J. Cole To Open Eminem/Jay-Z New York Concerts

Roc Nation MC will warm up Home and Home Tour crowds. By Mawuse Ziegbe J. Cole Photo: C. Flanigan/FilmMagic One of Jay-Z’s promising Roc Nation signees will warm up the crowd when Hov and Eminem’s Home and Home Tour hits NYC. Fayetteville, North Carolina, MC J. Cole will open for the hip-hop gods when their joint show heads to Yankee Stadium next week, according to RapRadar.com . The Warm Up mixtape rapper will open the show along with VMA nominee B.o.B, who worked his magic at the tour’s Detroit outings. Upstart MC J. Cole is the latest addition to a tour lineup that has been heavy on historic appearances from rap greats. Inimitable beatmaster and hip-hop pioneer Dr. Dre, G-Unit boss 50 Cent and Toronto star Drake all surprised thousands of fans at Jigga and Shady’s Comerica Park shows last week. The opening slot is another milestone in what has shaped up to be a major year for Cole. After becoming the first artist to ink a deal with Jay’s Roc Nation imprint and stepping out on tour with the rock-star MC last year , Cole was dubbed a Freshman ’10 rapper by XXL magazine in March . The same month, the MC headlined his first NYC show, ably satisfying the city’s finicky music fans. In July, he was a top-five finalist for MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” and can be heard on the smoky hit R&B single “All I Want Is You” from fellow newcomer Miguel. Cole’s single “Who Dat” has hit the airwaves, and the rising lyricist told MTV News earlier this year that he’s checking out the successful blueprint his mentor Jay established when it comes to rolling out his debut LP. “You might have an incredible single or an incredible song, and if you just set it up the wrong way, it won’t go as far as it could’ve went,” he said. “I feel like Jay’s last album had the perfect setup, single-wise. So it’s really about finding the right setup, and then from there, it’s up to the people to decide.” Before Eminem heads to New York, he’ll be opening the 2010 VMAs on Sunday night in Los Angeles. Are you going to the Home and Home shows in NYC? What are you expecting from the concerts? Let us know in the comments below! The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Rich Cronin’s Former LFO Bandmates Continue Their Music Careers

Brad Fischetti and Devin Lima have both stayed in the business since band split up in 2002. By Gil Kaufman LFO Photo: Arista After his band’s spotlight faded, LFO singer Rich Cronin, who passed away Wednesday , spent his time writing songs for other singers and appearing on VH1’s 2007 reality show “Mission: Man Band,” in which he tried to revive his career alongside some other boy band veterans. But what became of Cronin’s fellow Lyte Funky Ones? A day after Cronin died at the age of 35, former LFO member Brad Fischetti spoke to spoke to Entertainment Weekly . “He was one of the funniest people on the planet,” said Fischetti, who was hoping to mount a tour with Cronin and third member Devin Lima later this year as a follow-up to a successful set of reunion shows in 2009. “Nobody could tell a story like Rich. He used to say, ‘Never let a few facts get in the way of a good story.’ ” Fischetti recalled the day in 2005 when he found out Cronin had leukemia, and how the “Summer Girls” singer/songwriter thought he’d never be able to perform again. “None of us thought we’d ever be on the stage again as LFO,” said Fischetti. “He fought hard, man. He beat leukemia twice. And beat a stroke. He was a fighter.” Fischetti has kept a low profile since LFO split up in 2002, preferring to remain behind the scenes and nurture new talent through his label 111 Records . He did record a solo album, Sari , in 2007; at the time he described its sound as a mix of Coldplay, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and Radiohead. 111 has released albums by former LFO bassist Dan Walters, Kiernan McMullan, the Spill Canvas, Canon, Inkwell, the Windupdeads and Rookie of the Year. Fischetti said the reunion tour last summer reminded him of the special bond the trio had during their late-’90s peak. Cronin was weakened by chemotherapy, a stem-cell transplant and a stroke that left him with such severe leg pain that Fischetti and Lima had to help the singer get dressed before shows and carry him on stage. But the tour was still a highlight. “He was so happy,” Fischetti said. “We really became soul mates. Devin and I both realized how much we loved him, despite the differences we had in the past. In New York City at the Highline Ballroom, he thanked the crowd at the end of the show. I’ll always have that voice in my mind, because it was such a sincere thank you. Really, that’s the memory that’s sticking out in my brain.” Lima released his first solo track in 2006, a cover of the Sly & the Family Stone song “If You Want Me To Stay” for the tribute album Different Strokes by Different Folks . Though it caused some head-scratching at the time, it led to him performing in a tribute to Stone on the 2006 Grammy Awards alongside Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Maroon 5, Joss Stone, John Legend and will.i.am. Lima released Mozart Popart , his first album with his band Cadbury Diesel, in 2008. The disc helped push Lima past the bubblegum tunes of his past, thanks to the rock and roll feel of songs like “Hangin’ With You” and the soulful R&B tune “Me Veda.” Fischetti and Lima are currently collaborating on a new hip-hop project called The Xiles . They released a Christmas EP last year and revealed in December that they’d already begun recording their debut album, American Genie: Volume 1 . Related Artists LFO (Lyte Funky Ones)

