Miley Cyrus Says Next Album Has A ‘Techno Vibe’

‘It’s good to blast in your car,’ the ‘Last Song’ star says of her LP, due in June. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage After her summer album release, Miley Cyrus wants to take a break from making music. But her fans still have that next album to look forward to before she focuses solely on making movies, like “The Last Song,” out Friday (April 2). So what can they expect from Cyrus’ next batch of new music? “My record is coming out this summer,” she said. “I’m excited about that. I’m looking forward to that, and then hopefully I can continue to do more films. [The album is] a little different. It’s kind of poppier, but then it still has an edge. All of my music kind of has to. I think it’s really fun. It’s definitely a good summer CD. It’s good to blast in your car.” While much of Cyrus’ music has been more pop and even touched on country, she said this next album will have a bit of a Lady Gaga influence to it. “My new record has more of a techno vibe on some stuff. It’s fun,” she said. “You know, I just want to kind of do all different types of music, same as I do with movies. I never want to get stuck in a rut and just do one thing.” In addition to the music on her own album, she has a duet with Bret Michaels, “Nothin’ to Lose,” for his record. The duo got some heat for the song’s racy content, but Cyrus just brushed it off. “I’ve always been super into his music,” she said. “He was the first concert that I ever went to, and it’s great when you can find people you can jive with and get along with.” As much as she loves music, Cyrus said she’s ready for a break. “I have one more record coming out this summer in June, and then after that, I want to take a step back from music for a while,” she explained. “I want to continue to do film. Later in life, another record. But for now, I’d like to focus on movies.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Last Song.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Good Charlotte Wanted To ‘Dig Deep’ For Cardiology

Joel and Benji Madden recorded, scrapped, then re-recorded their heartfelt project. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Good Charlotte’s Joel and Benji Madden Photo: MTV News Good Charlotte have spent the past 18 months prepping Cardiology, their fifth studio album. The band wrote and recorded an entire album’s worth of material, then, unhappy with the results, decided to scrap the project entirely and start over again from scratch with a new producer at the helm. Needless to say, it’s been a bit of a struggle. The kind of thing that adds years — and, in this case, family members — to people’s lives. “I started this record with one child; now I have two,” smiled frontman Joel Madden, who got engaged to longtime girlfriend Nicole Richie in February.. “And now, the record is like my third child.” The process began with producer Howard Benson, famous for his work with acts like My Chemical Romance and the All-American Rejects. But the Madden brothers weren’t thinking about his pedigree when they listened to some of Benson’s mixes. “We pretty much finished the record [with him],” guitarist Benji Madden said. “And we had to go to Australia to do some TV stuff, and we came back, sat down and listened to a few rough [mixes] and … it just didn’t have that vibe. I didn’t connect with it the way I needed to. When we wrote the songs, I connected to them. They were everything I envisioned them being. It was just that [Benson] didn’t want to try anything. He just didn’t get it. So I was like, ‘We need to throw it away. I never want to hear it again.’ And I never listened to it again. I have the hard drive at my house, and I’m going to destroy it. We don’t have any need for that record.” Dejected, the Maddens met with longtime friend and frequent collaborator Don Gilmore, hoping to get some advice about how to resurrect the project. Instead, Gilmore ended up producing the new sessions, and the difference was startling. “Don said, ‘Maybe we should go up to Vancouver.’ That’s where we did our last record, and so we went up there, and worked with him, and the magic — exactly what I was looking for — happened,” Benji explained. “You could feel it. The thing I was really, really going for on this record was there. And Don knew it too. We both wanted to make something special. When someone puts their headphones on and listens to this record, I want them to feel connected to us, and I want them to feel like they know us.” That’s the reason the album (which is tentatively due in August/September) is called Cardiology : It comes from the heart. And though making it was a struggle, the entire band emerged from the process stronger, closer and — perhaps most important of all — reinvigorated. “We were like, ‘You know, we really want to dig deep on this record, just kind of reconnect with the fans that have been with us the whole way.’ Just kind of let them back in. And that’s what we tried to do,” Benji said. “And we started writing this record, and it really started to mean a lot to me, and I kind of fell in love with being in a band all over again, fell in love with making music all over again, just got real passionate about it.” The brothers say that the result is an album that’s an unabashed ode to the pop-punk acts the band grew up listening to. The kind of stuff they’ve always wanted to play and finally feel liberated enough to do so. “There’s a song that I wrote for my kids that is personally my favorite, ‘Harlowe’s Song.’ But there’s a song I really love called ‘Crash,’ and I don’t know why, but I really love it,” Joel said. “I think it will be great live. There’s an element of pop-punk on this record that’s kind of returned a bit.” “One of my favorites is a song called ‘Silver Screen Romance,’ and it’s totally the Good Charlotte return to pop-punk,” Benji added. “I don’t think we could’ve written this song a few years ago, but it’s a feel-good song. It just sounds like classic Good Charlotte to me.” Related Artists Good Charlotte

