Jared Leto ‘Blown Away’ By 30 Seconds To Mars’ VMA Noms

‘We’re so proud that a video that was an epic experience for us was recognized,’ Leto tells MTV News. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: EMI Music Jared Leto was probably the last person to learn about 30 Seconds to Mars’ Video Music Award nominations . After all, it was already Wednesday morning in New Zealand (16 hours ahead of us here in the U.S.) when he got the news. “I was in Auckland, and I woke up after a long slumber, looked over to my BlackBerry, and noticed that the red light seemed to be flashing with an added urgency,” Leto laughed. “So I reached over and quickly found out that this was a day that would go down in history for this little band of ours.” And rightfully so. After all, 30STM racked up four VMA nominations — more than any other rock act — with their “Kings and Queens” clip , including nods for Best Rock Video and Video of the Year. And immediately after learning the news, Leto reacted somewhat appropriately. “I was completely blown away. It was so unexpected that my first reaction was, ‘Holy f—ing sh– f— f— f—!’ ” he said. “We had no idea this was the way these things worked. It was the furthest thing from our minds. And then someone sent me the list of artists we’re nominated with, and we couldn’t believe that either. It really is exciting.” Leto wouldn’t speculate on his band’s chances of taking home a Moonman — “It truly is an honor just to be nominated,” he said — but in a lot of ways, he feels like he and his bandmates have already won. After all, the success of “Kings and Queens” not only came after a lengthy battle to get their album made , but it was born out of a collaboration with the band’s fans and friends. So the VMA noms are vindication, and they give Leto an opportunity to once again thank everyone who’s helped them along the way. “We’re so proud that a video that was an epic experience for us was recognized, because making it was a creative and beautiful journey that we still talk about fondly,” he said. “It’s a celebration, because it gives me a chance to say thanks to everyone who means so much to us, largely our fans, but everyone else who has supported us. It hasn’t always been this way for us. We’ve had to work so unbelievably hard, and we couldn’t have done it without some help.” Will you be rooting for 30 Seconds to Mars at the VMAs? VIDEO Pete Seeger & Mark Ruffalo Protest Oil & Gas Industry

Folk music icon Pete Seeger and actor Mark Ruffalo joined elected officials and environmental advocates in Albany, NY on Tuesday to warn that a new method of gas extraction is destructive, unpredictable, and a threat to public health. Ruffalo, a Sullivan County resident who recently appeared in the film The Kids Are Alright, held up a jar of water from a Pennsylvania town where the method of hydraulic fracturing (or hydro-fracking, for short) has contaminated the water supply. He warned that New Yorkers could suffer the same fate unless the state legislature takes action in the coming days. Seeger, a longtime environmental activist, composed a song about fracking for the event highlighting the similarities between natural gas extraction and oil drilling: “And when 'drill baby drill' turns to 'spill baby spill,' God’s counting on me – God's counting on you.” Hydro-fracking is a dirty, dangerous method of extracting gas from underground rock by drilling a well in the rock and then pumping thousands of gallons of a toxic soup of chemicals into the rock to create fissures that release the gas trapped inside. Many companies are seeking to ramp up gas production by starting hydro-fracking operations in NY state this year. Hydro-fracking has contaminated water across the country from Pennsylvania to Colorado and its effects are the subject of the new documentary GASLAND. NY's Dept of Environmental Conservation holds the authority to grant permits to oil and gas companies. The Dept has stated that it plans to allow hydro-fracking to begin despite pressure from a massive grassroots campaign has been waged across the state to “kill the drill.” One grassroots organization that has decided to fight the oil and gas industry on hydro-fracking on the national level is Frack Action. www.FrackAction.org added by: captainplanet71

