Paul Conrad Dies at 86 | Pulitizer Prize-Winning Political Cartoonist Made Him One of Leading Provocateurs | Helped Push The Los Angeles Times to National Prominence

He was 86. ' Paul Conrad dies at 86; Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist helped bring The Los Angeles Times to national prominence http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-paul-conrad-20100905,0,3650589,full… . PART ONE… By James Rainey, Los Angeles Times September 4, 2010|12:52 p.m. Paul Conrad, whose fiercely confrontational editorial cartoons made him one of the leading political provocateurs of the second half of the 20th century and who helped push the Los Angeles Times to national prominence, has died. He was 86. Conrad died early Saturday of natural causes, surrounded by his family at his home in Rancho Palos Verdes, said his son David. Conrad won three Pulitzer Prizes, a feat matched by only two other cartoonists in the post- World War II era, while both thrilling and infuriating readers for more than 50 years with an unyielding liberal stance, rendered in savage black and white. Mayors, governors and presidents cringed at the prospect of being on the business end of Conrad's searing pen, while many Southern Californians made him their first stop as they sifted through The Times, the newspaper that was his principal home for nearly 30 years. While many other cartoonists angled for whimsy or the easy one-off, Conrad “specialized in hair shirts and jeremiads and harpoons to the heart,” former Times Editor Shelby Coffey III once wrote. The cartoonist, loud and often profane in person, viewed himself as a champion of the common man and relished combat with those he saw as protectors of the rich and privileged. His most prominent and enduring foils came in the person of two California politicians who rose to the presidency, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. The scandal-plagued Nixon named Conrad to his “enemies list” — a designation the cartoonist described as one of his greatest honors. Former Times Publisher Otis Chandler became accustomed to his breakfast being interrupted by either Reagan or wife Nancy, furious that the then-governor had been depicted, again, as dimwitted, mean-spirited or out of touch. “Conrad is … more than a legend in cartooning and an institution in American journalism,” Doug Marlette, one of many cartoonists inspired by that work, once said. “He is a force of nature; you measure Conrad on the Richter scale.” The author and essayist Pete Hamill called Conrad “a voice. And the voice is his alone: alternately savage, compassionate, brutal and ironic.” Conrad rose to prominence in a post-World War II era when many newspapers were at the height of their power and when he and other widely syndicated editorial cartoonists — including Herbert L. Block (Herblock), Bill Mauldin and Pat Oliphant—held a particular grip on the American psyche. Just before his death in 2007, the onetime editor of The Times' editorial pages, Anthony Day, worried that the skittish and contracting newspaper industry would no longer support a “genius” like Conrad. “It's easier to not make trouble,” Day said, “than to make trouble.” And Conrad loved making trouble. His righteous indignation was guided by a modest Midwestern upbringing, an abiding Catholic faith and what one chronicler called “a fanatic heart.” Many journalists like to talk of the imperative of afflicting the comfortable and comforting the afflicted. Conrad embraced the credo with abandon. “Don't ever accuse me,” he liked to say, “of being objective.” CONTINUED… added by: EthicalVegan

Wes Craven praises young additions to ‘Scream 4’