Ryan Ross Says It’s ‘Us Versus The World’ With The Young Veins

‘If you like it, then you do,’ he says of new group’s debut album. By James Montgomery The Young Veins’ Jon Walker and Ryan Ross Photo: MTV News When MTV News last spoke to Ryan Ross , he was in the process of finding a label to release Take a Vacation, the debut disc from his new band the Young Veins. He was confident that the hunt for a label would be resolved in a matter of weeks and that, finally, the Veins would have something (a single, a video, a tour) to show for all their hard work. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite work out that way. When MTV News spoke to Ross and the Veins at South By Southwest, Vacation still hadn’t been released, and their tour was only a few dates old. Yet, to a man — and there are five of them in the band these days — their confidence hadn’t waned, and with good reason: After months of searching, they’d finally found a suitable home for their album, which will hit stores on June 8. “It’s coming out on a label called One Haven — it’s pretty new. There’s only, like, four artists on it now and Butch Walker is one of them,” Ross told MTV News. “To be honest, the search for a label was really weird, because some of the labels that you wouldn’t expect to care about stuff like radio formats were the ones that did care. They were like, ‘Yeah, we love this record, but what are we going to play on the radio?’ And I was like, ‘You don’t have bands on the radio.’ ” And the question of format — just where does the Young Veins’ crackling, retro-leaning rock fit in the context of today’s exceedingly grim radio landscape? — is perhaps the most daunting challenge they face on their road to success. As Ross himself puts it, “I don’t know if we fit in at all, actually. “I don’t think there are a lot of bands that sound the way we do, who play the same kind of rock we do,” he smiled. “But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that at all.” And in statements like that you catch a glimpse of Ross’ swagger, the thing that polarizes most fans of his former band, Panic! at the Disco, and has earned him a certain, uh, reputation amongst those in the industry . It’s very much alive in the Young Veins’ music too. After all, Vacation gleefully — and some might say, stubbornly — flies in the face of most modern rock axioms. It clocks in at just a hair under 30 minutes. The songs pop and hiss and are totally free of today’s studio sheen. It was made on the fly, on the cheap and practically on the lam. It is very much a labor of love, made for (and by) a very select group of retro-rock fanatics. Ross said that was the most important aspect — he wanted to get his friends together in a house and just make a record they’d all love. He’s not worried what Panic! fans — or the record-buying public, for that matter — will think of the tunes. All of that will take care of itself. “The record’s out in early June, and after that, who knows? Some of the kids don’t seem to like it, and they don’t get it, and that’s fine, I understand,” he said. “There’s definitely a sense of ‘us versus the world’ with this band. We all sort of see it as we’re all in this together. And we’re all really happy about the music we’re doing, so it’s kind of worth it. I don’t like to say, ‘Hey, we’re really good. Check this out.’ If you like it, then you do. We’re definitely working way harder than we ever have.”

Drake’s ‘Shut It Down,’ Featuring The-Dream, Hits The Web

Dream calls the Thank Me Later track ‘an incredible record.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Shaheem Reid The Dream Photo: MTV News Drake’s “Over,” the lead offering from his Thank Me Later debut, has already won the support of DJs , but the Toronto MC has another track on deck, featuring The-Dream , that’s long been rumored to be his first single. An unfinished version of the song, a slow-winding number called “Shut It Down,” leaked online over the weekend. “[It’s] a great-sounding record,” The-Dream told MTV News recently. “He wrote an incredible record and allowed me to feature on this record. Beautifully written, and the guys that did the track [producers Omen and 40 made a] great track.” On “Shut It Down,” Drake and Dream take turns wooing females and professing their appreciation for their beauty. “Shut it down, down, down, down,” Drake sings. “You would shut it down, be the baddest girl around, ’round, ’round, and they know this.” The song hit the Web not long after “Over” premiered March 4 on a local radio station in Toronto and then on the singer/rapper’s blog. He recently shot a video for the track in Los Angeles with director Anthony Mandler. The-Dream said his “Shut It Down” collabo with Drake came about organically. “I don’t know how these things just, you know, they just happen,” the songwriter explained. “You get a call and you are in there doing the record, and it just happens, man. There are so many things going on right now with me, I don’t even know what’s happening tomorrow. There may be somebody waiting outside for a guest appearance.” What do you think of “Shut It Down” and “Over”? Who else would you like to see Drake work with for Thank Me Later ? Justin Bieber Promises My World 2.0 Will Be ‘A Lot Of Fun’

