The Bachelorette Recap: It’s the Climb

The Bachelorette ran it back with another partially-contrived, unintentionally hilarious, uber-dramatic episode tonight on Memorial Day. And what an episode. Okay, it was pretty run-of-the-mill. But between some vintage Bachelorette cliches, a romantic date with Arie Luyendyk, Jr. , and some man tears, it had its moments. After two weeks of first impressions – some good, some not – the remaining men took another shot tonight, and man oh man, things started to get REAL. Real dumb. Follow this link for a rundown of The Bachelorette spoilers we know now, including the (alleged) final three. Then read on for THG’s +/- Bachelorette recap! After three weeks, it’s still cute that Emily’s a mom. Plus 8 , and Plus 4 more for the prospect of her looking as good as her mom does in her 40s. Chris and his serial killer eyes get the first one-on-one. Minus 5 for ABC not casting him as the villain this season. Kalon’s looks aren’t as terrifying. He’s even wearing the Dexter shirt! Plus 4 . Minus 70 for the obligatory, recycled building-climbing date and corresponding metaphors. It is not like love, life or relationships. Please, just spare us. Plus 7 for Chris saying she looks good in a harness though. You could see the wheels turning and Fifty Shades of Grey -esque images in his head. Emily tells Chris he’s cute. A LOT. Minus 2 . Chris actually is pretty mature for 25. Plus 14 , because he still doesn’t seem like stepfather material right now, but maybe he could get there. John sees Emily holding a football and is hoping for … a relaxed, chill day. Surrounded by a dozen testosterone-filled dudes. So chill. Plus 1 . Em tells her friends to put “y’alls detective skills to work.” Plus 9 for the accent. Minus 8 for one friend saying “here for the right reasons.” Wait … the guy with the egg is still on the show? Minus 5 . Wait, Stevie is still on the show? Minus 9 . One of Emily’s friends dubs Sean “the genetic gift to the world.” Plus 10 , as that’s kind of totally true AND when he talks, his stock rises! Ryan tells Emily he’d still love her if she got fat, he just might love ON her as much. Yeah. Quite the statement. Minus 16 , even in jest. We thought Jef with one F actually was one of the kids at the park. Plus 5 . Sean and Doug are dominating this group date, both with friend time and Emily time. Plus 11 . Everyone else is playing for third right now. Kalon McMahon is so that name-dropping, ass-kissing, pompous douche at the high school reunion who everyone dreads seeing. Minus 7 . Tony contemplates leaving and talks to his little boy in a touching segment. One clearly drawn out to eat up time in a two-hour episode that really could be condensed to 90 minutes or even 60, but nevertheless. Cute. Plus 5 . Emily and Tony break up so he can go home. Both seem content with the decision. If only all reality TV splits were so amicable. Plus 8 . Arie gets the one-on-one date and jets off to Dollywood. Emily could not be more excited … about Dolly, and maybe Arie too. Plus 5 . Wouldn’t you know it, Dolly Parton herself is there to provide a private concert! And some love advice. Who’d have guessed? Minus 3 . Dolly’s been married 45 years? WOW. Plus 45 . Arie’s probably texted that many girls in the time he’s been on the show. Player. Minus 5 if he’s truly Mr. There For the Wrong Reasons . Having dated (and lived with) a woman with two kids is only helping his cause, though. He’s Mr. Saying All the Right Things. Plus 6 . Plus 10 for Emily being so up front, all the time. Well, except when she’s trying to punk Arie, but points for that half-hearted effort. She’s cute. She’s not even funny but she’s cute. And honest. And self-secure, yet vulnerable. Kinda the whole package. Plus 15 . Think he’s as genuine as she is? That’s the open question. Wash . Whoa, first quasi-makeout of the season! Plus 10 . The already-awkward cocktail party time becomes three times more so after seeing Kalon’s glasses. What a schmoozer. Minus 10 . Is he essentially implying he considers Ricki a compromise of shorts? Minus 15 … and Minus 15 more for the condescending remark after. Then Alessandro actually calls it a compromise. No rose for you. Minus 20 . Did he not know who The Bachelorette was this season? Aww. Arie is there to pick up the pieces and make out with her again. So suave, and so well coached by the producers. Plus 4 . Sean is really giving him a run for his money, though. The kind words about Ricki make this guy the anti-Alessandro. Plus 13 . Kissing session #2! In one night! Plus 5 . Chris Harrison sighting! Plus 3 . Plus 18 more for Ryan calling Arie a “dainty” man and for the outtakes in which Alessandro admits he dated his cousin. No longer in the running after tonight: Tony (set free) Alessandro (booted) Stevie (not given rose) Shelly the egg (shattered) EPISODE TOTAL: +40. SEASON TOTAL: -105.

