Danny Brown Admits Drug Habit, Failed G-Unit Deal

’50 was with it; he just didn’t sign me because of my jeans,’ Detroit MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Danny Brown Photo: MTV News Jay-Z once rapped that 30 is the new 20, but Danny Brown is at ease with his age — so much so that the Detroit MC dedicated his latest mixtape, XXX, to the big 3-0. At this point, Brown is comfortable as an individual, and that in itself is a double-edged sword. It is DB’s individuality that has earned him a cult following of fans, which he dubs the Bruisers, and it is that same sense of self that cost the rapper a deal with 50 Cent’s G-Unit Records. “I just turned 30. I been writing raps all my life, but I remember the time when I was, like, 14, 15; I was like, ‘Imagine what I’m gonna be like when I’m 20. Yo, imagine what I’m gonna be like when I’m 30,’ ” Brown told Mixtape Daily. “Now I’m finally 30.” The mixtape, which many have dubbed “Triple X,” isn’t a nod to pornography, but rather a play on the Roman numeral for 30. It’s an important time for the rapper, who recently signed to indie label Fool’s Gold. He is finally seeing his rap dreams come true, but with that realization also came drug addiction. “Most of the stuff that I talk about is stuff that I’ve done in the past. But where is my life at right now, at 30?” Brown rhetorically asked. “At 30, my life is: I’ve been trying to get in this industry for over 10 years, and through me trying to get into that industry, I can say I developed a drug habit.” Brown admits to smoking marijuana, but then again, so do most rappers. Adderall, however, is not a hip-hop drug of choice. The stimulant is used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy, and for Brown, it helps him record and live his rock-star lifestyle. He even raps about the drug on “Adderall Admiral,” a track from XXX. “Eatin’ on an Adderall, wash it down with alcohol/ Writin’ holy mackerel actual or factual,” he raps before embarking on his patented free-associative rhyme patterns over a herky-jerky beat. “I got to the point that I was just taking Adderall to work on music, then it got to the point where I wanted to take Adderall to stay up late and party,” Brown said. “So now, from me trying Adderall, I’ve tried other drugs too.” On XXX, DB remains an open book. He contemplates his fate on “Die Like a Rockstar,” shouting the names of deceased celebrities like River Phoenix, Brittany Murphy and Heath Ledger. “Pac Blood” finds Brown rapping over a sample of Bob James’ classic “Nautilus,” and on “Lie4,” he bucks standard rap fare by freely admitting his financial woes. Danny Brown is certainly one of rap’s most unique figures in recent memory, which can also be a disadvantage. In 2010, Brown befriended G-Unit rapper Tony Yayo, and together they recorded their collaborative Hawaiian Snow mixtape . The G-Unit association led many to wonder if Brown would eventually sign with 50’s crew . But Brown, who favors fitted jeans and a vintage rock-inspired wardrobe, didn’t fit the part of G-Unit soldier. “It was a real thing. 50 was with it; he just didn’t sign me because of my jeans. He liked the music, but he didn’t like the way I looked,” Danny said. “I understand where they were coming from with that, but you gotta understand where I’m coming from too: I’m from Detroit.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Ashley Hebert: J.P. Rosenbaum is My Rock!