Teen pop star’s sophomore album drops Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News & Docs On Tuesday, fans will finally get a chance to get Justin Bieber’s sophomore album, My World 2.0. The teen pop star said he made sure he worked with the best people to get the right sound on the LP. “It’s gonna be a lot of fun, the album,” he told MTV News. “I co-wrote everything on the album, and I got to work with a lot of cool producers. I got to work with The-Dream, I worked with … a lot of cool people, so it was a lot of fun.” His favorite song on the album is “Up,” and he’s also partial to second single “U Smile.” “I worked with [Dan] August [Rigo]. I got him. He’s a really good writer,” Bieber said of his friend and collaborator. “The song is amazing. We really love the song, so we decided to cut it. It’s really amazing.” Ludacris contributed a verse to the album’s first track, “Baby,” and Bieber teased that “Baby” video co-star Drake might appear on the LP. “He’s just one of my good buddies. He’s here to hang out,” Bieber said, adding that if you want to know who else might pop up on the album, “You’ll have to see when it comes out.” The album’s lead single was produced by The-Dream, who raved about working with Bieber. “I wrote the single, ‘Baby,’ that features Ludacris, which is doing very good right now,” he said. Working with Bieber was a bit of a challenge for Luda, who had to enter a different headspace to write his verse. “They sent me the record, and I knew it was an instant smash,” Ludacris recalled. “I sat there and said, ‘Lemme just reminisce on the past and think about things I was thinking about when I was his age,’ and that’s basically how I stepped on the record. I guarantee — you mark my word — that’s gonna be one of the biggest songs of 2010.” While working on 2.0, Luda said he learned that he and Bieber are more alike than he would have imagined. “When I first met Justin, man, I felt like he’s definitely a little shy at first,” the rapper said. “I understand. I’m kind of the same way till I get comfortable with my surroundings, and then it’s just all out, just wild. Oh man, his career is just starting. When I tell you the longevity — he’s out of here.” Are you excited for Bieber’s album? Tell us in the comments! Juelz Santana Talks NYC Collabo With Lloyd Banks, Jadakiss, Fabolous

Santana divulges details on his ‘Beamer, Benz or Bentley’ follow-up to Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Juelz Santana Photo: John Ricard/FilmMagic The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Lloyd Banks and Juelz Santana have perhaps the biggest record in New York City right now with “Beamer, Benz or Bentley.” Santana recently told us about the next shout-out to the Big Apple — he’s lined up some of NYC’s finest for a track from his upcoming The Reagan Era mixtape. “We got another record for the mixtape,” Juelz explained of how he and Banks plan to follow up their current smash. “That record’s actually got me, Fabolous, Jadakiss and Banks on it. … We took the Estelle sample from ‘American Boy’ that goes ‘Take me to New York’ and kept repeating that. I sent it to everybody that I felt [could kill it], which was me, Fab, Banks and Jada. But me and Banks gonna have to do another one together with just me and him. That record is crazy. That Reagan Era is gonna be a problem — that’s why I been taking my time strategically building up. I think now is a better time. Every day I’m drawing more attention to myself.” While Juelz has the video for his record with Lil Wayne “Home Run” — also off of The Reagan Era — coming soon, he’s still excited about “Beamer, Benz or Bentley.” “I knew what that song was gonna be when we did the record,” Juelz said about his duet with Banks. “The beat is so unique, then you got two artists that’s never done a record before. And it’s a record that people would like to hear. It’s a ‘hood record and we was both spitting on there — you rarely get that anymore, especially with two artists like me and Banks. A lot of time people teaming up and they just making records because the names sound good. But the records don’t sound good because they either rushed or n—as just getting up just to get up. You know how they say when two artists get together and make a song how it is supposed to be? It completes everything we do. It’s radio, but it’s still hard. ‘Beamer, Benz or Bentley,’ that’s still ‘hood rich. It captures the essence that people would have liked for it to have with me and Banks on the same record.” Santana says The Reagan Era will be out before the end of the month. Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Wants To Drop Hot Sauce This Fall

