REVIEW: Danish Actress Paprika Steen Shines in Modest But Moving Applause

Martin Zandvliet’s Applause is a small movie with modest ambitions, and accordingly, it packs only a modest emotional punch. But as a showcase for its star, the Danish actress Paprika Steen (possibly best known for her role in Thomas Vinterberg’s 1998 Dogme picture The Celebration ), it’s still rewarding in its own quiet, jarring way.

REVIEW: Characters Can’t Quite Connect Amid the City-Symphony Elegance of Mumbai Diaries

Set amid the stark dualities of the new Bombay, Mumbai Diaries follows four characters whose lives suggest the various ways one can experience what writer Suketu Mehta dubbed the “maximum city,” and the social and economic determinism that closes each of those experiences off from the others. The film, writer and director Kiran Rao’s feature debut, is marked by an ambition as grand as it is vulnerable to classist cliché. Rao’s ultimate achievements — including a balanced, doleful tone and moments of city symphony elegance — are undercut by the arrangement of her characters into narrative castes that cross paths but can’t quite connect.

REVIEW: Actions Speak Louder Than Dirty Words in No Strings Attached

It’s a noble thing to make a movie that tries to capture the way real people speak. But how do you know how close you’re getting? And even when you put raunchy turns of phrase or the most current slang in your characters’ mouths, are you really capturing the reality of those characters’ — or of anyone’s — lives? Language is either a part of the landscape of a movie or it’s window dressing, the first thing you notice. Can movie speech be believable and natural when it jumps out at us?

Jennifer Lopez’s ‘On The Floor’ Will Be ‘A Big One,’ Producer RedOne Predicts

Lady Gaga collaborator calls new ‘American Idol’ judge ‘a true artist.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Jennifer Lopez Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/ Getty Images Jennifer Lopez might be a new judge on “American Idol,” but let’s not forget she’s also a pop star. For her new club banger, “On the Floor,” J.Lo teamed up with Pitbull and red-hot producer RedOne. The producer tells MTV News that for his work with the singer, he thought big. Let’s face it: With J.Lo, you have to go big or go home. “I love J.Lo. I’ve always been a big fan. She’s a true star. They asked me to work with her and I was like, ‘Absolutely,’ ” he explained. “She’s one of those that I’ve always admired. What she’s done with the music and film and everything, she’s a true artist — a 360 artist. “It was natural for me to get into the studio with her,” he continued. “I’m excited about J.Lo’s ‘On the Floor.’… It’s getting the most incredible reaction. I’m happy for her.” RedOne knew that if he was going to make a smash for the star, there would be several elements involved: dance, parties and her Latina heritage. He hoped to capture it all on the club-ready track, which samples Kaoma’s worldwide hit “Lambada,” and definitely has a Latin flare. “She’s a dancer. She can sing. I was really amazed, and I had so much fun working with her,” he gushed. “Her energy and everything about her is a star, and it was natural for me to do what we did. “Of course, she’s global: She’s a global artist,” he continued. “She’s a global actress, and the music has to be global, and the rhythmic side of it or the Latin and this thing of a dancer [all has to be there]. “She said, ‘I want to dance. I want to make people dance and be able to sing with me.’ That’s what we did, and it feels good. I think we’re going to have a big one.” What do you think of “On the Floor”? Avril Lavigne ‘Really Excited To Be Back’ With ‘What The Hell’

Song’s 3-D video will premiere Sunday. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Avril Lavigne Photo: MTV News Avril Lavigne is as bratty as ever on her new single, the catchy, almost bubbly “What the Hell.” The lead single off Lavigne’s upcoming release, Goodbye Lullaby , due March 8, has not only been burning up the iTunes charts, but it’s also gotten some Twitter love from Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. “I’m just really excited to be back,” the former teen star told MTV News. “It’s been a few years, and I’m excited to see that ‘What the Hell’ [is] doing good so far on iTunes and [with] the fans. The response has been really great, so I’m happy.” The song also just had an impressive debut on the Billboard charts , landing at #6 on the Digital Songs chart, beating Kanye West and Jay-Z’s new song, “H.A.M.” This Sunday, fans will finally get the chance to see the clip for the video when it debuts on ABC Family. “The music video for ‘What the Hell’: It’s kind of a guy chasing me around, and I hop into a random cab, and he’s chasing me,” Lavigne explained. “And I go through a clothing store and he chases me, but at the end of the video, it’s really just me having a bunch of fun with him, and he’s my boyfriend, so I like him in the end.” The video is special because it was shot in 3-D. “The music video’s in 3-D, and my favorite part of the video is the rock-out scene at the end where I jump onstage and I’m with my band,” she said. “When we shot it and I got to watch it back in 3-D with the glasses and actually you can see the crowd’s hands and it felt like you were live in a crowd, so it was kind of cool.” Are you a fan of “What the Hell”? Is Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” Movie a Must Watch?