Demi Lovato Wants To Embrace Her ‘Inner Soul’ Diva On Next Album

‘I’m straying away from the rock this time,’ the ‘Camp Rock 2’ star says of new R&B sound. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Demi Lovato Photo: Jesse Grant/Getty Images Last year, Demi Lovato released her pop/rock sophomore album, Here We Go Again, and now Lovato is, well, at it again. She’s back in the studio, but unlike her first two efforts, this one will sound a little less hardcore, as Demi embraces her inner-R&B diva. “I’m really excited for working on new music in the spare time that I have before I go out on tour with the Jonas Brothers,” she told MTV News on Monday in Los Angeles at the VH1 Do Something Awards . “I’m working on new music, writing new songs, trying to approach a different route, doing a new sound,” Lovato continued. “I’m really excited. It’ll be fun. It’s more R&B/pop. I’m trying to bring out my inner ‘soul’; a new side of Demi,” she laughed. “I’m straying away from the rock this time.” If Lovato’s enthusiasm about working on her next project wasn’t obvious already, her Twitter posts make it clear. A lot of her recent tweets have been updates about working on that new album or just gigging around with friends. “I’m literally in love with music . Everything I do in life is for music. If I could, I would marry music,” she wrote over the weekend. “Gathered around with friends playing music.. I live and breathe for these moments in my life. “Yes!!! Finished writing a song that I’m so proud to call my own!! It’s moments like these that make me never want to stop writing music.. :D,” Lovato tweeted just days before. “Writing a song that I think my South American fans will love…. 😉 this ones for you guys…. Just got the rough cut of the song we did yesterday… soooo excited right now!” Although it’ll be some time before fans actually get to hear these new songs, they can check out Lovato on her Disney Channel series “Sonny With a Chance.” Earlier this year, she teased some of what to expect during the rest of the season. “I think surprises will include guest stars, really awesome guest stars,” she told MTV News. “And also the romance between Sterling Knight’s character and Sonny. There’s definitely a romance factor, but it’s interesting because they play on rival shows and the casts aren’t really fond of each other. So, you see what happens.” Are you excited to hear what Demi sounds like singing R&B? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos Demi Lovato, Joe Jonas Attend The 2010 Do Something Awards

Ron Artest Returns To His Hometown In Queens

‘It’s great coming back as a champion,’ the New York native says. By Shaheem Reid Ron Artest Photo: MTV News No doubt about it, Ron Artest is up there with Allen Iverson as one of the most ‘hood-beloved, realest basketball players to ever run the court in the NBA. Ron-Ron, as his fans and family call him, was keeping it so gully when he returned to New York he rode the F train from Manhattan to the 21st Queensbridge stop, his old stomping grounds. “Today we rode the subway here,” Ron said, standing in a neighborhood park on the 40th side of Vernon Avenue. “I wanted to make it special — my neighborhood represented me with an award, so we rode the train all the way down here, came off the regular, walked to get the award. It gave me memories just of going to school, South Academy, Second Avenue. I smelled that train station, 34th street. I haven’t been on that train in 13 years.” Ron was presented with an award in the middle of Queensbridge. “Today we over in Queensbridge projects, biggest projects in America,” he explained. “We’re having a good day, good barbecue. I just got an award off of bringing home the championship and doing good things in the community. Today we gonna go to the park. Funk Flex is going to be there, EPMD, DJ Hot Day, [my artists] the Tru Warriors. I’m gonna be there. You gonna see a lot of performances. I did a song called ‘Champion’ last year. We’re gonna walk you through the neighborhood … shout-out to Nas, shout-out to Mobb Deep. “It’s great coming back as a champion,” Artest continued, with DJ Hot Day spinning records on a huge stage standing on a baseball field. “So many things that Queensbridge has done with music … basketball with Vern Flemming, Andy Walker a long time ago. Nas, Mobb Deep — this is another notch under our belt.” Artest endeared himself to viewers from his neighborhood by being vocal about his hometown pride, shouting out his Queensbridge home in post-game interviews. “A lot of support,” he said about what he experienced during the finals, in which the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Boston Celtics. “It was tough, because it was like being in a battle, being in a war — but [Queensbridge] stuck with me. They already know I was gonna come through. But a lot of people counted me out. From game to game, things kept changing. This is the most intense anything I’ve been a part of, the championship. To always represent my neighborhood, but never win [the championship], it was like I’m representing, but not really. So I gotta chance to really represent and it was great. “During the finals, it was dope,” he added about shouting out his native soil. “You representing your ‘hood. That was a sign that we never changed. That’s gotta be one of the realest things — entertainment-wise, as far as keeping it ‘hood — anyone has done. I’m glad to be at the forefront of that. I been representing my ‘hood for a long time. The only thing that’s new is that ring.” Related Artists Ron Artest

Guns N’ Roses To Perform At Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Rock ‘N Rev festival marks GN’R’s first official U.S. performance in four years. By James Montgomery Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Guns N’ Roses have spent much of the past year wreaking havoc across South America , and now, they’re bringing their fury to about the only place in the U.S. that can handle it: Sturgis, South Dakota. On Tuesday (July 20), organizers of the Rock ‘N Rev festival — held during the thoroughly gnarly Sturgis Motorcycle Rally — announced that GN’R had been added as closers on the fest’s final night, Friday, August 13. The fest marks the band’s first official U.S. performance in four years and their only North American show of 2010. The R’NR fest will take place August 9-13 at something called (and we’re not making this up) Monkey Rock USA . Other acts confirmed for the rock-centric fest include Daughtry, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Godsmack, Creed, 3 Doors Down, Hinder and Hellyeah. Tickets for R’NR run $45 per day or $150 for a five-day pass. There’s even a special VIP “platinum package” available for $1,000, which gets you access to private bars, luxury bathroom facilities and, of course, motorcycle parking (and that’s important). For more information, check out RockNRevFestival.com . The Sturgis show will be GN’R’s first official U.S. show since the final four dates of their 2006 Chinese Democracy Tour were canceled so Axl Rose could complete the much-delayed album of the same name, which was eventually released in 2008. Earlier this year, they played a “surprise” set for 100 lucky fans at a Fashion Week gig held at the John Varvatos boutique in New York City — which, incidentally, is the same space that used to house the legendary rock club CBGB. Will you take your motorcycle to see GN’R next month? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Guns N’ Roses

