‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Trailer: Some Burning Questions

What’s with Bruce Wayne’s cane, and did Catwoman steal Mrs. Wayne’s pearls? By Kevin P. Sullivan Christian Bale in the new “Dark Knight Rises” trailer Photo: Warner Bros. If you’re able to tear yourself away from the new theatrical trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises,” you should be applauded. The two-minute trailer packs so much goodness in that it can be hard to focus on anything else. Other fans like you have already begun to post detailed trailer analyses and lists of supposed Easter eggs trying to unlock every secret the new preview holds. We have a few questions of our own that need answering, so here is our list of the burning questions from the “Dark Knight Rises” theatrical trailer. What’s with the cane? The trailer doesn’t come right out and say it, but it doesn’t take much scrutinizing to see that Bruce Wayne walks with a cane in two scenes. Early in the trailer, you can see Bruce and his cane reflected in the cloche and from the side as he passes the camera. He also appears to be favoring one side during the masquerade scenes with Selina Kyle and Miranda Tate. It’s hard to imagine Nolan choosing to feature Bane as the main villain and neglecting to make reference to the act he’s most famous for, breaking Batman’s back. The cane could signal some manifestation of the moment from “Knightfall.” Are there two Robin references in the trailer? The blogosphere blew up Monday with theories that the stadium scene features two references to the Boy Wonder, thus confirming his presence in the movie, but both have been sufficiently debunked. Whether you noticed the first depended on whether you follow the NFL. When fans saw that the player who outruns the earthquake was named “Ward,” they had either two reactions: “Oh hey, that’s Hines Ward, wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers,” or “I have no idea who Hines Ward is, so that’s a reference to Robin’s status as Batman’s ward!” The other reference was most likely the work of a crafty background actor. Among the fans in the stadium, one person held up a large “R” that spelled out the team name “Rogues.” Eagle-eyed viewers noticed that the “R” resembles the stylized one used for the Robin logo, but as Empire pointed out, most of the 10,000 extras for that scene brought their own props to set. Did Catwoman steal Mrs. Wayne’s pearls? Reddit user “mpty” noticed something interesting while rewatching “Batman Begins.” The pearls Selina Kyle dons in the trailer resemble the set Thomas Wayne shows young Bruce in the original movie. This could be the first we see of Catwoman’s famous hobby, burglary. So much of her portrayal in the trailer focuses on her advocacy for the 99 percent. This may be the first hint at the other side of Ms. Kyle. Is there a flashback to “Batman Begins”-era Bruce Wayne? Christian Bale speaks his only line in the trailer while wearing clothes and sporting a beard that haven’t been around since his early days as a world traveler. He looks very similar to how he did during his training with the League of Shadows. We know the last film in the trilogy doubles back to cover some territory from the first movie; perhaps we’re seeing that here. Nicole Scherzinger To Guest-Star On ‘How I Met Your Mother’

The Pussycat Doll and ‘Dancing With the Stars’ champ will appear on the show in November. By Jocelyn Vena Nicole Scherzinger Photo: Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic Nicole Scherzinger is set to guest-star on the hit CBS show “How I Met Your Mother.” EW.com reports that the lead Pussycat Doll and “Dancing With the Stars” winner will play a vital part in telling the story of Robin’s (played by Cobie Smulders) days as a Canadian pop star, when she was known as Robin Sparkle. “It’s going to be a satisfying third chapter in the Robin Sparkles trilogy,” executive producer Craig Thomas said. “It’s a prequel to both ‘Let’s Go to the Mall’ and ‘Sandcastles in the Sand.’ ” Scherzinger will play Robin’s former pal, Jessica Glitter, who now hosts a Canadian talk show alongside former “Growing Pains” star Alan Thicke. “It’s the origin story of Robin Sparkles,” executive producer Carter Bays said. “You see where she came from.” The episode, titled “Glitter,” will air this November during sweeps. Last season a number of familiar faces popped up on “How I Met Your Mother,” including Jennifer Lopez and Carrie Underwood. In past seasons, everyone from Britney Spears to “Hills” stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have appeared on the sitcom. Scherzinger burned up television screens last season on “Dancing With the Stars,” where she shimmied her way to winning the mirror-ball trophy. Following a recent shakeup in the band, she’s also currently hard at work on the next Pussycat Dolls album and worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber on his new play, “Love Never Dies,” a sequel to “The Phantom of the Opera.” Aside from taping her upcoming appearance on “How I Met Your Mother” and all her other projects, Scherzinger has been busy writing tons of music. “I don’t know if I’m gonna put [the new music out] under my name yet or if it’s going to be perfect for the Dolls,” she said. “It doesn’t matter. I just want to make great music for the fans. It’s going to be popular music, but I’m definitely going with a more rock, soul-inspired sound.” Related Artists Nicole Scherzinger