Evidence of second fast north-south pole flip found

The Earth's magnetic poles flip around every 200,000 years or so, with north becoming south and vice versa. Normally, the process takes 4-5,000 years and it ought to be impossible for the flip to be much faster, if models of the Earth's core are correct, but now for the second time evidence has been found of a flip that appears to have taken only a few years. The first time evidence was discovered of a rapid geomagnetic field reversal was in 1995 when well-preserved lava flows were found at Steens Mountain in Oregon in the US. Research on the rocks by a team led by geologist Scott Bogue of the Occidental College in Los Angeles revealed the lava flow had an unusual magnetic pattern that suggested the magnetic field had been shifting over 10,000 times faster than normal, at six degrees a day. The magnetic patterns are preserved within the magnetic crystals in the lava, formed as the lava flow cooled. The first findings remained controversial and many scientists have challenged the fast flip-flop theory, but now Bogue and colleague Jonathan Glen of the US Geological Survey have found evidence in ancient lava rock in Battle Mountain, Nevada of a second fast flip, dated around 15 million years ago. The record in one particular lava flow in Nevada suggests the magnetic field moved by 53 degrees in a single year. The lava started to cool, but was then heated again within a year as it was buried under fresh lava. The crystals in the rock were re-magnetized by the fresh lava, producing a shift of 53 degrees. This finding could mean the poles swapped over a period of only four years, but Brogue said it could also suggest there was a rapid acceleration period within the steady movement of the field. According to some geologists a polarity reversal is overdue, since the Earth’s magnetic field has been weakening for the last century, and the last stable reversal was about 780,000 years ago. Even if it was a super-fast flip-flop, however, it would not be noticeable to most people. No one is certain why such reversals take place, although many scientists believe they are connected in some way with the convective movements of the liquid iron in the Earth’s outer core. http://www.physorg.com/news202971192.html added by: pjacobs51

