Drake Premieres First Single ‘Over’

The first official track from Thank Me Later debuts on Toronto radio. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Paola Kudacki/GQ After a nearly yearlong wait for his fans, Drake’s debut single off of his debut album Thank Me Later is here. The song, “Over,” deals with Drake coming to grips with fame. And just like Drizzy chose to stay with his home team, Young Money, when signing his record deal, he also chose to debut his first official record in his hometown, on Toronto radio station 93.5 the Flow. The song is also available for download on Drake’s Web site . “Bottles on me, long as someone drink it,” the 23-year-old raps in a slow, aggressive flow. “Never drop the ball, f— is y’all thinking?/ Making sure the Young Money ship is never sinking/ ‘Bout to set it off in this b—-, Jada Pinkett/ You too fine to be laying down in bed alone/ I can teach you how to speak my language, Rosetta Stone.” The track was produced by Boi-1da and has an energetic feel. ” ‘Bout to go Thriller, Mike Jackson on these n—-s,” Drake later raps. “All I need is a f—— red jacket with some zippers.” Even with anticipation for the record through the roof, Drake said he’s keeping everything in perspective. “This is my first song,” he told radio-show hosts Jus Red and Jwyze. “This is still my first single of my first album. This is still the beginning, as great as everything has gone.” “I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year,” Drake sings on the hook. “Who the f— are y’all?/ I swear it feels like the last few nights we been everywhere and back/ But I just can’t remember it all/ What am I doing? What am I doing?/ Oh yeah, that’s right/ I’m doing me, I’m doing me/ I’m living life right now, man, and this what I’mma do till it’s over/ Till it’s over/ But it’s far from over.” “I went with ‘Over’ as the first look because of the words in the hook,” he said. “The hook being the most repetitive part. I got a lot of great songs on my album. I got songs for women who wanna feel special. I got songs for dudes — if you ever thought my music was too soft, this is one you will enjoy. I got a lot of variety on there, but the biggest thing was that opening line on the hook: ‘I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year.’ “I’ve just gone so many places in a short amount of time,” he added. “This record sums up where I am right now in my career. I think it’s a great first impression. The album is gong to be a great body of work for you to get lost in. Right now I just wanna have some fun. When we’re out partying, I want people to have some fun too, because this is the one.” The video for “Over” is scheduled to be filmed soon in Los Angeles. Related Artists Drake

Young Jeezy Talks Plies Collabo, Says Next Album Will Drop In June

‘It’s go time,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of finishing up Thug Motivation 103. By Shaheem Reid Young Jeezy Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive On Tuesday night, Young Jeezy and his Mob Squad lit up Madison Square Garden during the Blueprint 3 Tour stop. “It’s not a rap concert; it’s a show,” Jeezy said just hours before the performance. “Me and Jay sat down and talked about it. That was the whole thing: ‘Let’s give them a concert, not just a rap show.’ It’s been working out that way. From start to finish, it’s a whole show. Trey [Songz], me, Jay — from start to finish, it flows. It’s kinda crazy, ’cause we got the same type of fans. It’s not awkward. You could be on tour with somebody, you see Jeezy and Black Eyed Peas, it’s like, ‘What the hell?’ ” Young just put out the first record from his Thug Motivation 103 album, “Lose My Mind.” The record features Plies and debuted in a live performance Saturday during the Blueprint 3 Tour stop in Atlanta. “To keep it all the way 100 with you, we did a record called ‘So Sad,’ ” Jeezy said about how he got with Plies. “Before I could put it out, the record leaked, so we was good on that. Then I was gonna do a record for him [for his album]. I did the record, by the way, but I had ‘Lose My Mind.’ I done three verses. I listened to it a couple of times. I said, ‘Let me try something. I’mma put somebody on the record.’ I was doing a joint for him at the time and happened to see him. We was doing something for [NBA] All-Star [Weekend]. I was like, ‘Yo, I’mma get you this record, see if you like it.’ He sent it right back. I went with it. Just to warm up the streets, let them know I’m coming.” Jeezy said he decided to premiere the song in front of the crowd at the Philips Arena on Saturday to let them know that he has something concrete done and the album is coming soon. “It was new, so it was cool. But everybody was like, ‘When is TM103 coming out?’ But it’s like the block: I ain’t gonna put it out there unless it’s rock, unless it’s hard, unless it’s right,” he explained. “I wanted to get in the kitchen, in the lab, and do my thing and put it out when it’s time. I’m ready now. It don’t stop there. It’s go time.” Young described “Lose My Mind” as a quick snapshot of his nightlife. “To me, it’s my life,” Jeezy said. “That’s how I feel sometimes when I go out. If you listen to me, I said it a few times: ‘Lost my mind and my cell phone in the same night.’ No two days are the same. … I been partying my whole life. That’s how you feel the next day. You killed them, and you left. You was looking good, shining good, there’s no limit to what you can have in the club. That’s how it’s been for us before music. ‘Lose My Mind’ is doing what the hell I wanna do in the club. If it’s 100 bottles of ros

