‘The Hobbit’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Much-anticipated return to Middle-earth appeals to loyal ‘Lord of the Rings’ fans. By Kevin P. Sullivan Martin Freeman in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Just days after the 10th anniversary of the release of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” we have our first look at director Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-earth. The first trailer for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” packs in a ton of action and gives fans a peek at what they can expect when the first of the two films opens next December. We took some time off from watching the trailer on repeat to give you the rundown on the five key things you should pay attention to in the trailer. The Hobbit(s) It wouldn’t be “The Hobbit” without a strong member of the Shire folk to rally behind. Martin Freeman is Bilbo Baggins, and he jumps right into Jackson’s Middle-earth and feels right at home. He also fits in with the two returning hobbits, Elijah Wood and Ian Holm . Both make welcome returns in the trailer and draw in fans of the original films almost effortlessly. The Dwarves Almost as important as Bilbo in “The Hobbit,” all 13 dwarves play key roles in the story. Fans who feared that the dwarves would look too cartoonish should find some peace of mind with the trailer. They completely worked (especially Richard Armitage as Thorin), with a balance between the child-oriented aspects of the book and the grittier look of the “Lord of the Rings” movies. The Song Nothing shows off that balance better than the dwarves’ song. J.R.R. Tolkien featured many songs in the novel, and Jackson and co. incorporated this one in a natural way. It’s a cool and ominous part of the trailer that sets the tone and shows the film’s close adherence to the novel. However, the films do diverge from the novel to cover new material in a few instances. The White Council Because the book does not offer enough action for two complete movies, the films have been padded out with tales from the appendixes and other Tolkien books. The main addition is the story of the White Council. For those unfamiliar with the books, during the journey to Lonely Mountain, Gandalf leaves Bilbo and the dwarves to fight a mysterious enemy alongside Galadriel and Elrond. Jackson confirmed the story line’s presence in the movie, but Cate Blanchett ‘s appearance in the trailer is our only hint of what’s to come. Gollum The trailer’s big reveal comes at the end as the camera cranes down to the One Ring in the foreground. Next thing we know, Bilbo is chatting up Gollum in the dark, and Andy Serkis crawls down to make his welcome return to the character. The ring and Gollum are the two biggest connections between “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” so their presence here is a near guarantee to rope in any fans of the first films. Teen Mom 2 Recap: Kicking the Can Down the Road

This week on Teen Mom 2 … not a lot happened. At all. Pure filler. Is baby Ali going to be alright? Where is Kieffer? Can Jenelle act like a civilized human being? Will Chelsea’s baby daddy man up? Does Kailyn ever smile? If only the MTV reality hit would have actually advanced any of these plot lines. Alas. Find out who was dealing with what issue in THG’s +/- recap below! The results of Ali’s brain MRI have us on pins and needles. The little girl became sedated while her mama sang to her – and worried. Leah’s being a good mama. Plus 5 . Corey even managed to take a day off work to join her. “I don’t like it,” he says. “I get all nervous and scared …it’s tough. I’m here for you and Ali.” Swoon! Plus 13 . Watching this heartwarming display quickly gets depressing since we know they’re divorced, but Minus only 10 because they were still sincere and mature here. Minus 6 more for MTV stringing us along. Is Ali okay or what?! Jenelle Evans recalls that she pressed charges against Kieffer Delp for domestic abuse: “He pushed me right here that resulted to me laying on the ground.” Plus 8 . Kieffer was MIA in this episode. Let’s make that permanent! Plus 4 . Jenelle and her mom make up, with Barbara welcoming her back into the house. Given what we saw in last week’s episode , it’s a step forward a least. Plus 2 . Similar to the Leah and Corey situation, it’s hard to stomach, knowing Jenelle drops the charges and supposedly doesn’t even want her kid . Minus 27 . Kailyn Lowry tells BF Jordan the big news, that she got her own apartment. Now he can crash with his baby mama instead of his regular mama. Life is good! Plus 6 . She decides to move out of her mom’s house without telling her … and a couple of dudes who look like bouncers do all the heavy lifting. Real normal. Plus 4 . Hilariously, they take the giant TV that wasn’t even hers. Plus 10 . More hilariously, Kailyn’s story ends with a parking lot meeting … and the return of the remote to her mom, its rightful owner. Like an Old West standoff! Plus 9 . Did you hear she wants Jo to impregnate her again supposedly? Wow. Minus 5 . Ooh, a segment on Chelsea’s elective knee surgery. Her stress and complaints really hit close to home after what we’ve seen Leah and Corey endure. Minus 8 . Chelsea’s dad: “You’ll probably have to cut down on your jogging.” Tragic! Plus 4 . Adam proved Randy wrong by sort of caring for baby Aubree by himself. Plus 7 . So he drops his “little bastard” daughter on the floor … he’s trying, right? Minus 13 . Chelsea and Adam cooing at each other in those baby voices? UGH. Minus 21 . The 30-second preview for next week was the highlight of the night. Corey and Leah finally get answers about Ali? Kailyn gets birth control for five YEARS? Adam apparently kidnaps Aubree? Kieffer gets a haircut? Insanity! Plus 10 . EPISODE TOTAL: -11! SEASON TOTAL: -55!

