Kelly Blazek, a Cleveland-based PR executive and authority on local communications jobs listings, was undone by the same thing that built her up: Social media. With her ego boosted by the position she cultivated via LinkedIn and other networks, she soon became an Internet villain at the hands of someone she shunned. The irony. Blazek, for a little more back story, produced and distributed a popular email that culled job openings from online job sites and from her own contacts. She worked for 10 years building her contacts and selecting the list of people who receive the email, limiting recipients largely to those with experience. Blazek also promoted herself and the email list on social media networking sites, such as LinkedIn, where she was connected to nearly 1,000 people she knows. She’s good at what she does, and she knows it. Eventually, that inflated sense of self-importance would come back to bite her as she bought into her own hype more than and service she was providing. She bragged in speeches that she had 7,300 people on her list, building a reputation so revered that many young people felt they HAD to reach out to her. But when many newbies asked for help, she turned them down. That wasn’t the problem or newsworthy … it was the brutal way Blazek rejected them. Blazek got noticed on the web after sending a nasty response to Diana Mekota, a John Carroll University graduate moving back to the Cleveland area. Mekota asked if she could join Blazek’s LinkedIn network and receive the job listings email she held so dear. Here’s how Blazek responded in an email: 13 Idiots Who Got Fired Because of Social Media Open Slideshow 1. @CarlyCrunkBear Her handle says it all. Olivia Sprauer Olivia Sprauer taught English at Martin County High School in Florida and modeled on the side under the name Victoria Valentine James. Her school didn’t think that side job was as cool as her male students did. “We have never met. We have never worked together. You are quite young and green on how business connections work with senior professionals.” “Apparently you have heard that I produce a Job Bank, and decided it would be stunningly helpful for your career prospects if I shared my 960+ LinkedIn connections with you.” To “a total stranger who has nothing to offer me”? Not happening. “Your invite to connect is inappropriate, beneficial only to you, and tacky,” the email continued. “Wow, I cannot wait to let every 25-year-old jobseeker mine my top-tier marketing connections to help them land a job. Love the sense of entitlement in your generation.” “And therefore I enjoy denying your invite, and giving you the dreaded ‘I Don’t Know’ [scribbled-out name] because it’s the truth,” she added, pouring it on. “Oh, and about your request to actually receive my Job Bank along with the 7,300 other subscribers? That’s denied, too. I suggest you join the other Job Bank in town.” “Oh wait – there isn’t one.” In response, Mekota did what many millennials do: She turned to the Internet for catharsis, posting Blazek’s response on reddit, imgur and on Facebook. The rest is history. The letter went viral, of course, because people can relate to the plight of Mekota and others like her, and Blazek’s email is so absurd it had to be shared. People on Reddit rally behind those like Mekota who get kicked when they’re down, and revel in the change to expose the Blazeks who have lost touch with reality. To her credit, she got the message, issuing an apology Tuesday that is contrite and pitch perfect. The most telling line of a seemingly sincere mea culpa: “In my harsh reply notes, I lost my perspective about how to help, and I also lost sight of kindness, which is why I started the Job Bank listings in the first place.” Lesson learned?
Hotel surveys. No one wants to fill them out, but few people dislike them as much as this customer, who was caught off guard when one was sent to his home. Caught with his pants down, you might say … so to speak: A Reddit user claimed that his friend works at a hotel and received this survey from an unhappy guest … although at least the accommodations got mostly 6/7s. The checkout process could’ve been more timely, however. If this is a joke on the hotel visitor’s part, then very well played. If not, then you have to give him credit for honesty … and wonder what his wife’s comments were. Think he’s as honest with her as he was with the hotel? No word on how the “service” he received in the actual room was worth the price, either. We’d love to see some of the boxes checked off in that survey.
