Andy Murray not worried by mediocre form as Wimbledon approaches

• ‘It doesn’t weigh on my mind’, says British No1 • Scot beats Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-3 at Hurlingham The Hurlingham club is not necessarily a place one would associate with suffering and pain, more strawberries and Panamas. For Andy Murray, though, it was the venue for the final part of some especially arduous Wimbledon preparations. “I don’t worry about working on my mental strength,” said Murray after completing a 6-4, 6-3 win over Mikhail Youzhny. “I just go out on the running track and suffer and practice and put myself through pain. Then I go into matches feeling mentally strong.” Perhaps that masochistic streak was why he spent so much of his match cursing himself after playing poor shots. Otherwise the only noises that broke the respectful silence were the sharp cries of encouragement from his mother Judy, sitting a few yards away from the court. With Murray having been knocked out of the Queen’s Club tournament in the third round by Mardy Fish last week, this match was an exercise in restoring a little of the confidence that has been gradually ebbing away from Murray’s game since he lost the Australian Open final earlier in the year. Yesterday he played poorly and still won, no mean feat given that Youzhny, seeded 13th in the Wimbledon draw, has been in good form through the season, unlike his opponent. Murray says his mediocre form is not a worry. “It doesn’t weigh on my mind you have just got to move on, the last couple of years have been very good and very consistent and I have just had a bad few months.” Still, his slight slump has helped to ease the pressure put on him by the British public. Maybe it is just that the nation’s fair-weather sports fans have heaped all their unrealistic expectations on England’s football team instead, but the run-in to Wimbledon this year has been conspicuously free of Murraymania. Judy Murray believes that will work to her son’s advantage, as he will not be subject to the suffocating pressure he normally suffers at this time of year. Murray just wishes that he had a few fellow players to help share the hopes of the nation rather than the footballers. He is one of only two British males in the main draw. “It’s not great but that’s where we are right now. It’s a shame there’s not more guys playing in the main draw and I more than most people would like that to change. But we don’t have guys with rankings that would justify wild-card places. Rather than moaning about it it is better to get on and try and find a solution.” Andy Murray Tennis Andy Bull guardian.co.uk

‘Avatar’ Vs. ‘New Moon’: Who Will Be MTV Movie Awards’ Best Movie?

Front-runners are joined by ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Hangover.’ By Todd Gilchrist Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington in “Avatar” Photo: 20th Century Fox With so many other fun categories for fans to vote on, it’s almost easy to forget about the meat and potatoes of the MTV Movie Awards , the big kahuna of the competition, Best Movie. Although a fan favorite (“The Twilight Saga: New Moon”) and a box-office champion (“Avatar”) make this a particularly contentious category, the most remarkable thing about this year’s Best Movie race is the eclecticism and quality of the films in the running. Take a closer look at the nominees below. Additionally, head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com for more information and to vote for your favorites. The big show starts tonight at 9 p.m. ET. “Alice in Wonderland” There’s probably no greater visionary working in mainstream movies today than Tim Burton, and his adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland” is the perfect pairing of moviemaker and material. Offering visionary, jaw-dropping visuals, amazing, inventive characters and a compelling coming-of-age story, Burton’s Wonderland is a wonderful place to visit. “Avatar” More than 10 years in the making, James Cameron’s return to fiction filmmaking is a breathtaking and groundbreaking new vision of the possibilities the silver screen holds. Featuring motion-capture CGI that renders every reaction and quirk of actors Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, Cameron creates a world unlike anything audiences have ever seen while taking them on a journey that harks back to the most basic formulas of film storytelling. The movie that made 3-D a must-have technology for almost all future films, “Avatar” is a game changer for cinema as a whole as well as a phenomenon unto itself. “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” Six movies after Daniel Radcliffe and company first brought J.K. Rowling’s book series to life on the silver screen, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” proves that the films still have plenty of creativity, and more than that, originality in them. Radcliffe continues to mature into the grown-up Harry Potter who has yet to confront his greatest adversaries, while director David Yates gives this sixth installment a unique look that sets it apart from the rest of the films and yet makes it fit in perfectly with what has come before. This film may feature a half-blood prince, but it’s indisputably, absolutely, fully entertaining. “The Hangover” Todd Phillips is no stranger either to raunchy comedies or to revealing the appeal of new comedic talents, having helped Will Ferrell become a star with 2003’s “Old School.” But “The Hangover” marks a turning point in the director’s career as he elevates misbehavior to the stuff of gutter poetry, assembling four equally talented but different performers to create an unforgettable, hilarious ensemble. Featuring Breakthrough and Best Comedic Performance nominee Zach Galifianakis and Best Comedic Performance nominee Bradley Cooper, “The Hangover” has “instant classic” written all over it, packing as much power as a punch from Mike Tyson. “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” Following 2008’s enormously successful “Twilight,” the cast reunited under the watchful auspices of “The Golden Compass” director Chris Weitz to expand the scope and drama of Stephenie Meyer’s book series even further. Bella’s relationship with Edward gets much more complicated when he departs for destinations unknown after a violent incident at the Cullen house, but her longtime friend Jacob threatens to become a surrogate or even possible replacement boyfriend after he does some growing up (in all the right places). A rich and dramatic romance that also includes plenty of requisite vampire and werewolf action, “New Moon” is the sort of adventure that lingers with you long after the sun has come up. ‘Hangover’ Mob Boss Leads Best Villain Nominees At MTV Movie Awards

