‘Mac Miller deserves it. He’s working hard and he’s happy,’ Pharrell tells MTV News of the Pittsburgh MC’s success. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ricky Louis Pharrell Photo: MTV News So what does a #1 album get you? If you’re Mac Miller , it gets you studio time with one of rap’s most storied producers, Pharrell Williams . Less than a week after the Pittsburgh spitter’s debut Blue Slide Park landed the #1 spot on the Billboard albums chart, Mac linked up with the Neptunes hitmaker in a Miami recording studio and got to work. “He came down to Miami. He was like, ‘Yo I want to do something,’ ” Pharrell told MTV News in an interview earlier this month. “He went in and again, just made like two really good records.” No telling where those records will end up, but Miller is pretty excited about the collaboration as well. “just made somethin’ crazy with @Pharrell all I can say is wait til y’all hear this,” Mac tweeted after the session in November. Pharrell and Mac returned to the studio in January, this time with Busta Rhymes, Reek Da Villian and Kendrick Lamar. If the picture that Miller tweeted is any indication, fans can expect quite a bit from the two sessions. While Mac crafted the majority of his Blue Slide Park album with local producers E. Dan and Big Jerm at ID Labs studios, he has also been branching out, clocking in time with some of rap’s most revered beatmakers. Aside from Pharrell, Miller has already recorded with DJ Premier, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Just Blaze. The multiplatinum Skateboard P applauds Miller’s efforts and toasts his recent success. “Mac Miller deserves it. He’s working hard and he’s happy. He’s very thankful, he’s a super humble kid and he deserves it,” Pharrell said. “That’s what the game needed, and it’s just sprouting up everywhere and it’s so awesome for us to all be able to do it.” What do you expect to hear from Pharrell and Mac Miller’s upcoming collaborations? Singers from Adele to Justin Timberlake have sung stinging goodbyes. By John Mitchell Katy Perry performs “Part of Me” at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images The breakup song is a rite of passage for just about every singer. Mostly, they’re sad-sack anthems about moving on, but every so often, the wound is raw enough that the artist is inspired to issue their former lover a cutting message: I’m better off without you. That’s what Katy Perry seems to be doing with her new single “Part of Me,” which she premiered at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. With lyrics like “Days like this I want to drive away/ Pack bags and watch your shadow fade/ You chewed me up and spit me out like I was poison in your mouth/ You took my life, you drank me down/ But that was then and this is now,” it’s pretty clear she is dressing down her ex, Russell Brand, and has no intention of beating around the bush. Need less-obtuse lyrical evidence that the song is about Brand? Later, she sings, “You can keep the diamond ring, it don’t mean nothing anyway/ In fact, you can keep everything, except for me.” Perry has only exchanged rings with one gent, and that’s Brand. But this isn’t her first kiss-off track: On Teenage Dream , Perry laments a love gone wrong on “Circle the Drain,” which she reportedly penned about her relationship with Travie McCoy. It doesn’t present a flattering picture of her time with the Gym Class Heroes frontman. “You fall asleep during foreplay/ ‘Cause the pills you take/ Are more your forte,” Perry sings. “Wanna be your lover/ Not your f—ing mother/ Can’t be your savior/ I don’t have the power/ I’m not gonna stay and watch you circle the drain.” Ouch. Whether “Part of Me” or “Circle the Drain” will stand the test of time to rank alongside the most-famous kiss-off songs in pop history remains to be seen, but Perry has certainly got people talking right now. From Gloria Gaynor’s disco classic “I Will Survive” to George Michael’s “Faith” and pretty much half the songs in Kelly Clarkson’s catalog, it’s a genre that could use a little fresh blood, though these five (relatively) recent additions to the cannon do a pretty solid job of holding down the jilted-and-not-having-it fort. Justin Timberlake, “Cry Me a River” and “What Goes Around … Comes Around” We’re giving Justin Timberlake a little extra shine on our kiss-off list because he did the genre justice by bringing the sex to it then coming back for more — which is a pretty good metaphor for how we’d like to break up with him. “What Goes Around” was in many ways a sequel to Timberlake’s 2002 single “Cry Me a River,” from his debut solo set, Justified . “River” details the dissolution