Usher Sought ‘Creative Way’ To Debut Looking 4 Myself

Singer will open up about his appearance in the off-Broadway show ‘Fuerza Bruta,’ as well his new album, during ‘MTV First’ on Wednesday. By Jocelyn Vena Usher’s Looking 4 Myself cover art Photo: RCA Sure, anyone can hold an album-listening party at some record label’s headquarters or, to really mix it up, some swanky nightclub. But for Usher , that just wasn’t enough. When he was looking for a way to debut tracks off Looking 4 Myself , out June 12, he found another way to spread the word. Last month, Usher appeared in the off-Broadway show “Fuerza Bruta,” in which he played the male lead, Running Man, for one night only. During the show, he played all his newest, shiniest tracks for lucky theatergoers. When MTV News spoke to him exclusively during rehearsals, he explained that his part in “Fuerza” provided the perfect pairing between the themes on his album and the visuals of the play. “I mean, life is like that in a lot of ways. This was something that I organically came to,” he explained. “When you think about the lyrics of ‘Climax,’ ‘Going nowhere fast/ We reached the climax’ … ‘Going nowhere fast’ would be running in place,” he explained, referring to a part in the show where he runs on a treadmill, never actually ending up anywhere. ” Looking 4 Myself, I’m walking with my head down, counting every step,” he explained, referring to another act in the show. “I’m always trying to find very creative ways for the music and the art to work together and this is it. I only hoped it would be viewed in that way, in an unprecedented way. I hoped that people would be able to identify with it and become acclimated with my experience in a fun way, creative. This was kind of an emotional experience that leads you into my world.” Usher has even more to share about his experience in the show as well as his highly anticipated album release. He will open up during “MTV First: Usher,” set to take place on Wednesday, May 16, at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. He will introduce exclusive footage from “Fuerza Bruta” and his new single, the Pharrell-produced “Twisted,” and will stick around for an interview with MTV News’ Sway Calloway to discuss it all on MTV.com afterward. Fans can submit questions via MTV.com or Twitter @MTVNews with the hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskUsher. The performances featured in “MTV First: Usher” were shot exclusively by MTV News during a special album-listening experience with the off-Broadway show “Fuerza Bruta” in New York City. Don’t miss “MTV First: Usher” on Wednesday, May 16, at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an interview with the singer on MTV.com! Related Videos Get Ready For ‘MTV First: Usher’!

Usher ‘Trained Hard’ For ‘Fuerza Bruta’: Watch A Sneak Peek!

