When Your Sister Listens To Her Mister More Than You

More here:

A few months ago, while on the coattails of summer’s craziness, I lived through a strange experience of friendship that left me to the tendency of some friends to take, take, take… and take. Call them what you may, I like to think of these types of relationships as “convenience friendships.” This particular story involves a man – a player – that came between a sister and me. It all began when a series of events led me to introduce two single friends, each from a separate corner of the lonely-hearts club. She, a dynamic sister with a bright future glazing in her horizon, sociable, a people-pleaser, ever-so insecure, met him, an attractive, slightly pretentious man, whose confidence, self-righteousness and charm could blow anyone’s pants off. I went along with the venture, trying my best to facilitate what was an unlikely combination. She had returned from abroad at the beginning of the year and was detached from the life she left behind. But I, like others in our friendship group, was excited to hear about her stories, supposing that her brilliant mind was ticking over with exciting plans and was full of stories about new people and far-away lands. On the other side of the equation, he and I had begun seeing each other quite often on the weekends, having a crazy time between us and with other frivolous friends. He spoke about his desire to calm down a little, to find someone with the prospect of longevity. So, when circumstances led them to meet, there was clear and open interest on both sides. As the weeks went by I stood on the sidelines answering the questions of one about the other and tried my best to bridge some of the obvious differences between them. But it appeared that nothing was going to work between them. He had told me that he had been sleeping around, and even took another sister home on an evening in which she had called me to chase information about where he was. This came in his relationship disclaimer, that so as long as there was no future between them, and the attempts to make something work had reached an expiry date, he was free to do as he wished and with whomever he pleased. She on the other hand was reappearing in my life quite sporadically to gain information about what he was doing, where he was and what I knew about him. It was strange because, aside from staying at my place when she first returned from abroad, I would only hear from her when she wanted something. It reached the point where I gathered that even she was aware of this, telling me one day “Let’s catch up soon, girl. I feel like I haven’t seen you at all.” I was not too concerned at this point; I was busy. But, it was all to boil over after one wild evening when he and I shared a kiss at a club. Having been told that nothing was going on between them, I fell to his charms and was one of two women to be swooned that evening with his kiss. I realized that what I had done was foul when I turned to see him with that another sister. Indignant, I left the club. The next day I spoke with him to clear the air, only to discover that he and my friend, she, were seeing each other that evening for round two. At this point my anger about having been used as a go-between-girl between two unmatched people had reached its climax. After months of being there for both of them, I was eventually pushed to redundancy, the friendships began to end and my interactions with both faded. I also can’t overlook the notion that I was slightly jealous. Two friends, who I had known for 2 years on separate grounds, had run off together and were leaving me behind. So one evening, I directed a comment to him, amongst friends, that questioned the worth of his friendship. Given how proactive he was in broadcasting to the world a sense of moral superiority and excellence in friendship, he took my criticism poorly and defensively. I considered him a dirty rat, so I didn’t care about how he reacted. But then, the following day, I received a phone call from her questioning me about the evening in which he and I had kissed. He had obviously told her to spite me and I imagined this was accompanied with the usual dialogue of “she must love me,” which he regularly uses to justify burnt bridges with women (those he burns with men are because they are jealous of his style and charm.) Cornered, I asked to meet with her the next day during my lunch break. She accepted but brought along a mutual friend so to avoid any conversation about what had happened. This was a clear indication she was not interested in hearing what I knew. I told her anyway. A week later, having boiled over in self-reflection, I sent her an SMS with a stern warning her to watch her mouth with other people. She had fragrantly spread the word amongst mutual friends that I was the saboteur between them as they went about sewing the seeds of their rock-sold connection. I doubted, at this point, that she believed me when I told her about him sleeping around. This sickened me in my self-righteousness because I knew they were having unprotected sex, for which he would take no responsibility. A typical player – selfish and irresponsible. The entire scenario left me feeling foolish and ashamed. Aside from considering him a friend of mine – an arrogant man with little no consideration of other people’s dignity – I had also fallen victim to subtle ways of a sister’s convenience friendship. In all of this, I did things I was not at all proud of. I was very wrong to have kissed him without appreciating fully that she still may have had feelings for him by virtue of not knowing he was sleeping around and meeting new women. Her interaction with me was so sporadic, and always so focused on her needs with him, that I was never given the opportunity to know that she was still pursuing him at that point. But, as they began seeing each other again, with talk of them moving in together, a common enemy for them both has been the best method to cover up their obvious differences. Ultimately, my former sister got what she wanted – to fill a void in her life with a charming man. My services to her have dried up and so too has the friendship. I scratch my head occasionally and wonder whether or not I should still care about her. But then I realize that it was a lesson learned for me and that so too will it be a lesson for her when she finally gets burned. And that is how one friendship of convenience reached its inevitable end. “I Love My Husband, But I Want His Friend & I’m Thinking Of Leaving With This Guy” Is It Possible To Re-Do Romance?

