Dr. Ebbie Parsons III Writes About Learning Expectations In Black Schools Dr. Ebbie Parsons III has made it his personal mission to improve the institution of education and has proudly impacted the lives of more than 100,000 children around the world while delivering unprecedented business results to the organizations in which he has served. The co-founder of Yardstick Learning has recently penned a profoundly eye-opening piece for HuffPo on the educational expectations placed on Black youth vs. white youth in our schools today. The basic point of my argument is that “proficient” is such a low standard that not a single child who scores “proficient” in all areas according to the standards will actually be college or career ready upon matriculation from high school. The expectations are too low for any of these kids to rely on “proficiency” to help them get admitted into a competitive college and there’s nothing about any of these standards that are actually preparing these kids to be career ready for any type of position deemed to be on a “career track” by any American standard. These standards aren’t good enough for White students so why should schools be allowed to tout them as success for low-income Black and Brown students? How many times have you seen schools say that they’ve transformed or turned around a school by getting up to 70% proficient? Or what about the schools that brag that 100% of their kids are proficient? I implore you to peel back the onion to find out what percent of those kids are advanced proficient. And trust me, if that number is less than 10% and they’re touting 100% proficiency then you should know that the school is nothing more than a testing mill preparing kids for standardized assessments. Dr. Parsons goes onto argue that affluent communities (more likely to be disproportionately white) tend to teach analysis, critical thinking and offer more advancement opportunities to their students. Affluent communities try to build critical thinkers who are exposed to a vast array of opportunities and curriculum that explores all of the core content areas with a critical eye. They’re not teaching rote memorization of a standard so that kids can do well on an assessment. They’re teaching kids to actually “get it”. Many of them may even have fewer students that score proficient but nearly all of the students who are proficient actually score “advanced proficient” on an assessment because they have a firm understanding of the material. We must choose our children’s education “eyes wide open” and understand when the wool is being pulled over our eyes. The institutional racism that is “proficient” only continues to keep Black and Brown children from ever experiencing the real American dream. We need to understand the standards in order to challenge the standards. This is our responsibility as this determines our future! Do you think the standard is set too low for many students in Black communities so that their skill set leaves them in a position to just be “proficient” or far below their white peers??

Crips In Brooklyn Send 10-Year-Old Boy To Set Fire To Local Discount Store 10.Years. Old. Uncle Snoop needs to holla at his set, cuz. Via NYDailyNews The 10-year-old terror arrested for robbing an elderly woman and trying to set a Brooklyn store on fire was well on his way to becoming one of the youngest gang members in the city, officials said. A Brooklyn Crips set is recruiting the 10-year-old, and the arson at a Deals Discount store on Clarkson Ave. in East Flatbush on Tuesday was some kind of initiation, police sources said. That’s pretty much unheard of, according to NYPD Assistant Commissioner Kevin O’Connor of the Juvenile Justice Division. Ten-year-old suspect in Brooklyn mugging now accused of setting store on fire: sources “It’s uncommon to hear a 10-year-old in a gang,” O’Connor said. “It’s not uncommon to hear that kids are being influenced by them.” Violent gangs and street crews were responsible for 60 of the 161 murders — about 37% — during the first half of the year. They were also tied to 283 — or about half —of the 569 shootings that occurred over the same time period, police said. Is there NO code of ethics among these sill azz gangs?? SMFH. Florida Police Union Starts Smear Campaign Against Young Woman Who Posted Video Of Beating We’ve told y’all time and time again to be careful about what you put on social media. Here is a prime example of how crooked a** cops will try to place the blame on black people when they’re the ones out here doing wrong. According to Raw Story : A Florida woman who posted video of a Miami cop beating a black teenager in the back of police cruiser has found herself under attack by the Miami Fraternal Order of Police, reports the Washington Post . Pushing back against social media — described as having placed a very negative tone on law enforcement nationwide” — the Miami Fraternal Order of Police union handed out the name and some purported Facebook photos of Marilyn Smith who posted the video of the cop assault taken by her friend Shenitria