Mel Gibson Crashes Car Into Hillside

Actor is unhurt after Malibu accident. By Jocelyn Vena Mel Gibson Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It’s been a rough year for Mel Gibson. First, damaging messages he allegedly left ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva were leaked. Now, Gibson was involved in a car accident Sunday near Malibu. TMZ reports that the actor was driving his 2008 Maserati around 8:35 p.m. when he struck a hillside in the California town. According to the California Highway Police report, “For unknown reasons, Mr. Gibson steered his car to the right and struck the rock hillside. He stopped his car at the scene and was contacted by officers from the West Valley CHP Area.” Gibson was not hurt and “DUI is not suspected in the accident,” according to officials. “Mr. Gibson supplied all the pertinent information to the officers at the scene, gave a statement and received a ride home from a friend,” the report continues. CHP spokesman Leland Tang spoke to TMZ about the incident and said Gibson’s accident “was totally an unintentional act.” No charges will be filed, and no citation was given in connection to the incident. “Gibson told officers in the field he did not know how the car drifted out of the lane and into the hillside,” Tang added. A rep for Gibson told People magazine that “he’s fine.” E! Online reports that Gibson had just returned from a fishing vacation in Fiji, where he was joined by his sons. Gibson is next expected to give a deposition in a custody case with Grigorieva over their 9-month-old daughter, Lucia, as well as the domestic-violence investigation.

Green Day Bring The Power, Phoenix Add The Finesse: Saturday At Lollapalooza

Saturday night’s headliners were a scintillating study of contrasts. Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong performs at Lollapalooza on Saturday Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News CHICAGO — Unless you happen to play in one of Perry Farrell’s bands (and that band happens to be Jane’s Addiction), the opportunity to headline Lollapalooza doesn’t come around all that often. So, if you get your shot, you might as well go for it. And that was very much the mindset of both of Saturday’s (August 7) bill-toppers, though, much like Friday night’s Lady Gaga/Strokes face-off , Green Day and Phoenix were a study in contrasts. Both definitely rocked, they just did in very different ways. Green Day, of course, pummeled, powered, and pulled out all the stops during their two-plus hour set, reaching deep into their expansive back catalog and using every crowd-pleasing trick in the rock-band hat. And then they invented a few more stunts just for the sake of it. Seriously, if it weren’t for the city of Chicago’s noise ordinances, they’d probably still be at it. Bottle-blonde Billie Joe Armstrong bounded back and forth across the stage, led the crowd in countless sing-a-longs, pranced, danced, collapsed, rose again, and at one point, played a solo with his guitar behind his head. While standing on one leg. He pulled kids young and old from the crowd–letting them sing choruses (on “East Jesus Nowhere”) or entire songs (“Longview,” which was belted out by a kid who totally, completely killed it), assisting them in stage dives, or fire off water cannons. He shouted “Chicago!” more times than the entire Daley clan combined. He donned a feather boa. He mooned the crowd. He fired off T-shirt cannons and toilet paper guns. And at no point did he appear to even be the slightest bit tired. “They said they’re gonna pull the plug on us at 10 … I told them to kiss my f–king ass, we’ll play for as long as we want,” he shouted at one point. “You paid your hard-earned money to buy a ticket to tonight,” he yelled later in the set. “It is my honor and my privilege to give you the best f—ing show you’ve ever seen in your life.” And judging by the boundless energy displayed by his Green Day mates, he wasn’t the only one feeling this way. Mike Dirnt scowled and strutted, always keeping his bass thuddingly precise. Tre Cool vamped it up on an extended version of the Isley Brother’s “Shout” (while wearing a sun hat, horn-rimmed spectacles and a red brazier, it should be noted), and kept the back beat cracking. At this point, Green Day are a poundingly precise Rock and Roll machine, as evidenced by the covers they effortlessly worked into the set–everything from the opening riffs of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” and the first verse of the Guns ‘N Roses “Sweet Child O’ Mine” to the chorus of the Beatles’ “Hey Jude”–and the sheer spectacle of their show, an eye-popping, ear-splitting series of pyro bursts and fireworks explosions. Oh, and obviously, the songs were pretty terrific too: “21st Century Breakdown” spanned several changes but was always focused and crowd-uniting, “Hitching A Ride” thundered along and eventually broke into a fiery crescendo, “She” was zip-gun speedy, and “Brain Stew/Jaded” started crunchy and static, stretched into a lengthy jam (complete with water/T-shirt cannon interlude), then came rifling home at a breakneck pace. There were a dozen other highlights. Simply put, Green Day know how to put on a rock show. A big, loud, bombastic one. And when they finally closed with “Jesus of Suburbia,” they certainly didn’t need a break … but the crowd might very well have. Meanwhile, on the other side of Grant Park, there was a rock show of a different sort happening. On the one hand, Phoenix aren’t the typical Lollapalooza headliner. For one thing, they are French — as in, extremely French. Their brand of European formalism doesn’t necessarily jive with the freewheeling energy on the grounds at Lolla. Then again, they’re really the ideal headliner for Saturday night. Their jaunty mix of jangly indie rock, easy singalong melodies and groovy, dance-friendly electronic froth sound like the favorite band of one of the characters on Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party record. After a warm day at Lollapalooza, they provided a soothing antidote to the heat and the growing exhaustion among the festival-goers. Their smooth, easy tunes cascaded over Grant Park and engulfed the thousands gathered in a swirl of Euro-disco-rock giddiness. Frontman Thomas Mars seemed genuinely touched by the heavy crowd gathered for their headlining set. They turned up the energy immediately, kicking off the set with “Lisztomania,” the kickoff track from their Grammy-winning album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix . Though the clearly committed crowd greeted the group’s older tunes (like “Long Distance Call” and “Everything Is Everything”) warmly, it was the Wolfgang songs that really won the evening. The ubiquitous “1901” surfed its killer synth riff into the ether, while “Lasso” inspired all sorts of manic dance moves among the revelers. It was a fitting end to a funky, groovy day at Lollapalooza. Cut Copy preempted the Phoenix set with a batch of pounding beat science, Spoon brought a classic rock swagger to their deep catalog, AFI super-charged the afternoon with a blast of glammy goth and Against Me! laid out the huge riffs of White Crosses for a refreshing aggro jolt. With 48 hours of Lollapalooza in the books, the energy remains high and the performances continue to deliver in surprising ways. Just probably not at the same level Green Day did. Or Phoenix, too. Lady Gaga Joins Semi Precious Weapons Onstage At Lollapalooza