‘(Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell) do have a very significant and exciting role in the film,’ director reveals. By Kara Warner Wes Craven Photo: Getty Images Wes Craven fans have a lot to be excited about these days, as the beloved writer/director has not one, but two highly anticipated projects on his plate, the first of which is a horror/thriller due October 8. The second project is “Scream 4.” the long-awaited fourth chapter in Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson’s hugely popular franchise, which not only reunites the original cast (David Arquette, Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox), but includes a slew of popular young stars, including Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell, Rory Culkin, Shenae Grimes and Lucy Hale. When we caught up with Craven to discuss “My Soul to Take,” we couldn’t help but prod the man in charge for some “Scream 4” scoop, beginning with how he managed to assemble his original stars. “Well, I could take credit for it, but it wouldn’t be accurate,” he said. By the time Craven was asked to direct, Dimension studio head Bob Weinstein had already secured Cox, Arquette and Campbell. “It was just a matter of me saying, ‘Sure,’ ” Craven added. For the director, the allure of rejoining the team to work on a good script was icing on the cake. “I think all of us wanted to do something written by Kevin [Williamson] and to work together again,” he said. “We all had such wonderful times on the first three. It has been a return to a great deal of fun — just the pleasure of working together again. We know each other inside and out. There’s a lot of shorthand and a lot of fun memories from our past escapades.” Regarding the new additions to the franchise, Craven was full of praise for his young stars. “The young cast is amazing,” he said. “They’re extremely bright and a very varied cast. … They’re just great to work with. It’s fun to be doing that combination of the sort of classic actors of the first three and this new group of kids. [They] have very different and fresh personalities and great acting talent.” And what about the plot? How does it fit within the franchise, and how does it differ? “It’s a clear and/or pretty well-known [fact] that it’s a return to Woodsboro for Sydney Prescott, who is Neve’s character,” Craven said. “Courtney and David have, as they did in real life, have gotten married and are living in Woodsboro, so it’s the story of Sid’s return to Woodsboro and the series of events that take place there where those three are thrown together in a wild and crazy way, and then a group of kids that get meshed in the plot.” Speaking of that group of kids, Craven went on to say that managing the appearances of all his young stars — most of whom are speculated to be making quick cameos — has been a pleasure rather than a headache. “Well, that’s the great joy — it’s fun,” he said. “A lot of these actors I didn’t know that well or have not worked with most of them, or any of them, as a matter of fact,” Craven explained. “They always say, ‘It’s great working with you. I’ve wanted to work with you for a long time,’ but it’s wonderful working with actors like this that are very young and have a large following already because of their talent, and just to spend one or two days with them to do these kind of set/bit pieces is a lot of fun.” With regard to those one- or two-day roles, we tried to get Craven to reveal a few specifics about two recently announced “guests” in particular: Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell. “I don’t know what I’m allowed to say,” he laughed. “They do have a very significant and exciting role in the film, let me put it that way.” What do you think of the star-studded “Scream 4” cast? Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez Reveal Secrets Of ‘Machete’ Nude Scenes

Stars of Robert Rodriguez’s new flick discuss their bodies — real or created? By Kara Warner Jessica Alba at the “Machete” premiere Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Robert Rodriguez’s fake-trailer-inspired Mexploitation flick “Machete” has a lot going for it. Not only is it an action-packed, bloody romp, but it features kick-ass weapon-wielding stylings from leading ladies who also flash a bit of skin. Thanks to Rodriguez’s earlier explanation regarding his tricks to effective — not offensive — onscreen nudity , we know that not everyone is as naked as they seem. However, when we caught up with the film’s ladies in question, Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez, it became apparent that there are a few more nude-themed questions to be answered. Namely, who was in charge of Michelle’s rockin’ bod, and which guy creates the post-production nipples? “I want to know: Who sculpted that body?” Alba asked Rodriguez as they gazed at a “Machete” poster featuring the very toned leather-clad actress. “Because the whole time I’m watching you, I’m drooling. ‘She doesn’t have any cellulite, not an ounce of fat! What is going on?'” Rodriguez responded with a hearty laugh. “That was [from] ‘Battle Los Angeles,'” she explained. “I was in boot camp before that. I had three weeks of intensive Marine warfare training.” “You looked insane,” Alba said. We then reminded the actress that it’s obvious from her shower scene in the film that she’s in just as good of shape. “Oh no, no, no,” she insisted. “I had undies on, and I had other stuff on, and they just sort of etched it out in post [production]. That’s not really me. I’m better covered up.” “I want to meet these guys who work in special effects and they are basically in charge of adding nipples,” Rodriguez added. “No, no — there were no nipples, though!” Alba responded regarding her apparently post-production-enhanced shower. “There weren’t?” Rodriguez asked, looking genuinely surprised. “I tried not to look because I thought that was a private moment that I shouldn’t be watching.” “No, there was no nipple!” Alba insisted. “No, no, no, no nipple.” “Well, I want to meet these [special-effects] guys though because they basically create what’s not there,” Rodriguez continued. “It’s pretty bugged out.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Machete.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Machete’ Director Robert Rodriguez Reveals Trick To Onscreen Nudity