J.P. Rosenbaum certainly gave Ashley Hebert – and TV audiences across the country – a happy ending last night when he nervously popped the question. The 26-year-old dental student from Philadelphia accepted J.P.’s marriage proposal immediately. From a man she calls “my rock,” was there ever a doubt? “We complement each other so well,” Hebert said today on Good Morning America, the couple’s first, live TV appearance together as an engaged couple. Ashley on JP: “He’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.” The couple announced that Ashley Hebert and J.P. Rosenbaum will soon be living in the same city after she relocates to New York in the near future. That said, they have no plans to rush down the aisle. “She’s going to move to New York City, finish up school,” J.P. said. “We’re going to find a place, she’ll get a job, we’ll get settled and then we’re going to talk about a wedding … Maybe fall of next year, or end of next year.” The Bachelorette season finale is in the books, but for Ashley, 26, and J.P., 34, they feel that only now can their lives can finally begin. While Rosenbaum delivered his proposal to Hebert months ago in Fiji, proclaiming to her, “You mean the world to me and I want to be with you forever,” the duo were not able to publicly celebrate their engagement be. “It was kind of fun at first, to keep the secret,” Hebert said on GMA . “But then, towards the end, we were ready to kind of come out in the open.” Perhaps someone not ready for the couple to come out, however, was the man who was left standing in Fiji with an unclaimed engagement ring, 28-year-old winemaker Ben Flajnik, whose proposal Hebert rejected. “She didn’t have what we have with any other guy,” Rosenbaum said of any worries he had that Hebert would choose Flajnik over him. “For the most part, I knew that she didn’t have what we had with anyone else.” What do you think? Is he right? Will they last? Vote:

Young Jeezy Says TM 103 Release Is ‘Locked’

‘It’s time to go!’ the Snowman tells MTV News of long-awaited album’s September 20 drop date. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Young Jeezy Photo: MTV News Young Jeezy is ready to go. After numerous delays and setbacks, the Snowman tells MTV News that the release date for his next solo album, TM 103, is set in stone. “It’s locked, it’s dead-locked. It’s time to go! September 20, how y’all want it,” he said. The album — Jeezy’s fourth and the third in his Thug Motivation series — first started creating a buzz in 2009, when it was expected to be given a 2010 release. Singles like “Lose My Mind,” “All White Everything,” “Jizzle” and the Lil Wayne-assisted “Ballin’ ” came and went, while the album remained in limbo. But on Monday night at his New York City concert celebrating the six-year anniversary of his debut album, Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101, Jeezy announced the rock-solid September 20 date. Backstage at a second TM 101 show in Atlanta on Tuesday, Jeezy explained that he wasn’t about to tarnish his reputation as an artist just to make that 2010 release date. “One thing you gotta know about Young is I’m three for three,” he said, speaking of the quality of his previous albums. “I’m on my own time. I’m the boss — I’m not rushing myself for nothing. “At the end of the day, I’m not about to give nobody no music to make a deadline, I’m gonna give them something to live and die by. If it ain’t classic, it ain’t monumental, I don’t want to be a part of it. I make hits, man. I make classics. I can’t just give somebody something just ’cause it’s time. It’s better late than never baby, trust.” Jeezy is particularly excited about his new single “Shake Life.” The track, which was produced by Lil Lody, samples from Toto’s 1978 song “Georgy Porgy” and on it, Jeezy raps about how he was counted out of the game, the war in Iraq and the ills of his former Atlanta neighborhood. “I just put out ‘Shake Life,’ it’s crazy. It’s a special record to me,” he said. “It’s just one of those records to uplift. But if you’re worried about club bangers, I got an album full of those sh–s, too easy.” Are you looking forward to Jeezy’s TM 103 ? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Young Jeezy

Sarah Hyland Is A Sexy Cheerleader

I’m aware that Sarah Hyland is not a teenager, she just plays one on TV, but she isn’t exactly doing a very good job at debunking the myth that she’s underage by wearing a cheerleader outfit like this. Luckily, I know she’s over eighteen and don’t feel like too much of a creepy old man enjoying these shots. Creepy would be lying under the stairs of her trailer all afternoon.

