Precious: Andy Serkis Will Act as Second Unit Director on The Hobbit

As if reprising his role of Gollum in The Hobbit wasn’t enough for Andy Serkis, the motion capturing actor will also work as second unit director during the New Zealand film shoot. “I think I understand Peter’s sensibility and we have a common history of understanding Middle Earth,” Serkis told THR . “A lot of the crew from The Lord of the Rings was returning to work on The Hobbit . There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic.” No truth to the rumor that Serkis will also handle the costume jewelry on the set. Real-Life Eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings Terrorizes Some Cubicles

The UK’ s Technology Studio kicked around some ideas to terrorize everyday citizens, and they came up with a doozy: making JRR Tolkien’s menacing Eye of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings a reality . Using Xbox Kinect technology, Cartesian coordinates and other voodoo, the company has created a glowing eye that follows you around the room and gently traumatizes you as you head to the copier. Watch and cry.

‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Sean Bean On Playing ‘A Good Man For A Change’

Bean plays Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark in upcoming HBO drama. By Kara Warner Sean Bean in “Game of Thrones” Photo: Helen Sloan/ HBO The series premiere is still months away, but it’s never too early to talk about HBO’s upcoming epic “Game of Thrones,” based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy book series “A Song of Ice and Fire.” It’s a loaded, layered drama, but to summarize, think one part sword-wielding medieval fantasy, a la “Lord of the Rings,” and one part sex-charged fight for power, like “The Tudors” or “The Sopranos.” MTV News recently caught up with a few key cast members at the Television Critics Association press tour, where young star Emilia Clarke revealed the hazards of shooting racy scenes. We also spoke to actor Sean Bean, a veteran of sorts when it comes to the fantasy genre, although usually in roles of a villainous nature. In “Game of Thrones,” Bean plays Eddard “Ned” Stark, a noble commanding officer and Lord of Winterfell, the northernmost territory in Martin’s fictional world. Given Bean’s resume, particularly his work in “Lord of the Rings,” we asked the English actor whether he had any reservations in taking on another role in the fantasy genre. “I seem to be quite drawn to the medieval, magical fantasies, as it were,” he said. “It was such a good part, and I read the book and the character, and I just really wanted to play it, so I didn’t have any doubts whatsoever,” Bean assured us. He said diving into the world of “Thrones” was a completely new experience. “I wasn’t aware of the books at first, and I wasn’t aware of how big a following it had,” Bean admitted. “And then when I realized it, I talked to David Benioff, the writer, who I worked with on ‘Troy.’ He’s a great guy, does some great dialogue, and it’s just a wonderful production.” Bean went on to say that HBO’s involvement sweetened the deal. “Knowing you’ve got the backing of HBO and the quality of them, I thought, ‘Wow, this is a great role,’ ” he said. “[Ned is] a good guy as well, a good man for a change for me,” he said with a smile. ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Star Billy Boyd Marries Ali McKinnon

Actor who played Pippin in trilogy weds Wednesday (December 29). By Terri Schwartz Billy Boyd Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Love continued to linger in the air Wednesday (December 29) as Billy Boyd, best known as Pippin the hobbit in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Ali McKinnon. Though he earned international fame and legions of fans for a quest for a different One Ring, The Evening Times reports Boyd kept the wedding very small and intimate. Boyd and McKinnon met in 2002 at a pantomime (British winter musical comedy theater) she was appearing in. The two have a 4-year-old son, Jack, and have been living together in Glasgow’s West End for several years. The Evening Times reports the two were married at Oran Mor, just around the corner from their home. The venue sounds like something straight out of Middle Earth, but it’s actually a converted church that was turned into a cultural center including a couple of restaurants and bars, a nightclub and, of course, a beautiful private-events space. Oran Mor wedding coordinator Louise Turner said she’d met with the couple a few times and “they have been lovely to deal with.” She said only 30 friends and family members attended the ceremony, and the reception was planned for about 160. “It’s not a massive bash, and it will be quite intimate,” Turner said. Though the “Rings” cast has stayed close since the premiere of “Return of the King” in 2003, the Times implied that Boyd’s co-stars — including Elijah Wood, Ian McKellan and Orlando Bloom — did not attend the wedding. In addition to his role in the three “Lord of the Rings” films, Boyd won acclaim for his roles in “The Stone of Destiny,” “The Flying Scotsman” and “On a Clear Day.” He was named Britain’s most eligible bachelor, placing ahead of Prince William, who got engaged this year. Send your well-wishes to the couple in the comments section below!

Jesse Eisenberg on Zombieland 2, Good Sequels and Missing John Ritter

Last week I met actor Jesse Eisenberg for a lengthy discussion of subjects ranging from his coming-of-age in the New York theater to his beloved Zombieland and his awards-season prospects for The Social Network. We covered a lot of ground, which I’ll be retracing this week in a five-part series here at Movieline. And so we arrive, sadly, at the end of our five-part journey with Jesse Eisenberg. By the time the actor and I reached this point, the done-to-death The Social Network had given way to… well, quite a few subjects. Let’s just say that in this last installment of our bar-side conversation, it’s a movie-reference blowout: The Godfather , Jurassic Park , all six Star Wars films and three Lord of the Rings films, among others, made the cut. We also discussed the pending progress of Zombieland 2 and Eisenberg’s surprising affection for the star of Three’s Company .

‘Eclipse’ Star Anna Kendrick Wants Role In ‘The Hobbit’

‘I was and still am obsessed with ‘Lord of the Rings,’ actress reveals. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Anna Kendrick Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Anna Kendrick can completely relate to the throngs of “Twilight” fans who spent the last few days camped out outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles for the “Eclipse” premiere . In fact, there was a time in Kendrick’s life when she did the same exact thing, except her object of devotion was a rock band. And then there’s her whole “Lord of the Rings” obsession, too. “I camped out to see the Strokes . I was obsessed with Julian Casablancas. I had a huge crush,” the Oscar nominee revealed to MTV News about her fandom at the “Eclipse” premiere . “And I was and still am obsessed with ‘Lord of the Rings.’ I do an annual marathon of the extended editions. It’s hard-core.” While plans for a Strokes biopic have yet to be announced, it seems that Kendrick can at least live out her “Lord of the Rings” fantasies in the soon-to-be-made “Hobbit” flick . “Believe me! I spend many nights wondering that!” she explained. “This is officially my feeler.” So would she be up for playing Bilbo Baggins, originally played by Ian Holm? “Cate Blanchett did it!” she laughed, referring to the actress’ role in “I’m Not There.” “She was Bob Dylan!” Of course the night’s big topic was “Eclipse” and its killer music. “I’m blown away by the soundtrack. And Metric’s one of my favorites,” she said of the band, which has a song on the soundtrack. Luckily Kendrick will have more than one chance to hear them. “Metric does tracks for ‘Scott Pilgrim’ too, so I’m feeling awesome about summer movies.” Check out everything we’ve got on For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . 5 Subpar Directors Who Will Provoke Peter Jackson Into Making The Hobbit Himself

These days, it seems like everyone wants to direct The Hobbit except for Peter Jackson. After Guillermo del Toro left the project, it appeared that Jackson would be a natural fit to take the reins back to his Lord of the Rings franchise, but his reported reluctance has opened the door for unlikely contenders like David Dobkin ( Wedding Crashers ) and Brett Ratner ( X-Men: The Last Stand ). We’re on to this game that the suits from MGM and WB seem to be playing: flirt with completely inappropriate directors who aren’t right for the franchise in the hopes that they’ll bait Jackson into directing the film himself! Here are five more candidates for the job who ought to be leaked to the press immediately:
