Eminem, Jay-Z Track ‘Syllables’ Leaks Online

The dated tune, titled ‘Syllables,’ also features Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Stat Quo and Cashis. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Leave it to the last two Hottest MCs winner, Eminem and Jay-Z, to lament the lost art of lyricism in hip-hop. The two top-notch rappers — along with Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Stat Quo and Cashis — spit about catchy choruses and gimmicks taking over the game on “Syllables.” The track is a buried studio gem from old recording sessions that made its way online on Tuesday night. “If we got to dumb down our style and A-B-C it, then so be it,” Em raps over slow piano stabs. “‘Cause nowadays, these kids, geez/ Don’t give a sh– about lyrics, all they want to hear is a beat and that’s it/ Long as they can go to the club and get blitz, pick up some chicks and get some digits. “We don’t know a word to the verse, we only know the chorus,” he adds later. “‘Cause the chorus repeats the same four words for us.” It’s unclear when the song was recorded, although Cashis confirmed that the number was dated via a Twitter post . “I recorded it a while ago but it just came out today,” wrote the rapper. “Timing is everything.” The tune likely dates back to when Cashis was a newcomer on Shady Records (he and Stat Quo, an Aftermath signee, have since left the respective labels). Meanwhile, a track called “Topless” featuring Eminem and Nas also hit the Net on Tuesday night. A previous version of the song with Nas and T.I. has been circulating online for some time. Em and Tip both rap in cadences similar to Dr. Dre, a sign that their vocals are references for the producer. Related Artists Eminem Jay-Z

Time Celebrates Methodist Seminary’s Move to Train Imams and Rabbis Too

For centuries, theological seminaries minted trained and licensed ministers of their respective religious traditions. They took seriously their creedal and confessional commitments to their respective faiths and denominations. While comparative theology may have been taught, it was with a view to understand and critically evaluate them as rival truth claims, not equally valid truthful claims. But those dark, backwards days may be behind us if Claremont School of Theology successfully paves the way. Or at least that’s the sentiment conveyed in Time magazine writer Elizabeth Dias’s August 22 article, “Training Pastors, Rabbis, and Imams Together.” Dias’s 10-paragraph-long August 22 article portrayed Claremont president Jerry Campbell as a “classic American” entrepreneur who took a novel approach to the school’s “low enrollment and in-the-red” balance sheet: “end isolated clerical training” by “bring[ing] toegether Claremont, the Islamic Center of Southern California (ICSC) and the Academy for Jewish Religion California.” Of course, religious training deals in matters of eternal verities, not marketplace commodities, so that sort of approach is unwise, religious conservatives would argue. Yet Dias excluded any dissent from her examination into the newly inclusive Methodist seminary.  Indeed, Dias’s word choice in the following passage seems to hint conservative critics are opposed to religious tolerance (emphasis mine): To be sure, Claremont’s push to desegregate religious education has encountered its share of roadblocks . The most notable to date occurred in January when questions about Claremont’s commitment to Christian education nearly cost the school its funding and sanction from the United Methodist Church. After a five-month investigation, Campbell prevailed. “We explained clearly to the [Methodist] review team that in fact our United Methodist character continues intact throughout this program,” he said. ” We intend to be the Christian partner in this endeavor, and so we are not changing our United Methodist character essentially in any way.” But how can a Christian seminary grant divinity degrees to persons of religious traditions that it views as false religions? And if Claremont views other religious traditions as equally valid, wouldn’t that by definition be a denial of the truth claims of Christian Scripture, which holds forth Jesus Christ as the only “name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). A thorough religion reporter would explore these questions; sadly Dias failed to do just that.

WaPo’s Frank Ahrens Suggests Krugman, Kudlow as Potential Romer Replacements

Paul Krugman and Larry Kudlow – not exactly two guys you would associate with one another. However, they are two media figures Washington Post columnist Frank Ahrens thinks should be candidates for the same job. In his Aug. 15 column , Ahrens wrote about some of the people that should replace outgoing chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers Christina Romer. He named several candidates including Pepsi’s Indra Nooyi, James Sinegal, co-founder and chief executive of Costco, and Ford chief executive Alan Mulally. But he also named New York Times columnist Paul Krugman and CNBC’s “Kudlow Report” host Larry Kudlow . In his case for Krugman, Ahrens wondered that since Krugman can talk the talk, can he walk the walk as well. “Outside the academic world, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman is best known for his New York Times columns arguing that the $787 billion, debt-busting stimulus bill was not enough, so even moderate Democrats — not to mention conservatives — might lose their minds with this pick. But maybe it’s time for Krugman to put his money where his mouth is,” Ahrens wrote. “You think government needs to spend more to get us out of this funk? Okay, Paul. Here’s the key to the car.”  In the case of Larry Kudlow, Ahrens wrote the CNBC host would be a wise choice because he can communicate economic policies clearly. “You might laugh at this one, but CNBC anchor Larry Kudlow worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Office of Management and Budget during the Reagan administration before going to Wall Street to make his millions and subsequently flame out like a booze-and-drug-fueled Icarus, a low period he has discussed openly,” Ahrens wrote. “But Americans believe in second chances, and Kudlow’s been one-day-at-a-timing it for more than a decade. There is no more articulate spokesman for supply-side economics and tax-cut job creation. Yet, not even his legendary selection of suits and ties will likely win him admirers in the Obama White House.” Ahrens also appeared on CNBC’s “Street Signs” with Erin Burnett on Aug. 16 to argue for his suggestions, including making the case for Kudlow. Albeit unlikely, Ahrens says idea isn’t as crazy as one might think. “Larry Kudlow, great American,” Ahrens said. “I know you’re going to laugh or some of the viewers may laugh. But, look, the guy has been in this position before in previous administrations. He’s been on Wall Street. He knows about how to talk to folks in government. He knows about how the private markets work. And there’s no really more eloquent spokesman for supply-side job creation through tax cuts. Listen, you can know all you want about policy, but if you can’t explain yourself to the President, then that’s a real key thing, a real key element of this job. To get the President’s ear, you have to be able to explain yourself. It’s sort of fun, but it’s not as crazy as you might think.”

Armchair Pundits and Climate Science

Photo via the NY Times One of the most worthy critiques of modern media is that it’s increasingly reliant on pundits and opinion makers, and increasingly less concerned with actual reportage. Take my job, for example. I do a fair amount of original reportage, and have contacts in pertinent fields. But the majority of the work I do is locating stories of note, commenting on them, and explaining their relevance to the green sphere. There are now thousands of people employed to do this with their respective beats — and sometimes, it shows. Fo… Read the full story on TreeHugger
