Brooks: ‘Tragedy’ If Republicans Reject More Government, Higher Taxes

If a RINO is a Republican In Name Only, let’s coin a new acronym for David Brooks: RINYTO: Republican In New York Times Only.  For only in the Gray Lady’s bailiwick could Brooks be considered much of a Republican. Take his current column in the Times.  Brooks warns Republicans on the verge of regaining power that it would be nothing short of a “tragedy” if they were to oppose . . . more government and higher taxes. Excerpt [emphasis added]: If the current Republican Party regards every new bit of government action as a step on the road to serfdom , then the party will be taking this long, mainstream American tradition and exiling it from the G.O.P. That will be a political tragedy. There are millions of voters who, while alarmed by the Democrats’ lavish spending, still look to government to play some positive role. They fled the G.O.P. after the government shutdown of 1995, and they would do so again. It would be a fiscal tragedy. Over the next decade there will have to be spending cuts and tax increases. If Republicans decide that even the smallest tax increases put us on the road to serfdom , then there will never be a deal, and the country will careen toward bankruptcy. Brooks apparently believes we don’t have enough government and that taxes are too low.  I’d say that makes him a Republican only in the rarefied air of 8th Ave. between 40th & 41st streets.

David Suzuki: Our Obsession With Private Automobiles is Unsustainable

bitefight via Torontoist Quote of the Day from David Suzuki in the Georgia Strait: Technological developments [such as electric cars etc.] are welcome, but maybe it’s time we started rethinking our car culture as whole. The average car in North America carries 1.5 people, which means that most cars on the road only have a driver in them. Is it really efficient to use more than 1,000 kilograms of metal to transport 100 kilograms of huma… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Because He Deserrrrrrrves It: Mel Gibson in Car Crash

Too soon? Sorry. At least I didn’t write, “Mel Gibson made his car wanna smoooooke last night after driving it into a rocky hillside on Malibu Canyon Drive.” Ugh. OK, well, he wasn’t injured! And cops today say that while the troubled Oscar-winner maintains he doesn’t know how he drove his Maserati off the road (he declined to “give a firm ‘yes’ or ‘no'” when asked if he fell asleep at the wheel), alcohol is not suspected and charges will not be filed. Huh? WHAT ? Sorry, forget it. [ TMZ ]

Jonas Brothers Promise Old And New JoBros Hits On Summer Tour

‘I think from the minute you walk in to when the last note is played, it’ll be a full night of music,’ Kevin teased. By Jocelyn Vena Jonas Brothers Photo: MTV News CHICAGO — While the Jonas Brothers will be joined by Demi Lovato and a number of their “Camp Rock 2” pals for their big tour, which kicks off Saturday outside Chicago, the guys want their fans to know that this is still very much a JoBros tour. And fans will get a bonus treat, thanks to all the special guests. “When you’re coming in to see the show, I think from the minute you walk in to when the last note is played, it’ll be a full night of music and entertainment,” Kevin told MTV News during a break from rehearsals at the First Midland Bank Amphitheatre. “And we have so many friends out on the road and so many things to be able to integrate into our show.” But fans of Jonas hits like “Lovebug” and “SOS” shouldn’t fret; the guys have been making sure their own songs are getting plenty of airtime during the show. “We are doing a Jonas Brothers set, and it’s actually a lot,” Kevin added. He said fans will even be treated to some oldies but goodies. “We’re playing a lot of Jonas Brothers songs, and we’re integrating ‘Camp Rock’ and ‘JONAS L.A.’ songs [and] songs from our past. We’re really excited.” Not only should fans be excited to catch the JoBros and their pals onstage, but the show also means the guys have a lot more friends to hang out with on the road. “It’s been a lot of fun,” Joe said. “We had a great time shooting the movie with those guys, so to kind of be backstage, there’s a lot of people on this tour. It’s cool for us to hang out with them all the time.” Earlier that day at a news conference at the House of Blues , the guys said that if they did find any downtime at all, they had a few places they like to hang out in Chi-Town. “Millennium Park is always a lot of fun. On my tour back in January, I took a trip up there,” Nick said. “Also, just walking the riverfront is amazing. It’s such a beautiful city. The fans here are some of the best in the world, I think.” Will you be checking the Jonas Brothers out on tour? Let us know in the comments! Stay tuned to MTVNews.com this weekend for our coverage of the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato’s tour kickoff! Related Artists Jonas Brothers

Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen Added To ‘On The Road’ Cast

Kirsten Dunst and Kristen Stewart also star in the film based on Jack Kerouac’s novel. By Adam Rosenberg Amy Adams Photo: Ethan Miller/ WireImage And the Beat goes on. Two more have joined the cast of director Walter Salles’ upcoming adaptation of the Jack Kerouac novel “On the Road,” which already counts Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kirsten Dunst and Kristen Stewart among its stars. Viggo Mortensen and Amy Adams have signed on to play the husband and wife couple Old Bull Lee and Jane, according to Deadline New York . Both drug abusers, Sal (Riley) encounters the Lees later in his story and, for all their faults, sees in them the sort of connection that he is looking for in his own sought-after relationship. For those who are unfamiliar with the novel’s background, Kerouac’s writings are a largely autobiographical account of his journeys around the country, though specific names have been changed. Old Bull Lee and his wife, Jane, are believed to be noted author William S. Burroughs and his common-law wife Joan Vollmer. Burroughs accidentally shot and killed Vollmer in 1951, an incident he initially said stemmed from a William Tell act gone wrong. Adams will next appear in David O. Russell’s “The Fighter” alongside Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. And “On the Road” isn’t her only project with a connection to counterculture: “Twilight” producer Wyck Godfrey revealed a few weeks ago that she is also attached to star in a Janis Joplin biopic. For Mortensen, this marks the second “Road” movie in a short period of time. He starred opposite Kodi Smit-McPhee (“Let Me In”) in last year’s adaptation of the post-apocalyptic Cormac McCarthy novel “The Road.” He’ll next star with Michael Fassbender and Keira Knightley in director David Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method” as the famed psychotherapist Sigmund Freud. Check out everything we’ve got on “On the Road.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
