National Trust’s Youth Program To Preserve Black Historic Landmarks

T he National Trust for Historic Preservation has been at the forefront of conserving landmarks throughout the country that are embedded in the fabric of Black history. In an effort to diversify the industry and develop career pathways for the next generation of aspiring preservationists, the organization created a program that gives young African Americans first-hand experience with the restoration of landmarks. NEWS: New Partnership with @Fund2F will Provide Youth Preservation Training at Sites of African American History #TellTheFullHistory #NinaSimone https://t.co/dTbYMQZ1OZ — HOPE Crew (@HopeCrewNTHP) May 2, 2019 In 2014 the organization launched an initiative called the Hands-on Preservation Experience Crew (HOPE Crew) as an avenue to provide youth with training sessions that covered masonry repair, window restoration, and other skills. This year, with a grant from the Fund II Foundation, the National Trust is putting the focus on exposing Black youth to preservation trades. Through the program—which is being led by the organization’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund—participants will have hands-on experience with rebuilding structures that are tied to Black achievement and activism. The first cohort of Black students is currently enrolled in a pre-apprenticeship program at North Carolina’s Schenck Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center. One of their first projects will be the preservation of late songstress Nina Simone ’s former North Carolina home. They will spend a few days re-painting and making repairs in the house. Other projects include the restoration of playwright August Wilson ’s Pittsburgh home and a house in Long Island that belonged to John and Alice Coltrane . “This Fund II support—the largest investment in HOPE Crew’s 5-year history—represents an important evolution in the National Trust’s commitment to telling stories that reflect the African American experience in this country,” Executive Director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund Brent Leggs said in a statement. The leadership team at the Fund II Foundation says they are committed to ensuring that the achievements and contributions of Black pioneers don’t go unsung. “Our commitment to HOPE Crew supports two key pillars of the Foundation: to preserve the rich, cultural heritage of African Americans whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the world, and to introduce young people to occupations in STEM related fields,” said Linda Wilson , Executive Director, Fund II Foundation. “The projects celebrate iconic figures, instill community pride, and also provide the opportunity to educate about them and their achievements for generations to come.” There have been several initiatives launched to increase diversity within the preservation industry. In 2018, the National Trust, the National Park Service and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation joined forces with Morgan State University for the creation of a program called Preservation in Practice which was designed to empower HBCU students to pursue careers in historic preservation. Boxer Tony Harrison’s Gym Hosts Prom Dress Drive For Detroit Teens

See the original post:

P rom season is in full swing, but for many students, the event that is often considered a pinnacle in the high school experience isn’t a reality due to financial setbacks. A Detroit-based boxing gym is paying it forward by providing underserved teenage girls with prom dresses so they won’t have to miss out on that special moment, the Detroit Free Press reported. Detroit boxing champ's gym gives away prom dresses for teenagers https://t.co/rXjTjddboS — Detroit Free Press (@freep) May 5, 2019 The SuperBad Fitness boxing gym—which is owned by professional boxer Tony Harrison —collected over 50 dresses to give away to students in need who are preparing for their upcoming proms and graduations. Those who operate the gym transformed one of the facility’s rooms into a mock boutique where teens have been coming in to choose from a collection of new and gently-used dresses that were donated locally and from individuals across the country. The teens were also able to choose items from a collection of jewelry, handbags, and shoes to complete their looks. Aware of how costly prom can be, Harrison and his team wanted to host the prom dress drive to ease the financial issues that many students in the local community are dealing with. “It lifts a financial burden. We want to help other girls. Prom can cost so much,” said DeArra Henderson , who is leading the community outreach for the initiative. Harrison, who took home the World Boxing Council’s super welterweight title last year, has continually used his gym as an avenue to give back to his community. The gym has a tutoring center that serves nearly 50 kids each day. “He’s like a parent to each and every one of these kids,” his girlfriend Jasmine Bradley , who oversees the gym’s tutoring center, said in a statement . “And that’s why they love him so much. They feel it. They want to be better than him. They want to be like him. He’s probably the most selfless person I know. “We are trying to reach out to the kids in the neighborhood, and try to show them something different than what is being shown on the regular.” SEE ALSO: Teen Becomes St. Thomas High School’s First-Ever Black Valedictorian Philando Castile’s Mother Pays Off Lunch Debt For High School Students In Minnesota [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3851904″ overlay=”true”]