Christoph Waltz, Stephen Lang, Tom Felton and Helena Bonham Carter battle Ken Jeong to be named baddest of the bad. By Jocelyn Vena Ian Anthony Dale and Ken Jeong in “The Hangover” Photo: Fox There are very few characters who can get your blood churning like this year’s contenders for Best Villain at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , airing this Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Everyone from a tyrannous queen and a Nazi commander to a mob boss and a power-hungry colonel are in the running to be named baddest of the bad. First up is “Inglourious Basterds” star Christoph Waltz , whose stone-cold Nazi colonel, Hans Landa, proudly accepts his “Jew hunter” nickname. Will he hunt down a Golden Popcorn? Only time will tell. Being the only lady nominated might work in Helena Bonham Carter’s favor. Playing the wicked Red Queen in “Alice in Wonderland,” she certainly held the imaginations of moviegoers everywhere, but can she do the same for Movie Awards voters? All good comedies need an antagonist, and the guys in “The Hangover” found theirs in Ken Jeong. What did viewers learn from Jeong’s turn as Mr. Chow? Just hope a mob boss’ casino winnings don’t get lost. We pray he doesn’t lose at the show. Yikes! The stars of “Avatar” proved that even in a world that only exists in the mind of James Cameron, the characters can feel as real as the people they know. And Stephen Lang’s portrayal of Colonel Miles Quaritch had fans fearing for the Na’vi. Tom Felton gave Daniel Radcliffe a run for his magic wand in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Playing Harry’s magical archrival, Draco Malfoy, Felton was a worthy competitor for Harry, but can he cast a spell on the Movie Awards? Who do you think is bad enough to win at the big show? Discuss in the comments! Al and Tipper Gore decide to separate

Washington (CNN) – Former Vice President Al Gore and his wife Tipper said Tuesday that they have decided to separate. “We are announcing today that after a great deal of thought and discussion, we have decided to separate,” the Gores said in an email to friends. “This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration. We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further.” The separation was confirmed to CNN by Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider. The Gores were married in 1970 and have four grown children. Vice President Al Gore served alongside former President Bill Clinton in the White House from 1993 until 2001. Gore lost his own bid for president in 2000. He served in Congress before Clinton picked him to be his running mate in the 1992 race for the White House. In recent years, the former vice president has become a leading voice warning about the dangers of global warming. added by: TimALoftis