of a relationship after his girl cheated on him and is allegedly a behind-the-scenes look at what really ended his three-year relationship with Britney Spears. “I’m not going to specifically say if any song is about anybody,” Timberlake told MTV when asked who the ballad was about. “I will say writing a couple of songs on the record helped me deal with a couple of things.” Noted. Timberlake returned to the post-Britney well for “What Goes Around,” from 2006’s FutureSex/LoveSounds , though for his second spin, the spurned heartthrob changed the message from “How could you?” to “You’re gonna get yours.” The lesson here is clear: Do not cheat on JT unless you would like several awesome pop songs assassinating your character penned in your honor. (And, really, wouldn’t you rather be the subject of “LoveStoned”?) Adele, “Rolling in the Deep” While assembling this list, we tried to keep it to songs where we could identify the subject (i.e. Britney in “Cry Me a River,” Carey Hart in Pink’s “So What,” which you’ll find below), but we’re making an exception for Adele ‘s “Rolling in the Deep.” The song is so ubiquitous after its many Grammy wins and so famously about her ex that it is impossible to ignore. And while Adele has never spoken publicly about who the songs on her massive album 21 are about — and the guy has smartly never stepped forward to say, “Yeah, I’m the one who was pretty awful to the world’s current favorite singer” — “Rolling in the Deep” is still without question the most-stinging kiss-off song in recent memory. The powerhouse vocalist doesn’t sugarcoat her feelings, singing, “Finally, I can see you crystal clear/ Go ‘head and sell me out and I’ll lay your s–t bare/ See how I leave with every piece of you/ Don’t underestimate the things that I will do.” Depending how you look at it, Adele possibly offered up the harshest kiss-off ever in the history of sound. If it wasn’t bad enough to have an album’s worth of songs dedicated to how much you sucked as a boyfriend, we wonder what it feels like to watch that album go on to win six Grammys and sell close to 7 million copies, seemingly en route to becoming the first 10-time platinum album in the U.S. since Usher’s 2004 Confessions . They say looking good is the best revenge (and she did that too, looking glam and trim on Grammy night), but we think Adele’s critical and commercial success probably stings the hardest. Pink, “So What” Our thoughts on success killing the game when it comes to slapping your ex in the figurative face also applies here: “So What,” the lead single from Pink ‘s fifth studio album, 2008’s Funhouse , was the singer’s first #1 hit. (Doesn’t that seem strange? It’s true though.) This song was written by Pink while she and Carey Hart were separated and the oft-brutally honest singer did not hold back when it came to taking shots at the motocross superstar. The song’s chorus says it all: “So, so what/ I’m still a rock star, I got my rock moves/ And I don’t need you/ And guess what, I’m having more fun/ And now that we’re done, I’m gonna show you tonight/ I’m alright, I’m just fine/ And you’re a tool/ So, so what/ I am a rock star, I got my rock moves/ And I don’t want you tonight.” Hart must be into that sort of thing, however, because he and Pink reunited not long after the song was recorded and he even good-naturedly cameos throughout the video. The pair now have a baby girl, Willow, and appear happier than ever. Maybe it took a good kiss-off for these two love birds to realize they couldn’t live without each other. Alanis Morissette, “You Oughta Know” In case you don’t know already know, this angst classic is all about Dave Coulier, a comedian-actor best known as Joey Gladstone on the former ABC sitcom “Full House.” Yes, Alanis Morissette wonders if Uncle Joey is thinking about her when he’s, you know, getting busy with his new girl. Eek. Once you know this song is about Coulier, it’s difficult to watch “Full House” the same way. After all, we learn an awful lot about his relationship with the much-younger Morissette — including that we should probably give them a rundown on what you are and are not permitted to do in a movie theater. Sure, there are more-recent breakup tracks and, yes, we were trying to keep this list contemporary, but much like the end of a relationship gone sour, it’s hard to shake a great kiss-off song. ‘We’re not done with ‘Friday Night Lights,’ ‘ executive producer Peter Berg tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Kitsch on the “Friday Night Lights” TV series Photo: NBC The last time we checked in on a potential movie based on the “Friday Night Lights” TV series, star Taylor Kitsch