Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law Go ‘Bigger’ In ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’

We caught up with the ‘Game of Shadows’ stars and director Guy Ritchie on London set of the detective sequel. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law Photo: MTV News It’s one thing to breathe new life into a literary icon. Robert Downey Jr. , Jude Law and director Guy Ritchie did that two years ago with “Sherlock Holmes,” a quasi-Steampunk take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective. The real challenge comes when you have to do it again. The trio are set to give it another go on December 16, when the sequel, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” hits theaters. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz traveled all the way to the London set of the film to talk to Downey, Law and Ritchie about recreating the magic of the first film and just why Holmes and Watson make for such compelling characters. We also discovered there was consensus among the three men about the approach for this film: bigger. “I’m too close to be objective about this now, but originally when we were constructing this conceptually, we just wanted to make it bigger,” Ritchie said. “We wanted to make it bigger and better, and I’m not sure if you can be more eloquent than that.” Ritchie told us that with the first movie out of the way, he “knows the identity” of the films better than ever and can take everything to the next level. “I supposed I stuck my toe in the water creatively on the last one. I’m probably a little bit more confident about who these guys are,” he said. In “Game of Shadows,” the action jumps into the future a bit, taking place more than a few months after the first film. Watson has moved out of 221 Baker Street, and Holmes is in tough shape and deeply obsessed with one of literature’s greatest villains, Professor James Moriarty, played in the new film by Jared Harris . No reimagining of Holmes would be complete without a take on his arch-nemesis, and Ritchie said that Harris is up to the task. “I’m not saying this because it’s what directors are supposed to say, but I do believe Jared is a fantastic Moriarty, and you are dealing with arguably the most infamous villain in the history of literature, so it’s no mean feat.” For the two heroes of the story, Downey and Law said they could endlessly revisit Holmes and Watson. Asked why, Downey got straight to the point. “The money and the merch!” he laughed Taking a more serious note, Law explained that it’s the chemistry between the two characters that will always be fascinating. “They’re just interesting. They’re very, very interesting. The dynamic is always fresh,” Law said. The pair is so dynamic, in fact, that it’s often hard to tell what kind of reaction a scene between them will elicit. “We’ve done stuff which we’re cracking up over and we think is so funny, and we watch it back over and in fact, it’s very touching,” Law said. “We think, ‘Where did that come from?’ And vice versa, we’ll do stuff we’re desperately trying to make this heartfelt moment, and it’s nothing short of broad and really funny.” “It’s a discovery process,” Downey agreed. Photo: Does Scarlett Johansson Look Like Our Sexiest Movie Alien Yet?

Over the course of her career, Scarlett Johansson has played a sexy Dutch muse, a sexy clone, a sexy journalism student, a sexy Boleyn sister and a sexy, spandex-clad Roman spy. (She is so sexy that David Fincher did not cast her in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for fear that audiences wouldn’t be able “to wait for her to take her clothes off.”) So it’s not surprising that in Jonathan Glazer’s upcoming film Under The Skin , the bombshell doesn’t just play an alien — she plays an alien who uses a voluptuous human body to ensnare male prey. Take a look at the first photo of Johansson in character to see how she stacks up against cinema’s other most titillating extraterrestrials.

Happy 64th Birthday, Kevin Kline! What’s His Best Onscreen Moment?

This is a special Monday, dears, because the illustrious Kevin Kline turns 64 today. The man who lit up The Big Chill before going on to garner an Academy Award for A Fish Called Wanda is that rare leading man who seems perfectly at home in bizarre character roles. I’m trembling just thinking of my favorite Kevin Kline scene. Can you guess it? Will I be plundering The Ice Storm ? In & Out ? Dave ? Or the gritty saloon drama Wild, Wild West ?