Black Eyed Peas’ apl.de.ap Launches ‘Charity Dreams’ Auction

Fans can bid on a package that includes a Ferrari and studio time with the MC. By Gil Kaufman Black Eyed Peas’ apl.de.ap Photo: Getty Images With the Black Eyed Peas recently announcing their hiatus after a star-studded sendoff show in Miami, the band’s members are not wasting time getting busy. Leader will.i.am. has already dropped the eye-popping video for “T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever),” the electro-fueled first single from his new solo album, while member apl.de.ap is focusing on non-musical ventures. Apl announced the launch of this week of the “Charity Dreams” auction benefiting education in his native Philippines. The rapper, who is an educational ambassador for the island nation, is upping the ante on celebrity auctions in a major way with the “We Can Be Anything” event. The auction — which begins pre-registration this week at CharityDreams.com and lasts through 9 p.m. ET Monday — allows fans to start the bidding at just 99 cents for a huge prize package that may end up being the most affordable donation on the planet. Not only will the winner get a private-jet flight out to Los Angeles to spend time in the studio to watch as Apl creates a custom track in their honor, but the BEP rapper will also cut a custom disc of the session and serve as the DJ at the winner’s birthday party, where he will spin the song for the top prize-getter and 50 of his or her friends. The winning bidder will also get a 2012 collector’s edition Ferrari, $250,000 in cash and a trip to Las Vegas with 10 friends to spend New Year’s Eve with Fergie while staying in the “Real World” penthouse suite. Once 1 million people pre-register and the bidding begins, all the money donated in bids will go toward building 10,000 classrooms in the Philippines and improving education in the nation. And even before the first brick is laid, bidders will be able to join together to help build “virtual classrooms.” According to a release announcing the effort, every bid will allow users to buy virtual books, pencils, chairs, desks, etc., and help build virtual classrooms in an effort to combine gaming, social networking and philanthropy. Each time a bidder finishes a virtual classroom, an actual classroom will be named for that bidder once construction is completed on the new schools. In a unique twist, the initial fee to place a charity bid is 99 cents, with the bidding price beginning at $0. Organizers expect the final package to go for no more than a few hundred dollars thanks to a system in which each bid increases the top price by just a fraction of a penny. “That means that even as hundreds, thousands, or even millions of people bid, the final sale price will only go up to no more than a few hundred dollars,” according to a press release announcing the auction. “We have leveled the playing field, and the price stays affordable, with the auction proceeds going to a good cause.” Each bid will also entitle users to an app, music download or play list curated by Apl and featuring an exclusive song or the chance to have Apl follow you on Twitter. Adele Is Evanescence’s Artist Of The Year, ‘Big Time’

‘It’s been cool to watch her succeed, because it’s just someone who’s truly talented, no gimmicks involved,’ Amy Lee tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Dave Hogan/ Getty Images In 2011, Evanescence rose again, ending a four-year hiatus with a chart-topping new album , a pair of booming singles and a triumphant tour. So as the year draws to a close and MTV reveals our picks for the Best of 2011 , we’re reaching out to a host of acts who dominated and defined the past 12 months to get their take on the year in music. And, really, there are few that both dominated and defined quite like Evanescence did. That’s why we had to ask frontwoman Amy Lee who she’d name as the year’s best artist. And her answer is sort of shocking, given that she fronts one of the loudest bands in rock. Then again, her pick did have, without question, one of the biggest years of any artist, in any genre. “My artist of the year? Adele. I think this was, big time, her year, [and] I’m just so happy to see her succeed the way she has,” Lee said. “I know she got a bunch of Grammy nominations … and it’s awesome. It’s been cool to watch her succeed, because it’s just someone who’s truly talented, no gimmicks involved.” Lee didn’t stop her praise for the British singer there. She also chose Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” as her song of the year (hey, so did we! ), proving that, though she’s spent most of 2011 resurrecting her band and reclaiming the rock throne, she also found time to listen to the radio. All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Then, come to MTVNews.com at 5 p.m. as we reveal our top picks of the year! Lady Gaga Visits White House To Discuss Bullying

