Death Cab For Cutie Strive ‘To Make Music We Enjoy’ On New Album

Frontman Ben Gibbard says band’s only motivation these days is to have fun. By James Montgomery Death Cab for Cutie Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images The last time MTV News spoke to Death Cab for Cutie about the status of their new album, guitarist/producer Chris Walla said things were still in the “scratchy, unfinished demos” stage but that the music was already looking to split the difference between the live-and-loose Narrow Stairs and the more polished Plans. So, when we got DCFC frontman Ben Gibbard on the phone last week — to discuss his love of all things Seattle Mariner-y — we asked him for an update on the project. From the sound of things, the focus has sharpened considerably. “We’re going in the studio in June to start working on the record,” Gibbard told MTV News. “We’re going to be recording through the summer and into the fall, and all things being equal, we’re probably looking for a spring 2011 release.” Echoing Walla’s earlier sentiments, Gibbard said that the new Death Cab tunes do seem to be gleaned from a live setting or just a jam session in a room full of friends. “We all live in different cities now, but I strangely feel closer to my bandmates than I ever have before, and I think that as we move forward as a band, our only motivation is to make music that we enjoy, and to make music because it’s fun,” Gibbard said. “All of the accolades that we once hoped for — that we were striving for that were directly outside of the creative process — we’ve met almost all of those goals. So now, for us, it’s more of, ‘Oh, you know, I love hanging out with Chris and Nick and Jason, and talking about music and playing guitar.’ It’s just fun. We’re only doing it because we enjoy it.” And in keeping with that vibe, some of Gibbard’s early favorites for the album came from an informal e-mail he got from Walla that contained a couple of demos the guitarist had been working on purely on a whim. “We’ve had a couple of songs where Chris has sent me music, and I’ve done some arrangements and lyrics and melodies on them, and in the batch of material we’ve got sitting in the coffer ready to go on the record, that to me is the most exciting stuff,” he said. “They were a couple of tunes that he sent me that I’ve kind of finished, I’m really excited about.” More than a decade into their career, with both a platinum-selling album ( Plans ) and a #1 debut ( Narrow Stairs ) under their belts, Death Cab finally feel like they’ve reached a place where they can make the kind of music they want to, without worrying about impressing anyone other than themselves. And that appears to be the driving force behind the new album: complete, hard-won artistic freedom. “I’d like to think a lot of inspiration comes from that being the motivation, rather than, ‘Oh, this is our major-label record, we’ve got to do it great, or else people are going to say this,’ ” Gibbard said. “All those things you never talk about, but they’re all in your mind. So for us now, going into this next record, we’ll assess our accomplishments after we’re done making them, and … I feel like we have a lot more records to make. “We’ve all kind of landed in a place in our lives, personally and professionally, where we can all get together and enjoy each other’s company and enjoy making music,” he reiterated. “I certainly feel a lot more confident as a songwriter and a musician, and confident in the ability of my bandmates to make things that we’d want to listen to ourselves.” What is your favorite Death Cab for Cutie song? Usher, Beyonce Collaborator Rico Love Talks ‘Organic’ Songwriting Process

‘I don’t write anything down,’ Love says. By Shaheem Reid Rico Love Photo: MTV News Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native Rico Love came full circle when he got a chance to work with Usher on the singer’s Raymond v. Raymond LP — Rico was signed to Usher’s US Records as a rapper around five years ago. While waiting to release his debut album, Rico showed Ush his other talent — penning R&B songs, which led to him writing one of the premier cuts on Confessions, “Throwback.” Rico started working on his own rap album with producers such as Cool & Dre befored Usher pulled the plug. “I was working on the record, and in the middle of the record Usher decided he wanted to take a step back from the label. He had a lot going on. We understood that. I was left on J. Records and I decided I wasn’t getting a lot of love in the building. I love J. Records, but I don’t think they was recognizing me. So I kind of moved out the building and moved out to L.A. and started focusing on the songwriting. You know me — I just hustled until I got out there and put my money where my mouth was.” Rico’s songwriting breakthrough came in 2008 when he penned “Love Like This” for Natasha Bedingfield’s Pocket of Sunshine album. Through Bedingfield, Love connected with producer Jim Jonsin and moved to Miami. After changing managment, good things started to happen. He was soon working with Pleasure P on The Introduction of Marcus Cooper album and out of those sessions came the Grammy-nominated single “Boyfriend #2.” Work for Jamie Foxx and Beyonc

Asteroids, Space Invaders Records Beaten

It’s a bad week for old-timey game record holders — the long-standing world record in the game Asteroids was destroyed on Monday night. Back in 1982, Scott Safran scored 41,336,440 points in Asteroids , and his record stood until Monday night when Seattle locksmith John McAllister scored 41,338,740 points on the arcade version of the game. It was a squeaker, but enough to the record to change hands. Unlike a three hour Donkey Kong kill-screen game, Asteroids records are all about endurance; it took McAllister 58 bleary-eyed hours to beat the high score, and he did it all without the aid of feathered hair or acid wash jeans. According to McAllister, “The toughest part was this morning at three o’clock, six o’clock and nine o’ clock. Three o’clock I got through pretty well; at 6 o’clock, it was a struggled, and at 9 o’clock I felt like my eyes closed a few times.” The machine McAllister was using was a vintage 1979 Asteroids machine, and it’s amazing enough that it still works. Oh, and because it’s important, McAllister signed his towering high score with the intials