told MTV News that he knew just as much as we did. “I hear hearsay and all this kind of stuff,” Kitsch said, adding that executive producer Peter Berg could always make it happen. “If Pete sets his mind to something, he’ll usually get it done.” MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with Berg himself at a “Battleship” preview at Toy Fair in New York, and we asked for an update on the movie. “Jason Katims, who was our super talented show-runner, is about done with the script,” Berg said. “You never know. So much of these things become scheduling. Kyle [Chandler] is busy, Adrianne [Palicki] is busy, Taylor is busy, Connie Britton is busy, but if we can get everyone in the same room at the same time, we all want to do it. We’re not done with ‘Friday Night Lights.’ ” Speaking to a potential plotline, Berg said they plan to involve some real-life elements pegged to former Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach but that things will revolve around Coach and Tami Taylor from the TV series. “[Katims] has come up with a really great storyline that parallels what happened to Mike Leach, one of my heroes, a coach at Texas Tech who was unjustly fired and unjustly accused of mistreating a player with a concussion, which was proven to not have been the case. He’s now at Washington State getting ready for what I think will be a great redemption story,” Berg explained. “It would be critical that we get Kyle and Connie [onboard for the film] — we anchored the show around them — and then bring in Riggins, Tyra, Lyla and all other characters as we could get them. But the idea is to really revolve it around the coach.” Kitsch seemed to have reservations about returning to his beloved character, but he’s open to a cameo. “I loved the way I left Riggs,” Kitsch said when asked if he’d like to continue on with the character. “You never know. Maybe a little cameo or something. We’ll see if he even wants me in it.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
‘There’s not a worried bone in my body,’ Dwayne Johnson tells MTV News of getting back in the ring with John Cena. By Eric Ditzian Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Photo: MTV News Not long after Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returned to the WWE last year — and shortly before the wrestler-turned-actor-turned-wrestler again unleashed the People’s Elbow at WrestleMania XXVII, the man himself promised MTV News he’d inflict some serious damage on someone during the biggest night in wrestling. “I’m going to take my fist and lay it across somebody’s lips and take my boot — which is a size 14, so it’s a big boot — and stick it straight up somebody’s ass,” he bragged . The ass in question turned out, in fact, to be two asses: John Cena’s and the Miz’s. Both men felt the wrath of the Rock at WrestleMania. On April 1 at WrestleMania XXVIII, the Rock is set to do it all over again — except now he’s got a very specific target in mind. “Here’s the thing about John Cena: He’s such a good girl, really good woman,” the Rock cracked to us while promoting his upcoming action flick, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” “At the end of the day, he knocked on my door, I’m gonna answer it. I’ve got a size 15 boot, and it’s gonna go right up his stink. Or his lady parts. Either one.” Let’s not ask how his feet mysteriously grew in the past year. Instead, we shall dwell on the creativity of the Rock’s smack talk (even as we give him a free pass on that less-than-tasteful undermining of Cena’s manhood, because this is the WWE, after all; what else would you expect?). “I can’t wait,” the Rock added. “There’s not a worried bone in my body. My goal is to put on the biggest match of all time, and I’m going to do that.” Will you watch the Rock back in action? Let us know in the comments!
Ricky Martin, Bruce Springsteen, Dierks Bentley and Sugarland also in the mix. By Gil Kaufman Barack Obama Photo: Shahar Azran/WireImage We already know President Obama likes to listen to (and occasionally sing) Al Green songs. And he’s told us that his iPod has a bit of Jay-Z and Lil Wayne on it . But with the toughest re-election campaign of his career on the horizon, what music will Obama 2012 be using to pump up crowds at rallies? Judging by a playlist uploaded to Spotify this week, it looks like a cheerful, noncontroversial mix of classic rock, country, soul and R&B, but, alas, no hip-hop. Instead, in a clear bid to appeal to the broad middle, Obama chose songs by beloved soul acts like Booker T. & the MG’s (“Green Onions”), Earth Wind & Fire (“Got to Get You Into My Life”), The Impressions (“Keep on Pushing”) and, yes, Green (the pleading “Let’s Stay Together”). From the rock pile, he went with Wilco (“I Got You”), Arcade Fire (“We Used to Wait”), U2 (“Even Better Than the Real Thing”) and the new blue-collar recession anthem from Bruce Springsteen (“We Take Care of Our Own”). For those visits to the heartland, he loaded up on country goodness from Sugarland (“Stand Up” and “Everyday America”), Darius Rucker (“This”), Zac Brown Band (“Keep Me in Mind”) and Dierks Bentley (“Home”). There are a few oddball picks in there as well, including a deep cut from No Doubt (“Different People”), a very literal AM radio staple from REO Speedwagon (“Roll with the Changes”), a cover of the Band’s “The Weight” by Aretha Franklin, some indie rock from Noah and the Whale (“Tonight’s the Kind of Night”) and a Ricky Martin/ Joss Stone duet (“The Best Thing About Me Is You”). While likely GOP opponent Mitt Romney takes the stage to the rousing strains of Kid Rock’s Americana anthem “Born Free,” Obama plans to get crowds pumped with the likes of modern R&B master Raphael Saadiq (“Keep Marchin’ “), Florence and the Machine (“You’ve Got the Love”) and afro-era prog popsters Electric Light Orchestra (“Mr. Blue Sky”). Rounding out the list is obscure jam act AgesAndAges, whose “No Nostalgia” is a handclapping ditty that just begs for a group hug, Jennifer Hudson’s “Love You I Do,” Ledisi’s self-explanatory “Raise Up,” James Taylor’s feel-good “Your Smiling Face,” country duo Montgomery Gentry’s small-town homage “My Town” and Ray LaMontagne’s tear-in-your-beer lovefest “You Are the Best Thing.” It might sound tame, but don’t forget that back in 2008 when he was still just Candidate Obama, the president’s taste in music was pretty similar. At the time, the future boomer-in-chief said he listened to everything from Bob Dylan, Elton John, Earth Wind & Fire and the Rolling Stones to Sheryl Crow, Springsteen and a number of jazz and classic giants, including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Yo-Yo Ma. Bachata star tells MTV News his first solo tour will present ‘nearly every single song on my new album, Formula, Vol. 1 .’ By Christina Garibaldi Romeo Santos Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images For over 15 years, Romeo Santos was the lead singer of the popular bachata group, Aventura . They performed across the globe, won 21 Billboard Latin Music Awards and released six studio albums — but now, Santos is stepping out on his own. The Bronx, New York, singer is returning to his hometown to play three sold-out shows at New York’s famous Madison Square Garden, a venue he sold out numerous times with his former band. “I love performing in New York,” Santos recently told MTV News. “Just something about the energy that the crowd gives you, you give it back, a lot of interaction. I’m looking forward to it.” Yet, this time, it will be a different experience for Santos, since he will be performing on his own. This past November, Santos released his debut solo album, Formula, Vol. 1 , which mixes his famous bachata style with R&B. On Friday (February 10), Santos will kick off his tour at MSG, performing for the first time in over a year. So, what can this sold-out crowd expect? “A lot of energy,” Santos said. “I don’t like to plans things a lot. It’s gonna be a show with a little bit of everything. You’re gonna hear some of my Aventura classics, nearly every single song on my new album, Formula, Vol. 1 , and what I do is I go onstage and I just ride it out. I don’t like planning what am I gonna say to the crowd. Sometimes the show takes a whole different twist.” Santos, who said he’s more anxious than nervous to take the stage without his Aventura bandmates, will be on the road until the end of March, and is humbled by the positive response he’s received from his fans. “I’m really, really grateful. I don’t take anything for granted,” Santos said. “I’ve been working very, very hard. I was very focused on this last production. I wanted it to represent a lot and not abandon my genre, my roots. ” Santos, who teamed up with Usher and Lil Wayne on his debut album, is not ruling out the possibility that these two might join him onstage during his tour. “It’s possible,” he said. “What I normally do is keep it a surprise, but it’s a possibility.” Are you excited to see Romeo Santos in concert? Skrillex, Avicii, Duck Sauce, Swedish House Mafia and Robyn also contenders for Best Dance Recording at Sunday’s show. By Adam Stewart David Guetta Photo: Larry Marano/ Getty Images Kudos to the Academy. They’ve pretty much nailed it when it comes to the Grammy nominees in what’s arguably the most-important dance-related category