Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Channels U.S. Team’s ‘Swagger’ For World Cup Song

Soccer super-fan predicts U.S. will beat Algeria to advance to the next round. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Rivers Cuomo Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo grew up a soccer fan , and his support for the U.S. men’s team is already well-documented. That’s why, though he’d previously written an anthem for the 2006 World Cup team — a group that rather famously underachieved — he decided to pen another one for the 2010 squad. Because this time, things were different. “I tried to make a soccer anthem back in 2006, but it was right after we got knocked out [of the World Cup] in pretty humiliating fashion in the first round, so it came out really kind of sad,” Cuomo told MTV Radio. “And this time around, I was just feeling super optimistic and kind of badass after our performance in the Confederations Cup last year, and especially around this player [Clint] Dempsey, who seems to have this badass attitude and ability to step up and put the ball in the back of the net, even when we’re playing against the giants. So I wrote a song, which hopefully captures some of that confidence and swagger in the face of pretty daunting odds.” The song he ended up writing — the fist-pumping “Represent,” which premiered last week on Weezer’s A.P.E Radio station — most certainly captures that swag. Shoot, in some small way, it probably helped the U.S. team battle to a tie with heavily favored England in its opening match. “After we premiered it, I heard from the U.S. soccer Twitter,” he beamed. “They tweeted at me and said they downloaded the song and put it in the playlist for the pre-game listen, before the U.S./England match.” With that match — and a hard-fought draw with Slovenia — behind them, the U.S. team now stands on the precipice of advancing to the knockout stage of the World Cup, a place the haven’t been since 2002. All they need to do is beat Algeria on Wednesday morning (if they tie, there are a host of other scenarios in which they can still advance, most of which involve stuff like goal differentials ). And, though he’s not exactly the cocky sort, if pressed, Cuomo believes that the U.S. team won’t need to worry about differentials or tiebreakers. The way he sees it, they’ll beat Algeria outright. “I’m not good at making predictions, because you never know what’s going to happen; anything can happen in soccer,” he laughed. “But I guess if I had to bet, I’d say the U.S. is going to win 2-0 and advance to the next round.” What do you think of Rivers’ prediction and his World Cup anthem? Somber Celtics Went Out Like Champions

Filed under: Celtics , Lakers , NBA Playoffs , NBA Finals LOS ANGELES — The celebration and the chaos surrounded them without making a sound. It was quiet in the visitor’s locker room at Staples Center on Thursday night, where one Boston Celtic after another was asked to discuss their own basketball death. They talked about the classic Game 7 in hushed tones and in a painful rotation — Ray Allen , Paul Pierce , Rajon Rondo , Glen Davis , Kevin Garnett — all reliving the Lakers ‘ 83-79 championship survival. The floor was wet over here, too, but it wasn’t because of champagne. “There was a lot of crying in our locker room, a lot of people who care,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. “I don’t think there was a dry eye. A lot of hugs. A lot of people feeling awful. That’s a good thing. You know, that means everybody cared.” They went out like champions from beginning to end, these aging Hall of Famers and relentless reserves who came so close to pulling off such a memorable and unexpected feat. They unplugged the electricity in the building early, jumping out to a 10-point first quarter lead that ensured the tension among most of the 18,997 witnesses would not escape.

NBA Finals Game 7 Live Blog: Questionable Coaching Moves Cost Celtics

-How do we know it’s a big game? Rasheed Wallace didn’t complain after maybe getting fouled. -I too wasn’t thrilled with Kobe Bryant’s start, but seriously Mark Jackson, he’s never played a worse 12 minutes in his career? Obviously Mark wasn’t watching the Phoenix debacle in 2006, when Bryant decided to stop shooting. -I don’t know why the Celtics suddenly have a fascination for posting up Tony Allen, but I recommend they find another fad. -I believe Ron Artest shot that ball from his knee. -The Lakers have made a surge and now trail by just four. Van Gundy praised Doc Rivers for going back to his starters, but I’m not a fan of the decision. It messes up their rhythm, and the Lakers have now come back primarily on the backs of their bench players. Again, you are who you are at this point. Don’t mess it up. -Speaking of Tony Allen, this is the second straight game he is playing minutes with Kobe Bryant not in the game. This is commonly known as ” wasting Tony Allen.” -Rasheed Wallace began the game with two post-ups, converting both. He has since shot two threes, missing both. -Sheed also ran at Ron Artest for no reason there, leaving Lamar Odom all alone for another offensive rebound.