‘Climax’ singer sits down for an intimate chat with fans during ‘MTV First’ tomorrow at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV! By Jocelyn Vena Usher’s “Fuerza Bruta” performance Photo: MTV News Don’t get it twisted: Just because Usher is known for smooth dance moves and rock-hard abs, it doesn’t mean he didn’t have to push himself for his short run in the trippy, off-Broadway show “Fuerza Bruta.” For one night last month, Ush played the show’s lead, Running Man, and offered lucky attendees an advance listen to his June 12 album release, Looking 4 Myself. As fans will see in the exclusive clip — and on Wednesday night’s “MTV First: Usher” at 7:54 p.m. ET — “Fuerza” required Usher to use every muscle of his body as he danced, ran, jumped and tumbled his way through the show, where no one speaks, instead telling the story through bright lights, music and dance. MTV News had a front seat as Usher rehearsed for his onstage appearance in April, and when we chatted with him on set, he opened up about using the physicality of the show to tell the story of his album. “It’s not often that you’re able to give somewhat of a visual or an emotional kind of basis of what your songs mean,” he said. “A lot of times we’re running thorough life and were trying to find ourselves, and I feel like that was somewhat of what the messaging was with the show, but it was really artistic. “This is more artistic an album than I’ve had in history and I felt like, yeah, it would be a physical challenge, yeah it would be a lot for me, but [I want to] at least try it,” he added. “There are many times I’d seen the show and I’d only hoped that I would make it happen. It looked it really hard, they made it look easy, but it was obviously hard. But, of course, I’ve been training and it came at a perfect time.” Watching Usher do all those acrobatics may have had fans wondering whether it was all that difficult for him since he makes it look so easy. He joked, “I work hard, baby.” Usher will dish on the show, his album and more during “MTV First: Usher,” all set to take place on Wednesday at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. He will introduce exclusive footage and his new single, the Pharrell-produced “Twisted,” and will stick around for a meaty interview with MTV News’ Sway Calloway to discuss his new album and more on MTV.com. The performances featured in “MTV First: Usher” were shot exclusively by MTV News during a special album-listening experience with the off-Broadway show “Fuerza Bruta” in New York City. Miley Cyrus Shows Off Her Puppies

I’m aware that the title to this post is really stupid, but Miley Cyrus is technically showing off at least one puppy so I’m keeping it. Besides, this isn’t exactly the New Yorker you know. Anyhow, I think she might be one of those animal hoarders, I’ve had a ton of pictures of her running with a little husky puppy and now here she is with this little guy. Settle down lady. She’s probably got a room full of fecal matter in her mansion. Gross.

