Helen Mirren Curvy At Cannes

Helen Mirren at the opening ceremony of 63rd Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of Robin Hood. The Dame may be 64-years-old but she is not afraid to show off her curves, and she shouldn’t be, in a figure-hugging asymmetrical black gown.

What’s On: The Best Tyramail of All

Tonight America’s Top Next Model concludes its 14th cycle and finally makes a decent clothes-wearer of one lucky girl. Sharlto Copley’s Prosthetic Snit Fit

Why was Sharlto Copley replaced by Timothy Olyphant in DJ Caruso’s I Am Number Four ? Variety says “scheduling conflicts,” but FilmDrunk has the much more fun behind-the-scenes story , where Caruso wouldn’t let Copley wear a prosthetic nose and Spock ears to play the film’s inconspicuous, human-looking alien. For the District 9 alum, it’s apparently alien-human hybrids or bust! [ FilmDrunk via Slashfilm ]

The Hills Reality Check: Heidi and Spencer Should Be Arrested For Hosting a Children’s Birthday Party

If you’re an MTV reality star, you can throw over-the-top birthday parties for whomever you want; why, just last night, Heidi threw an a lavish soiree for a seven-year-old of no blood relation to her! For Heidi, the fete was an excuse to crowd her home with creatures who could not judge her: an elephant, children with no understanding of plastic surgery or mental illness, and clowns. But for the rest of the world watching last night’s episode, “Elephant in the Room,” the birthday soiree was just another depressing glimpse into Heidi’s fun house of delusions. Which moments rang truest and falsest?

REVIEW: Ugly, Interminable Robin Hood Steals From Audiences

In days of yore, the myth of Robin Hood was embodied by brave and noble men: Douglas Fairbanks outwitting the king’s thugs by sliding down the length of a slippery medieval brocade curtain; Errol Flynn striding jauntily into a great hall with a dead stag draped around his shoulders like a royal’s stole. But, as Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood suggests, those are heroes from a lost age. Today’s Robin Hood is far more complex, a tortured soul suffering from repressed-memory syndrome, a freedom fighter whose perpetual scowl speaks of a highly attuned sense of justice. Today’s Robin Hood is the spirit of freedom disguised as a grumpy gus in a leather jerkin, and he carries something far heavier than legend — or even Errol Flynn’s stag carcass — on his shoulders: a backstory.

Ridley Scott Didn’t Treat Robin Hood Like A ‘Myth’

‘I really believe he existed,’ director says of Russell Crowe’s character. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Todd Gilchrist Ridley Scott Photo: MTV News Between Monty Python’s send-up, Kevin Costner’s heartthrob-centric take and Mel Brooks’ farce, the mythic character of Robin Hood hasn’t fared very well in pop culture these last few decades. Ridley Scott isn’t a fan of such depictions either, which is why he was dead-set on reinventing the character for a 21st-century audience in his upcoming “Robin Hood.” “I never liked the green tights,” he told MTV News. “I didn’t like the feather in the hat. It didn’t work for me. Even as a kid, it was not my idea of Robin Hood.” His of idea of Robin Hood, rather, has more in common with the main character of “Gladiator,” a sharp-witted, tough-minded badass who knows how to handle his weaponry. No surprise there, as Scott directed that Oscar-winning flick and recruited star Russell Crowe to play the title role in “Robin Hood” (out Friday). They both knew exactly the approach they wanted to take, and it had nothing to do with Costner’s 1991 version of the folkloric hero. “Kevin Costner’s was fun, leaning more heavily on the clowning of Robin Hood,” Scott explained. “On this one, I wanted to go more real, because I really believe he existed. The ones to date always treated Robin Hood like a myth, part of a fairy story.” Scott and his screenwriters sought to ground the story in verifiable history, choosing to spin a plotline that began in the late 12th century and then proceeded through a time when the English kingdom was bankrupt and reeling from the reign of a king who became known as Bad King John. Once they plopped Robin Hood into the center of social and economic upheaval, the story gained an air of truthfulness and gravity missing from other imaginings of the character. It also gained an Oscar-winning actor as its lead. “I just wouldn’t have done it if it were a conventional take,” Crowe told us. “There’s no need for anyone in the world to see that series of clich
