Stat Quo Working With Dr. Dre On Detox, Readying Own Album

‘It’s definitely gonna come out,’ Atlanta MC says of Dre’s long-awaited opus. By Shaheem Reid Stat Quo Photo: MTV News Stat Quo says he doesn’t know exactly when, but Dr. Dre is definitely going to drop Detox. It’s not a myth. Stat has been writing on the project for several months. “It’s definitely gonna come out,” the Atlanta native said of Dre’s long-awaited project. “I always said it was gonna come out in 2010 light years ago. I also at one point thought it would never come out. Being around Dre and the energy that’s being created, all I can say is that it’s incredible. It’s totally left-field from what’s going on — I really appreciate what he’s doing as an artist. Even though from the outside looking in, if I’m other people, I’ll be like, ‘What’s taking him so long?’ But it’s gonna be worth every second, every hour, every minute. Every week, every year we waited for the album. “The songs I’ve heard since I’ve been around are all really special,” he continued. “It’s so important to hip-hop that this record comes. It’s our saving grace. A lot of the radio stations are going rhythmic and going away from certain types of urban music. You can only go to contemporary station to get certain soul-type music. The whole platform is changing. An album like his can bring a boost to the music that’s going on.” Well, at least we know that Dre is busy. Stat appears in Dr. Dre’s new Hewlett-Packard commercial — in the short, Dre is at the boards producing while Stat is in the vocal booth. Quo’s fans have been waiting for him to put out his debut almost as long as Dr. Dre’s followers have been anticipating Detox. Stat signed to Shady/Aftermath around the same time as 50 Cent, watching while 50 Cent put out an album and waited while G-Unit commandos Tony Yayo, Young Buck, Lloyd banks and Young Buck dropped. When he was finally on deck in 2007, plans for his LP were squelched once again. “When it was time to put a record out, the powers that be [at Interscope] that keeps the lights on at the company was like, ‘We need either a 50 Cent or a Dr. Dre or an Eminem record,” Stat tells. “So I had to make the decision: ‘OK, it’s time to leave.’ We parted on good terms. Initially when I first left, I was upset because I wanted to put my album out under that umbrella. At the end of the day, my relationships with Dre and Em is still intact and it’s all good.” Last year, Stat inked a deal with former G-Unit executive and producer Sha Money XL’s, Dream Big Ventures imprint. His album Statlanta is due in May. The first single is “Success” and on the ditty, Stat raps from the perspective of success being his girl. “For me, it’s a situation of, you start a journey,” he explained. “This album is my odyssey. It’s like I’m finally completing it and putting it out. People are like, ‘You been working on this album for seven years.’ I’ve made this album, like, four or five times. When I first signed to Shady/Aftermath, it had one particular vibe then I worked with Em, and the vibe changed. Then I worked with Dre and the vibe changed again. Then when I left Shady/Aftermath I made another album thinking I was gonna go to another major, the vibe was different at that point. When I hooked up with Sha and the Dream Big thing, the vibed changed again. This is the vibe you getting now. So Statlanta has been made seven, eight times. I got a bunch of old Statlanta s, but I have to make the music more relevant to what I have going on at this particular time. Times changed.” Stat says his LP will depict what’s going on in is life right now. “This album — I had to look at the game and what’s going on in music,” he offered. “It’s a lot of people complaining. I think too many artists are trying to fit into boxes and lanes that don’t fit their personalities. If you’re a 31-year-old male or female, you shouldn’t be rapping about what a 16-year-old male or female is going through — unless you’re trying to enlighten them on a perspective of ‘I’ve been where you’ve been.’ But ‘I’mma drop my booty low an make music they’re excited about,’ that’s not really your life. You look like the old dude in the club. That’s just not hot. This [album], I wrote it from a standpoint of what I was going through in my life and the struggles that not only I’ve been through, but the people around me have been going through.” Related Videos Stat Quo’s ‘Success’ Related Artists Stat Quo Dr. Dre

Taylor Swift Thinks Taylor Lautner Is Hot

Or so she says in an interview for April’s Elle, which may have happened before their breakup. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift on the April cover of Elle Photo: Elle Taylor Swift is on the cover of the April issue of Elle, and inside she reveals her thoughts on the hotness of her ex-boyfriend, “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner . But don’t get too excited by the possibility that this interview might lead to a romantic reunion — it appears to have been conducted before Swift and Lautner went their separate ways. The interview may have taken place in December 2009, when Swift was spotted wearing a hairstyle similar to one she’s sporting in the accompanying photos (bangs and all). In addition to talking about her fears and her lyrical inspirations, she sheepishly shared that her “Valentine’s Day” co-star was on her hot list. “Um, well … Taylor Lautner,” she said in response to a query about who she thought was hot. The two reportedly split up in late December. Swift has never been shy about using her relationships as lyrical inspiration . “I like to categorize the various levels of heartbreak,” she told Elle . “I’ve only had that happen once. A letdown is worth a few songs. A heartbreak is worth a few albums.” Swift, who kicked off the second leg of her Fearless tour on Thursday, also talked about her own level of fearlessness. “I overthink everything,” she explained. “I overanalyze everything.” Sometimes for Swift, though, all that thinking can lead to success. For instance, she claims that the power of positive thinking ultimately pushed her to move to Nashville, where she realized her musical ambitions. “I just got it into my head that there was this magical place that I needed to go to because that was where dreams come true,” she said. But it seems that as her star rises and her popularity grows, so does the scrutiny Swift faces from the public and the media. She said that these days, people are waiting to see if she’ll make a mistake. “I’ve had countless opportunities to do some really bad things,” she said. “And then people start combing through everything I do, trying to find the next mistake and misperception, which leads to more scrutiny. “Like, if I go to a bar, even if I’m not drinking, who’s to say that a source isn’t going to say that I was doing something I shouldn’t have been doing?” she went on. “So it’s not only about your own moral compass, but the moral compasses of other people that you don’t know.” Related Artists Taylor Swift

