Aziz Ansari Rates Golden Globes Host Ricky Gervais

‘It’s a tough job … I thought he was really funny,’ the MTV Movie Awards host said of Gervais’ emceeing performance on Sunday. By Kara Warner Aziz Ansari attends HBO’s 2011 Golden Globe Awards afterparty on Sunday Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais didn’t seem to pull any punches on Sunday during his second year emceeing the glamorous gathering of film and TV casts and crews. His opening monologue alone took shots at several of the biggest stars in attendance (“The Tourist” actors Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, to name two), and directed a few playful jabs at naughty absent ones (including Charlie Sheen). Still, no matter what you thought of Gervais’ performance, he did manage to keep the audience on the edge of their seat, since you never quite knew what outlandish comment was going to come out of his mouth next. Like when he introduced Bruce Willis as Ashton Kutcher’s dad, for example. MTV News caught up with another esteemed awards show host, Aziz Ansari , at the HBO’s Golden Globes afterparty, and we thought the comedian would be the perfect person to offer an opinion on Gervais’ jokes. “I thought he did a great job,” Ansari said. “Sometimes with these award shows it’s tough because the audiences are drinking and not really paying attention. It’s a tough job. I thought he did a great job. I thought he was really funny. I really enjoyed it.” We then brought up the fact that it’s lucky Ansari hosted the MTV Movie Awards, whose attendees are generally younger and not able to imbibe quite as heavily. “Yeah. Jaden Smith wasn’t doing tequila shots during the Movie Awards,” the “Parks and Recreation” star pointed out. So with the pool of people who’ve hosted awards show hosts not being a very large one, we asked Ansari if they have some special club or secret society. “Yeah, we hang out at TJ Maxx,” Ansari quipped. “Comedians are not cool. We don’t have anything cool, so we just go to TJ Maxx and drink from flasks and hang out.” Sounds like a party to us. We’ve got the Golden Globes covered! Stick with MTV News for photos, videos, fashion and up-to-the-minute details from the awards show. Katy Perry Lampoons ‘Sesame Street’ Flap On ‘Saturday Night Live’

Singer pokes fun at drama playing a developed teen in ‘Bronx Beat’ sketch. By Mawuse Ziegbe Katy Perry performs on ‘SNL’ Sept. 25 Photo: NBC The 36th season of “Saturday Night Live” kicked off by spotlighting a bunch of familiar faces, introducing some new ones and, of course, putting a comic stamp on the latest pop-culture controversies. The show’s signature opening monologue, this time delivered by “Parks and Recreation” star and “SNL” alum Amy Poehler, featured a trippy dream sequence in which the comedienne stressed about pulling off a successful host stint. The sketch was packed with blasts from the show’s past including Rachel Dratch, who gets hauled off by a polar bear, and ex-“Weekend Update” anchors Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon who show up to bully Poehler. “The Social Network” star Justin Timberlake pops up at one point to plant a kiss on Poehler and then blab about her sub-par smooching skills. Timberlake returns later to lampoon his recent Hollywood gigs in the sketch “Actor II Actor” with Andy Samberg, in which the funnyman bluntly asks the singer-turned-actor, “When you gonna make some more music?” Timberlake then flexed his acting chops by storming off in a faux rage. The show’s “Weekend Update” sketches also boasted highlights, including a dead-on impression of Will Smith by newcomer Jay Pharoah, replete with random shouts of “Woo!” as the comic touted the Smiths’ talented brood. Fred Armisen busted out his bumbling impersonation of embattled New York Governor David Paterson, ragging on upstate New York and dishing on current gubernatorial candidates, Andrew Cuomo and Carl Paladino. Then, the real Governor Paterson rolled behind the desk, taking jabs at Armisen’s impression and critiquing him for still rocking a beard. “I shaved that off a year ago, are you blind?” the sight-challenged politician quipped, before comparing “SNL” to Albany, saying, “There’s a lot of characters, it’s funny for 10 minutes [but] then you just want it to go away.” Katy Perry didn’t say much during her “SNL” cameo but she may have had one of the most memorable comedic turns of the night. The singer, who recently battled drama over a “Sesame Street” clip that was deemed too racy for the toddler set, bounded into a “Bronx Beat” sketch helmed by Poehler and fellow ex-castmember Maya Rudolph. Playing a bosomy teen named Maureen Dichico who’s been causing a lot of “hullabaloo” at the local library due to her blossoming figure, Perry fielded exclamations from the chatty duo like, “Honey, you’ve exploded! Kaboom!” The pair addressed Perry’s choice of attire — a low-cut t-shirt emblazoned with “Sesame Street” resident Elmo — with barbs like, “Look at Elmo, his head’s all stretched out!” Later, the ladies quip “Who cares if kids are looking at boobs? Boobs feed babies,” a wink at the controversy, which sparked whoops from the audience. Perry also hit the stage throughout the show, first rocking her summer jam “California Gurls.” Although she worked the Snoop Dogg-assisted smash solo, she made up for the Doggfather’s absence by tricking out the set with lots of pretend sweets and mounds of fake cotton candy. Clutching a bling-laden mic and sporting a snug, bon-bon-studded minidress, Perry vamped it up as dancers in pink bra tops and bewigged singers grooved behind her. She later returned for her single “Teenage Dream,” this time opting for a sexed-up schoolgirl outfit with a sequined tie, tight blouse and tiny tartan skit. Perry began the performance with some a cappella belting and continued to display some powerhouse vocals as her back-up crew bobbed about in cheerleader and football-player outfits. As fog rolled across the stage and her band and dancers worked it in their campy high-school costumes, Perry ripped the final notes of the song and wrapped up the performance with a wink. Been curious about what the Wachowskis were planning for Cobalt Neutral 9 , their gay love story set during the Iraq War? Vulture reports that the film will revolve around “found footage” (think Cloverfield ) of an American soldier named Butch, his gay Iraqi lover and their assassination attempt against then-president George W. Bush. In addition to that hot button plot turn, the two lovers will also have “graphically described sex” while wearing burqas. Needless to say, the Wachowskis are reportedly considering self-financing this one. [ Vulture ]