Kristen Stewart Weighs In On ‘Wanted 2’ Rumors

‘I have nothing nailed down,’ ‘Eclipse’ actress says of playing the Angelina Jolie role in the sequel. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage In late April, rumors began surfacing online that “Twilight Saga” star Kristen Stewart was in the running for the role originated by Angelina Jolie in “Wanted 2.” The story was that Stewart is director Timur Bekmambetov’s top choice to replace Jolie in the sequel, pitting her against the returning James McAvoy as reluctant assassin Wesley Gibson. If hired, Stewart would play “a young, ass-kicking assassin in the Fraternity.” While much has been hush-hush about the speculation since it was initially reported, the star is now speaking up about the casting talk, saying that nothing is set in stone yet. “Right now, I have two projects lined up,” Stewart told Moviehole.net . “I’m doing ‘On the Road’ this summer and then I’m doing ‘Breaking Dawn.’ So other than that I have nothing nailed down.” With it still unknown whether “Breaking Dawn” will be two movies or one, it seems that Stewart’s schedule is definitely filled up for the time being. Regarding her involvement in the upcoming film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road,” she said last month, “I am very much attached to a movie that has been trying to get made forever. Not that this is going to help it, but maybe I can just brag a little bit. I am super-excited about it, too. I am about to play Marylou in ‘On the Road.’ So that’s a big deal.” In the same interview, fellow “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner dished that he has yet to even think about filming “Stretch Armstrong.” “It’s not happening for a while though, about a year from now,” he said. “I’m doing a movie called ‘Abduction,’ which starts in about a month. Then ‘Breaking Dawn.’ And hopefully ‘Stretch’ after that.” Would you like to see Stewart in “Wanted 2”? Tell us in the comments! Ousted Bachelor to Ali: Pick Chris Lambton!

As The Bachelorette spoilers accurately predicted, Rhode Islander Jay was not among Ali Fedotowsky’s chosen rose recipients on the season premiere Monday. But he knows which guy who did get a rose he’d like to see win. “Well, it was a good time,” Jay told Us Weekly following his ouster. “You’re just not used to a situation where there are about 50 cameras and 24 other guys.” Now that Jay’s out of the running, who should be Ali’s final pick? “Chris from Cape Cod was a really good guy,” he said of Chris Lambton , a landscaper, hunk and former high school teacher in New York. “They kind of hit it off really well… He was really funny and she seemed to really like him initially.” Will Ali follow Jay’s advice and pick Chris? One personal detail that Chris Lambton shared with the cameras but not with Ali Fedotowsky, at least not yet: he left New York City to care for his dying mother. “I was happy he didn’t get into the whole story about his mom passing away which is terrible,” Jay said. “He could’ve used that card maybe to play that up.” “He’s a really good guy and I really hope it works out for them.” Jay has no hard feelings himself: “Ali’s gorgeous – and so nice!” Click here for our season premiere recap if you missed it.

‘Spider-Man’ Reboot Lead Role Down To Five Finalists?

Rising young actors with ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Billy Elliott’ and other screen credits reportedly on shortlist to play Peter Parker. By Brian Warmoth Jamie Bell Director Marc Webb said earlier this year that he was “casting a wide net” for an actor to play Peter Parker in the next installment of “Spider-Man” , reboot of the franchise. Already, Webb, who directed “(500) Days of Summer,” has talked up the film with the star of his ’09 romantic comedy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt , and rumors have surfaced linking Josh Hutcherson and “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” star Logan Lerman to the movie. While reports that Lerman is in the running have been all but dismissed, a new report claims that Hutcherson and four other young actors have made Webb and Columbia Pictures’ shortlist for the Spidey role. Jamie Bell, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane and Andrew Garfield round out the finalists under consideration to succeed Tobey Maguire, according The Hollywood Reporter ‘s Heat Vision blog . Their credits range from the lead role in “Billy Elliot” (Bell) to the young Tom Riddle in 2009’s “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” (Dillane). Even the lesser-known actors, however, come with big-name directors attached to their onscreen appearances: Garfield worked with Terry Gilliam for “The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus” and Ehrenreich with Francis Ford Coppola on “Tetro.” The studio is reportedly taking its time in choosing among these relative unknowns, and has declined to publicly address casting rumors. All five would fit visually with the younger incarnation of Parker that Webb is said to be conceptualizing. “Spider-Man” screenwriter Alvin Sargent recently signed on to write the script for the movie, which is expected to be shot in 3-D and bear some resemblance to Brian Michael Bendis’ “Ultimate Spider-Man” comics. The would-be Peter Parkers named range in age from 17 to 27, reinforcing the old Hollywood rule that actors need only look young to play young. If Columbia plans to begin shooting the fourth Spider-Man film by the end of the year, they still have some time to reach a decision. But with the annual Comic-Con just two months away, any surprise panel appearances by someone like Webb will undoubtedly be met by an onslaught of questions. Who do you think would make the best Peter Parker? Tell us in the comments! For breaking comic book movie news, columns and more — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