Gaga met with administration officials to discuss their anti-bullying campaign By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Though she didn’t appear to get another audience with the President, Lady Gaga visited the White House on Wednesday to offer her help in the Obama administration’s anti-bullying campaign. Gaga met with administration staffers about her pet issue, but was unable to speak to the President in person, as he was in Kansas giving a speech on the economy. “Lady Gaga is a source of strength for many young people who feel isolated and scared at their schools. Today, I had the opportunity to welcome her to the White House, where we discussed ways we could work together to make sure that no child comes under attack, regardless of his or her race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other factor,” wrote Obama senior advisor Valerie Jarrett in a blog post on the White House website . “Lady Gaga has described this cause as a personal one — she has said that as a child, she was often picked on for being different. I am deeply moved by the way she has used her story, and her success, to inspire young people, and shine the spotlight on important issues.” Gaga previously met with Obama when she attended a fundraiser for the president’s re-election campaign in California in September. The singer, who recently announced the upcoming launch of the Born This Way Foundation along with her mother, was uncharacteristically low-key about the White House pop-in, not posing for photos or publicizing the visit. Jarrett went on to enumerate the various ways the administration has taken on bullying, including the White House conference on bullying held earlier this year by the president and First Lady Michelle Obama. The Lady Gaga event came on the same day that the administration released a new analysis of state bullying laws and policies, which shows that states have made some progress in enacting policies and legislation to address bullying, but that more work is left to be done. “As we continue protecting our children, we look forward to working with Lady Gaga, the Born This Way Foundation, and with every American who is willing to help make our society more kind, inclusive, and equal,” Jarrett said. Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers Among Rock Hall Of Fame Inductees