Hundreds of dead crappies have risen to the surface, leaving a distinct aroma. | StarTribune.com

For several hundred crappies, the lake wasn't the place to be as August arrived. Handfuls of the small panfish turned up dead at Lake Harriet, bobbing to the surface and suffusing the air around the popular Minneapolis lake with a distinct fishy smell. “Just seeing the fish and smelling the fish wasn't a pleasant experience,” said Deb Franko of St. Paul, who walked around the lake with her husband, Aaron, on Saturday. Dawn Summers, spokeswoman for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, said the fish deaths might have been caused by lack of oxygen near the surface of Lake Harriet because of recent steamy weather and decomposing vegetation. However, there were no dead fish along the shores of Lake of the Isles Sunday. And the Frankos said that when they'd walked around neighboring Lake Calhoun on Saturday, they hadn't seen any dead fish. Lake chemistry differs from lake to lake, Summers noted. She added that group fish deaths happen every summer, and there is no indication that water quality in Minneapolis lakes has declined. Fish also commonly die in winter when ice cover limits oxygen. The only dead fish visible at Lake Harriet on Sunday were crappies, with the lake's many other and larger species apparently unaffected. Summers said workers will clean out the dead fish as soon as possible. Despite the bellying-up of the fish, Lake Harriet was busy with boaters, joggers, bicyclists and strolling families Sunday. Franko said the aroma wasn't enough to keep her and her husband from walking the lake — though she thought they might hesitate to return if the fish continued to surface. A woman reading a book on the west side of the lake Sunday afternoon didn't seem bothered in the least. “I have pretty bad allergies,” she noted. added by: toyotabedzrock

Drake ‘Good Morning America’ Concert Falls Through

Cast of Broadway’s ‘American Idiot’ will perform July 16 instead. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage Another Drake show in New York has been nixed before the rapper even got a chance to take the stage. Drizzy was in talks to play a free outdoor show July 16 as part of ABC’s “Good Morning America” summer concert series. However, the Drake show has been squashed and the cast of Broadway’s “American Idiot” will fill the upcoming slot instead. A spokesperson for ABC confirmed that a potential Drake show was in the works. “We were interested in having Drake perform, but he was never officially booked,” an ABC rep told MTV News. In addition, a spokesperson for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation told MTV News that concert organizers had simply decided to go with another act. “There was an open date on the calendar for July 16, but they decided to feature the cast of the Broadway show ‘American Idiot,’ ” a rep said. A rep for Drizzy also told the New York Daily News that there was a “booking in place” but did not offer any additional details. Reports have surfaced indicating that safety might have been a factor in passing on Drizzy for a “GMA” appearance. According to the Daily News, the New York City Police Department pulled the plug on the planned show after the city’s parks department failed to provide the security that the NYPD deemed necessary for such an event. The parks department spokesperson did not confirm whether security issues were a factor in not moving forward with the Drake show. The news comes in the wake of a Drake concert in NYC that was canceled June 15 when thousands of fans unexpectedly showed up. Drizzy was expected to perform a free show at New York’s South Street Seaport (pop group Hanson were also on the bill ), but the NYPD put the kibosh on the concert after roughly 10,000 fans swarmed the event. Days later, Jay-Z also ran into issues mounting a concert on top of the marquee of New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater for an appearance on the “Late Show With David Letterman.” City officials axed the surprise concert once fans got wind of the show beforehand. However, Jigga — joined by Eminem — ultimately finagled an outdoor appearance and performed on the building’s roof . The MCs didn’t need a permit to rock out on the roof since it is private property.