Beverly McClellan Discusses Improbable Run on The Voice, Next Career Moves

“I’m a mixture of blues and rock with a shot of Southern Comfort.” – Beverly McClellan The openly lesbian, bald rocker who made it all the way to the finals of NBC’s The Voice calls herself a Janis Joplin-Melissa Etheridge-Etta James hybrid. That’s quite a statement, but the Florida native proved with her recent run on the reality hit that she’s got the vocal chops to make such a bold claim. Excerpts from Beverly’s interview with TV Line this week … Beverly McClellan and Christina Aguilera – Beautiful On her reaction to success on The Voice : “Where the hell did the rock and roll go? Epic moments were made: We need those again. I have no fear.” “I’m a bit of a rebel, a kid that never grew up. I feel like I’m finally, for once in my life, where I need to be, showing the right people, even if it’s not something I planned on doing: Come out here and get famous.” “I thought, “S***, I have just as much chance as anyone else.” Am I blown away that I came this far? Yeah. But I don’t want to slow the train down.” On making the finals (finishing right behind Dia Frampton and Javier Colon ) as an openly gay singer : “Listen, dude, we’ve got to be the change we want to see. I have to set that precedent for myself.” “I can lay down at night and think, ‘Wow. I did everything in a way that I can live with myself.’ And the children are our future: How can we show them a different way if we don’t continue it with every step we take?” “Doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and be a bit of a rebel, but break the right rules. There are the ones that need to be broken. I’ve never not lived out loud, and I’ve known my sexuality since a young age – kindergarten, really.” Beverly McClellan – Piece Of My Heart (On The Voice) On her blind audition: “Honey, I didn’t go out there set for them to not turn around: I went out there with the Sword of Troy. I was singing so hard my veins were popping out of my head, and I could see the spit slinging from my mouth.” “And just in that split instant I saw Christina and Adam turn around, and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s on now.’ [ Laughs .] Of course I had to go with Christina: Why freaking not? She sings her face off. She’s an icon.” The Voice Battle Round – Beverly McClellan vs. Justin Grennan On the battle round with Justin Grennan : “We sat and we practiced. And it was royally wonderful. So at the end of the day it was just a matter if they wanted shrimp or chicken, because they’re both awesome.” America needs to watch out, ’cause they’re not even ready for what’s coming to them: Beverly McClellan, Vicci Martinez, Emily Valentine, Tyler Robinson, Kelsey Rey, and so many other folks from The Voice . And the list goes on. On what’s next : “Everything! America needs to watch out, ’cause they’re not even ready for what’s coming to them: Beverly McClellan, Vicci Martinez, Emily Valentine, Tyler Robinson, Kelsey Rey, and so many other folks from The Voice .”