A Boston-area man picked up a restaurant tab for a stranger he overheard tearfully discussing a medical diagnosis, and the waiter documented it on Reddit. “While waiting tables tonight, a mother and daughter started crying mid-meal,” wrote the server on the site, describing the heartwarming experience. “I had no idea what happened until a single guy at the table next to them handed me this note [seen below] with his bill. Faith in humanity, restored.” The waiter told the Huffington Post he couldn’t confirm the relationship between the two women, but he was fairly certain they were mother and daughter. After they ordered, the woman whom the waiter believes was the daughter took a phone call. Both women then started crying. Recounts the server: “The single guy sitting next to them had been friendly to me all evening, making jokes and such.” “When he was finished I gave him his check, and inside the billfold was his credit card and the note I took a picture of. I combined the 2 checks, and he paid for both.” “I waited until after he left to tell them their check had been taken care of. The mother was overwhelmed with gratitude, as was I. It was a great evening.” And now a great story to make you feel a little better about life. In a world where so much seems to go wrong, it’s good to know there are people like this.
Nadya Suleman is in deep this time … and we’re not talking about the Octomom porn . Welfare fraud investigators are on the cusp of seizing bank records and documents that may prove the mom of 14 has been stealing taxpayer money. Intentionally or not, such an act could land her in prison. Officials obtained a warrant to seize Nadya’s financial and employment records, believing that she earned far more than the welfare threshold in 2012. Astonishingly, she is still entitled to welfare benefits if she earns under $119,000 a year (14 kids and all). More astonishingly … she may have doubled that. The porno was a big seller, while her topless strip club gigs and payday loan endorsement deal also earned her some nice checks. She did well in ’12. Too well, officials believe, to be getting public assistance. The L.A. County Dept. of Welfare Fraud Prevention and Investigation (WFP&I) is zeroing in on the home and office of Nadya Suleman ‘s manager. There, they think they’ll find evidence that Nads earned upwards of $200K and defrauded the state by collecting welfare money on top of her earnings. Welfare fraud carries up to three years in prison, during which her kids would become wards of the state … which some might argue would be a step up.
Chalk another one up for Mila Kunis. After Maxim’s Hot 100 list surprisingly placed Miley Cyrus at #1, one Reddit user was beside himself, and thusly decided to take matters into his own hands. Daxl70 urged the Celebs subreddit to vote on its favorite leading ladies, and came up with his own ranking system. In the end, Mila Kunis came out on top. Each participating user had to post his own list of hottest women, numbered 1-10. The order mattered, with greater weight assigned to higher-ranked stars. After all the lists – which included 220 different women – were tabulated, Kunis won by a landslide, which isn’t too surprising given her recent list of accolades. After all, she was also named FHM’s ” Sexiest Woman in the World “, Esquire’s ” Sexiest Woman Alive ” and Details’ “Most F–kable Celebrity” … you get the idea. What do you think: Is Mila #1?! GOSH YES. Maybe not #1, but she’s hot! No way! Why are people so into this girl?! View Poll »
Paris Jackson was transferred to UCLA Medical Center Saturday night, effectively ending the 5150 psychiatric hold that began after her suicide attempt. That facility is the same one where her father, Michael Jackson, was pronounced dead four years ago this month following an acute Propofol overdose. As you’re likely aware by now, 15-year-old Jackson was rushed to the hospital early Wednesday after she allegedly cut her forearm with a meat cleaver. A purported Paris Jackson suicide note was found at the scene, though it’s unclear; the youngster is believed to have been battling major depression. She was placed under a 5150 psychiatric hold, effectively keeping her at a local hospital regardless of her condition or desire to leave, for 72 hours. That three-day period is now over, so the troubled teen was moved to UCLA Medical Center. TMZ photos showed Jackson being wheeled yesterday. No word on her status, though the mood of her security team suggested that Jackson may be doing better after what can only be called a tragic week. The Jackson family, of course, is no stranger to UCLA Medical Center, where Michael was taken after he went into cardiac arrest on June 25, 2009. That’s where he was pronounced dead, after Dr. Conrad Murray – who left Paris a bizarre pay phone “letter” this week – refused to call it at his home. As for the King of Pop’s daughter and her long-term prognosis, a custody judge has since ordered an investigation in a bid to ensure her well-being.