He front-loads his movies with nakedness, then ‘in your mind, everyone is naked the rest of the movie.’ By Kara Warner Robert Rodriguez Photo: MTV News “Machete” was originally conceived as a fake trailer in “Grindhouse,” but fan demand convinced director Robert Rodriguez to make the story into a full-length feature, which opens Friday. The film, which revolves around the titular character and his attempt to clear his sullied name, is full of blood, action, crazy weaponry and beautiful naked and half-naked women. When we caught up with the “Sin City” and “Spy Kids” filmmaker recently, we asked how he decides when to play the naked card and when to avoid it. “Ask my sister. She tells me, ‘You need to have more hot chicks in this movie!’ ” Rodriguez said, playfully deferring to his co-editor and co-writer, Alvaro Rodriguez. “I have a trick,” he admitted. “I did this in ‘Sin City’ too. People say, ‘There’s so much nudity in “Sin City.” ‘ I say, ‘No, if you look close, there’s only [some] at the very beginning.’ ” Rodriguez said showing a lot of skin from the get-go makes people think they’re seeing more than they do. “If you do it at the beginning of the movie, in your mind, everyone is naked the rest of the movie if they’re scantily clad — because that’s how the comics are drawn,” he said. “[‘Machete’] was the same way.” Rodriguez cited a particular scene at the beginning of the film, in which Machete tries to save a beautiful (and naked) woman, as his prime example. He said the decision to have the actress appear sans clothing throughout the entire scene helps enable extra tricks in the plot that wouldn’t work otherwise. “That was the first scene I wrote. There’s got to be a girl that he goes to save and she’s naked and he’s having to run out with this naked girl over his shoulder, but then you put a twist on it,” Rodriguez explained, continuing with a pseudo-spoiler . “She ends up working for the other side and tricking him by being nude. That way he doesn’t see it coming. Everything else, he’d be able to see a trick coming,” he said, adding that there isn’t much more skin in the rest of the film (save for a topless scene in a pool). “It’s really just that trick.” “Machete,” starring Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Robert De Niro and Don Johnson, opens Friday. What do you think of Rodriguez’s trick? Will it affect how you watch the film now? Let us know in the comments! Jessica Alba ‘Inspired’ Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Spy Kids 4’

Writer/director recalls seeing the ‘Machete’ star change diapers on set. By Kara Warner Jessica Alba at the “Machete” premiere Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Let’s face it, Jessica Alba is known for her sexy factor. No matter what role she’s in, be it a superhero (“Fantastic Four”), a pharmaceutical sales rep (in the upcoming “Little Fockers”) or an immigration officer (this week’s “Machete”), Alba’s addition to any cast turns up its heat. Such is even the case with Robert Rodriguez’s “Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World.” When MTV News caught up with the actress and her director at the L.A. premiere of “Machete” earlier this week, we asked them how her casting came to be. “I was so inspired, seeing her on [the ‘Machete’] set trying to be beautiful for the camera and yet having to [run off] to change her baby’s diaper,” Rodriguez explained. “I thought, ‘You know what, that would be great as a spy mom, I’ve got to write that in.’ ” And since Rodriguez is the writer/director/creator of the “Spy Kids” franchise, he did just that. “I wrote that into the script, based on her,” he said of what will his third film with Alba. The 28-year-old actress/mom said she’s most looking forward to working with Rodriguez again — and to eating more of the director’s specialty: homemade margherita pizza with jalape

Jessica Alba To Star In ‘Spy Kids 4’