BP says it finally stops oil spewing from Gulf gusher

The oil has stopped. For now. After 85 days and up to 184 million gallons, BP finally gained control over one of America's biggest environmental catastrophes Thursday by placing a carefully fitted cap over a runaway geyser that has been gushing crude into the Gulf of Mexico since early spring. Though a temporary fix, the accomplishment was greeted with hope, high expectations — and, in many cases along the beleaguered coastline, disbelief. From one Gulf Coast resident came this: “Hallelujah.” And from another: “I got to see it to believe it.” If the cap holds, if the sea floor doesn't crack and if the relief wells being prepared are completed successfully, this could be the beginning of the end for the spill. But that's a lot of ifs, and no one was declaring any sort of victory beyond the moment. The oil stopped flowing at 3:25 p.m. EDT when the last of three valves in the 75-ton cap was slowly throttled shut. That set off a 48-hour watch period in which — much like the hours immediately after a surgery — the patient was in stable, guarded condition and being watched closely for complications. “It's a great sight,” said BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles, who immediately urged caution. The flow, he said, could resume. “It's far from the finish line. … It's not the time to celebrate.” Nevertheless, one comforting fact stood out: For the first time since an explosion on the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon oil rig killed 11 workers April 20 and unleashed the spill 5,000 feet beneath the water's surface, no oil was flowing into the Gulf. President Barack Obama, who has encouraged, cajoled and outright ordered BP to stop the leak, called Thursday's development “a positive sign.” But Obama, whose political standing has taken a hit because of the spill and accusations of government inaction, cautioned that “we're still in the testing phase.” The worst-case scenario would be if the oil forced down into the bedrock ruptured the seafloor irreparably. Leaks deep in the well bore might also be found, which would mean that oil would continue to flow into the Gulf. And there's always the possiblity of another explosion, either from too much pressure or from a previously unknown unstable piece of piping. The drama that unfolded quietly in the darkness of deep water Thursday was a combination of trial, error, technology and luck. It came after weeks of repeated attempts to stop the oil — everything from robotics to different capping techniques to stuffing the hole with mud and golf balls. The week leading up to the moment where the oil stopped was a series of fitful starts and setbacks. Robotic submarines working deep in the ocean removed a busted piece of pipe last weekend, at which point oil flowed unimpeded into the water. That was followed by installation of a connector that sits atop the spewing well bore — and by Monday the 75-ton metal cap, a stack of lines and valves latched onto the busted well. After that, engineers spent hours creating a map of the rock under the sea floor to spot potential dangers, like gas pockets. They also shut down two ships collecting oil above the sea to get an accurate reading on the pressure in the cap. As the oil flowed up to the cap, increasing the pressure, two valves were shut off like light switches, and the third dialed down on a dimmer switch until it too was choked off. And just like that, the oil stopped. It's not clear yet whether the oil will remain bottled in the cap, or whether BP will choose to use the new device to funnel the crude into four ships on the surface. For nearly two months, the world's window into the disaster has been through a battery of BP cameras, known as the “spillcam.” The constant stream of spewing oil became a fixture on cable TV news and web feeds. That made it all the more dramatic on Thursday when, suddenly, it was no more. On the video feed, the violently churning cloud of oil and gas coming out of a narrow tube thinned, and tapered off. Suddenly, there were a few puffs of oil, surrounded by cloudy dispersant that BP was pumping on top. Then there was nothing. “Finally!” said Renee Brown, a school guidance counselor visiting Pensacola Beach, Fla., from London, Ky. “Honestly, I'm surprised that they haven't been able to do something sooner, though.” Alabama Gov. Bob Riley's face lit up when he heard the news. “I think a lot of prayers were answered today,” he said. The next 48 hours are critical. Engineers and scientists will be monitoring the cap around the clock, looking for pressure changes. High pressure is good, because it shows there's only a single leak. Low pressure, below 6,000 pounds per square inch or so, could mean more leaks farther down in the well. Thad Allen, the retired Coast Guard admiral overseeing the spill for the government, said they are deciding as they go along whether to release oil into the water again. At the end of the 48-hour test it's possible oil will start to flow again — but, theoretically, in a controlled manner. When the test is complete, more seafloor mapping will be done to detect any damage or deep-water leaks. added by: JanforGore