Guns N’ Roses, Donovan and The Faces will also be inducted in April. By Gil Kaufman Beastie Boys Photo: Capitol More than a quarter century after they brought hard rock back to the top of the heap, the original lineup of legendary Los Angeles band Guns N’ Roses will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April. Guns were among the acts named on Wednesday as the Class of 2012, which includes fellow L.A. rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers , iconic New York rap trio the Beastie Boys , 1960s pop singer Laura Nyro, the Small Faces (and their later Rod Stewart-led incarnation, the Faces), as well as mellow 1960s singer Donovan. Also on the roster for the induction ceremony, which will take place on April 14 in Cleveland and air on HBO in early May, is early influence blues guitarist Freddie King and nonperformer Don Kirshner, who created the Archies and Monkees and hosted the long-running live-music TV show “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.” Among those passed over
this year were the Cure, Joan Jett, Heart and hip-hip duo Eric B. & Rakim. Acts become eligible for the Hall 25 years after the release of their first single or album, so this year’s crop all started releasing music in or before the year 1986. Led by the mercurial lead singer Axl Rose, GN’R re-invented hard rock with 1987’s Appetite for Destruction , which featured such indelible glam-punk hits as “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “It’s So Easy.” The band splintered a decade later amid a clash of egos, disagreement over musical direction and drug issues that resulted in Rose soldiering on alone with a parade of replacement sidemen. Before their induction was announced, buzz had already begun to build around a potential reunion between legendarily unfriendly co-founders Rose and guitarist Slash as well as the rest of the classic line-up, which included rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler. Rose is currently on the road with the new Guns. The Beastie Boys have been mixing rock, rap, soul, punk and funk for more than 30 years, helping to cross hip-hip over into the mainstream in a major way with their bratty 1986 full-length debut, License to Ill , rap’s first #1 album. After providing drunken anthems for a generation thanks to “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To) Party,” and “Brass Monkey,” they followed up with 1989’s head-tripping Paul’s Boutique , which set a new standard for artistry in sampling. They’ve continued to rock the mic over the course of five more studio albums, including this year’s Hot Sauce Committee Part Two . Funk-punk lifers the Red Hot Chili Peppers formed in Los Angeles in 1983 and released their self-titled debut the next year. Formed around the core of hyperkinetic singer Anthony Kiedis, high-energy bassist Flea, late guitarist Hillel Slovak and former drummer Jack Irons, the band made a name for itself with a spastic combo of funk, punk, hard rock and hip-hop, graduating from an underground fanbase to worldwide stardom and Grammy-winning albums thanks to such landmark tracks as “Give It Away,” “Under the Bridge” and “Scar Tissue.” Like the Who, English mod rockers the Small Faces were heavily influenced by American R&B, which they explored on signature songs “Itchycoo Park,” “Lazy Sunday” and “All or Nothing.” In their second phase as the Faces, members included future Rolling Stones rhythm guitarist Ronnie Wood and singer Rod Stewart. Late singer/songwriter Laura Nyro was just 19 when she recorded her debut in 1966, the same year folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary recorded her song, “And When I Die.” The fragile singer with an eclectic style wrote a string of songs that became hits for other acts, including “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “Sweet Blindness,” “Wedding Bell Blues” and “Blowin’ Away.” She also scored her own hit with Carole King’s “Up on the Roof.” Psychedelic Folkie Donovan Leitch scored a number of hits in the 1960s, including “Sunshine Superman,” “Mellow Yellow” and “Hurdy Gurdy Man.” Dissension has become one of the reliable side stories of the Rock Hall ceremonies. While such notoriously splintered acts as Led Zeppelin and the Talking Heads managed to set aside differences for one night (Blondie, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Van Halen not so much), the biggest question this year is whether Rose will make nice with his estranged former bandmates. There are also question marks over whether the Beastie Boys will perform, as the group have eschewed public appearances since the July 2009 revelation that member Adam “MCA” Yauch was undergoing treatment for cancer
of the salivary gland in the throat. Related Videos MTV First: Red Hot Chili Peppers Related Artists Beastie Boys Guns N’ Roses Red Hot Chili Peppers

The X Factor Power Poll: Who’s on Top?

We’re down to nine contestants on The X Factor , as this singing competition airs a special Tuesday installment this evening and then gives two finalists the boot tomorrow night. Hey, at least they’ll be home in time for sweet potato! As we head toward the home stretch of the first season, let’s stop and assess those still around. Who has the best shot at taking home the $5 million grand prize? Who might as well give up now? Read on for our rankings. 1. Melanie Amaro . The best voice, the right look, a positive attitude. There are similarities here to Pia Toscano, who was voted out earlier than expected on American Idol last season, but the judges get the final way here. Melanie will be safe for awhile. 2. Drew Ryniewicz . Simon’s mission has been to prove that his 14-year old charge can sing beyond her years, and we’d say he accomplished that with her cover of ” With or Without You .” Moving stuff. 3. Josh Krajcik . Would have been number-one if we were basing this solely on Rock Week, considering he’s the only contestant who actually rocked . May not have the look of a star, but has the voice and the backstory. 4. Marcus Canty . He can’t hit every note, but the guy can dance and entertain! Hard to believe he wouldn’t be a successful solo artist, although the professional R&B field is quite crowded. 5. Chris Rene . Loved his take on “Gangsta’s Paradise” and the Bob Marley medley last week , even if it made little sense under the Rock theme. Lacks vocal range, but not charisma. 6. Rachel Crow . Fading a bit, as Ryniewicz has stolen her young contestant thunder. How far can simply being adorable get her? 7. Lakoda Rayne . A bit over-the-top. There are so many costumes, so much crazy lighting, so much going on at all times. It’s hard to know where to look. 8. Leroy Bell . He’s not going to win. 9. Astro . Based on talent alone? Of course he deserves a higher spot. But last week’s antics were nauseating and he only gets a slight pass for being 15. Drew and Rachel are even younger – and can you imagine either one reacting that way?