Blocker. The video, which has since gone viral, shows an unidentified officer beating a suspected pot suspect in the back of a police cruiser, before another officer tried to yank the recording device from Blocker’s hand. According to Blocker, police told her to delete the video or she would be arrested. Instead she shared the video with Smith who then posted it to her Facebook page, leading to an investigation and suspension of the officer. In case you missed the video here it is: Why beat someone who is HANDCUFFED. SMH. And these azzholes claim the man was “protecting the community”: In a statement to the press, Union President Lt. Javier Ortiz defended the officer saying he was “protecting our community,” before criticizing the public for using social media to shine a light on police abuses by adding, “social media has placed a very negative tone on law enforcement nationwide.” Along with the the statement the Union also handed out screenshots taken from Smith’s Facebook page showing her with black men holding guns. “What is extremely concerning is that the poster of this video (aka Facebook Marilyn Smith) has photographs of her with young men armed with handguns. It seems that no one cares to address this. Social media has focused so much on #blacklifematters [sic] /alllifematters campaigns, yet nobody targets the root of the problem our community faces today,” the statement read. “If the police officer has done something not within policy, it must be corrected. With that said, there is a much more serious message by this video poster. Our community has accepted behavior that motivates violence in our younger generation. It’s time for the community to take a stand against this reckless behavior and stop the violence. As the saying goes: It takes a village to raise a child. Guns don’t belong in the hands of children. It is the responsibility of our stakeholders that live in our community to stop that from occurring in the first place.” Smith has taken her Facebook page down while the case is still being investigated. Damn shame. These bozos try to deflect their wrongdoing by shaming people… But what do you think about the argument that violence in the community and the glamorization of guns is at the root of the problem. Is that a fair assessment??? Purported screenshots of Marilyn Smith’s Facebook page provided by Miami Fraternal Order of Police Continue reading
Country music superstar Tim McGraw will headline July concert to benefit Sandy Hook Promise, a group that seeks to protect children from gun violence. Surprisingly, or perhaps not, this announcement resulted in serious backlash from gun advocates calling McGraw a hypocrite and a whole lot worse. Among the critics was fellow country music star Travis Tritt, who tweeted his disdain for McGraw’s concert, and he was far from alone in that sentiment. The blog Bearing Arms, for its part, reported the story with the headline “Tim McGraw Poised to Dixie Chick Himself With Gun Control Benefit Concert.” McGraw “seems poised to make a similar, potentially career-ending move,” the blog argued, referencing the Dixie Chicks’ Iraq War controversy of 2003. Lead singer Natalie Maines unabashedly slammed President George W. Bush over that military initiative, and the group’s popularity slowly declined. Coincidence? Natural progression of a pop country girl group peaking around then anyway? Perhaps, but many have linked McGraw’s and Maines’ comments. Meanwhile, McGraw responded that he supports gun ownership, but added, “I also believe that with gun ownership comes the responsibility of education and safety.” Most certainly, the 47-year-old husband of Faith Hill said, “when it relates to what we value most, our children … I can’t imagine anyone who disagrees with that.” In his announcement, McGraw said, “Out of this tragedy a group was formed that made a promise to honor the lives lost and turn it into a moment of transformation.” “Sandy Hook Promise teaches that we can do something to protect our children from gun violence. I want to be a part of that promise – as a father and as a friend.” View Slideshow: Faith Hill and Tim McGraw Photos: Through the Years Unlike McGraw, Billy Currington, who would have been the opening act for the July concert, succumbed to the pressure and bowed out of the concert. Writing on his Facebook page, Currington said he would donate to a local organization, but “I’ve never been one to take on controversial issues – I’m a singer.” The Sandy Hook Promise group formed to honor the 20 children and six staff members gunned down in an elementary school in December 2012. Adam Lanza , 20 entered the Newtown, Conn., school and went on a rampage. He also killed his mother prior to the attack and committed suicide afterward. The incident is the deadliest school shooting in the U.S., yet little or no action was taken on the federal government level amid pressure from gun advocates. Gun control: Should regulations and laws be strengthened? YES. Fewer guns, fewer tragedies! NO. It’s unconstitutional and won’t stop anything! View Poll »