How Adam Yauch Made the Greatest Concert Film Ever

Editor’s note: The following piece, originally published by the author at Movie City News , was written after the New York premiere of the Beastie Boys’ concert film Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That! in 2006. The project was one of many films and videos made by the Beasties’ late Adam Yauch under his directorial nom de plume Nathanial Hörnblowér; Movieline today republishes the piece in remembrance. — STV Admittedly, I am not what you would call a Beastie Boys enthusiast. I am not even a casual fan. The depth of my Beasties appreciation runs shallow at best: I like the “Sabotage” video as much as the next guy; “Fight For Your Right” annoys me; the hip-hop clown thing is endearing; and I tend to just take their (many) devotees’ word for it that the trio is rooted in prodigious creative genius. Fine. I  do   watch a lot of movies, however, which is why I feel comfortable assessing the Beastie Boys’  Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That!  as possibly the greatest concert film ever made. A second viewing at last night’s New York premiere confirmed my first impression, and the standing-room-only audience attending the  Museum of the Moving Image -hosted event seemed to share at least some of that judgment. Not that it came out when the Beasties themselves – ”Mike D” Diamond, Adam “Adrock” Horovitz and Adam “MCA” Yauch – joined the crowd for the requisite post-screening chat. “How do you stay in such great shape?” a viewer asked. “As members of a basketball team, we have a very strong work ethic,” Horovitz said. “We have a workout tape we’re gonna be selling,” Yauch said. Diamond spoke up. “Actually, the team, I think, has a  poor   work ethic, and I think everybody needs to talk about that before we get into next season,” he said. “You guys talk about how you want freedom on the court. Show me the stats.” “Also, we rub ourselves down with monkey piss a lot,” Yauch said. That the Beastie Boys never actually got around to discussing how  good   their film is kind of helps define Awesome ‘s transcendent appeal. The movie represents the raucous bastard offspring of goofball stunt and technical experiment; only a band that takes its mission as seriously as the Beasties do could conceive a film  this   determined to  not   take itself seriously. And only the Beastie Boys — whose interactive relationship with their fans manifests itself in multi-angle DVD’s and do-it-yourself remixes — would count on concertgoers to hold them to their own expressionistic standards. Awesome ‘s central gimmick is old news: The band gave 50 fans 50 cameras to record the entirety of its Oct. 9, 2004, concert at Madison Square Garden. “You can rock out, you can do whatever you want,” a producer advises the camerapeople at the beginning of the film. “Just keep shooting. … In 20 years, you’ll be able to look back and say, ‘Awesome; I fuckin’ shot that.’ ” The Beasties combined the crowd footage with that of a small backstage crew, and Yauch went to work. “There were 61 different angles that we were cutting from,” said Yauch, whose other alias, Nathanial Hörnblowér, claims directing credit. “It was all loaded into Final Cut and stacked and we were cutting from that. It was a pretty crazy job. The way we started out was there were actually three different editors who went at it, and they had 20 cameras each, and they each did a cut. We were kind of looking it over and picked some parts that worked. We did a cut from that, and Neal (Usatin, supervising editor) and I stated cutting on top of that, and then spent about a year working on it. It was a good starting place, because it’s pretty hard to start with just, like, a blank canvas and start cutting from nothing when you have that much material.” In the end, Yauch continued,  Awesome   comprises 6,632 cuts – an average of one for every 19 frames. It screens like a pixilated light show, drowning in color and kinesis, putting the “ADD” back in “addled.” Meanwhile, the rich, refined sound defies the visuals’ bootleg ethos. As occasionally challenging as this blend is to watch, it makes for revelatory viewing. No band since Talking Heads has preserved (or even established) such visceral identity while relinquishing this much aesthetic control. But in downplaying posterity for the sake of experience, Awesome sets itself up as the anti- Stop Making Sense , the anti- Last Waltz , the anti- Woodstock , the anti- Gimme Shelter .  Depeche Mode 101  trails a handful of fans on their journey to a landmark emotional event in their lives–DM’s 1988 show at the Rose Bowl — but D.A. Pennebaker’s film captures a sense of a moment more than any real sense of community.  Dave Chappelle’s Block Party   evokes moment and community as sort of a hollow auteur wet dream, with no less a force than Michel Gondry doing little more than pointing and shooting Chappelle’s swan song to swagger. By placing them in the context of a genuine community (and if you have ever been to a sold-out show at the Garden, it is about as communal an atmosphere as 20,000 strangers are likely to find),  Awesome de-mystifies its subjects. A man carts his running camera into the bathroom, while another tapes a concessionaire air-guitarring her way through the opening riff of “Sabotage.” One hapless woman turns her device on her relatively idle section, imploring, “Come on, get excited! We’ll be on the DVD.” Boyfriends shout lyrics in girlfriends’ ears, dances mimic each other. The most powerful stage presence, in fact, belongs to the Beasties’ DJ Mix Master Mike, whose showcases contribute the virtuosic complement to Yauch’s crude explosion of style. That said, for all I lack in Beastie Boys knowledge, their film’s reflection of unhinged New York musical tradition is unmistakable. “That’s the thing with growing up in New York City,” Diamond said Tuesday night. “I think at the time we grew up, it was like hip-hop was evolving, there were incredible punk rock shows, hip-hop shows, reggae shows. Everything was in New York City. And then at the same time, I think even when we started playing shows ourselves–opening up for Run-DMC and LL Cool J and all these bands on tour–we learned so much from them. Being able to study that and everything, that was like…” Horovitz gestured into the audience, “For me personally, I don’t know if I’d be doing this if my brother never played me Jimmy Spicer’s  Super Rhymes ,” he said. “I can name some shows,” Yauch said. “Like when Funky Four Plus One came Downtown?” “Oh, yeah,” Diamond said. “That was definitely a big deal,” Yauch continued. “Slits, PIL, Clash.” “Gang of Four,” Horovitz said, nodding. But are the Beastie Boys a  continuation   of that spirit? That is for their fans to debate, although I should not be so quick to pass the buck – especially considering  Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That ‘s influence, its magic and my slow assimilation into their ranks. For once, at least for me, the Beastie Boys are a sight and sound to behold. This piece was originally published March 29, 2006, at The Reeler, a blog hosted at Movie City News . Follow S.T. Justin Bieber Says He’s ‘Too Young’ To Marry