Sunday night: Best Dance Recording. In 2011, the U.S. EDM market saw an explosion the likes of which hadn’t seen since the punk rock revolution back in the ’90s, and those given the nod are a testament to its abounding success. A category once graced by Madonna, Britney and Gaga is now overrun by the Prince of Dubstep, a monstrous mouse, a turntable whiz and his NYC cohort, three rock stars of house, a Frenchman with a Swedish prodigy and a girl who originally showed us love in the ’90s. Each one of the nominees was not only at the helm for producing a killer track, but was at the forefront of a movement that is changing the tastes of the American mainstream and truly defining cool culture. In further recognition of EDM’s explosion, the Grammys have lined up an all-star crew for a dance-music performance Sunday night in a tent outside Staples Center. Chris Brown, the Foo Fighters and Lil Wayne will join EDM superstars deadmau5 and David Guetta for a genre-busting performance that will highlight dance/electronica music. This marks the first Grammy performance to shed light on the increasingly popular genre, which has recently seeped into every form of music. For anyone still getting their feet wet in the scene, fear not: We’ve broken down the Best Dance Recording noms, put together a little prediction of who will probably win, based on how these things have gone in the past, and who should win — as in, what might best be accepted and respected by the EDM masses. It could very well be a pivotal year for the Grammys — if they get it right. Best Dance Recording Nominees deadmau5 and Greta Svabo Bech, “Raise Your Weapon” : deadmau5 went dubstep with this little experiment, and it earned him high marks. The angelic vocals of Bech, juxtaposed with signature ruff and rugged dubstep riffs, this track catapulted itself into a monster. deamau5 again showcased his versatility while (for the most part) maintaining that signature deadmau5 sound, but was it original enough for what we usually expect from this seemingly unconquerable musical madman? Duck Sauce , “Barbra Streisand” : In 2009, iconic NYC house-music icon Armand Van Helden paired up with Canadian spin master A-Trak in a collaborative effort named after the most popular of all condiments in pan-Asian cuisine. Since then, they’ve become one of the most popular dance acts around, in large part due to this crossover smash that pays homage to one of America’s most beloved entertainers. The tune is decked out with a spirited house groove and a vocal hook that everyone knows the words to. You’d have to have lived on the moon to not have heard this one, and have no soul to do anything but love it. David Guetta and Avicii , “Sunshine” : True EDM fans can’t complain on this one. It’s progressive house at its finest. EDM loyalists all the world over were ecstatic to see Guetta distancing himself from the Peas and picking up on Avicii, who is simply one of the most insanely talented producers out there. Try listening to this tune and not smiling ear to ear. It combines Avicii’s signature piano riffs and progressive charm with Guetta’s thunderous big room house and ability to produce bangers at a moment’s notice. The production value of “Sunshine” is precise, clean and harmonious. If the Academy is properly tuned in, this thumper has a good chance of coming out the victor. Robyn , “Call Your Girlfriend” : Taking nothing away, this is a killer tune by one of the key players in the dance-music crossover. However, it was Kaskade’s remix (un-nominated) that truly resonated with the EDM masses. Regardless, the original was a monster in the mainstream, and the killer cut off the third installment of Body Talk has absolutely taken Robyn to new heights and solidified her place as one of the all-time dance-music greats. Skrillex , “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” : This track was Dubstep 101 to anyone who’d never heard the genre. Call it “brostep” if you will, but you can’t deny that it expanded the sonic pallet of anyone who dared to listen to it. Some would say EDM noobs as a whole probably think the track defines the movement as a whole, which is less than accurate. Never the less, Skrillex and “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” is a very fitting example of what helped push dance music into the spotlight in 2011. Don’t be surprised to see Skrillex walking away with the golden gramophone. Swedish House Mafia , “Save the World” : The year 2011 was perhaps an incubation period for the rock stars of house. Having released just a pair of tracks in the calendar year, the Swedes went a little more pop on this than they had in the past, but