Just barely legal to do ANYTHING in this country, Justin Bieber has the world, and every tween and teeny bopper (and some grown women) hanging on his every word. With his young voice, his ALL THE WAY fly style (which I can’t even hate on. Cause his shoe point is on point) and who can forget the hair. Now he is adding a film to his repertoire. Never say Never named after one of his songs (of course) will hit both 3d and 2d theaters February 11th (a day before my 21st birthday). Now I’ve watched the trailer and this seems quite interesting. (or not!) It is basically a documentary of Justin Bieber’s life and how he was into drumming from a young age and the movie continues up until current day and the latest craze of Bieber Fever. (glad I don’t have that) If you’re a Bieber fan, I suggest you go to the doctor before seeing this movie cause you just might pass out during the movie. There is an incredible mixture of old family movies, of Justin as a child (lol oh wait he still is a child) No but seriously, it’s good that his family took the time to document Justin making beats on chairs, playing the piano, playing the guitar because it is quite obvious that has paid off. Also mixed in is some of Justin’s You Tube video. Which we all know was how was discovered. (I need to get my You Tube game up) The movie also gives a behind the scenes look at the Biebs on tour with his mentor Usher, his performances with the big names in the industry. And of course quick interviews with the ever loyal Justin Bieber fans, for without which he would be nothing. And of course to make the movie all nice and warm and fuzzy, the moral behind the movie is to never let someone tell you that you can’t do something. Hints the Never say Never title. People close to Justin, in the film attest to the fact that he was turned away by major labels. He was told that he would never sell. And bottom line – he wasn’t going to make it. And if you’ve been living under and rock or smacked on the head by a dead bird, he has proven many people wrong. Part of me, when I first saw the trailer, was like ok he could’ve had his own ‘E True Hollywood Story” and kept on moving, but I think it is a very smart business move for Justin and his team to make it a motion picture. Because I am willing to bet that he was ALL THE WAY hands on with this project, which means possible royalties from ticket sales, and of course when it’s on DVD he will be making money hand over fist. Touché Justin…Touché. I’m not sure I personally would spend my money to see this movie, and even if I wanted to, I do not want to stand in line with a bunch of screaming and over exaggerated Bieber fans. But I know the film will be a hit at the box office without a doubt. REVIEW: The Housemaid Seduces with Shallow But Stylish Pleasures

Im Sang-soo’s The Housemaid is a lush, chilly entertainment that’s a little bit Hitchcock (in its wickedness and coolly composed visuals) and a little bit Sirk (in its numerous over-the-top flourishes, often involving disastrous household accidents). In the end, it’s perhaps not enough of either. But the picture glides by on its stylishness and on the strength of its performances. What it lacks in passion it makes up in bravado, and its showiness alone is seductive.

REVIEW: Director Peter Weir Returns Via Bold, Bumpy Way Back

The kind of filmmaking excitement that director Peter Weir brings to movies is bone deep. It doesn’t emerge in the flashy flourishes that come off as compulsively exhibitionistic — the “Dude, Where’s My Camera Car?” school. Instead, in the potent and dream-like The Way Back , Weir’s subtle control is evident by the way he uses sound, embracing the allure and menace it simultaneously evokes. And we’re reminded how crushingly obvious many directors are about incorporating the aural aspect of their work; generally when the audience is aware of it, it’s used like a blunt object by horror film directors.

REVIEW: Genre Confusion Makes For Hard-to-Watch Dilemma

The Dilemma , Ron Howard’s cheerless, would-be relationship farce, begins with two couples around a dinner table and ends with two men running into each other’s arms. Ronny (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Kevin James) are tight. Friends since college, they share their lives, they share a business — Nick designs car engines and Ronny sells them to Big Auto — and they’ve shared a woman at least once, just to keep things on the level. They share, in other words, the kind of bond that has transformed a certain kind of comedy into a homo-social love story, a soft-core sausage fest.