MCA is on the mend after cancer treatment, but the group may ‘reevaluate’ new album. By Gil Kaufman Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Photo: Mark Von Holden/ Getty Images After being diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland last summer, the Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch is on the mend and thinking about music again. The MC, who underwent surgery and treatment in the fall, told Entertainment Weekly that he’s ready to get back to work. “I feel better,” Yauch said on Friday at the Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles. “It was touch and go there for a while, but I am finally getting my energy back.” Yauch announced on July 20 that the discovery of the cancer would necessitate the canceling of all of the Beasties’ planned summer-festival appearances and push back their new album, Hot Sauce Committee, Part One, while he underwent treatment. According to a band spokesperson, because the cancer was discovered early and localized in an area that does not affect Yauch’s vocal cords, it is believed the surgery was successful. While a the album, originally due out last September, is not yet officially rescheduled, Yauch said he expects it to drop this September. “It was really disappointing to have to hold the record and postpone the tour, but doctor’s orders,” he told EW. “We may or may not [release the album], depending on how my health is come September. We want to but we have to play it by ear.” Either way, the B-Boys are planning on taking another listen to the tracks they had prepped to see if some tweaking is in order. “I was just talking to Adam [Horovitz] and Mike [D] today on the phone and we were talking about working on it a bit,” Yauch said. “We finished the record over a year ago, so we want to take a look at it and reevaluate and make sure it is what we want to put out there and that we are still happy with it. I don’t think we will change it up too much.” A spokesperson for the group could not be reached at press time to confirm a new release date. Related Artists Beastie Boys

Travis McCoy Says New Album Is ‘Music To Have A Good Time To’

‘Now a lot of the records are happy,’ Gym Class Heroes frontman says. By James Montgomery Travis “Travie” McCoy First things first: Travis McCoy wants to be known as “Travie” these days. After all, that’s how he’s always been known amongst his family and friends. “I mean, anybody who knows me already calls me that. No one in my circle calls me Travis. Even my family, at a young age started calling me ‘Travie,’ ” he said, cracking up slightly. “So I want people to feel comfortable calling me ‘Travie.’ It’s almost like inviting people in. You can be part of the family, so long as you buy the album.” And that brings us to the second point — his long-in-the-works solo album, which McCoy wants you to know is no longer called The Lazarus Project, for legal reasons … involving Paul Walker. “Unfortunately we had to change the title to just Lazarus, because there’s already this movie out there called ‘The Lazarus Project,’ ” he explained. “So we’re just calling the record Lazarus now. It’s more to the point.” And all this talk of labels, nicknames and titles is sort of relevant to McCoy in general. Because ever since he burst onto the scene with Gym Class Heroes (McCoy and the band are currently at work on a new LP), people have struggled to slap a label on the charismatic frontman. Is he a rapper? A rock star? Something in between? Certainly GCH’s hip-hop leaning 2008 album The Quilt didn’t help matters any and now, with Lazarus on the horizon (it’s tentatively due in June), McCoy is facing another round of critical labeling. And yes, it’s a bit annoying. “It’s hard to put a stamp on the record. With anything I do, it’s hard to categorize it. With any project, I just go in and blindly start writing songs and then find out which way we want to go with it. This one took a bit longer to find the lane,” he said. “It was a year in the making. … We thought we had found the lane, then I started doing other sh–. Now that it’s done and I’ve listened to it a bunch of times, I’ll say that it’s got a pop appeal … the songs will appeal to a broader range of people as opposed to the hip-hop crowd or conventional GCH crowd.” Initially, the songs on Lazarus reflected the dark times in McCoy’s life … inspired mainly by his breakup with longtime girlfriend Katy Perry . But in the months following the split, he said he found a new outlook on life. And the new songs he wrote reflected that shift. “A lot of the music started off pretty dark and introspective, but now a lot of the records are happy. I stopped being so bitter about my life and situations,” McCoy said. “I hate going back to this, but I went through a sh—y breakup, so a lot of records were bitter in the beginning. Sad and mad about sh–, but then I found a median with myself. I realized I don’t have it that bad, so I figured, why dampen the mood with sad, sh—y records?” And on Monday (March 8) fans can get an official taste of what Lazarus will offer, when the first single — a song called “Billionaire” — premieres on MTV.com. But don’t let the title fool you: This isn’t your average, run-of-the-mill song about Benjamins. ” ‘Billionaire’ is basically about, you know, like ‘Brewster’s Millions.’ It’s me talking about what would happen if I would somehow manage to become a billionaire. What would I do with the money?” he explained. “Don’t get it wrong, I’m far from a billionaire. I think I just made it out the ‘thousandaire’ category. So it’s about what I would do with the money and, the same time, it opens up the question, if you were in a position to do something with a decent chunk of money, what would you do?” And that’s sort of the balance McCoy is striking on Lazarus — a little bit of the serious, a little bit of the social, but, of course, a whole lot fun, too. That’s the point of making songs like this, no matter how you choose to label them. “I’ve always wanted this album to come out in the summer, because that’s when most of the memorable music drops,” he said. “You want music to have a good time to, music to connect to. You wanna play it at the party.”
