Palin: Drill Baby Drill, but blame Obama for the spill

For OpEdNews: Steven Leser – Writer Sarah Palin is weighing in on the BP oil spill, specifically, who is to blame for it and/or who is to blame for the spill taking so long to stop. I guess she can see the Deepwater Horizon site from her house. On Fox News, Palin had this to say: “the oil companies who have so supported President Obama in his campaign and are supportive of him now …[Palin mused whether]…there's any connection there to President Obama taking so doggone long to get in there, to dive in there, and grasp the complexity and the potential tragedy that we are seeing here in the Gulf of Mexico.” Palin is talking about the ability to grasp complexities? Sarah “in what respect Charlie” and “I know foreign policy because I can see Russia from my house when Putin rears his head over Alaska” Palin? “Death Panels” Sarah wants to talk complexities? Sarah, if you are so confident of your grasp of 'complexities' why don't you ask the producers of the shows you are on to put you head-to-head on various issues against some of the Democrats who appear on Fox? Even though I am not exactly your biggest fan, I'll volunteer, how about that? Any time on any issue. Yes Sarah, this is me, who has never held public office and should therefore be easy pickings for a former mayor and governor, calling you out. The suggestion from Palin is that Obama took the most money from the oil and gas industry and she and her running mate, John McCain were innocent of this and thus would not have been influenced. The LA Times performed some research and found to whom the oil companies contributed the most money: “The oil and gas industry donated $2.4 million to Palin's running mate, Republican John McCain, in the 2008 election cycle, and nearly $900,000 to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics' opensecrets.org website.” It ought to be pointed out that President Obama received tens of millions of dollars in contributions of $100 or less from working Americans all over the country including places like Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. If we are talking about amounts of money influencing people, then one would have to conclude that Obama is working 24×7 on the needs and problems of average working Americans. Sarah Palin typifies the 21st century Republican politician and use of Republican strategy, throw a plethora of accusations at Democrats without any regard to whether they are true and if one sticks, keep using it. Each instance of this is more galling than the next. Its as if Republicans are emboldened by the fact that they keep getting away with it. These latest statements by Palin are perhaps the most egregious example. The fact that Palin who is Miss Big Oil champion herself is trying to assert that someone else is somehow more beholden to the oil companies is unmitigated gall. Who can forget these excerpts that Palin uttered during her Vice Presidential debate with Joe Biden: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EP9ahIdBCr8 “”The chant is “drill, baby, drill.” And that's what we hear all across this country in our rallies because people are so hungry for those domestic sources of energy to be tapped into. “Barack Obama and Sen. Biden, you've said no to everything in trying to find a domestic solution to the energy crisis that we're in. You even called drilling — safe, environmentally-friendly drilling offshore as raping the outer continental shelf. There — with new technology, with tiny footprints even on land, it is safe to drill and we need to do more of that. ” http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt =A0WTb_jAb_xLOhEAdLijzbkF/SIG=134d42glo/EXP=1274921280/**http%3a//www.chumpingstones.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/sarah-palin-kissing.jpg What happened in the gulf is the responsibility of people who operated on exactly the same assumptions that Palin did. That is the mentality that caused us to be where we are now. This is the point at which Ms. Palin should be saying, “Ya know, doggone it, we were wrong when we said that drilling in the gulf was safe, you betcha.” She has no right to be out there making accusations against other people. This is mea culpa time for Palin and the rest of pro-drilling America. By the way, Sarah, your running mate, John McCain, was the only one of the four people on the 2008 national ticket who was against a windfall profit tax for the oil companies yet you go on national television and have the nerve to accuse others of being in bed with the oil companies. It's hard to believe that the first major Republican politician and first Republican President was Abraham Lincoln, a man noted for his honesty and his brilliance. Today's Republicans, like Sarah Palin, do not resemble him at all. added by: Stoneyroad

‘DWTS’ Finalist Evan Lysacek Is ‘Not Somebody I’ll Root For’: Johnny Weir

Weir predicts Nicole Scherzinger will win ‘Dancing With the Stars’ finale tonight. By Jocelyn Vena Johnny Weir Photo: MTV News Cutthroat competition is a hallmark of Olympic figure skating. Who could forget that whole kneecap-whacking incident between Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan back in the mid-’90s? These days, the men are also proving to be highly competitive — on and off the ice. As figure skater and “Dancing With the Stars” finalist Evan Lysacek prepares for his last routine on Tuesday’s (May 25) show, fellow skater Johnny Weir has made it clear who he’ll be rooting for. “I don’t [Lysacek should win]. I think Nicole is much better,” Weir told MTV News Monday at the “Sex and the City 2” premiere in New York City. “Evan and I have kind of had a war of words over the past month or so, and he’s not somebody I’ll root for in anything. So, definitely no.” With Lysacek, Nicole Scherzinger and ESPN reporter Erin Andrews set to face off, Weir said he’ll cast his vote for the Pussycat Doll. Asked why he favored Scherzinger over his skating rival Weir responded: “She’s hotter.” But the skater known for his flashy ensembles noted that although Scherzinger seems to have the advantage, Lysacek does have an edge. “Evan’s a professional ice skater,” Weir said. “It’s kind of the same thing.” In the Nicole vs. Evan debate, it’s easy to forget that Andrews could also take home the disco-ball trophy. Still, Weir insisted the sports reporter isn’t really in the running. “No, it’s between Evan and Nicole,” he said. “And Nicole won’t fall down in a pair of seven-inch Louboutins. I think the others would.” Who do you think will win “DWTS?” Tell us in the comments! The Bachelorette: Who Will Become Mr. Ali Fedotowsky?