‘It doesn’t mean Selena is not the right person though,’ he says of waiting a bit before he ties the knot, to anyone. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez denied engagement reports last week. And it seems that the Biebs, at age 18, is definitely not ready to get married. Doing press in Europe to spread the message about his new album, Believe, he was asked if he was ready to walk down the aisle with his actress/singer girlfriend. “No, I’m too young. One day, I will get engaged, when I have found the right person in five or 10 years. It doesn’t mean Selena is not the right person though!” he told Le Parisien, Pressparty.com reports. “She’s going to kill me if I say that!” The singer then talked a bit about having people constantly speculate about his relationship with Gomez. “It is not easy to be so young and to have a relationship with someone that doesn’t stay private,” he said. “But, well, I am a public personality, it is what I wanted, so I have to deal with it.” Earlier this year, Bieber opened up to MTV News about wanting to be a young dad . “I see myself in 10 years having a family,” he said. “Twenty-eight, that’s a good time to really have a family ’cause I want to be a young dad. Maybe, [it’s a] long time away though. Don’t get any ideas, people. It’s not happening anytime soon.” Well, perhaps if he follows his own ground rules to being a great boyfriend , then one day he really will make some special lady happy. “I don’t know if I’m even the best boyfriend,” Bieber said on the set of his video for “Boyfriend.” “But I can give a few suggestions. I think being honest and patient, because girls can be tough sometimes, so you just got to be patient. That’s two. Forgive, and have fun, because it’s about having fun. Last one? Be faithful.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Justin Bieber Related Photos Young Love: Justin Bieber And Selena Gomez Related Artists Justin Bieber

‘American Idol’ Castoff Elise Testone Will Be Calling Brian May

Testone wants Queen guitarist for her album: ‘He’s like, ‘Call me up. Let’s do it.’ ‘ By Kelly Marino Elise Testone Photo: MTV News Elise Testone might have wanted it all, but in Thursday night’s “American Idol” elimination round, she was cut from the running after taking on this week’s challenge of singing a Queen anthem as well as a song choice of her own. With the finale less than a month away, it has been imbedded in the contestants’ heads that it’s do or die when it comes to picking the right songs at this stage in the game. And while Testone’s rendition of Queen’s “I Want It All” on Wednesday night seemed to finally land her right back in her element, it was her personal pick of the less-familiar “Bold as Love” by Jimi Hendrix that might have caused her fall. Regardless, she stands by her decision wholeheartedly. “I really don’t have any regrets about that,” the 28-year-old explained. “I feel like I sung it the best, maybe one of the bests I’ve ever sung it, because I sung it a lot of times with my band, and people are always requesting it, and I feel like it’s a popular song. John Mayer just re-released it, and he is of our generation, so it’s one of the most epic songs ever written. “There is definitely a lot of give and take in the music environment,” she added. “You have to please people, but you also need to be yourself. So it’s always about finding a balance, and as we got closer to the show, I really just wanted to be myself and sing from my heart because if I try to please people then it might come across a little bit — I want to say fake, but not completely fake, but just you wouldn’t feel that conviction as much if I did that all the time. So, yesterday, I just chose songs that I love, and I did the best I could. So, I feel successful in those performances and with whatever is going to happen now.” The South Carolina native has had a history — or should we say “a vacation home” — in the bottom three for weeks now, with Jimmy Iovine even declaring she was the underdog of the competition. Elise admitted she didn’t take the comment too lightly at first, but she eventually learned to accept the criticism as part of the learning process. “At first, it was kind of hard to hear those things just because I have worked so hard, I have a degree in music, and I’ve been in like six different bands,” the rocker confessed. “I’ve done so much with music, so sometimes it was hard for me to take that criticism, but finally I realized that’s why I’m here. I signed up for this, and I can take the criticism. Move on.” And moving on she is. Now that the show must go on without her, Elise is already thinking about recording her debut album. So has she had any communication with Stevie Nicks since the legendary vocalist claimed she would hire Testone in an instant if she ever needed a singer? “No, no, but hopefully there will be,” Testone said with a smile. “Brian May, I talked to him a lot off-camera from Queen. Super cool. I mentioned two or three times I would love for him to play on my album, and he’s like, ‘Call me up. Let’s do it.’ So, I’m definitely going to get that phone number.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