Lakers vs. Celtics – Lose 1, steal 1

Series is now at 2-1 in favor of the Lakers. Lakers lost at home in game 2, but they bounced back and took 1 road game against the Celtics in Game 3, 91-84. This is not like what we have seen in the NBA Finals 2008. And this series is expected to be longer and tougher down to the end. Boston started the early run in the first minutes of the game. Lakers regained their composure and took the lead at 13-12 in the 5:13 mark in the first period. They traded lead 3 times until they tied at 16-16 in the 4:19 mark in the first quarter. Lakers took 5-0 run. Lakers lead at the end of first quarter 21-16. In spite of Kevin Garnett’s ten points and Rajon Rondo’s six in the first quarter, Boston is down 26-17 at the end of the first period of play. Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce got their early two personal fouls, causing Pierce to sit early to stay away from foul trouble. Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett carried their respective teams in the second quarter. Kobe finished the first half with 16 points, grabbed 6 boards. Meanwhile, Kevin Garnett scored 14 ponts and grabbed 5 rebounds. Paul Pierce struggling in the first half, shooting 0 out of 6. He finished the half with 5 points, 1 out of 2 from the three point and hit 2 out of 2 from the free throw line. Lakers moved the ball well. It was a team effort. Kobe did well and so as to Garnett, but the only difference, Lakers’ role players did well of backing up their star player. Boston lacked support on Garnett’s impressive performance. At the half, Lakers led 52-40. In the third, Kobe Bryant missed shots but has made important baskets to keep their lead to 6 points after the quarter. He defended well not only doing his offensive tasks. He ended third quarter with 25 points. Boston reduced the lead to six points after three quarters of play. The score at the end of third quarter was 67-61, in favor of Los Angeles Lakers. Paul Pierce sat after 21 seconds of play in the fourth quarter giving up his fifth personal foul. Even though Pierce is not on the floor, Boston managed to come back and reduced the deficit to only one, 67-68 in the 9:46 mark. Derek Fisher who only scored five points in the first three quarters made his presence felt as the veteran made his shots when the Lakers needed him. Fisher’s defense was terrific, but his offense saved the day, as he scored 11 of his 16 in the final quarter. “Derek Fisher was the difference in the game,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. “He’s just a gutty, gritty player. Fisher basically took the game over.” “We didn’t doubt our ability to win here, even though we hadn’t done it in the playoffs,” Derek Fisher said. “We understand that in order to be the best, you have to win wherever, whenever.” More Info.. Weezer Debut ‘Unofficial’ World Cup Song, ‘Represent’

Song is Rivers Cuomo’s latest ode to soccer. By James Montgomery Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Photo: Chris Weeks/ WireImage The 2010 FIFA World Cup is officially under way, and even though the U.S. Men’s team doesn’t take the field until Saturday’s showdown with England, Weezer have already released the “unofficial” theme song for the Stars and Stripes, a song called “Represent.” Penned by avowed soccer nut Rivers Cuomo, the band debuted the song on their A.P.E. Radio station on Friday at 12pm ET. All muscled-up power-chords, pounding drums and delightfully over-the-top keyboards, “Represent” is positively begging to be included in a sports montage of some sorts (wait — it already has! ), and features Cuomo belting out lines like “I didn’t get in this position just by happenstance/ I work my bones beyond my limit just to have half a chance,” and “That is how you play the game! It matters than you can take the pain!” He also calls himself “the Wizard” at one point. “Represent” will be available as a free download on iTunes in the U.S. for one week, starting at midnight Friday. Cuomo, who is pals with U.S. Men’s team member Landon Donovan, also wrote a song for the team during the 2006 World Cup, a tune he originally called “Our Time Will Come” (but would eventually be retitled “My Day Is Coming” when it surfaced on his 2008 album Alone II: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo ). He also has attended several World Cup matches, and famously made a video for the song “Lover in the Snow,” which featured him training for — and scoring a goal in — Mia Hamm’s Celebrity Soccer Challenge. What do you think of Weezer’s unofficial World Cup anthem? What do you think of the other World Cup songs? Let us know in the comments below — and don’t miss MTV News’ World Cup of Rock! It's happened—someone has finally made an honest man of Howard Stern. After a lengthy engagement, the Sirius Satellite shock jock has taken the marital plunge with longtime girlfriend Beth Ostrosky, tying the knot in an A-list private event at New York City's famed Le Cirque restaurant Friday night. Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos topped the guest list, with Consuelos, who became an ordained minister over the summer, performing the ceremony. Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Adam Carolla, Barbara Walters, Billy Joel and wife Katie Lee, Joan Rivers, Stern's radio cohosts Robin Quivers and Artie Lang, Chevy Chase, Donald and Melania Trump and John Stamos were among the event's 180 esteemed attendees. Consuelos wasn't the only one pulling double duty: Joel sang a song and Chase delivered an X-rated toast following the ceremony. Ostrosky donned a Marquesa wedding dress for the big day, which has been something of a long time coming. The 54-year-old radio personality popped the question to the 36-year-old model-actress on Valentine's Day 2007. But as far back as 2006, Stern announced on his radio show that he and Ostrosky had already tied the knot, only to say later that it was a prank. On Aug. 23, a family celebration at the couple's Hamptons home led some press to assume that the duo had quietly taken their trip down the aisle, though Ostrosky later revealed it was simply a celebration of their impending nuptials. I's the first marriage for Ostrosky and the second for Stern, who split from first wife Alison in 2000. For years after, he famously vowed he would never marry again, a flip-flop promise he explained away during a trip to the Late Show With David Letterman earlier this year. “I'm a hypocritical liar, as you know,” Stern said. “Things change, love happens, love blossoms.” This Content is Compiled by [ Admin > DesiHotMasala.Com ] If you want these Emails/Articles in your Inbox Daily, then click the below link and subscribe.
