‘New Girl,’ ‘Revenge’ Sneak In Golden Globe TV Nods

‘American Horror Story’ is another new show that received surprise nominations. By Jocelyn Vena Zooey Deschanel in “The New Girl” Photo: FOX Sure, “30 Rock,” “Modern Family” and “Glee” all received Golden Globe nominations on Thursday (December 15), but a bunch of brand-new shows also find themselves up for statues at the broadcast. “New Girl,” “American Horror Story” and even America’s newest guilty pleasure, “Revenge,” all nabbed some kind of nod. The Comedy/ Musical Series nomination for Fox’s Zooey Deschanel vehicle “New Girl” is a bit of a surprise. The rookie sitcom follows Actress – Comedy nominee Deschanel as she plays a recently heartbroken schoolteacher who moves in with three single guys. From there, wackiness ensues. A win for Deschanel (who goes up against heavy-hitters like Tina Fey, Laura Linney and Amy Poehler) would bring some fresh blood to the broadcast. While it’s commendable that new shows are getting recognized, it’s surprising that Poehler managed to earn a nomination for her turn as Leslie Knope but that “Parks and Recreation” wasn’t nominated in the Comedy/ Musical Series category. Living on the polar opposite spectrum, FX’s creepy, soapy “American Horror Story” is an unexpected contender in the Drama Series category. The show is a frightening look at relationships and suburbia, where sometimes the decisions made by the living turn out to be more frightening than the things that go bump in the night. Jessica Lange is up for Supporting Actress. Can the show beat out a show like “Boardwalk Empire” or “Game of Thrones”? Probably not, but it’s nice recognition for one of TV’s most compelling new series. If anything, Lange’s portrayal of L.A.’s nosiest neighbor, Constance, deserves some love. Madeleine Stowe probably won’t take home a trophy for her portrayal of the lovably evil Victoria Grayson on “Revenge” in the Best Actress – Television Series Drama category, but her nomination comes as a delightful acknowledgement of that show’s undeniable ability to keep viewers entertained week after week as they tune in to see what happens to the Hamptons’ richest and most powerful. The most predictable nods, perhaps, go to critical favorites and awards-show darlings like “30 Rock,” “Mildred Pierce,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Modern Family.” But what does come as a surprise is the fact that “Breaking Bad” was snubbed in the Drama Series category, given the show’s critical praise and fan fervor. Hosted by Ricky Gervais for the third straight time, the Golden Globe Awards will air on Sunday, January 15, on NBC. ‘Three Stooges’ Trailer Delivers Slapstick And Snooki

Farrelly brothers bring the Stooges into present day but leave their classic comedy style intact. By Kara Warner Will Sasso, Chris Diamantopoulos and Sean Hayes in “The Three Stooges” Photo: 20th Century Fox The Farrelly brothers have finally unleashed the first trailer for their “Three Stooges” movie, and if you’re a fan of Larry, Moe and Curly’s classic slapstick, consider it an early Christmas gift. The nearly two-minute spot opens at the Sisters of Mercy Orphanage, where a burlap sack containing the baby Stooges is dropped at the doorstep, complete with the first eye-poke gag. The rest of the trailer features a smorgasbord of classic “Three Stooges” quotes, gags and slapstick, with a couple of modern twists thrown in. There’s the familiar “spread out!” shout when the boys prep for a fight, Curly’s panting and dog barks when he spots a beautiful woman (one of whom is played by “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara) and their “Mind your P’s and Q’s” gag. There are lobsters stuck to faces and dropped in pants, plus countless objects thrown at our main characters. In one scene, the guys are introduced to the iPhone, which Curly puts up to his eye to try and blink-talk with someone. The final shot of the trailer features some very familiar faces: JWoww and Snooki from our very own “Jersey Shore.” “Hiya, Snook, I gotcha a present,” Larry says, holding out a cardboard box to an unsuspecting Snooki. “Go on, open it.” Snooki opens the top and a hand jumps out and pokes her in the eye. “Owww!” she yells, and the trailer fades to black. After years of false starts and attempts to reboot the classic eye-poking, head-bonking comedy franchise with stars such as Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and Jim Carrey , the movie now is being headlined by the trio of Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamontopoulos. Although the film is not yet rated, when MTV News caught up with the Farrellys earlier this year, they promised to keep things PG. “The Stooges, by the way, are just naturally and organically PG,” Peter Farrelly said. “That’s what it is. We wouldn’t want it to be what it isn’t. It’s like ‘Napoleon Dynamite,’ as funny as that was, that was a PG movie, not PG-13. It’s just natural, and this is what the Stooges is. “They are Moe, Larry, Curly as you remember them,” he added when asked if the co-directors had plans to modernize the characters at all. “It’s not a biopic. It’s the episodes just as you saw but we rewrote, we have all new episodes. We have three episodes. Technically, each episode picks up where the last one left off. Each one begins with its own theme, so it’s about an hour and 25 minutes. Three episodes, fun, old-fashioned, but it takes place present-day, and they look, dress and sound like the Three Stooges.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Three Stooges.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Patricia Clarkson Talks Tammy One’s Scary ‘Parks And Rec’ Arrival