Pete Quaife, Bassist for The Kinks, Has Died

Kinks bassist Pete Quaife dead at 66 Pete Quaife, the original bassist of the Kinks, has died, according to bandmate Ray Davies. Quaife was 66. Quaife died of kidney failure Wednesday in Herlev, Denmark. He moved to Denmark in 2005 after many years in Canada. He had recently gotten engaged to his partner, Elisabeth. “I am overwhelmed with emotion- I literally can't speak- we might never have done any of this without him,” said Kinks guitarist Dave Davies in a statement on his website, davedavies.com. “The Kinks were never really the Kinks without you.” Peter Alexander Greenlaw Quaife – as he was listed on the back cover of the band's 1968 masterpiece, “The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society” – was the bassist during the band's British Invasion height, playing on such hits as “You Really Got Me,” “All Day and All of the Night,” “Tired of Waiting for You,” “A Well-Respected Man” and “Sunny Afternoon.” In John Mendelssohn's 1985 biography of the band, “The Kinks Kronikles,” producer Shel Talmy called him the most musical of the four-man group. The Kinks – made up of guitarist/vocalist Ray Davies (the band's primary songwriter), Ray's brother Dave and drummer Mick Avory along with Quaife – originally formed in 1961, with Quaife a co-founder. With its hard-driving power chords and distortion, 1964's “You Really Got Me,” the band's third single, has been called a forerunner of heavy metal. But the complicated relationship between the Davies brothers was also a forerunner of that of other angry rock 'n' roll siblings, such as Oasis' Gallagher brothers, and Quaife briefly left the band in 1966 after being injured in an accident – a period he described as “a good break for me” given the discord. He returned a few months later. The Kinks had a fallow commercial period in America from about 1966 until 1969 – ironically a period of some of the band's most notable albums, including 1966's “Face to Face,” 1967's “Something Else by the Kinks” and “Village Green Preservation Society.” Quaife left after the release of that album and the single “Days” to join a band called Maple Oak. He was replaced by John Dalton for the next Kinks album, 1969's “Arthur.” The Kinks were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and Quaife played with them at the showcase concert. Quaife is survived by a daughter, Camilla, from a previous marriage. http://img177.imageshack.us/i/thekinksje3.jpg/ added by: EthicalVegan

Katy Perry Previews Teenage Dream At Beach-Themed Party

‘It looks like it’s going to be a sleepless year,’ Perry says at NYC listening party. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Katy Perry will release her new album, Teenage Dream, on August 24, but she’s getting an early start on creating buzz with beach-party-themed industry listening events. On Monday night, Perry brought her West Coast vibe to the East Coast, filling the Espace venue with beach balls, sand and lots of funky pop tunes. On the eve of her “California Gurls” video premiere , Perry played a number of other tracks off the album that mirrored that song’s bouncy, summertime pop feel. The title track, the album’s reported second single, picks up right where “California Gurls” leaves off. With a strong beat to back her up, Perry sings about a boy who makes her feel like a teenager again. The next track, which she told the crowd was her “f—ing opus,” is a shimmering tune that plays up Perry’s vocals and gives a slightly orchestral feel during the song’s chorus. Perry next played her party anthem “Last Friday Night,” which she explained had a purpose for being on the album: “There’s a lot of substance … but also some no brainers.” She likened the song to “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyes Peas. The midtempo party track recalls all the fun had in past nights. Perry displays some angst on the rock-tinged breakup anthem “Circle the Drain.” On it, Perry sings about leaving behind a lover or friend with a substance problem. Perry slowed things down with the ballad, “Pearl,” about a girl who was once a lighthearted woman until someone came along and changed her. She eventually switches the script, and it becomes an empowering song about change. But the general vibe of the album is levity and partying, emphasized by dance track “The One That Got Away” and the cheerleader-ish, double-entendre-filled “Peacock.” The final song previewed is the dreamy, midtempo ode to love, “Not Like the Movies.” Later on, MTV News caught up with Perry, who talked about her strategy of previewing these songs for people. “It’s really exciting to do these little beach party, Katy Perry, Teenage Dream listening parties. It’s funner — I love that word that doesn’t exist — it’s funner to do it in this environment, where it’s just free and fun and there’s a couple of drinks, people are eating, people are socializing, seeing people they haven’t seen in a while. “It looks like it’s going to be a sleepless year,” she continued. “It’s gonna be really fun. I think we’re going to do these type of things, especially for the fans. We’re just starting to roll the record out, and it’s all beginning again. Although I don’t feel like I’m back. I feel like it’s a continuum.” Are you excited for Katy Perry’s new album? What’s your favorite beach party music? Talk about it in the comments.