Fantastic Fest: Frodo Loses Epic Nerd Fantasy Boxing Match

A quick update from Austin, where the Fantastic Debates took place at midnight pitting filmmakers, actors, and astrophysicists against each other in spoken debates before pounding it out in the boxing ring: If you were betting on Elijah Wood to reign victorious over Lord of the Rings buddy Dominic Monaghan (or in Hobbit terms, Frodo vs. Merry, who were debating the awesomeness of another fantasy nerd obsession, World of Warcraft), you’d have lost.

‘Hobbit’ Casts Evangeline Lilly In New Role

Former ‘Lost’ star will play new character Tauriel, the Woodland Elf, director Peter Jackson says. By Josh Wigler Evangeline Lilly Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Evangeline Lilly already had a strong connection to Middle-earth thanks to her former relationship with “Lost” co-star Dominic Monaghan — better known to Tolkien fans as “Lord of the Rings”‘ very own Merry Brandybuck, of course — but now she’s strengthening those ties all on her own. Lilly is the latest addition to “The Hobbit,” director Peter Jackson announced on his Facebook page over the weekend. The actress, who starred on “Lost” as fugitive-turned-adoptive-mother Kate Austen throughout the show’s six-season run, will play “a new character” in the two-part “Lord of the Rings” prequel, which is slated to hit theaters in December 2012 and December 2013. “Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character — the Woodland Elf, Tauriel,” Jackson revealed of her casting. “Her name means ‘daughter of Mirkwood’ and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.” Jackson also announced that Barry Humphries has joined the cast as the Goblin King. “Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the longtime manager of Dame Edna Everage,” he wrote. “He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we’re looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.” These are just the latest developments in a string of recent casting moves on the “Hobbit” front. Last week, Jackson filled out two of the story’s most important roles, Smaug the Dragon and Bard the Bowman, with actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Luke Evans , respectively. It’s a “Sherlock Holmes” reunion for Cumberbatch, whose onscreen Watson, Martin Freeman, holds the titular role in “The Hobbit.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hobbit.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Peter Jackson Explains Why He’s Filming The Hobbit at Groundbreaking Frame Rate

Writing from the set of The Hobbit , Peter Jackson took to Facebook Monday to blog his thoughts on filming at 48 frames per second — the increased frame rate championed by folks like James Cameron, who will use it to blow minds in Avatar 2 and 3 . Jackson is currently filming The Hobbit in 3-D at 48 fps instead of the industry standard 24 fps, and as a result, the Lord of the Rings follow-up will be the first wide release to pave the way into a brave new digital world of filmmaking — whether or not theaters around the world are ready for it.