Ron Swanson’s cold-hearted ex-wife is #29 on MTV News’ Top 50 TV characters. By Jocelyn Vena Patricia Clarkson as Tammy One on “Parks and Recreation” Photo: NBC Before Patricia Clarkson ‘s arrival on “Parks and Recreation,” fans could only imagine what Ron Swanson’s chilling, manipulative ex-wife was like. The mere thought of Tammy One returning sends Ron running for cover. But over a two-episode arc, Clarkson perfectly embodied the role of Tammy One, giving a cold-hearted face to the show’s most-feared character. Tammy One’s arrival in Pawnee, Indiana, was bone-chilling and left fans crossing their fingers that Swanson would get out alive. That memorable introduction also helped her to place a solid #29 on MTV News’ list of Top 2011 TV Characters . We got on the phone with Clarkson on Tuesday, and she opened up about getting the chance to play the scariest woman in the “Parks and Rec” universe. MTV : What was your reaction when you first read this character? She’s the only person that seems to really get under Ron Swanson’s skin. It takes a lot to get under his skin. Jimmy Fallon, one Pretty Little Liar and more also make our TV Top 50! Patricia Clarkson : Oh, yes it does! Well when I first read it I thought, “Oh my.” You know I’m friends with Nick [Offerman] and Megan [Mullally] and they came to me urging me. And I thought, “Why do you think I’m this [character]? … First of all, let’s deal with that.” You know, I’m quite goofy, but I like doing characters that are a little bit of a stretch for me, and I do have a frightening aspect, and I think we all do as people. I think we can all summon the devils and the demons when we want. I am so thrilled I did this. MTV : We had heard a lot about Ron Swanson’s various Tammys, and you sort of embodied everything “Parks and Rec” fans had wanted to see for so long. Clarkson : The lore that this character carries, the backstory — that was also intimidating, very intimidating to walk into that situation. That also was what made me hesitant, but then I said, “What the hell?” It was beautifully written and funny and perfectly etched. And I do really believe that this is one of the greatest shows ever. I do think it’s an indelible cast of characters. It’s just a superb show. MTV : Are we going to see, maybe, the Tammys teaming up at all? Clarkson : We’re in the dark. Will Megan and I square off? … Will we all come back and have a weenie roast? I don’t know. First of all, the ceiling would have to be quite high, literally and figuratively. MTV : Have you heard if you’ll be back at all? Clarkson : I don’t know. I think they want the element of surprise, whether she does or doesn’t. It’s up to the writers and what they have in store for this season. We’ll see; it would be a blast. MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV’s Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage. Related Photos Best TV Characters 2011

Rashida Jones Tells Playboy Her Exhibitionist Fantasies

…So why won’t she strip down on screen again? Parks and Recreation ‘s Rashida Jones is (sk)interviewed in the new issue of Playboy magazine, where she admits that while she’s usually the type of gal to stay home and play board games on a Friday night, she secretly dreams of something much wilder: “Streaking through a large crowd has always been a secret fantasy of mine. Disneyland would be fun. Or maybe just showing up at the Apple Store naked and picking up an iPod shuffle and pretending nothing was wrong or different,” she says. Well, that would be different for this normally skingy celeb, but there wouldn’t be a thing wrong with it. Here’s an idea, Rashida- how’s about for starters, you get naked in front of a film crew? Until then, we’ll be waiting at the Apple store. Members can see more from sexy sitcom star Rashida Jones right here at MrSkin.com

ChitChatter: Rashida Jones Talks Busting SuperSoakers With Michael Jackson And Her Future In Politics With Playboy

Hollyweird banger and celebrity seed Rashida Jones did an interview with Playboy where she talks about being a nerd, making her famous parents proud and recounts some funny stories from kicking it with Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra. Check out a few of our favorite moments from the interview below: Rashida talks being a nerd instead of Hollyweird royalty: Q1 PLAYBOY: You star on Parks and Recreation and have roles in three movies this year, including this season’s The Big Year. And didn’t you go to Harvard? We’re all slackers by comparison, you realize. JONES: It’s just who I am, I guess. I came out of the womb reading books and thinking about my next project. I’m a born nerd. There’s also this thing of wanting to make your parents proud. Q2 PLAYBOY: But with parents like Quincy Jones and actress Peggy Lipton, shouldn’t you be lounging around your pool all day? JONES: Look, I have parents who have accomplished so much. I have a father who came from nothing and conquered the world. The last thing I’m going to do is sit here and spend his money and try to look pretty. That’s not interesting to me at all. I’ve been acting professionally for 15 years, and I’ve had to prove myself. Someone may think, Oh, everything was handed to her, but it doesn’t really work that way. The nice thing about comedy in particular is that it’s a meritocracy. Funny people aren’t going to have you around because you know other people. You have to make people laugh. Q10 PLAYBOY: You seem so wholesome. Were you ever really bad? JONES: Well, in high school I never drank, I never smoked, I never smoked weed. I was president of the varsity club and was on the math team and then student government. I was in every activity. I saved all the bad stuff for college. Q11 PLAYBOY: Give us one image, please . JONES: Okay. Picture me with eight gay dudes, all of us wearing matching BVDs and sparkles on our faces, with glow sticks and pacifiers and backpacks and skater jeans, at an all-night rave, out of our minds somewhere in Rhode Island until eight a.m. Mostly, though, college was me trying to look cooler than I was. There were definitely some Carhartt jeans and backward Kangol caps in my repertoire. Carhartt’s and Kangols? And we thought Rashida was out of touch with her black side. We gotta give her props for doing her own thing and not living off Mom and Dad too. Keep reading for Rashida’s answers about her love life and thoughts on marriage.