David Guetta Works With ‘Exciting Artist’ Afrojack On ‘Louder Than Words’

‘He’s a fantastic producer,’ Guetta says of the phenom. By Adam Stewart and Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images The dance-music world has a new, towering figure: At over 6 feet tall, Afrojack stands above many of his fellow house-music DJ/producers not just physically, but also in sheer production skill. “Afrojack is really killing it at the moment — any number of his tunes can be a huge tune,” Calvin Harris told MTV News recently. “I feel like Afrojack is one of the most important people to come along in a while,” house-music legend Tommie Sunshine said. “I mean, he’s just introduced this whole new sonic palette to the whole spectrum of music!” From Lil Jon to Ti

Drake Talks ‘Miss Me,’ His Thank Me Later Collabo With Lil Wayne

Young Money MC also clarifies the status of the ‘Afrika Bambaataa’ track to Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes and Sway Calloway Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive The plot thickens when it comes to the record “Afrika Bambaataa.” Weeks ago, before he went to prison, Wayne revealed on his “Nino Brown: The Road To Rikers” DVD that he was shooting a video to a song called “Afrika Bambaataa” for Drake. Everyone speculated that the song in question would be part of Weezy’s contribution to Drizzy’s Thank Me Later album. On Monday in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, before the start of his Away From Home Tour , Drake told us “Afrika Bambaataa” isn’t his record. “That’s actually a Lil Wayne song,” he explained. “I don’t know where that confusion came from. I was just on set that day when he was shooting that video. That’s not even my song. I’m not even on it, to be honest with you. Me and Wayne have a song on my album — a song called ‘Miss Me.’ “It’s a pretty straightforward [song],” he continued. “It’s a song about being away from what you love and hoping that when you’re gone, doing you, somebody out there misses you. It goes for Wayne in his situation and it goes for me in my situation, ’cause I’m on the road for I don’t how long right now.” Drake also revealed that he redid the chorus for Wayne’s song “Single” off of the No Ceilings mixtape. Fabolous Says Exchange Of Twitter Quips With Jim Jones Isn’t Serious

‘The point I’m in, I’m focusing on career,’ Fab tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes and Tim Kash Fabolous Photo: Def Jam The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive According to Fabolous, the back-and-forth he had with fellow New York heavyweight Jim Jones recently on Twitter was no big deal — just jokes. It’s not going to lead into any dis records. The same day Fab’s “Body Ya” video hit the Internet, Jones tweeted about MCs he felt were biting his style. “I just seen another rapper’s video that look just like my chain gang n scarf,” Jones wrote. “Damn, I’m sonnin these n—-az. I guess my style might body ya. Lol.'” Loso came back on his Twitter page with more comedy, poking fun at Jones’ mixtape The Ghost of Rich Porter. “#iJustWannaKnoWhy the competition won’t stay #Dead,” he wrote. “Maybe I should [release] a new mixtape call #TiNc3 — Ghost of the Competition.” “#iJustWannaKnoWhy ni–as think they invented Louis Vuitton??” Fab wrote later. “#nowplaying — ‘You’re Only a Customer’ by Jay Z.” Jones came back with, “Can I at least get a thank u for gettin ur Twitter acct poppin? Lol. I’m out. I quit. I quit. Pow pow, play dead. Lol.” Fab spoke with us on Wednesday about the situation. He says he doesn’t see things escalating. “I don’t know where his comment came from,” Fab said. “I joked around with it too. It was kinda subliminal. “I think it’s definitely competition,” Fab added. “But you can say things — it gets taken out of context whether you meant it as a joke or not. It could have been his opinion, but it still was thrown the way he threw it. It could have been taken in the context of you taking a shot at somebody. But I had fun with it, I made some jokes. That’s it. I’m not looking at it as I got a really big problem or East Coast/West Coast beef. I cracked a couple of jokes about it. I’m not making a dis record about it. The point I’m in, I’m focusing on career. I’m branded as an artist. I’m almost 10 years in the game. Twitter dissing isn’t important. My last mixtape states where I’m at — there is no competition. That’s on Twitter as well.” Fab’s “Body Ya” — in which he kills everyone he comes in contact with just by being in the same vicinity — is just one of many visuals coming from his mixtape The Funeral Service: There Is No Competition 2. “I just shot ‘I’m Raw.’ Since we were talking about ‘raw,’ we went to a meat house in Brooklyn,” the BK native explained. “It’s also a story line, same as ‘Body Ya.’ The story line starts off with me working in a meat market. Definitely a great video. It’s a great visual for a project that was a mixtape project. I wanted to expand it a little more.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Lil Wayne, Jae Millz, Notorious B.I.G.
