AP Headline on O’Donnell ‘Seeking’ Establishment GOP Help Doesn’t Match Content

I suspect that headline writers at the Associated Press would be pleased as punch if readers stopped at their capsulization of Randall Chase’s story and didn’t read it. The headline at the AP’s main site currently reads: “Surprise Del. primary winner seeks GOP support.” Perhaps they’re hoping that Christine O’Donnell’s Tea Party base will be disappointed at the impression the headline gives, namely that O’Donnell is going to the Republican Party establishment for help, and in the process presumably compromising sensible conservative principles. Well, that hope naively assumes that informed readers trust the factual basis of AP headlines. If they trust AP headlines as much as the rest of the press’s and Big Three TV networks’ output, that’s mostly not true (i.e., only 25% have a great deal of trust). Chase’s report makes it pretty clear that a lot of heavy hitters and strategists in the GOP are actually coming to her: Some members of a GOP establishment that once shunned tea party favorite Christine O’Donnell are getting behind her now that she has won the Republican Senate primary, offering help in the form of cash and experienced staffers. A young spokeswoman who has been thinking of going back to college is no longer handling media calls. Instead, reporters are referred to a public relations firm run by longtime GOP operative Craig Shirley, who has done communications work for the Republican National Committee and a political action committee that spent $14 million to help re-elect Ronald Reagan. O’Donnell is also getting help from Tom Sullivan, a health care industry executive who worked for the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee in 1990 and later as a political consultant, with clients such as former Republican congressman Dick Armey. … But some experienced hands with Washington ties are pitching in, and contributors have poured in more than $2 million to fund her November contest against Democratic county executive Chris Coons. Sullivan said Monday that the campaign recently brought some big guns on board to help with fundraising, though he declined to identify them. If there’s any evidence that O’Donnell has been “seeking” establishment support, it’s not present in any of the excerpted paragraphs, and it’s at best only vaguely hinted at in the rest of Chase’s piece. Instead, it’s pretty clear for the most part she has people joining her. Headline spinners at the AP can’t change that. Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .

Flying Cars Just Around the Corner for Eighty Years

When Daniel covered the Terrafugia, he wrote “the rest of us here now on a heating planet could use more efficient cars and airplanes, not wacky combos of the two built for the super rich.” It is interesting that nothing has changed in 80 years since this vehicle, shown in Modern Mechanix, was proposed…. ‘Machete’ Director Robert Rodriguez Reveals Trick To Onscreen Nudity

He front-loads his movies with nakedness, then ‘in your mind, everyone is naked the rest of the movie.’ By Kara Warner Robert Rodriguez Photo: MTV News “Machete” was originally conceived as a fake trailer in “Grindhouse,” but fan demand convinced director Robert Rodriguez to make the story into a full-length feature, which opens Friday. The film, which revolves around the titular character and his attempt to clear his sullied name, is full of blood, action, crazy weaponry and beautiful naked and half-naked women. When we caught up with the “Sin City” and “Spy Kids” filmmaker recently, we asked how he decides when to play the naked card and when to avoid it. “Ask my sister. She tells me, ‘You need to have more hot chicks in this movie!’ ” Rodriguez said, playfully deferring to his co-editor and co-writer, Alvaro Rodriguez. “I have a trick,” he admitted. “I did this in ‘Sin City’ too. People say, ‘There’s so much nudity in “Sin City.” ‘ I say, ‘No, if you look close, there’s only [some] at the very beginning.’ ” Rodriguez said showing a lot of skin from the get-go makes people think they’re seeing more than they do. “If you do it at the beginning of the movie, in your mind, everyone is naked the rest of the movie if they’re scantily clad — because that’s how the comics are drawn,” he said. “[‘Machete’] was the same way.” Rodriguez cited a particular scene at the beginning of the film, in which Machete tries to save a beautiful (and naked) woman, as his prime example. He said the decision to have the actress appear sans clothing throughout the entire scene helps enable extra tricks in the plot that wouldn’t work otherwise. “That was the first scene I wrote. There’s got to be a girl that he goes to save and she’s naked and he’s having to run out with this naked girl over his shoulder, but then you put a twist on it,” Rodriguez explained, continuing with a pseudo-spoiler . “She ends up working for the other side and tricking him by being nude. That way he doesn’t see it coming. Everything else, he’d be able to see a trick coming,” he said, adding that there isn’t much more skin in the rest of the film (save for a topless scene in a pool). “It’s really just that trick.” “Machete,” starring Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Robert De Niro and Don Johnson, opens Friday. What do you think of Rodriguez’s trick? Will it affect how you watch the film now? Let us know in the comments! Julia Roberts, Javier Bardem Play ‘Eat Pray Love’ Vs. Gym Tan Laundry

