Resident Evil 5’s Undead Will Ride Motorcycles and Shoot Guns

Deep thought of the day: They say if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. But if an undead creature rides motorbikes and shoots guns, is it still a zombie? If you’re Paul W.S. Anderson pulling together Resident Evil 5 , the latest in your megahit zombie franchise, the answer seems to be yes.

‘Resident Evil’ Enjoys Solid ‘Afterlife’ At The Box Office

Fourth entry in video game franchise takes top prize during quiet box-office weekend. By Josh Wigler Milla Jovovich in “Resident Evil: Afterlife” Photo: Sony Pictures The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Resident Evil: Afterlife” ($27.7 million) #2 “Takers” ($6.1 million) #3 “The American” ($5.9 million) #4 “Machete” ($4.2 million) #5 “Going the Distance” ($3.8 million) If there’s one thing that zombies enjoy more than brains, it’s money. And the flesh-eating monsters of “Resident Evil: Afterlife” got a whole lot of both as the only new wide release to hit theaters this past weekend. Director Paul W.S. Anderson and actress Milla Jovovich’s fourth entry in the popular video game franchise proved that the series still has plenty of life in it with a first-place finish worth $27.7 million. “Afterlife” played on an estimated 4,700 screens at 3,203 locations, with just over 2,000 of those venues showing off the movie’s well-received 3-D capabilities and 141 in IMAX 3-D. Not only did “Afterlife” top the domestic box office, but it also managed to dethrone “Inception” overseas with $46.2 million earned from foreign markets. The success of “Afterlife” all but guarantees that the “Resident Evil” franchise will soldier on. Indeed, Jovovich informed New York magazine that a fifth film will “definitely” be made, with plans to solicit story ideas from fans. “We’ve been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it’s probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see,” she said. “It’s going to be a more interactive process.” Beyond “Afterlife,” it was a fairly bleak weekend at the box office. “Takers” continued to perform well in its third weekend, while both “The American” and “Machete” suffered significant drops of more than 50 percent in their second weekend frames. “Going the Distance” rounded out the top five with $3.8 million. Upcoming Releases Next weekend, Ben Affleck invites moviegoers to visit “The Town,” while M. Night Shyamalan puts the fear of the “Devil” inside of an elevator. Animated comedy “Alpha and Omega” and the Emma Stone-starring romantic comedy “Easy A” round out the weekend’s newcomers. Ali Larter Did Not Have A ‘Jersey Shore’ Youth

The ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ star, a Jersey native, does like to wind down with the show. By Kara Warner Ali Larter Photo: MTV News “Resident Evil: Afterlife” star Ali Larter started her entertainment career as a Ford model and has gone on to appear in many films and television shows. (You may remember the whipped-cream bikini she sported in “Varsity Blues.”) Larter hails from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, so we had to ask if the former “Heroes” star was familiar with MTV’s current reality-TV darling “Jersey Shore.” “I watched three episodes last night,” Larter admitted with a smile. “I think that ‘Jersey Shore,’ they just cast it so well, but [many of the cast members are] really from New York,” she emphasized. “So they’re not really from New Jersey. I’m also from South Jersey, that’s like Margate, Stone Harbor — there’s a touch of Wildwood, where you might see some guidos hanging around,” she said. While she noted that the area where she grew up is not at all like Seaside Heights, she told MTV News that she has had a bit of experience with the “Jersey Shore” archetype. “I definitely, in my day, dated a guy named Maggidio who had a red IROC [an edition of Chevrolet’s Camaro that was produced between 1985 and 1992]. So I had my moment with the guidos,” she recalled. “But that’s not really [indicative of] the Jersey shore — that’s a personality type of someone who really plays up that role.” Regardless, Larter is still a fan of the show. “The casting is so unbelievable. It’s funny and it’s really unbelievable,” she said. “It’s astonishing, some of the things that come out of their mouth.” Larter added that the merry band of tanned, toned and often intoxicated misfits often makes for excellent entertainment. “Nothin’ like a dish of chicken piccata and a little ‘Jersey Shore,’ ” she said. ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ Stars On Their Weapons Of Choice

‘In this movie, I have a lot more guns,’ Milla Jovovich says. By Kara Warner Milla Jovovich Photo: MTV News While much has been made of the current pop-culture obsession with vampires, there has been an equally fervent fixation on zombies (e.g., “Zombieland,” “28 Days Later,” “30 Days of Night,” AMC’s upcoming “The Walking Dead”), and this week marks the release of the fourth “Resident Evil” film. In this latest installment, “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” the story picks up roughly six months after “Resident Evil: Extinction.” Alice (Milla Jovovich) is desperately searching for survivors — first near a small town in Alaska, where she finds Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), and then in desolate, undead-ridden Los Angeles. Despite being the fourth film in the franchise, “Afterlife” contains a couple of notable firsts: the appearance of Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller) and an Alice vs. Albert Wesker fight sequence. Speaking of fighting, when we caught up with the film’s two leading ladies recently, we asked them to share their preferred method/weaponry for eliminating zombies. “I like to get in there,” Jovovich said. “In ‘Resident Evil 3,’ I had my cookeries. I like the hacking, chopping bit. It’s nice to hit some flesh and bone and [hear the] crack. It made me feel really strong and powerful,” she revealed. “In this movie, I have a lot more guns, that was fun too.” Jovovich went on to compare the shooting of machine guns to playing guitar. “I never realized shooting guns is a lot like playing guitar — you need calluses for it,” she said. “After a day of shooting machine guns, I got blisters on my fingers. It’s like, ‘Oh, I need to practice a bit more and get those calluses going,” she said. “But thank god I don’t have to shoot machine guns every day.” Co-star Ali Larter agreed with Jovovich’s preference for hacking things, but admitted she has a special place in her heart for fancy Italian firearms. “I get to use an Italian Beretta in this film that’s never been on camera before, so that’s fun,” Larter bragged. “I also like using my knife and getting at Wesker. That’s pretty cool.” Larter went on to say that she and her co-stars were pretty bruised and battered by the end of the shoot as a result of the intense action sequences. “We spent a lot of time with stunt coordinators, with the weapons experts, making sure that we were doing it right and we were doing it safe. When you have five actors lined up and you’re shooting blanks — it’s one thing if everyone is 50 feet away, but when you’re within 3 feet of someone, you can really get hurt,” Larter explained. “It’s making sure that with all of us you really take the time to be professional.” “You also want to look real,” she added. “I don’t want to look like a sissy with a Beretta. I want you to believe that I will take your ass out.” From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010.