‘It was pretty amazing,’ frontman Justin Tranter tells MTV News of Gaga jumping on drums. By Kyle Anderson Lady Gaga watches on stage as Semi Precious Weapons perform at the BMI Stage at Grant Park on Friday Photo: Daniel Boczarski/Redferns In the hours before Lady Gaga’s Friday night (August 6) set to close out the first night of Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park, the ubiquitous, world-conquering pop star made an early appearance onstage as part of the set by Semi Precious Weapons (her friends and the opening act on her Monster Ball Tour). Semi Precious Weapons frontman Justin Tranter breathlessly recounted the story while standing just in front of the stage where Gaga would be performing her full set in a matter of hours. “She came to watch us perform. She stood on the side of the stage, and then during the song ‘Magnetic Baby,’ she started playing drums with Dan,” he told MTV News. “Then she started singing backup vocals, then her and I made out, and then she stage-dove and then I joined her while she stage-dove. And then we made out while stage-diving. And then she left. It was pretty amazing.” The visit certainly came as a surprise to the men of Semi Precious Weapons, though it isn’t the first time the two entities have tag-teamed. “She used to get on stage with us all the time, but since she’s so famous, normally it’s not safe for her,” Tranter explained. “But she played the same stage we played three years ago, and I think she was so excited about us playing that stage, and she loves our band so much that she was overwhelmed by the rock and roll and just had to make it happen.” Tranter also told MTV News that this wouldn’t be the last you would see of Gaga collaborating with the band. “Gaga herself has plans to collaborate with us, both artistically and sexually,” he teased. After a whirlwind day, Semi Precious Weapons declared themselves the victors of Lollapalooza’s Friday. “Tonight, in 2010, at Lollapalooza, rock and roll officially is back,” Tranter said. “After Gaga is done, between our set and her set, they should just cancel the whole thing.” Are you looking forward to a collaboration between Gaga and SPW?