A Formal Offer of Employment for John Mayer, Gawker Columnist [Offers]

On Friday evening, John Mayer publicly apologized to a gathered “at capacity” audience for the recent kerfuffle over his Playboy interview. We would like to now take this time to finally extend a formal employment offer for Mr. Mayer. Dear John – We recently got wind of your apology at Madison Square Garden (“The Garden”) on Friday, February 26, 2009, sometime in the evening, during one of your performances. You explained to the audience before you, and we quote (via the New York Daily News ): “I hate to come off like an a—hole ever, and thank you guys for believing that I am not an a—hole,” he said. “It’s a clean me now, people, clean me….Never, ever, in my entire life did I ever think that it would be a good idea to be an a—hole…But you know what? There’s plenty of a—holes who think the same thing, so I have to thank you.” The article was entitled: John Mayer attempts to rescue his shamed reputation by apologizing – again – for being an ‘a—hole’. Let us assure you, Mr. Mayer, that your reputation for what noted, established urban sociologist Robert Sylvester Kelly once established as ” Real Talk ” has been violently misconstrued; the multitude of your talents has been, in a word, steamrolled. We see them differently. Particularly, as they were intended . It was once noted: ” If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter. ” George Washington said that. And the next person to say the next thing to be quoted in our next recruitment letter can—and should—be you. Why? Because that shit was funny . But an explosive reaction ensued for various reasons, chief among them: the words weren’t entirely coming from you. There was a middleman involved. Sure, you said them. And you took responsibility for them. But you didn’t write them. And you weren’t in control of the context. Which, regardless of the words within, were notably legion . Even the writer of the interview, Rob Tannenbaum, noted: The article is long and it’s complicated. It’s 6,870 words total. Holly Robinson Peete, an actress Mayer mentioned in the interview, called it on her blog “quite possibly one of the longest interviews ever published.” Which isn’t a fact (Playboy publishes an interview of that length every month), but it is a feeling. Articles are much shorter now. So are sentences. Who has time to read 6,870 words? If you just thought to yourself, Not many people! you’re correct. Enter the blog post. Short. Concise. Or shorter and more concise than other things people don’t take time to read. If you could go back and make “Split Screen Sadness” a better song, would you? Maybe. Maybe not. But you can’t . You know what’s nice about blogging? You can . Just ask Nikki Finke . But you probably wouldn’t make that mistake. Given your record of saying things that may offend people, you’re not “batting well.” Given your record of blogging, you’re 1.000 . As previously noted, your takedown of the celebrity paparazzi paraphernalia leech-economy complex was masterful. Your call-to-action against conspicuous media consumption was, in a word, inspired , plunging one of our writers into a bout of insecure paranoia . A good columnist can do this! This all goes without mentioning that everyone thinks you already work for us anyway . Jobs in this media economy are scarce , Mr. Mayer. Your reputation and talent for producing excellent editorial web content—and demonstration of a natural ability for creative prose—can be combined for what we see as a mutually beneficial relationship: an ability for you to get your message out to a wider audience, control it, and grow creatively. With that, the Weekend Gawker Services division of Gawker Dot Com, a Gawker Media property, would like to extend a formal offer of employment for you to join us as a guest columnist. We’ll pay you our regular columnist rate, which, upon receipt notification of this agreement , we’ll discuss further. But one thing’s certain: you can stop apologizing, and start being proactive. We’re in a troubling economy, our talents, diverse as they are, should all be put to good use. For you, for readers, for America. Basically, stop being a pussy and write for us. Or at the very least, get a new publicist. For fuck’s sake. We look forward to hearing from you, and for the fruits this beautiful editorial relationship will bear. So long as they don’t involve any literal incarnations of your penis. Regards, Foster Kamer Vice President of Editorial Content – Weekend Gawker Gawker.com FK/ym DBNR CC: Remy Stern