SMH: Documents Reveal That BART Cops Lied About The Details Of Oscar Grant Shooting & Instigated The Altercation

Source: Mark Boster / Getty New Report Proves Officer Lied About Details Of Oscar Grant Shooting According to CNN , a newly released report reveals even more disturbing details about the murder of Oscar Grant, an unarmed black man who was fatally shot by a police officer more than 10-years ago. On New Year’s Day 2009, 22-year-old Oscar Grant was pulled off a train by Bay Area Rapid Transit(BART) officers who were responding to reports of a fight on public transportation. Grant was struck multiple times and forced to lie face down on the Fruitvale train platform. Moments later, officer Johannes Mehserle shot him in the back. Mehserle claimed the shooting was “unintentional”, and that he meant to draw his taser and not his gun. A jury convicted Mehserle on an involuntary manslaughter charge and he spent roughly seven months behind bars. The incident also resulted in the termination of Anthony Pirone, a former BART officer who was accused of trying to conceal the details surrounding Grant’s murder. Pirone was one of the first officers to encounter Grant at Fruitvale BART Station on the night of the shooting. Witnesses described him as a “crazy cop,” and claimed he had screamed racial slurs at Grant shortly before Mehserle opened fire. Pirone reportedly told authorities he was “fighting for his life” after Grant allegedly kneed him in the groin; however, a bystander’s video of the incident did not support the ex-officer’s claims. “None of this appears to have happened during the video,” investigators wrote in the report. An autopsy report also revealed Grant had suffered a hemorrhage during the incident, after he was kneed in the head—a detail Pirone failed to disclose to authorities. “Pirone used force against Grant as a first resort and even then the use of force … did not appear reasonable, justifiable or excusable,” the report stated. “[Pirone’s] willful and reckless conduct … endangered the safety of the public.” New details from a 144-page report completed by Meyers Nave Law Firm, which led BART’s internal investigation into the shooting, show inconsistencies in the stories. “The reports clearly show that because of the officers not deescalating a situation, but escalating a situation, my son is not here today,” Grant’s mother, Wanda Johnson, KRON4. “The people on the platform, you know, still, 10 years later, having to play that in their minds, over and over and over, unnecessarily.”

Philando Castile’s Mother Pays Off Lunch Debt For High School Students In Minnesota

T he mother of Philando Castile —a 32-year-old Black man who tragically lost his life at the hands of a police officer in Falcon Heights, Minnesota three years ago—is honoring her son’s legacy by turning her pain into something positive. According to CBS Minnesota , Valerie Castile has paid off the lunch debt for students at Robbinsdale Cooper High School. Philando Castile’s Mom Presents $8,000 Donation To Help Clear Student Lunch Debts https://t.co/3BcZ2BMIPs pic.twitter.com/enh7OEzJog — WCCO – CBS Minnesota (@WCCO) April 26, 2019 Castile donated $8,000 to the school through the Philando Castile Relief Foundation. The funds will go towards clearing the lunch debt bill for high school seniors who are graduating. Within the district, students who have outstanding lunch debts are barred from receiving their diplomas. Castile said she wanted to make the donation because Philando—who worked at a school cafeteria—was adamant about helping students pay off their lunch debt. “This is something that Philando held near and dear to his heart,” she told the news outlet in a statement. “He’d pay for children’s lunch meals out of his own pocket instead of letting a child go hungry that day he would pay for it himself.” Last year a charity created in Philando’s honor raised $130,000 to pay off the lunch debt for students who attended school in St. Paul. Outstanding lunch debt has become a growing issue within the school district. According to Carlton Jenkins who serves as the superintendent of Robbinsdale Area Schools, the amount of debt has skyrocketed to $300,000. Many of the students who have debt are living in poverty, making it extremely hard for them to pay for lunch. Donations like the one made by the Philando Castile Relief Foundation are needed. The Minnesota school district isn’t the only one facing lunch debt issues. USA Today reported that 75 percent of school districts across the country had unpaid student meal debt during the 2016-2017 academic year. Jenelle Evans: Back with David Eason Just Days After He Murdered Her Dog?!

