cross paths. “We never got to meet ‘Pac,” Bun said. ” ‘Pac got our album, I believe Edi [from the Outlawz] was saying, maybe two weeks before he passed away. Scarface gave Tupac the UGK Ridin’ Dirty album. ‘Pac went to Edi and said, ‘I don’t know who these dudes is’ — this is what Edi is telling us — ‘but they gonna be down with us. They talking about the same thing we talking about. These dudes is gonna be down with us, they on the same thing we on.’ It was crazy because Edi told us [Tupac] got the album and he was listening to it. And in one week, he lost two cousins. ‘One Day’ was a big record for him. Literally, one day [his cousins] were here, the next day they were gone. That [song] was something that helped them get through what he was going through at the time.” Trill O.G. comes out August 3, and besides features from ‘Pac and Pimp, Young Jeezy, Drake, Gucci Mane, LeToya Luckett, Yo Gotti and the aforementioned Trey Songz all appear on the LP. World Cup 2010: Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba may start against Brazil

• Striker with broken arm came on in cast against Portugal • Sven-Goran Eriksson hints Didier Drogba may start Sven-Goran Eriksson has hinted that Didier Drogba may be fit to start for the Ivory Coast against Brazil on Sunday in Johannesburg despite a fractured arm. “Do not be surprised if Didier Drogba starts the next game against Brazil,” the Ivory Coast football federation’s website reported the Swedish coach saying ahead of his side’s second match in the World Cup’s Group G. “He [Drogba] made a valuable contribution in the 25 minutes he was on the pitch against Portugal,” Eriksson said. Drogba, following a speedy recovery, was cleared to play in Ivory Coast’s first World Cup game with a protective cast on the right arm he fractured during a friendly game against Japan. “He is an important player in the team … and his health has improved markedly,” Eriksson said. Following a goalless draw in their first match against Portugal, Ivory Coast face Brazil in their second game in a group that also includes North Korea. Eriksson said although he respected Brazil, he was not scared by the prospect of playing against the team ranked No1 in the world. “It is going to be a difficult game, but looking at what we did against Portugal, we are capable of creating a surprise against Brazil,” he said. Brazil top Group G with three points after scraping a 2-1 win over North Korea in their first game. England, coached by Eriksson, lost 2-1 to Brazil in the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup, which the South Americans went on to win. England aiming to sign off for summer with rare victory in Australia | Robert Kitson

• ‘Some won’t get a chance to play in a Test in Australia again’ • Defining moment for Martin Johnson’s World Cup planning One game should not define a season, but England know there are exceptions. A big defeat in the second and final Test will confirm the worst fears of those who suspect the coaches are flogging a dead horse. Victory, on the other hand, would allow the management to insist their World Cup plans are gathering momentum. There is hardly any middle ground still available for rent. Even a gallant loss would underline what the rugby world has come to believe: that England talk a better game than they play in terms of beating the southern hemisphere’s finest. Australia are a good side but their current scrum issues make them more vulnerable than they might be. If Martin Johnson’s squad wish to enjoy their holidays, it is important they erase the memory of their diffident display in Perth. Precisely that message will be repeated before kick-off by coaches and senior players alike. “We’ve got a chance to put the record straight,” said Nick Easter, the England No8 who, by his own admission, fell below the required standard last week. “You want to have a summer when you can look back and be pleased with your last performance, otherwise you’ll be stewing. We’ve got to go out and show a lot more than we did last Saturday.” Johnson has also reminded everyone that places in England’s 32-man elite squad to be named next month remain unbooked, well aware that Wednesday’s game against New Zealand Maoris in Napier is unlikely to supply much solace. A potential tour record of one scratchy win from five games will not rank as a great leap forward. “Some of the guys won’t get a chance to play in a Testmatch in Australia again,” he said. Barring a marked upturn, several are unlikely to be tackling the Wallabies at Twickenham this November either. At least the cheery mood during training at North Sydney Oval was encouraging. Maybe the sunshine helped, but the squad contains enough talent and enthusiasm to hint at better days ahead if the players can escape their current underachieving rut. Ben Youngs has the ability to match his contemporary Will Genia as a backline catalyst and his first Test start will be instructive. If the Leicester scrum-half shines, it might even persuade Johnson to start thinking like an Australian and blood the likes of Alex Goode on the enlightened basis that class is permanent and immaturity is temporary. It would also help if the French referee Romain Poite, as he surely will, takes a sadistic interest in the scrum engagements. At times last week England’s tight-head Dan Cole unquestionably used illegal tactics to destabilise his opponent Ben Daley, but he is good enough to make life difficult without resorting to the dark arts. Tim Payne, even so, has cautioned against assuming the Wallabies scrum will be minced again. “Without a shadow of a doubt, they’ll be better,” the loose-head said. “I’m sure they’ll have hit the scrum machine many times this week.” Either way, England crave a collective performance that is not entirely down to their scrummagers or the slowly fading veterans of the 2003 World Cup final triumph in the same arena. Australia remains mystified at Jonny Wilkinson’s non-selection, with the former Wallabies centre Tim Horan declaring it “a decision Martin Johnson is likely to regret”. The hosts should clinch a 2-0 win but the ghost in the white No10 jersey has yet to be exorcised Down Under. If Jonny rises off the bench and slots another winning drop-goal the groans will be audible from Canberra to Cape Tribulation. Eminem Says ‘Slim Shady’ Wasn’t Right for Recovery

But Em assures fans that his rowdy alter ego isn’t going anywhere: ‘Shady still exists.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Eminem burst on the scene in 1999 with The Slim Shady LP, which introduced the world to Marshall Mathers’ manic, violent alter ego Slim Shady. Shady’s mercurial behavior has captivated fans throughout Em’s career, as Slim took cheeky shots at everyone from ‘NSYNC to his own mentor Dr. Dre and murdered his longtime gal pal Kim (only on wax, of course). Recently, the amped-up Shady has taken a backseat to Eminem’s candid rhymes about his struggles with fame and addiction. However, Em said that he hasn’t completely killed the Shady persona; it’s just not right for Recovery. “Shady still exists. But I don’t think the subjects on this record call for, you know, ‘bring the chainsaws and axes out and murder everyone on this record,’ ” Em told The New York Times in a recent interview. “There was so much stuff like that off the last record that I felt like I was starting to run it into the ground. I think consciously I went in a different direction with this record.” Em has been given a hard time for his hard-hitting rhymes, but when the Times pressed the star about whether he had any regrets about using unsavory terms when referring to women, he maintained that he was simply expressing his feelings honestly. “Anything I’ve ever said, I certainly was feeling at the time,” Eminem said. “But I think I’ve calmed down a bit. My overall look on things is a lot more mature than it used to be.” The star has certainly changed his outlook, as he mentioned in the same Times article, which will run in Sunday’s issue, that he supports gay marriage . Eminem’s Recovery is set to hit stores June 21. The album was pushed up a day after the much-anticipated follow-up to Relapse leaked online earlier this month.
