Palm Springs International Film Festival Unveils 2013 Winners

The 24th Palm Springs International Film Festival capped off its 12-day event Sunday at a local restaurant naming this year’s winners. The occasion celebrated some of the fest’s 182 films in a setting that contrasts from its glittering awards show that the festival bills as a launching point to Awards Season. That event saw the likes of Ben Affleck , Sally Field , Jessica Chastain , Richard Gere , Naomi Watts , Bradley Cooper , Helen Mirren and more being honored by some of the festival’s well-heeled members. [ Related: ‘Les Misérables”s Tom Hooper Talks Anne Hathaway’s ‘Dark Place’ In Palm Springs ] But film prizes were handed out as the festival closed out its final weekend, with Wayne Blair’s The Sapphires taking the Best Narrative Feature award among Audience winners. Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey by Ramona Diaz won the Audience nod in the Documentary category. The film centers on “the dilemma the rock band Journey faces to replace their lead singer Steve Perry after he quits the band. They eventually find the perfect solution via YouTube: a street kid who fronted a Filipino cover band.” In other wins, Israeli feature Fill the Void won the critic-centered FIPRESCI Prize for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year. In the film, an “18-year-old in Tel Aviv’s Hassidic community must choose between her heart’s desire and familial duty in a drama that make the conventions of the marriage plot feel brand new.” Palm Springs screened 42 of the 71 official Foreign Language submissions for the Academy Awards. The FIPRESCI prize for Best Actor of the Year in a Foreign Language Film went to Cosimo Rega Savatore Striano and Giovanni Acuri from Italian pic Caesar Must Die by Paolo Vittorio. Emilie Dequenne from Our Children (Belgium), directed by Joachim Lafosse, received the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Actress of the Year in a Foreign Language Film. The Cleaner (Peru) by Adrian Saba won the festival’s New Voices/New Visions award. The film tells the story of a mysterious and deadly epidemic in Lima, Perù, where a depressed and isolated man cleans up after the dying. When he takes in a frightened young boy who has lost his mother, he’s quietly transformed by the experience of caring for another human being. Spain’s Blancaneives by Pablo Berger, which opened the festival January 3rd, received the festival’s Cine Latino Award. The silent movie is an adaptation of Snow White, where the daughter of a famous bullfighter is mistreated by her wicked stepmother.  When she runs away and joins a band of dwarfs, her natural bullfighting talent is discovered, but her stepmother plots to bring her down. Well Isn’t That Special: The Rolling Stones Pay Their Dues To Black Blues Greats By Funding Funerals For Late Legends

Good Samaritans or white guilt at work ? It’s no secret that many great white rock and pop acts owe their sound and swag to black music, but it may come as a surprise that some artists have stepped up to the plate to give back to those less fortunate after their passing. According to National Enquirer reports : ROCK ’N’ ROLL SECRET: Too many white-boy rock groups (especially you, Led Zeppelin!) NEVER acknowledged their debt to those old-timey black blues musicians whose art they ripped off – but the Rolling Stones just can’t stop payin’ it back! Said a longtime business associate/close friend of the aging rockers: “It’s a little-known fact, but MICK JAGGER and the guys pay for the funerals of ALL the old bluesmen and blueswomen – most recently picking up burial expenses for the late, great ETTA JAMES and blues guitarist HUBERT SUMLIN. And nobody knows this because Mick and The Stones work hard to keep it quiet!” Kudos to the Stones. Can you think of some other white groups that owe a debt to black music? WENN

Amir Johnson Throws Mouthpiece at Ref, Gets Ejected

NBA action. It’s fantastically insane, 24/7/365. Toronto Raptors forward Amir Johnson was ejected from Monday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers after getting into an unusual argument with a referee. Amir Johnson Throws Mouthpiece at Ref As Portland’s J.J. Hickson swished the first of two free throws late in the third quarter, both Johnson and referee David Jones went to retrieve the ball. Jones grabbed it off one bounce but all of a sudden, Johnson began arguing with him and tried to grab the rock. Jones said something back, then ejected Johnson. Then Johnson walked toward Jones and – after he was physically restrained by teammates – threw his mouthpiece at the ref in a moment of very bad judgment. He will certainly be fined and probably suspended as well. Following Toronto’ fifth straight loss, Johnson spoke to reporters about the incident and explained it was out of character of him to lose his composure like he did. Maybe so, but David Stern will not likely be moved. In other awesome NBA news this week: Stephen Jackson threatened Serge Ibaka on Twitter Chris Wilcox flipped off the Kiss Cam for no reason Evelyn Lozada told Kenyon Martin to f–k off LeBron told Charles Barkley to shut up