Rise Against’s ‘Make It Stop’ Tackles Bullying, Suicide

Tim McIlrath’s band teams with ‘It Gets Better’ campaign for new video. By James Montgomery Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath Photo: Getty Images For more than a decade now, Tim McIlrath has been fighting the good fight. And during that time, he’s watched his band, Rise Against , rise from scrappy VFW Hall stalwarts to genuine rock-radio mainstays. But somewhere along the way, he began to notice RA’s agit-punk, certifiably progressive politics were getting lost in the mix. And needless to say, this bothered him. “Rise Against is a band that, we’ve played punk-rock dives and basements, that’s where we started, and at some point, we were adopted by a much-larger rock scene,” he told MTV News. “And when we were introduced to that rock scene, I found there were people that were unsure about who we are or where we stood on things … I found a lot of fans who were unsure about how we felt about if our fans were gay, and that broke my heart, to think that any one of our fans might even question for a second where we stand on that.” So, with those questions weighing on his mind, McIlrath headed into the studio with his band to begin work on what would become Rise Against’s sixth studio album, Endgame. It was during that process that the suicide of Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi began making national news, bringing to light the rather-troubling issue of bullying and the plight of gay teenagers in the U.S. As he had done throughout Rise Against’s career, McIlrath knew he had to speak up — especially since none of his radio-clogging contemporaries seemed willing to do so. “When the month of September rolled around, and the wave of gay-teen suicides happened, I realized there needed to be a song about this, and also because the rock scene in general kind of fails to comment about this stuff — it sort of doesn’t comment about this stuff; it largely ignores this kind of thing,” he said. “And rock being a male-dominated, testosterone-driven place that I’ve been in the eye of the hurricane now for several years, I realized that it can be a place that can perpetuate homophobic behavior unless it’s addressed by bands like us.” McIlrath wrote “Make It Stop (September’s Children),” a song that deals explicitly with the issues of bullying, homophobia and suicides within the LGBT community. His message is one of hope: Yes, life does improve once the years of high school hell recede into memory; you’ve just got to find the strength not to give up. “The message is: It can get better, it does get better, give it a chance to get better, don’t end your life prematurely,” he said. “And don’t give credence to all these bullies that would give you all this crap and try to make your adolescence something that’s hard to deal with.” In the new video for the song, Rise Against team up with Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” campaign to help provide hope to those in need. The clip — shot in McIlrath’s former stomping grounds, Rolling Meadows High School in Illinois — follows three teens as they are pushed to the brink by their cruel classmates, and it’s only when they find themselves at the (very literal) end of their ropes, do they realize that they have much to live for, and they resolve to press on. Although McIlrath will be the first to admit that it’s just one song and one video, he said that if “Make It Stop” can even inspire even one teen from taking his or her life — regardless of sexual orientation — then he’ll consider it a success. And by speaking out, he hopes he’ll inspire others to follow suit. “I think that bullying is something that’s existed for a long time, obviously, and will, in a lot of ways, always exist, but I think it’s important now to bring this issue to light and to talk about it because there are certain dots we can connect, as Americans, to look at what is producing the bullying that is happening today,” he said. “We live in a country that has legislation that still treats the gay community as second-class citizens. That’s going to trickle down to our high school communities, it’s going to trickle down to our kids … and as long as we have these types of laws on the books, as long as we have TV networks masquerading as news stations that are perpetuating really violent and anti-gay rhetoric, that’s going to trickle down. “There are very real solutions to this, I believe. It isn’t just this intangible, ‘Oh, there’s always been bullies, there always will be bullies’ — it’s more than that, and it’s coming to a head now,” he continued. “And a lot of the suicides of September 2010 are the product of a culture and a media that we can really address, that we can really do something [about] and provide solutions for.” Share your opinion on “Make It Stop (September’s Children)” in the comments below!

‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Sean Bean Shares In Fans’ Shock

Actor talks about his initial reaction to the ‘heroic’ turn of events in ‘Baelor.’ Spoiler alert! By Kara Warner Sean Bean in “Game of Thrones” Photo: Helen Sloan/ HBO So how about Sunday night’s episode of “Game of Thrones” ? To say that it was a doozy barely scratches the surface of all the shameless double-crossing and bloodshed that occurred. SPOILER ALERT! : For those who haven’t yet watched “Baelor” (or read the novel), do not read any further. MAJOR, major spoilers ahead. A recap can hardly do justice to the episode’s gruesome events, which have been adapted quite faithfully from author George R.R. Martin’s brilliant plot twists and turns, but we can provide you with a video interview of “Game of Thrones” star Sean Bean talking about the big “event.” “It’s quite heroic, I suppose,” Bean told MTV News of the lead into his character’s shocking death scene. “I didn’t just get knocked off and nobody notices. Plenty of people noticed,” he said with a smile. “It was a good one.” Bean said that when he read Martin’s book, Ned Stark’s death was as much of a shock to him as anyone. “He’s such a predominant character, straight through all of it, and you think, ‘Wait a minute, what’s happening?’ He’s obviously been betrayed left and right and center, but you never thought it would come to this,” he admitted. “Even the shock on his face before it happens it’s like, ‘But we made a deal.’ It’s a pretty awful ending and the kids are watching as well.” Bean said that the short-lived role was amazing to play, and the filming of his final scene was appropriately epic and ambitious. “We were in Malta in the middle of a big square,” he recalled. “A big piazza with hundreds and hundreds of people on a raised platform, I’m making a last speech, I have my hands tied behind back. I kind of say that I have betrayed the realm and I have been a traitor in order to save my children. … It’s real heartbreaking stuff.” But as Martin fans well know, this doesn’t mean the end of shocking twists in the series, because, as Cersei Lannister put it, “In the game of thrones, you win, or you die.” What did you think of this shocking turn of events? Head over to the MTV Movies blog to vote in our “Game of Thrones” poll !
