The most striking observation made during a recent chat with Shiloh Fernandez is that the 26-year-old is a gentle and thoughtful soul in person — sincere, open, and regretful of comments he made recently about his run-in with Kristen Stewart years ago when reading for the role of Edward Cullen in Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight . Fernandez may not have been meant to play the famous sparkling vampire, but he got another shot at working with Hardwicke when she cast him as the village bad boy in Red Riding Hood , the first romantic lead role in his young career to date. (Plus, he’s an avid Movieline reader. So, you know — bonus points!)
RPattz will debut an exclusive ‘Water for Elephants’ clip and answer fan questions live on Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Larry Carroll Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson on the set of “Twilight” in 2008 Photo: MTV News It was early April 2008, and “Twilight” hadn’t yet become a global box-office phenomenon and set off an epidemic of pop-culture copycats seeking to suck up some of the franchise’s supernatural lifeblood. Back then, when Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were just two up-and-coming actors making a movie for an independent studio, MTV News traveled to the film’s Portland, Oregon, set to find out just what was happening with this gothic-tinged love story everyone seemed to be buzzing about. The duo were alternately shy and unguarded, jokey and awkward, and generally far different than they are these days, with the press invading every aspect of their personal and professional lives. That’s why, even years later, our first-ever “Twilight” interview remains one of our favorite RPattz moments. And as we count down the days until “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” airs next Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET, we hauled the footage from our vaults. “Kristen’s the best actress of her generation, and that’s why I wanted to do this movie. I don’t know why she is, but she’s better than everyone else,” Pattinson told us, breaking out into laughter as he kept the attention on his co-star and away from himself. “You don’t want me to talk about you?” Stewart asked, before doing just that. “I think he’s really handsome.” Throughout the interview, they exchanged knowing glances, laughed at themselves and each other, and paused for long periods as they searched for the right word or anecdote. This was the “Twilight” stars, pre-media training, and it’s utterly endearing. Can you imagine them now so openly discussing what it’s like to smooch on camera? “His teeth are pretty sharp,” Stewart laughed. “It’s great. I like it.” “Every time, I just try to kill her,” Pattinson added. “And [Bella] likes it,” Stewart said. “She’s a total sadomasochist, if you think about it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Water for Elephants.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Considering the modest budgets of the first three films in the Twilight “saga” (gag), it’s a bit surprising to see just how much Summit Entertainment spent on the two parts of Breaking Dawn . The vampire baby-filled split-finale cost the studio some $263 million, a nearly $200 million increase from Eclipse . To be fair, Summit anticipates both films clearing $1 billion in combined revenues, so money well spent. Of course, where it was spent remains a mystery. Some of those extra dollars can be attributed to the reported $25 million salaries of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. The rest? Hey, glitter isn’t cheap… [ Wrap ]
Robert Pattinson leaves Edward Cullen far behind in Water for Elephants . In this April release, based on a best-selling novel by the same name, the Twilight Saga star portrays a student who runs away from home after his parents die. In search of a new life, he stumbles upon a traveling circus a beautiful woman (Reese Witherspoon) who works there. The problem? She’s the wife of the ruthless circus owner (Christoph Waltz). Pattinson will be acting opposite a pair of Academy Award winners (and an elephant!) in the drama, one of whom has referred to Rob as really nice and handsome . Think he can match their talent? See for yourself in the following, extended trailer: Water for Elephants Movie Trailer
‘Twilight’ star says ‘the media will lose interest’ in his rumored relationship with Stewart when the series ends. By Jocelyn Vena Robert Pattinson on the April 2011 cover of Vanity Fair Photo: Annie Leibovitz / Conde Nast Sure, he graces the cover of Vanity Fair with an alligator, but it’s what Robert Pattinson says inside the magazine that will have his fans drooling. The “Water for Elephants” star, who normally doesn’t say much about Kristen Stewart, opens up about his “Twilight” co-star and rumored girlfriend in the new issue, which hits newsstands March 3. “Kristen is very focused on being an actress,” Pattinson said. “I mean, that’s what she is — she’s an actress. Whereas I — I just don’t really know.” Pattinson also admits that he has admired Stewart for a long time. “She’s cool. Even before I knew her, I thought she was a really good actress. Like, I saw ‘Into the Wild,’ and I thought she was really good in that. I still think there are very few girls in her class that are as good as she is.” He added that all the speculation about their relationship has been “traumatic.” “When this is over,” Pattinson adds of the “Twilight” series, “the media will lose interest [in the relationship]. There’ll be nothing to say. It won’t fit into a headline anymore. It won’t fit into a template.” Pattinson also had some kind words for currently embattled TV star Charlie Sheen, saying he admired the actor’s “little escapades,” adding, “I like crazy people who don’t give a f—. … I’ve just kind of stopped doing everything. I never change the channel in my trailer. I just watch reruns of ‘House of Payne’ and ‘Two and a Half Men.’ I love ‘Cops’ — I think it’s my favorite TV show. … God, I sound like such a loser.” Aside from all the talk about his Hollywood peers, the star also waxed sentimental about his time as Edward Cullen in “Twilight.” “I can’t really understand it even now,” he said of the mania. “It does have an angle which is attached to something quite primal in girls. I guess people want it to define them, like, ‘I’m a “Twilight” fan.’ … I think people really just like being part of a crowd. There’s something just tremendously exciting about hyping yourself up to that level.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