nevertheless, still gave their loyal following what they wanted with a killer hook and an impossible-not-to-sing-along vocal provided by fellow Swede John Martin. If videos were involved in the selection, this would certainly take the prize. Heroic puppies and house music? A match made in heaven. MTV News brings you a first look at 30-second spot, debuting Tuesday. By Kara Warner Photo: NARAS The countdown to the 2012 Grammys is on. Last week, we got a sneak peek at a few promo photos of host LL Cool J and nominees Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift . This week, MTV News has landed an exclusive first look at the television ad campaign featuring the 25-time-nominated Foo Fighters, who are up for six Grammys this year, including Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for Wasting Light. Check out the complete list of 2012 Grammy nominees. The 30-second teaser, which debuts Tuesday night on CBS, opens with an aerial shot overlooking a bejeweled city, reminiscent of the Emerald City from “Wizard of Oz” but all in gold, not green. Over the opening notes of the Foo track “Bridge Burning,” the camera starts to zoom in toward the center of the city, with the gem-like walls exploding into pieces around the shot. From the golden and dusty debris, the Foos emerge individually rocking out to the song. First Taylor Hawkins, then Dave Grohl, followed by Chris Shiflett, Nate Mendel and Pat Smear. The promo ends with the Grammy slogan — “We Are Music” — etched into the rock formations. According to a statement from the Recording Academy, the focus of this year’s ad campaign is on the “raw emotion in music that connects fans and artists and transcends the Grammy stage. It’s that moment where the artist is ready to push the music out and the fan is ready to receive — that’s the true power of music.” The stylized visuals in the video spots are aimed at exposing and enhancing the emotions of this year’s nominees and their songs. In addition to the promo featuring the Foo Fighters, look out for additional spots with Adele, Bon Iver and Skrillex, as well as the print campaign, which features Grammy winners and current nominees Bruno Mars and Paul McCartney. The 54th annual Grammy Awards air live Sunday, February 12, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. What do you think of the Foo Fighters promo? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Foo Fighters
Hotly tipped MC Mac Miller also shows up in the clip, which is heavy on single-digit salutes. By James Montgomery Gabe Saporta of Cobra Starship in “Middle Finger” Photo: Fueled By Ramen In Cobra Starship’s “Middle Finger” video, released Thursday (January 19), there are plenty of allegories to economic injustices, socio-political discourses on a return to the Gold Standard and, perhaps most pointedly, thinly veiled criticisms of the United States’ imperialistic foreign policies and their long-term effects on global de-stabilization. OK, not really. It’s basically just a lot of middle fingers, of all shapes and sizes, ages and genders, thrust defiantly skyward. At one point there’s a callback to their “You Make Me Feel …” video, a “Zoolander”-esque Jeep trek, a cute puppy, some basketball and exactly one old woman getting drenched. Oh, and Mac Miller shows up, too. Of course, all of this is basically one giant contradiction to what frontman Gabe Saporta told MTV News late last year , when he promised the “Middle Finger” clip would feature “a lot of cheekiness … and no middle fingers.” But, then again, if Cobra Starship have proved anything over the years, it’s that they’re not adverse to a good joke , which is probably what Saporta was doing when he touted the complete lack of fingers in the new video. Their videos are never serious, and, well, “Finger” is definitely keeping with that trend. High art this most certainly ain’t. So, much like Big Sean did with his “Dance (A$$)” video — which, like the title implied, featured plenty of posterior — Cobra Starship delivered a clip that’s just one long vignette of bird-flipping. The basic plot follows the guys (and gals) as they traipse across a city, basically being complete jerks to everyone, which, in turn, earns them plenty of one-finger salutes. It’s pretty funny, to be honest. And that’s the best thing you can say about any Cobra Starship vid. Leave the social commentary to the Boss; Saporta and Co. are content churning out the goofiest clips in the rock universe. And “Middle Finger” is a welcome addition to their, uh, oeuvre. Proudly, profanely so. What did you think of the “Middle Finger” video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Cobra Starship