Actress will play mother of the preteen spies, who have yet to be cast. By Adam Rosenberg Jessica Alba Original Spy Kids Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara are all grown up now, which means that series creator Robert Rodriguez needs to enlist a new generation of pint-sized spooks. The new preteen twosome has yet to be cast, but their mother may have been found. Jessica Alba is in negotiations to take on the role of the female lead in “Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World,” The Hollywood Reporter reveals. If cast, she’ll play a newly reactivated former spy who must balance going back to work with the challenges of having two preteen children — our new spy kids — and a baby. In addition to the starring kids, two other key roles still need to be cast: Alba’s husband, a “slightly nerdy investigative reporter,” and the movie’s main villain, Time Keeper, who seeks to stop time. The report also reveals that Vega, Sabara and Antonio Banderas are expected to return in supporting roles; no word on Carla Gugino, who played the mother of the original kids and the wife of Banderas’ character. Alba has already worked with writer/director/producer Rodriguez more than once. She had one of the starring roles in the ensemble comic book adaptation of Frank Miller’s “Sin City.” And she’ll next appear in Rodriguez’s “Machete,” alongside Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan and more — another sizable ensemble — which hits theaters September 3. “Spy Kids 4” was previously confirmed as a 3-D release. Budgeted at under $30 million, it’s expected to start shooting next month. For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

CBS ‘Early Show’ Touted Levi Johnston When He Was Trashing the Palins, But Now That He’s Recanted….

CBS’s Early Show was eager to host Levi Johnston when he was trashing the Palin family last year – 5 segments totaling more than 24 minutes of airtime. But since admitting that some of his attacks were untrue, the morning show has barely noticed, making only two brief mentions of Johnston’s reversal and apology in a July 6 People Magazine interview . On Friday, fill-in co-host Erica Hill offered a scant 42 second discussion of Johnston’s apology in the show’s weekly ‘Early Wrap’ segment. She actually admitted that it had been “highly under-reported.” On Wednesday, amidst  2 minutes and 32 seconds of coverage of Johnston’s re-engagement to Bristol Palin, a total of 25 seconds was given to his apology.  During the Wednesday coverage, co-host Harry Smith remarked: “How many times was that young man on this show talking really horrible things about the Palins?” Later, Hill declared that Johnston “said some rather unflattering things,” causing Smith to once again describe how “Levi was on this show a bunch, several times in that era, and did interviews with [fellow Early Show co-host] Maggie [Rodriguez].”   Of the five 2009 segments about Johnston, three were exclusive interviews between him and  Rodriguez. The first interview aired on April 8, while the second was aired in two parts on October 28 and 29.  In addition, the show did September 3 segment on Johnston’s anti-Palin Vanity Fair interview and a November 17 story previewing an interview with him on the CBS entertainment news program ‘The Insider.’   During each of those broadcasts, Johnston’s allegations were hyped as important breaking news. On September 3, Smith declared: “The father of Sarah Palin’s grandchild is talking again. Someone won’t be pleased. We’ll tell you what Levi Johnston is saying.” On October 27, Smith announced: “The father of Sarah Palin’s grandson is here with some stunning allegations about the former Alaska Governor.” Teasing the November 17 segment, Rodriguez proclaimed: “Still to come, Levi Johnston says he is winning the war of words between Sarah Palin and him. We’ll hear from him when we return.” A clip was later played of Johnston: “I just look at her in disgust. It’s almost funny that she’s like 46 years old and she’s battling a 19-year-old and I’m winning and I’m telling the truth. She’s lying and losing.” After airing the second part of her interview with Johnston on October 29, Rodriguez read a response from Sarah Palin that said in part: “CBS should be ashamed for continually providing a forum to propagate lies.” Rodriguez defended herself by claiming “…we raised all those questions about credibility and his motivation for doing this.” Now that Johnston has admitted to making false statements, when will CBS admit its mistake in providing him a media platform.
