ABC, CBS Inaccurately Report Pope’s Condom Remarks as ‘Change in Policy’

On Tuesday evening, ABC and CBS furthered the mainstream media's largely inaccurate reporting on Pope Benedict XVI's recent remarks on the morality of condom use. While the pontiff stated that condoms are ” not really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection ,” World News anchor Diane Sawyer stated that ” the Pope shifts his rules on condom use .” Evening News anchor Katie Couric labeled Benedict XVI's comment a ” historic statement ,” and trumpeted how supposedly, ” Pope Benedict says, for the first time, that condoms are okay to protect against HIV and other diseases .” Sawyer included her misleading “Pope shifts his rules on condom use” phrase as she teased the lead stories at the beginning of World News. Sixteen minutes into the half hour program, the ABC anchor introduced correspondent Dan Harris's report, who began by giving a false impression of Benedict's remarks during an interview published in book form given by German journalist Peter Seewald. An on-screen graphic proclaimed, ” A Change in Policy :” read more

DMX Arrested On Probation Violation

‘When you don’t follow the rules, there’s consequences,’ X’s manager tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman DMX (file) Photo: Paul Redmond/ WireImage DMX was back in a familiar place Thursday after being arrested on a felony charge of violating his probation. The troubled MC (born Earl Simmons) was picked up and jailed for not following the terms of his probation, which included checking in with his probation officer, according to his manager. “He just didn’t check in with his probation officer, and it’s just a matter of him not following the rules,” manager Nakia Walker told MTV News on Friday (November 19) while confirming that the rapper is being held without bail until a probation-revocation hearing slated for next Wednesday. At press time, Walker said she hadn’t spoken to her client, who she claimed was going through a rough patch in his life. Asked how the oft-arrested MC ended up in jail again, she said, “Because he’s not perfect. This is a difficult time in his life. He’s going through some things. … Sh– happens. I can’t tell you why he makes the decisions to do the things that he does. Other than that, there’s no real excuse for it. When you don’t follow the rules, there’s consequences.” X has been out on parole on an assault conviction and was arrested in Phoenix. It marked his sixth arrest in Maricopa County, where he has made his home for nearly a decade. In that time, he has racked up arrests and jail stints for crimes including theft, drug possession and animal cruelty. A spokesperson for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office could not be reached for comment at press time, but Walker denied the details of a Radar Online report that said X was also cited for cocaine possession, as well as for using Oxycontin without a prescription, failing to submit to drug tests, failing to participate in counseling programs and driving on a suspended license. “Those are old charges they’re talking about,” she said. According to the gossip site, the complaint against DMX, 39, read, “Mr. Simmons has several felony convictions, and has been given multiple opportunities to succeed on probation. He has been directed to treatment, as well as chose his own treatment program and continues to use illegal drugs following their opportunities.” Fox 10 spoke to X last week in an interview in which he said he wanted to stay out of headlines and focus on his music. “I was in Tent City for a while,” he said of his six-plus months in the county’s notorious 2,000-inmate outdoor prison camp. “I don’t take orders well or direction. [Sheriff Joe Arpaio] said, ‘You had an attitude problem.’ They talk to you any kind of way. At the end of the day, I am still a man.” Arpaio, a notoriously hard-nosed lawman, has spoken about his disappointment with the lenient sentences DMX has gotten from Arizona judges, but X said he’s not mad at the sheriff. “No, hate would ruin my life. I wish him the best — good health, long life — leave me alone,” DMX said. While Walker did not specify what difficulties DMX is facing in his life at this moment, the arrest came just as the once-platinum rapper was beginning to mount a comeback. Earlier this week, he released a new single produced by Swizz Beatz as part of his series. The song, called “Ya’ll Don’t Really Know,” features Busta Rhymes and finds the gravelly voiced X back at his hard-hitting, grimy best, chanting and barking defiantly over a ominous Swizz track, one of several collaborations Walker said were in the can. On DVD: When Mud Orgies and Full Monties Aren’t Enough