Movie Review: Robin Hood

When Russell Crowe teamed up with director Ridley Scott in 2000, few could’ve known they’d give birth to a film now cited as one of the greatest of the decade. Somehow Gladiator’s sheer corniness was overlooked in favour of its spectacle to become a huge hit and a runaway bestseller in the early DVD market. As you would imagine given those involved, ‘Robin Hood’ is epic in every sense- sweeping landscapes, rousing score and a bum-numbing 2 hour 20 minute running time. There are things that stop it from being a true classic- it can be slow in places, and it’s more than slightly inspired by ‘Braveheart’ and the ‘other’ Scott/Crowe epic. However, for everything that makes you roll your eyes there’s another that makes you go ‘wow’. The look is fantastic, and although there are long breaks between battle scenes they are definitely worth the wait, especially the awesome climax on the beach. Credit also to the writers for not making this a typical story of the outlaw, more an origin piece dealing with his time in the army and the aftermath of King John’s ascension. The film takes you back to the 12th Century and follows Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe) on a journey to return the sword of dying knight Robert Loxley to his father, Sir Walter Loxley in Nottingham. Russell Crowe plays a more rugged Robin than we have seen before, but unfortunately his accent seems as confused as his character’s history. He is joined on the journey back from France by Little John (Kevin Durand), Will Scarlet (Scott Grimes) and Allan A’Dayle (Alan Doyle), a comedic trio, portrayed as a Welsh man, English man and Irish man, bringing humour to their journey. Cate Blanchett played a strong willed Marion Loxley, shrugging off the damsel in distress stereotype, making Robin work to win her love in a different adaptation of the romantic side of the story. Overall, the film was entertaining but didn’t quite match up to the hype. It was however, a completely new, grittier take on the Robin Hood legend compared to the ‘camp’ efforts of the past. It was missing much of the robbing the rich to feed the poor that might be expected, but this was clearly a ‘beginning’ film setting out how Robin Longstride became Robin Hood. There’s flaws, certainly, but there’s also a lot to like about this film. Reliable leads, a decent script and a cracking final sequence means that while you may not be quoting it for years to come, it will certainly give you a memorable evening. ‘Robin Hood’: Ye Olde Bait-And-Switch, By Kurt Loder

Russell Crowe in search of Sherwood Forest. By Kurt Loder Russell Crowe in “Robin Hood” Photo: Universal Pictures Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood” is brilliant, in a way. Faced with the fact that filmmakers have been cranking out pictures about the scalawag of Sherwood Forest for more than a hundred years now, the director and his writers must have pondered at length how to put a unique spin on the oft-told tale. Their brainstorm: Don’t tell it. Scott’s movie, very oddily, is actually a prequel — a sort of origin story for a better Robin Hood movie that doesn’t exist. Maybe brilliant isn’t the word. So Robin Hood fans hoping for some of the dash and wit of the classic films that starred Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn should set their expectation meters to Off. The simple pleasure of a few acrobatic hours with Robin and his Merry Men — and the Sheriff of Nottingham, chubby Friar Tuck, evil Prince John and the lovely Maid Marion — is not forthcoming. True, there is a Sheriff of Nottingham loitering around the edges of the action; and also some men called Little John, Will Scarlet and Allan A’Dayle, although they’re not very merry. Mark Addy’s mead-sipping Friar Tuck is a fairly lively character, but Prince John, played here by Oscar Isaac, is an unthreatening buffoon, and Marion, played by Cate Blanchett, is hardly the elegant beauty of lore — at one point we get a closeup of her washing clots of mud off her bare feet. Russell Crowe, in his fifth collaboration with Scott, dispenses with Robin’s traditional tights and feathered cap, which is not a great loss; but he also dispenses with the character’s traditional high spirits, which is. In fact, the Robin cobbled together by writers Brian Helgeland, Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris isn’t even the jaunty rogue nobleman of earlier versions of the story; here, he’s just a glum yeoman called Robin Longstride, a loyal archer in the service of good King Richard the Lionheart (Danny Huston). As the movie opens, in 1199, Richard and his weary men are returning from the latest Crusade in the Holy Lands. They’re plundering their way through France en route to England, where Richard’s conniving brother, Prince John, has his eye on the royal crown. John is planning to dump his current princess and marry sultry young Isabella of Angoul