‘What’s gym, tan, laundry?’ Roberts asks MTV News at film’s New York premiere. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Javier Bardem and Julia Roberts attend the premiere of “Eat Pray Love” in New York City on Tuesday Photo: Michael Loccisano/Getty Images For devoted fans of the Elizabeth Gilbert book that has been adapted into a film opening Friday, “Eat Pray Love” isn’t just a title, it’s a mantra. Similarly, fans of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” know about mantras: The cast made a ritual out of gym, tan, laundry, and followers quickly adopted GTL. So when MTV News hit the red carpet on Tuesday for the New York City premiere of “Eat Pray Love” , we just had to ask, when it comes to words to live by, is it “eat, pray, love” or “gym, tan, laundry”? A somewhat clueless Julia Roberts was stumped. “What’s gym, tan, laundry? Oh, I’ve heard of ‘Jersey Shore,’ ” the star said to MTV News. And it seems she wasn’t the only one of the “Eat” stars who had no idea what we were talking about. “I don’t know that one. I thought you were going to say, ‘Suck it,’ and I was [going to be] like, ‘That’s not three words, to begin with, and that’s not a mantra,’ ” Billy Crudup explained. “Is that MTV?” the actor asked. “Oh, I know ‘Warren the Ape.’ That’s MTV. I’ve been on it.” So, does Javier Bardem start his day with GTL? “No. Gym, tan, laundry … no. No, no! I don’t even know what that means!” the Oscar-winner laughed. “I will look for it in the dictionary.” And fans of the “Jersey Shore” can add star Richard Jenkins to the list of people who have no idea what the heck gym, tan, laundry is. “No, I don’t. I don’t,” he confessed. “I watch ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ ” “Glee” star Mike O’Malley, however, was more familiar with all things “Jersey Shore.” “Well, I know all about these kids. I know about JWoww, Snooki. I’m trying to get abs like the Situation,” he joked. “I’m all about the tanning and the laundry,” “Eat” director and “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy said. “I’m too old to be tanning. I love those guys on that show. I think they’re funny and amazing and quite brilliant at what they’re doing.” So does your life revolve around making sure you eat, pray, love or is it all about GTL? Snooki Calls ‘Jersey Shore’ Castmate Angelina ‘Sad’

‘She didn’t really open up to anybody,’ Snooki says of why her housemate never fit in. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Audrey Kim Snooki Photo: MTV News Early on in season one of “Jersey Shore,” feisty Angelina got axed from her job at the boardwalk T-shirt shop, tossed her belongings in some trash bags and fled Seaside Heights. None of her castmates expected the self-declared Kim Kardashian of Staten Island to return for the new, Miami Beach-based season, but Snooki, the Situation and the rest of the crew got a serious shock when they arrived and found out they’d once again be bunking with Angelina . They were not pleased. “I just feel like she didn’t fit into the family,” Snooki told MTV News. “When I saw her in the house, when I walked into Miami, I was like, ‘What is this girl doing here? Why are you here? We could have brought [Deena] in.’ ” That would be Deena Nicole Cortese , a 23-year-old pal of Snooki’s who joined the show after the cast left Miami and headed back up to the Shore. “I’m different because I’m just a personable person,” Deena told us . “I don’t take things to heart. People can make fun of me ’til the day I die, and I will just take it in and be like, ‘Yeah, you know what? Whatever.’ ” But when the show was taping down South, it was just Angelina facing off against her other roommates. And the results weren’t pretty, as the first few episodes of the second season make clear. JWoww threatened multiple times to brawl with her, and Snooki declared, “You’re a f—ing white rat and you’re f—ing pale and you’re nasty.” OK, then. The bottom line is that, after the drama of season one and some alleged off-camera smack talk, the relationship between Angelina and the rest of the “Shore” folks was nearly beyond repair. “Angelina, she just didn’t fit in with anybody, and she didn’t really open up to anybody,” Snooki said. “I feel that’s why nobody could really connect with her. And it’s sad. … At first, we didn’t even want to look at her or give her the time of day. But then we felt bad about it, and we gave her a second chance. And she did what she did with it. You’re going to have to see what happens.” Do you think the rest of the cast gave Angelina a chance? Sound off in the comments. Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