Happy Birthday: Diddy, Pharrell And Kelly Rowland Party It Up At Miami B’day Bash For Producer Rico Love

Diddy was on hand to celebrate producer Rico Love’s birthday this weekend. He wasn’t the only one either. Kelly Rowland, BDR, Fat Joe and Pharrell were also seen on the scene. Here’s some info about the party: Roberto Cavalli and Saks Fifth Avenue, Bal Harbour pulled out all the stops Saturday night at SLS Hotel South Beach in honor of Rico Love’s 30th birthday celebration during Art Basel Miami Beach. The evening’s cocktail menu included a choice of GREY GOOSE® Cherry Noir Trey Noir, GREY GOOSE® Cherry Noir Triple Platinum and GREY GOOSE® Le Fizz. Attendees included Eva Cavalli, Kelly Rowland, Fat Joe, Pharrell, Russell Simmons, Andre Harrell, Janice Combs, Angie Beyince, DJ Cassidy and Adriana de Moura, among others. Rico stepped on to the red carpet as photographers yelled “Happy Birthday Rico,” and Eva Cavalli soon joined him for a couple’s photo session by the paparazzi. Two hours in to the event, guests were asked to take their seats at the side of the pool to witness an exclusive Cavalli fashion show, orchestrated backstage by Eva Cavalli herself. The Roberto Cavalli Spring/Summer 2013 collection featured was inspired by the poetic decorations of the Art Nouveau period. Cavalli did not show the collection at New York Fashion Week this year, making this special presentation for Rico’s birthday the only showing in the U.S. This year, Rico and Saks Fifth Avenue, Bal Harbour announced they are giving back to the community by donating 10% of the proceeds of sales from the Cavalli fashion show and pop-up store, as well as in-store sales, to Usher’s New Look Foundation. DJ Affect was hired to provide the beats throughout the cocktail reception and fashion show. As the fashion show came to a close, invited dinner guests quickly made their way inside Katsuya, the hotel’s Asian-inspired restaurant, for the private dinner portion of the evening. Approximately 100 invited guests were seated for the private dinner, with Rico’s table of 10 facing the entire room around him. As the Edamame was served family-style on to each table, guests were treated to a first course of Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, Creamy Rock Shrimp Tempura and the chef’s selection of assorted classic rolls, including Baked Crab Cut Rolls and Vegetable Roll. The second course comprised of Chicken Teriyaki, Robata Grilled Kobe Skirt Steak, Miso-Marinated Black Cod, Stir Fry Vegetables and Steamed White Rice. As the first course began, Rico’s five-layer birthday cake was wheeled in to the side of the room, encased with notes and bars of music etched in to each tier with Rico’s name on the very top in red, and a HUBLOT logo written in white icing on the middle layer. The base of the cake illustrates the keys on a piano, with ‘Happy 30th Birthday’ written beneath it. A Hublot watchcase with watch inside was designed in cake to resemble a replica of his own. As the second course was presented, Sean “P Diddy” Combs, made a grand entrance with an entourage of Rico’s friends. “I knew Rico while he was growing up in Harlem,” Combs said. “ I was blown away by his music then, and I still continue to listen to it now. Please raise your glasses to our friend, Rico Love.” Owner of Hublot Americas, Rick Delacroix, then made a birthday gift speech to Rico, and presented him with a limited edition Hublot Miami watch, named the “Hublot 305,” of which only 10 were made. Rico took the watch from its box and wrapped it around his other wrist and showed it next to his existing Hublot timepiece. “I am lucky, honored and privileged to have such a warm and heartfelt group of family and friends around me on such a special day,” said Love. “I’d like to thank Eva and Roberto Cavalli, and our sponsors, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bal Harbour, Hublot and GREY GOOSE, for making this momentous birthday occasion the most memorable ever.” The impressive dessert line-up included Chocolate Lover’s Cake, Passion Fruit Caramel Donuts and Mochi Ice Cream. Rico Love is one of the foremost music producers in the hip hop and urban music industry, having written hits for Usher, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, Trey Songz, Fergie, Romeo Santos and Diddy, among others.