There are plenty of reasons to look back at the ’60s and envy its crazy natives, but Bob Levis’s notorious and rarely-seen Gold (1968) manifests a beaut: in those days, the rules that govern mass culture could be treated like toilet paper. Music and movies could not just toss out the rulebook but act as if it never existed, making up stuff as they went along with the copious assistance of very good dope, a ubiquitous and intoxicating sexual chaos, and a happy disdain for the establishment that’s never been equaled. (American youth since then has been mere sheep — sheep! )

Lee DeWyze Admits ‘American Idol’ Theme Weeks Were ‘Frustrating’

‘There’s some songs I never would have sang in a million years, but I signed up for it,’ he says. By Katie Byrne Lee DeWyze Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Fox Lee DeWyze proved on “American Idol” that everyone truly loves an underdog. He might not have started out as a bold-faced name on season nine, but his consistent growth from ball-of-nerves to confident rocker resonated with America and landed him the coveted crown on Wednesday night. We caught up with Lee on Friday (May 28) to talk about the show’s frustrating theme weeks, how he chose U2’s “Beautiful Day” as his first single and what his upcoming album will sound like. Q : The judges often talk about showing who you’ll be as an artist, but then you’re forced to sing songs out of your comfort zone with the different theme weeks. Was that frustrating? A : I think a big part about “American Idol” that scares people and has, I’m sure, stopped people from trying out is the fact that you do have to do things that aren’t necessarily your genre. You’re given a song, and you do have some say in it, but you go with whatever song you have to go with. You take that song, and the judges always say, “Make it your own! Make it your own!” And sometimes it sounds repetitive when they say that. … I just wanted to take every song and make it sound like a song that Lee sang. The judges credited me; they said, “You had some great arrangements.” We were given free reign to arrange songs the way we wanted. That was what got me through that part, because if it was just “Go up there and sing the songs exactly like they’re written,” then that would have been a lot more difficult than it was. When we did Shania Twain Week , that was a rough week for me, because it’s so out of my element. But I did what I could with the song. It’s part of the game, though. That’s what “American Idol” is: It’s “go up on the stage, play a cover song, and do the best you can your way and make them original.” I think that I was able to do that. It was frustrating at times, I won’t lie. It was. Because there’s some songs I never would have sang in a million years, but I signed up for it, and that’s the rules. You play by ’em, and you get by as best you can. Q : This season, you also have a cover song as your first single. How did you feel about that, and how did you choose that particular song? A : I like that song a lot. It’s a really good song. Is it something that’s necessarily in my genre? No. But again, there were songs on the table, and that was the one I thought would represent the moment the best, because this year they didn’t have an original song written for this specifically. Whatever the reasons for that are — there’s reasons. [ Laughs. ] I don’t know all the ups and downs of the behind-the-scenes stuff. It’s just been a big game of “play by the rules.” If it was up to me, there were certain things I would have done differently. Like onstage, maybe a little bit longer sets would have been cool; to be able to get into the song, instead of just “ready, go.” But again, that’s all part of it. Just being able to accept it was the hard part. But then, once you accept it, you can just roll with it. You can make the songs your own, and then move on. Q : What artists could you see yourself channeling on your upcoming album? A : I just got the Kings of Leon album [ Only by the Night ]. I liked their first albums a lot; they were a little harder. I really dig their newest album. I like that sound. That’s a sound I go for a lot of the time. It’s very gritty, but at the same time, it’s got great hooks and great lyrics. They break it down, and they can be a little more chill [or] a little more heavy. I’m always looking for new music. I’m going to be listening to a lot of different things for inspiration. Q : Were you able to talk to Simon Cowell after the show? A : I did see Simon [at the “Idol” wrap party], and we cheers’ed, and he said, “Congratulations,” and told me he’s proud of me, and he’s excited to be working with me. And I told him, “Thanks for the opportunity,” because without “American Idol,” I wouldn’t have had this platform to start a career on a major level. It was cool. We got to spend a little time together and talk. And it was a moment I won’t forget, because that was a big moment for me. Will you follow Lee’s post-“Idol” career? Let us know in the comments!