Sex and Relationship Advice From Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is a sexual being. Perhaps more so than most, considering those pesky hermaphrodite rumors . Whether she’s a woman and/or a man, she claims she’s not getting any lately. “I’m single because I don’t have the time,” she told a group of reporters at a M.A.C Cosmetics’ Viva Glam event in London. “You know what? That’s okay.” “Even Lady Gaga can be celibate.” So well spoken in the third-person. Guess Matthew Williams is out of luck. The singer goes on to offer words of wisdom to girls regarding sexual behavior. If only Bristol Palin had listened to this: “If you can’t get to know someone, then you probably shouldn’t be having sex with them,” she said. Want a piece of this? Too bad, Lady Gaga doesn’t have time . Words to live by. Lady Gaga continued, wisely encouraging young women to carry condoms and get frequent HIV tests, reiterating “You are not invincible.” She also discussed some of the downsides of intercourse for ladies. “Orgasms are the biggest obstacles for women. Sex should be fun, beautiful and colorful, but women get the short end of the stick. We’re just receivers.” “We can’t talk about sex, we can’t sing about sex.” Well, she disproved her own point there, but we get the drift. This concludes today’s lesson in Sex and Relationships 101 with the Fabulous Lady Gaga.

No One Gets Laid Anymore

There are a lot of married British ladies over 35 out there who never have sex— and it’s their husbands’ fault . But it’s not just married British ladies with this problem. Women everywhere have a fucking problem. The widespread, but apparently mistaken, notion is that women are the ones who are “too tired” or “have a headache.” But according to this study quoted in the Daily News , it’s the dudes who aren’t in the mood. This was borne out in conversations with several ladyfriends of mine. “Our sex life was great for the first year,” says a 29-year-old editor I’ll call Liane. “Then we started doing it less and less, and I was always the one initiating.” Liane and her boyfriend have been living together for a year and a half, and co-habitation has just made things worse. “Now it’s like we’re roommates, not lovers. He’s really affectionate, but we hardly ever have actual penis-in-vagina sex . I’m dying here.” One wonders, of course, why Liane and her boyfriend do not simply break up. “That would seem to be the logical thing to do, wouldn’t it?” she says. “I do love him, though. I don’t really know what to do. If I suspected he was cheating, it would be easier to break up with him.” And indeed, cheating is often the cause of the loss of interest! (Or a weird gain in interest.) A 30-year-old blogger I’ll call Jill had been dating her boyfriend for almost a year and a half when he lost nearly all interest in sex. “And this was after he used to BEG ME to have sex all the time,” she says. “He had effectively emotionally ‘pulled out’ of the relationship and so was no longer interested in doing it.” Jill tried to talk to him about it, she says, but he would brush her off, saying he was “too stressed out.” But in reality, he had moved to a new city “and realized he could have terrible sex with dozens of girls instead of just me,” she says. And she cautions: “Don’t ever believe them when they say they’re too stressed out for sex. He just doesn’t want to do it with you anymore.” A 32-year-old woman I’ll call Katherine, who lives in Park Slope, says she realized early on in her relationship with her now-ex-husband that she had a higher sex drive than he did—but it wasn’t an issue until a couple years into their relationship, when it went way down. “When we talked about it, it felt so weird and Twilight Zone-y,” Katherine says. “I am a woman! You are a man! How come i want it and you don’t? But he maintained throughout that he doesn’t have that high a drive.” The Daily News blamed a number of factors: the rise in Internet pornography, the recession, performance anxiety. Is this what happens in life, to everyone? It’s all too depressing to even contemplate. [Photo via Flickr/peterkellystudios ]

False Report: Oprah Winfrey to Address Lesbian Rumors in New Book

We can at least say this about The National Enquirer : it’s one tabloid NOT making up rumors about a Brangelina break-up . But the publication is teasing a false story in its latest issue, as it claims Oprah Winfrey is on the verge of publishing a memoir that will “finally reveal the truth about her relationships with longtime companion Stedman Graham and best friend Gayle King.” Late last year, the newspaper claimed Oprah would dump Stedman and move in with King. Shockingly, that never took place.

‘Weird New Way to Flirt’ Involves Evoking the Oldest Double Standard in the Book

The other day, a 25-year-old woman I know mentioned that “a weird new way for guys to flirt is for them to be inquisitive and ask about the girl’s sexual experiences.” Ew! This is a thing that is still happening ? Used to be, everyone knew that talking about your sexual history on the first date—or the first meeting—was taboo. (Note: I am talking about straight people here; I cannot pretend to understand the dating and mating rituals of the gays.) There’s a reason for that