Roscoe Dash Says ‘All The Way Turnt Up’ Is ‘New Age Crunk’

‘Roscoe, he goes hard,’ Soulja Boy Tell’em says. By Shaheem Reid Roscoe Dash Photo: MTV News Roscoe Dash’s “All the Way Turnt Up” is so hot that artists such as Ludacris and Lupe Fiasco had to jump on it and put it on their mixtapes — but Soulja Boy Tell’em openly lobbied via Twitter to appear on the record officially. “When I first heard the ‘All the Way Turnt Up’ song, Roscoe reminded me of myself,” Soulja said recently on the Atlanta set of the video. “I was like, ‘That sounds like a “Turn My Swag On” times 10. I gotta get on that. Roscoe, he goes hard.” Dash, who is a new signee to Soulja Boy’s recording home Interscope Records, obliged the request. “The definition of ‘All the Way Turnt Up’ is a new age crunk — a 2010 crunk,” said Dash, whose stage surname was inspired by the fastest of “The Incredibles.” “I’m not afraid to be different, or do things other people would be afraid to do or do different because they’re afraid of what somebody else might say. I don’t have that thought process.” “Turnt Up” went through some controversy last year when Dash, born Jeffrey Johnson Jr., had guest stars Travis Porter on the record. They put the song out on their mixtape and fans thought the record was actually Travis Porter featuring ATL (Dash’s former moniker) instead of the other way around. The trio have been dropped from the song, as Roscoe is trying to forge his own brand. “When I heard the beat I said, ‘I have to make something different than anything that’s out right now,’ ” Dash explained. “Roscoe Dash is somebody who’s versatile and has a big wide body of different sounds. I just run with it and make good music.” The video for “All the Way Turnt Up” premieres soon and Dash’s debut album Ready Set Go! is slated for a May 11 release. Lloyd Banks Calls ‘We Are The World’ Remake ‘A Good Look’

‘They brought it to a new audience,’ the G-Unit rapper says of the Haiti benefit single. By Shaheem Reid Lloyd Banks Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Lloyd Banks said he wasn’t deeply touched by the original version of “We Are the World” when it came out in 1985; the Southside Queens native was just barely 2 years old when the star-studded charity record debuted. So, understandably, Banks said he has no problem with the record being remade . “To be honest with you, I’m very aware of the record and how big the record was,” he said Wednesday afternoon at the G-Unit office. “But I was so young at the time, it really doesn’t affect me the way it would affect an older rapper. They might have completely understood what the record was. It doesn’t disappoint me they had rap in it now. It’s kids out there that never heard the record to begin with. I can’t say they messed the record up. If anything, they brought it to a new audience. “Michael Jackson was a phenomenal artist. It will never be another one of those guys,” Banks added. “So anything would have not topped [the original version]. You could have anybody sing on that. But it was a good look. It was for a good cause.” Jay-Z, meanwhile, told MTV News that the original was “untouchable” and was surprised that it was remade. Banks found out about the tragic earthquake in Haiti when he was released from jail in Canada and came back home to the U.S. The G-Unit rapper was arrested for assault and robbery last month after an alleged dispute with a concert promoter. “Actually, when I had first came back from jail, I seen that,” he explained. “It was the first thing I saw in the airport. It really bothered me. People was sending me stuff through the phone; [pictures] of people lined up dead. It really bothered me. From that point on, I was like, ‘Whatever I could do [to help], I’ll be there. A concert or whatever.’ I have a lot of close friends that are Haitian, including Sha Money XL, Tony Yayo, Whoo Kid and some of my guys from the street. It’s like, ‘Damn, they got family members they still haven’t heard from to this day.’ I wouldn’t know what I would do in that situation. My heart goes out to all those people who lost somebody.” Related Videos Behind The Scenes Of ‘We Are The World’ Related Photos ‘We Are The World 25 For Haiti’ Recording Session