‘Sherlock Holmes 2’ Trailer Reveals Rachel McAdams, Moriarty

‘A Game of Shadows’ appears to pick up where the action-packed, bromantic original began. By Kara Warner Robert Downey Jr. in “Sherlock Holmes 2” Photo: Warner Bros As far as sensational, buzzworthy trailers go, Robert Downey Jr. is on a roll. He’s been a prominent fixture in two of the most talked-about teasers from two of the most anticipated films. The first trailer is for “The Avengers,” which Marvel and Disney rolled out last week, and the second is for Guy Ritchie’s bromantic “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which hit the Interwebs on Wednesday (October 19). This second trailer is all about upping the action and mystery. It opens with the voice of new leading lady Sim, played by Noomi Rapace. “What do you see?” she asks Dr. Holmes (Downey Jr.), to which he replies “Everything,” as we are then shown quick cuts of what are likely pieces of the second film’s big mystery. There are dancing couples in a glamorous ballroom (including Sim and Holmes) at some grand party, a game of chess, a possible crime scene with a pile of wreckage in the center, bullet holes in the walls, cocked pistols and — gasp! A shot of Rachel McAdams’ shifty lady thief Irene Adler walking somewhere with haste and some sort of precious parcel. The last shot in the opening montage is a glimpse at Jared Harris as evil-ish Moriarty looking out from behind super-secret spy glasses (not really, he’s just holding a lorgnette — those fancy glasses people use at the opera). “That is my curse,” Holmes says, a bookend to our introductory 20 seconds or so, before Ritchie kicks the action into high gear and packs the remaining two minutes and seven seconds with explosions, running, shooting, etc. — basically, Holmes and Watson (Jude Law) are up to their old tricks. “Oh, how I’ve missed you, Holmes,” Watson says to his friend. “Have you? I’ve barely noticed your absence,” Holmes answers back in a passive-aggressive tone, pretending not to have missed his best friend. This brief exchange is followed by more quick cuts of exotic locations and Watson’s wedding and an introduction to bad guy Moriarty. “What are we up against here?” Watson asks Holmes. “The most formidable criminal mind in Europe,” Holmes says. “Professor James Moriarty,” Watson says, reading his name from Holmes’ notes somewhere. “If we can stop him, we can prevent the collapse of Western civilization,” Holmes adds dramatically, before an explosion erupts in the background. “No pressure.” This is followed by more running, bullets flying, a slow-motion cat-and-mouse chase in the snow, banter with lady Sim, as well as a few Holmes and Watson moments, including one in which the former suddenly appears dressed in drag. “What?” Watson says when he encounters Holmes as a lady. “I agree it’s not my best disguise,” Holmes counters. Finally there are more quick cuts of action, much of which looks to be set on a moving train that later explodes, along with a brief but passionate kiss between former lovers Holmes and Adler. Robert Downey Jr. Calls for Forgiveness of Mel Gibson

Robert Downey Jr. was honored at the American Cinematheque Awards last night, as numerous colleagues and friends made speeches in honor of the Oscar nominee and acknowledged the substance abuse-laden journey he took to arrive at the top of Hollywood. But when it came time to take the stage himself, Downey shifted the focus to the man who introduced him: Mel Gibson. “Mel and I have the same lawyer, same publicist and same shrink,” Downey said of his Air America co-star. “I couldn’t get hired and he cast me. He said if I accepted responsibility – he called it hugging the cactus – long enough my life would take meaning and if he helped me I would help the next guy. But it was not reasonable to assume the next guy would be him.” Speaking about Gibson – whose anti-Semitic and anti-Oksana Grigorieva tirades have been made very public over the recent years – The Avengers star added: “Unless you are without sin, and if you are you are in the wrong f-ckin industry, you should forgive him and let him work.” Do you agree, readers? Should we forgive Mel Gibson?

‘Avengers’ Team Is ‘The Definition Of Family’

‘Everybody is just an arm of the octopus,’ Robert Downey Jr., tells Entertainment Weekly. By Kara Warner Avengers on the cover of Entertainment Weekly Photo: Entertainment Weekly For the most dedicated “Avengers” fans who’ve been paying attention to every story printed, photo leaked or fan video uploaded to YouTube, it’s safe to say that nearly everything we know about the Joss Whedon-helmed superhero epic is pretty awesome. Entertainment Weekly has assembled the star-studded cast on the cover of this week’s issue, along with an accompanying cover story that offers yet another excitement-inducing glimpse into the makings of what could be next year’s biggest movie. Whedon told the mag that he fully understands the amount of pressure he’s under to deliver but that he has to allow himself room for error. “Every day I make some boneheaded mistake and I go, ‘Really? Wow. So no learning curve, huh?’ There is a weird element of: They handed me one of the biggest movies of all time, and I’m making it up as I go.” As far as the A-listers in the cast go, there have been learning curves on their end as well, like Mark Ruffalo feeling anxious about taking over the Hulk from predecessor Edward Norton. “Norton and I are friends, and he was like, ‘You’ve gotta do it, buddy.’ He basically bequeathed it to me,” Ruffalo said. “It was very cool and very generous of him.” Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. revealed that he had to come to terms with the “sharing is caring” aspect of the ensemble film, versus pushing for his Tony Stark to be the centerpiece like in his “Iron Man” movies. “I said [to Whedon], ‘I don’t know what you’re thinking, but Tony needs to drive this thing.’ He was like, ‘OK, let’s try that.’ We tried it, and it didn’t work,” Downey said. “Because this is a different sort of thing. Everybody is just an arm of the octopus.” That “octopus” — i.e. the ensemble cast that consists of Ruffalo’s Incredible Hulk, Downey’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Chris Evans’ Captain America, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow — has become one big happy family, according to all parties involved. “Joss describes it as the definition of family,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said. “These are people who have no business being together, but they are thrust together and need to make the best of it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Avengers.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Ricky Gervais Says the Golden Globes — and the Oscars — Want Him Again

Ricky Gervais — the troublemaking Golden Globes host who made callous, hilariously truthful jokes about such esteemed statesmen as Hugh Hefner, Tim Allen, and Robert Downey Jr. during his last hosting gig — claims he’s been asked back to the ceremony for a third straight year. And the Oscars, too. That’s fantastic. But is Gervais willing to take up the offers? The giggling imp explains.