If you've been keeping up with all the news about Jenelle Evans and David Eason this week … Well, we don't really have to say “if,” do we? There really hasn't been a way to avoid it. But just to be absolutely certain we're all on the same page, today we're going to be talking about the fact that David killed Jenelle's dog on Monday, and everything that's happened since. And how it really, really looks like she's already made the choice to take divorce off the table. 1. Poor Nugget On Monday, David beat and then shot Jenelle’s dog, Nugget. We’ve heard so reports about all that went down, but let’s start with the facts. 2. The “Proof” David said that he did it because Nugget bit Ensley, and he shared this photo as proof, but as we all can see, the dog didn’t even break the skin. 3. Also This Besides, even if the dog did bite the kid, there are many solutions that would be better than shooting it in the backyard. They could have re-homed it, they could have done some training, they could have taught their kids how to interact with animals. 4. Just Terrible In texts with a friend that Jenelle shared, she said that David hit the dog before he shot it, and that he used a shotgun, which is just insane. 5. Now for the Reports Reliable news sites have said that sources claim David viciously beat Nugget before getting the gun, and that when he came back inside he was “covered in blood.” 6. Good Jenelle seemed absolutely devastated by the whole thing, and understandably so, and she’s been making statements about how she’s considering divorce. View Slideshow

Austin Jones Sentenced to 10 Years in Jail on Child Pornography Charges

Austin Jones, a long-time YouTube star who preyed upon his enormous teenage following by coercing young girls to send him sexually explicit videos, was sentenced in a Chicago federal court yesterday to 10 years in prison. The 26-year old was arrested in 2017 two counts of production of child pornography. He later confessed to enticing six underage girls to send him X-Rated videos of themselves, according to a plea agreement made available to the public last February. The girls were as young as 14 years old. Jones amassed his large following mostly by singing a cappella covers of famous songs. Prosecutors pushed for an 11-year prison sentence on Friday, although he faced a maximum of 20 years. The lawyers who argued in court against the star said Jones “preyed on their youth, their vulnerabilities and most glaringly, their adoration of him,” per the Associated Press. A defense filing contended Jones’ life was “marred with abuse, pain, loss and death,” asserting he suffered sexual abuse as a child and trying to use that incident as a defense for his actions. Alas, this argument did not hold much weight with the judge. “Production and receipt of child pornography are extraordinarily serious offenses that threaten the safety of our children and communities,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine Neff Welsh said in the government’s sentencing memorandum, adding: “Jones’ actions took something from his victims and their families that they will never be able to get back.” According to the Department of Justice, Jones would tell young girls to submit nude videos of themselves as a way to “prove” their fandom. He also promised these young girls modeling opportunities and a chance to grow their own social media following. In June of 2015, before he was even arrester, Jones shared a 16-minute YouTube video in which he looked directly into the camera and admitted that he used to ask fans to send him twerking videos. But that’s where he drew the line, Jones said. “Nothing ever went further than twerking videos,” he said back then. “There were never any nudes, never any physical contact.” Jones had more than than 534,000 YouTube subscribers and over 41 million total video views at the time of his arrest. In one exchange documented by the government, Jones acknowledged he shouldn’t be talking to a 14-year-old due to her age. He repeatedly told her, though, that she was “so lucky” she had his attention, continuing: “If you’re lucky, maybe I’d let you suck my dick.” When the teenager said she didn’t want either of them to get in trouble over the footage she was recording, he replied: “I guess you really aren’t my biggest fan …..ok then.” In addition to giving the girls suggestions for poses and underwear choices, Jones often gave them “lines” to recite to him. One example? “At the beginning, get super close and say these lines: hey Austin, it’s (name) and this butt is (age) years old and then make it clap for 30 seconds. Got it?”  It doesn’t get too much more disgusting than everything chronicled here.
