Nicki Minaj Deserves Her Own Genre On Roman Reloaded

MC serves up hip-hop and pop on the bipolar Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which leaked online Wednesday. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Search for Nicki Minaj ‘s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded in iTunes, and you’ll find that it’s tucked tight in the hip-hop/rap section, but putting Nick’s sophomore album in the confines of a single genre only tells half the story. The album was illegally leaked onto the Internet on Wednesday night, but when Barbs officially unwrap Roman’s new LP on April 3, they’ll find a culmination of her musical growth neatly sequenced in a symmetrical pop/rap package. The first half of Roman Reloaded recalls Nicki the Ninja’s mixtape days, where she spewed nothing but venom on tracks like “I Get Crazy” and “Itty Bitty Piggy.” The album opener, “Roman Holiday,” isn’t unfamiliar, but the theatrical track which Nicki brought to life at the 2012 Grammys makes more sense in the context of the LP. The vaudevillian hook gives way to some pretty clever rhymes that many may have missed during the much-panned televised performance. “Anyway stylists go get Bulgari/ I am the ultimate Svengali/ You bitches can’t even spell that/ You hoes buggin’ repel that,” she spits before getting schizophrenic, switching up to a flow that has hints of the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Sure, Nicki is a pop icon, but these days, so are Jay-Z and Lil Wayne. The Young Money superstar refuses to give up any rap ground, however, and the first seven tracks from Roman Reloaded are unapologetically street. The Hit-Boy-produced “Come On a Cone” and “I Am Your Leader” are both anchored by bass-rattling beats and both find Nicki (as Roman) inviting haters to her figurative male genitalia. On the latter, the Female Weezy pounds her chest alongside Rick Ross and Cam’ron, baiting her competition with lines like: “Nunchuck her, no time to duck her/ Sign of the cross ’cause this is her last supper.” Roman Reloaded has more rap features than her 2010 debut: 2 Chainz shows up for “Beez in the Trap” and Wayne appears twice, once on the title track and then again on “Sex in the Lounge.” Nicki then gives the hood some inspiration with Nas, Drake and Young Jeezy in tow on the uplifting “Champion,” but shortly after that, the bipolar LP takes a sharp turn. Rather than mix hip-hop with her ever-growing pop sensibilities, Nicki presents Roman Reloaded as a two-parter. If cassettes were still the music medium of choice, there’d be a stark contrast between the A and B sides. RedOne’s pulsating sound dominates on the Harajuku Barbie’s current top 10 single “Starships” and continues for five songs straight — the sequencing is not coincidental. “Pound the Alarm” is an adrenaline-laced fist-pumper, and “Whip It” proves that the reigning rap queen picked up quite a few tricks touring alongside Britney Spears last year. “Automatic” is another sweat-inducing dance anthem that should keep Minaj on the charts while her rap fare will keep her in the conversation amongst the hottest MCs. Over the course of 19 tracks, the Barbs should find a song to suit their every mood. “Fire Burns” for when they’re nursing heartbreak, “Marilyn Monroe” for when the world seems to be just too much and “Hov Lane” when they want to celebrate their relative victories. Since her come-up days, Nick has refused to be put in a box. With her cocksure rap demeanor, it’s hard to ignore her hip-hop roots, but when you factor in her ability to craft a popular tune, the possibilities become endless. Roman Reloaded is a further realization of those infinite possibilities, so instead of defining Nicki Minaj by category, maybe it’s time to give her own genre. Nas ‘Loved’ Linking Up With Nicki Minaj For ‘Champion’

‘If I feel it, I can get on it,’ Nas tells MTV News about his collabo on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Nadeska Alexis Nicki Minaj Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage When Roman gets reloaded on April 3, it looks like Nicki Minaj ‘s alter ego will have some backup. On Friday (March 16), the Harajuku Barbie unveiled the track list of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. Of course, Young Money counterparts Lil Wayne and Drake make appearances, but so do Chris Brown, Rick Ross, Cam’ron, Young Jeezy and 2 Chainz, not to mention Nas on a song called “Champion.” “Nicki hit us up, I got love, so it was nothin’ — I did the record,” Nas told MTV News on Saturday night before his show at South by Southwest. “Champion” also features Drake and Young Jeezy, and based off the features, one can assume that fans will see Nicki in full-on MC mode, as opposed to the pop presence on her current single “Starships.” It’s a duality Nicki embraces. “I guess I am pop culture just because what I’m doing seems to be popular. When people want to do what you’re doing, it’s kinda popular,” she told MTV News after her NBA All-Star Game performance in February. While fans wait to see how Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded holds up sonically, Nas gives his own assurance for “Champion.” For the Queensbridge, New York, MC, it all boils down to a simple feeling: “It’s hip-hop music; music is music. If I feel it, I can get on it. I heard the track, I felt it, I loved it.” What are you expecting from Nas, Drake and Young Jeezy’s Nicki Minaj collaboration? Tell us in the comments! Tami Roman Reveals Details On New “Basketball Wives” Season

Go here to read the rest:

“Basketball Wives” Season 4 is almost here and castmember Tami Roman sat down with Egypt to dish on what drama we can expect. On why she decided to joined the second season of ‘Basketball Wives’ With “Basketball Wives,” they approached me when they did their first season. They contacted [my manager] and I just wasn’t really ready to go on a show, talk about Kenny. I really didn’t want to go back to the reality genre. So, between the year that they had their first season and the second season, my family fell on a hardship. You know my daughters and I had been on food stamps and we had been on medical assistance through the state of New Jersey. And so I was looking for something income wise. I was working a 9-5 job in corporate America. And when I watched the first season of ‘Basketball Wives’ I felt like my story wasn’t on there. I’m sitting here like in the dark. My lights are out. You know that’s not my moment. I’m not champagne brunching and mani’s and pedi’s everyday and I felt that I had a valuable story to tell…to show my particular situation and what me and my daughter’s were going through, so I contacted VH1. On whether a fight really broke out between Jennifer and Evelyn at Shaunie O’Neal’s birthday party I can’t really give too much away but I can tell you this. This season is filled with a lot of twists and turns. Alliances that were there or that people have followed through the “Basketball Wives” journey that they thought were solid, some of those fall by the wayside, some of those alliances are re-established. You know everything is kinda all over the place and I have to tell you honestly we end the season and I feel that we’re all gonna at least be cool. That everybody can be amicable for the most part. This is the one time and we’re still taping that I really don’t know how this is gonna end. I don’t know whose gonna be friends, whose gonna hate each other, because it’s really all over the place. “Basketball Wives” Tami Roman Being Sued By Ex-Manager Meet The New “Basketball Wives: Miami” Cast Members

Nicki Minaj Calls ‘Roman In Moscow’ A ‘Teaser’

‘It’s the wackest thing on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, ‘ Nicki tells MTV News of sassy new single. By Christina Garibaldi Nicki Minaj at the Billboard Women in Music event on Friday Photo: D. Dipasupil/FilmMagic NEW YORK — All the Barbies get ready, Roman is back! Nicki Minaj released “Roman in Moscow” on Friday (December 2), the first track off her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. On the brand-new, hard-hitting single, Minaj’s foul-mouthed alter ego Roman Zolanski spits out insults in his rapid-fire flow. It seems safe to say that Roman is fully recharged, and perhaps even taking shots at Nicki’s rival Lil’ Kim . “I told you, bitch, last year / I’m a rap-bitch nightmare / That’s why I call you Buzz Lightyear,” Roman says. ” ‘Cause by the time you start buzzin’, bitch, you gonna have white hair!” MTV News caught up with Minaj at the Billboard Women in Music event on Friday afternoon and she talked to us about the track. ” ‘Roman in Moscow is like a teaser to Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which will drop on Valentine’s Day,” Minaj said. “When I say it’s a teaser, it’s like a trailer to the movie, it’s like setting the stage and I just wanted to touch the surface. It’s the wackest thing on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. ” On the song, Roman is fired up and wreaking havoc all over Moscow. “Well, he was there [in Moscow] secretly because [alter ego] Martha wanted him to go there, so they put him in this thing with monks and nuns; they were trying to rehabilitate him,” Minaj explained. “But I can’t tell exactly what happened, you’ll just see it in the video format, but let’s just say he got out of there.” Minaj added that the video for “Roman in Moscow” “will be shot real soon.” The MC is also celebrating her four 2012 Grammy nominations, including one for Best New Artist . Nicki Minaj’s ‘Roman In Moscow’ Is ‘Bomb’

‘It’s a shut-the-game-down record,’ StreetRunner tells Mixtape Daily about just-released Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded single. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ FilmMagic Behind the Beats: StreetRunner and Sarom Roman is back, and on her new track, Nicki Minaj ‘s alter ego gets into all types of musical mischief. “Roman in Moscow” starts with a maniacal build of piano strikes into a full-on frenzy of thudding drums, spacey synths and crashing symbols. It’s a track befitting the fictional Roman Zolanski, who was once exiled into boarding school, but has since escaped. Credit veteran beatmakers StreetRunner and Sarom for crafting the first peek at the Best New Artist Grammy nominee’s upcoming Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded album. It took a couple of tries, but after about eight different versions of track, the production duo, who exist in a larger crew of boards-men called the Network, finally came up with something that perfectly suited Nicki’s mood. “Once we heard from Nicki’s camp that they were really interested in the track, we had to go back in on it and tailor make it a little more for her,” said StreetRunner, who was nominated for a Grammy this week for his work on Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV . “It took a good eight tries to get it into pocket, but once we got it, we knew it.” The duo submitted the first version of the beat to Team Minaj in October, and by their estimation, it took about a month for them to tweak the instrumental and for Nicki to record her verses. The song was mixed earlier this week and released Friday (December 2) on iTunes. Surprisingly, however, StreetRunner and Sarom didn’t hear the final track until Friday’s release. “Keeping music under wraps right now is very important if you want to avoid it getting leaked,” said Street, who saw a number of tracks he thought he had placed on Weezy’s Tha Carter III illegally released online, then ultimately left on the cutting-room floor. Sarom also lost records that could’ve potentially made Wayne’s 2008 gem, but for him, “Roman in Moscow” was well worth the wait. “Of course she’s gonna go in on every single track, but she just came off on some other sh– today,” he told Mixtape Daily . “I can’t even believe it.” The song definitely isn’t a pop affair. Nicki as Roman leaves behind her cutesy “Super Bass” persona in exchange for something more sinister. She starts off her first verse, “I’m big Willie, no bike gear/ I told you bitches last year, I’m a rap bitch nightmare/ That’s why I call you Buzz Lightyear/ ‘Cause by the time you start buzzin’ bitch, you gonna have white hair.” By the end of her two-verse lyrical triad, Nicki goes on a humorous rant. “Yeah ain’t no motherf—in’ prayers bitch, ain’t no motherf—in’ hook, ain’t no motherf—in’ third motherf—in’ verse,” her potty mouth spews. “Roman’s back, bitch/ I f—ed up your life last year this time, remember that?” Street, who started his career as a DJ, said, “That intro to the first few lines that she says, it’s a shut-the-game-down record. Any DJ who’s on radio and just wants to drop bombs, that intro is gonna happen, bomb.” Share your thoughts on Nicki Minaj’s “Roman in Moscow” in the comments!