Jane Lynch Focuses On The Funny As Emmys Host

Highlights of the ‘Glee’ star’s hosting gig include big opening number and ‘Entourage’-skewering joke. By John Mitchell Jane Lynch hosts the 2011 Emmys Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Jane Lynch opened the 63rd Emmy Awards with an elaborate musical number that took her on a journey into the some of the biggest shows on television. The “Glee” scene-stealer kicked off the pre-taped piece by meeting with the “President of Television,” played gamely by “Star Trek” icon Leonard Nimoy. All of television secretly lives in one building, Nimoy explained, and Lynch decided to take a trip through several shows, including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Parks and Recreation” while singing and dancing alongside stars like “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson, Andy Richter, Eric Dane and many more. “But they hardly let you sing on ‘Glee,’ ” Nimoy joked. Lynch assured him she’d be lip-synching. A highlight of the number was her visit to the world of “Mad Men,” during which she informed the stars of the swinging ’60s drama of some major changes ahead and even hit on Elisabeth Moss’ character Peggy with a winking promise of same-sex marriage. The love-fest ended fast, however, when she let it slip in front of ad man Don Draper that in the future, people often fast-forward through commercials. Lynch’s Sue Sylvester even found herself on the receiving end of a slushy, something her “Glee” villain is more accustomed to dishing out than taking, before hitting the stage live accompanied by dancers. “Try doing that in triple Spanx,” she deadpanned. Her monologue was brief, just a few nods to the likes of Jon Hamm and “Boardwalk Empire” director Martin Scorsese, and one playful jab at TV legend Betty White, who Lynch joked was “the reason we start the show at 5 p.m.” She then introduced the Emmytones, a singing band of jokesters that included Zachary Levi, Cobie Smulders, Taraji P. Henson, Kate Flannery, Wilmer Valderrama and Joel McHale. Lynch brought her signature playful-but-occasionally biting humor to the gig, but never ventured into the more cutting territory that garnered Ricky Gervais controversy at this year’s Golden Globes — except perhaps for a slight dig at Gervais himself. After a edit-heavy, pre-taped segment featuring the British “Office” star, Lynch said, “Poor little Ricky Gervais. Someone didn’t get enough hugs from mommy and somehow it’s Hollywood’s fault.” Otherwise, the actress was all about keeping it funny. When Lynch lost to “Modern Family” star Julie Bowen in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category, she joked about the sad-sack things she’d be doing if she didn’t have to host the rest of the show and later referred to the ceremony as the ” ‘Modern Family’ Awards.” Lynch also set her playful sights on New Jersey for a faux news story on the state’s emergence as a force in television. Newsman Anderson Cooper introduced the investigative piece, with Lynch playing Donatella Albeghetti Mangiana D’Borgia, the woman behind the success of every Jersey-centric TV show, including “Jersey Shore.” We even got a little backstory on our favorite “Shore” stars and learned that D’Borgia plucked young Nicole Polizzi from obscurity as a Harvard undergrad to create the superstar we now know as “Snooki.” “Watch out, Hollywood, ’cause Jersey is taking over,” D’Borgia warned. (As if we didn’t know that already.) The hostess’ best line of the night came at the expense of the bro-heavy cast of “Entourage.” From the audience, Lynch introduced the guys, saying, “A lot of people are curious why I’m a lesbian. Ladies and gentlemen, the cast of ‘Entourage.’ ” Lynch closed the night simply, scolding viewers more interested in tweeting about the show than actually watching it and offering a sincere thank you as the credits rolled after “Modern Family” won Best Comedy Series. The Very Busy Chris Pratt on Preparing for Moneyball, Goofing in What’s Your Number? and Ten Year

Television watchers have been hip to Chris Pratt since he first appeared on The WB series Everwood in 2002. Other supporting roles in television ( The O.C. ) and film ( Bride Wars ) followed, but the Minnesota-born star really came into his own with his winning turn as Andy Dwyer, pratfaller extraordinaire-cum-romantic lead, on the beloved NBC series Parks & Recreation . Now, with three films coming out this fall, including two next month, Pratt is poised to tackle the big screen with a fervor his Parks & Rec alter ego would usually reserve for the Meat Tornado .
