10 Great Movies of 2010 That Will Not Be Recognized by the Academy

As this week’s influx of critics group awards and Golden Globe nominations can confirm, there are really only a handful of films that will be up for Academy Awards in February. (See: The King’s Speech , The Social Network , The Fighter , The Kids Are All Right and Black Swan .) Every year, though, the Academy not only overlooks great performances , but also a number of great films as well; some are too small, some are too broad, and in the case of documentaries, some just didn’t make the first shortlist . With that in mind, let’s step outside the fog of Oscar buzz for a second and take a look at 10 deserving films of 2010.

Roman Polanski Reaps Big Rewards At European Film Awards

If there’s one thing Europe loves even more than a charismatic dictator, it’s a convicted sex offender on the lam. Yes, Roman Polanski’s Ghost Writer was the big winner at the European Film Awards last night, nabbing the statue for Best Director, Best Actor (for Ewan McGregor), Best Screenplay and Best Picture, among other accolades. But even though I mock, truth be told, The Ghost Writer is an excellent movie and it’s a bit of shame that it didn’t make a bigger impact over here. A full list of the winners after the break.[ Deadline ]

What Paul Hogan Has in Common With Roman Polanski

It’s more than just a knife in the water! (Sorry.) The Crocodile Dundee star is not allowed to leave Australia because he owes millions in back taxes. Hogan was served with a “departure prohibition” by the crafty, ready-to-pounce Australian Taxation Office last week when he traveled to Sydney for his mother’s funeral. Where have we heard this before ? “The process of detaining Paul in Australia away from his wife and child in Los Angeles has devastated Paul,” said Hogan’s lawyer Andrew Robinson. Now that’s a tax evasion ! Nyuk, nyuk, gunshot, etc. [ Reuters via NYT /ArtsBeat ]

On DVD: Getting to the Bottom of Roman Polanski’s Ghost Writer

Even as Roman Polanski seemed destined to stand trial , finally, for having champagne-&-Quaalude-leavened sex with a 13-year-old 30 years ago, he was polishing up his 18th feature, The Ghost Writer , about a famous man who cannot leave his house for fear of being extradited. Polanski’s sense of isolation and bitterness seeps throughout the new film, for better or for worse, and you cannot be blamed for wondering if a Polanski biopic is inevitable (starring Simon McBurney!), preferably directed by the man himself. The intrigue!

Roman Polanski wife Sharon Tate picture

Roman Polanski and his former wife, the late Sharon Tate As far I#39;m concerned, Switzerland can take their watches, chocolates, and secret bank accounts full of Nazi gold, and shove it up their ass. They#39;ve denied the United States#39; extradition request for famous child molester Roman Polanski and have made him a free man within their country. From AP: The Swiss government declared renowned film director Roman Polanski a free man on Monday after rejecting a U.S. request to extradite him