Who will Ali Fedotowsky choose to spend the rest of her life with? We begin to answer that question this evening on the season premiere of The Bachelorette as 25 aspiring trophy husbands compete for air time her affection. If The Bachelorette spoilers , based on reliable intel, are to be believed, we already know who her final two suitors are … but more on that in just a moment. Regardless, it should be a wild ride for Ali Fedotowsky , the beautiful, energetic and charismatic career-oriented woman who has at last “re-prioritized her life.” The whole “I’m choosing my career” thing was likely a ploy to get out of marrying Jake Pavelka and land this gig, but either way, the soul mate search is on! Beautiful Ali Fedotowsky and host-pimp Chris Harrison are ready to tag-team The Bachelorette starting tonight. In a manner of speaking, of course . Her quest won’t disappoint conflict-hungry fans: “There is definitely a bit of drama,” Ali said. “Rumors are rumors. Whether there is truth to them, I can’t say.” “There was a lot of emotion, good and bad.” We’ve withheld their names so far, but you’re curious, follow the jump to see the two guys supposedly in the running for Ali’s heart on The Bachelorette finale … Chris Lambton was a high school teacher who left teaching in NYC to return home to take care of his ailing mother, who died in 2008. He lives on Cape Cod. He is said to be a good guy who is wary of telling Ali Fedotowsky his story because he doesn’t want sympathy, but rather to have her like him for who he is. A graduate of Providence College, Chris Lambton is 33 and taught public school for about a decade before the aforementioned return to Massachusetts. Ali is also from the Bay State! Will that give Chris an edge?! Not if Roberto Martinez has anything to say about it. The 26-year-old insurance agent is rumored to be the other gentleman in Ali’s final two with Chris. It’s also been said that he was a pro baseball player at some point, but that could be complete BS … or some other Roberto Martinez . You never can tell. While endlessly entertaining, The Bachelorette will embellish any “back story” or conflict to generate ratings, so you can’t really believe what you’re told. That being said, we have it on good authority that these two make the finals. Who do you think Ali will pick, Chris Lambton (left) or Roberto Martinez?

Paula Abdul Returns To TV With ‘Got To Dance’

The former ‘American Idol’ judge will be lead judge on CBS dance show. By Gil Kaufman Paula Abdul Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Paula Abdul said she’d be back in the judge’s chair. Well, a judge’s chair, anyway. A year after walking away from “American Idol,” the former Laker Girl and choreographer to the stars will be returning to TV on the new reality dance show “Got to Dance.” According to the Hollywood Reporter, Abdul will be the lead judge, executive producer, creative partner, mentor and coach on the CBS show that is based on an already popular British dance competition. The network gave a green light to the show in March, and Abdul was long rumored to be one of the top choices for lead judge, in addition to having a number of behind-the-scenes and on-air responsibilities on the show. The program is likely to be a mid-season replacement, which could mean that Abdul will go head-to-head with “Idol” in 2011, which will be in its first season without Abdul former on-air sparring partner Simon Cowell. Cowell is departing after Wednesday’s season-nine finale to concentrate on the 2011 launch of the American version of his hit British reality singing show, “The X Factor.” Abdul was also long rumored to be in the running to join “X Factor,” but appears to have opted instead to headline her own program, which is being billed as broadcast TV’s first all-ages, all-genre dance series, presenting everything from “ballroom to breakdance, bhangra to ballet and tap to tango.” The acts will compete before a panel of judges, and viewers will vote for their favorites during the semifinals and finals. Abdul will be wading into a fiercely competitive market, with ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” already a ratings juggernaut, followed by the popular “So You Think You Can Dance” on her old network, Fox. There are also dancers on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” and a variety of other shows on basic cable networks, including two upcoming CW shows called “One Mass Dance” (about flash-mob-style routines) and “Shed to Wed” (a pre-wedding weight-loss dance-off). Is there space for another dancing show on your viewing schedule? Did Paula make the right choice? Share your thoughts in the comments. Related Artists Paula Abdul

‘Solitary Man’: Star Time, By Kurt Loder

Michael Douglas goes for the gold. Michael Douglas in “Solitary Man” Ben Kalmen is a man who had it all: pots of money from his high-end auto franchise, a beautiful wife and daughter, a lavish Manhattan apartment, the works. Then, because he’s a complete fool, he started throwing it all away. As “Solitary Man” begins, he seems intent on completing that mission. Kalmen is an off-putting character, an ethically oblivious 60-year-old man who slavers after every woman who wanders within range of his come-ons, the younger the better. The triumph of Michael Douglas’ performance in this role is that he plays Kalmen as exactly what he is — a creep — and yet keeps us with him, wondering if this down-bound hustler can possibly come to his senses before he hits bottom — and whether we should even care. As was the case with Jeff Bridges in last year’s “Crazy Heart,” Douglas reveals himself here as a veteran actor, familiar from dozens of other movies over the last 40 years, who’s still capable of doing his best work; who can still surprise us. The picture opens with a flashback: We see Kalmen being told by a doctor that he has a heart problem, and should return for further tests. That was six years ago, and Ben never went back — physical infirmity doesn’t fit in with his self-image as an all-conquering big-city business stud. He subsequently pulled a financial scam in which a lot of people got hurt, and his reputation never recovered — one day he was on the cover of Forbes magazine, dripping success; the next he was pictured in the New York Times in handcuffs. He spent all of his money on the lawyers who barely kept him out of prison. Now we find Kalmen living in an apartment he can’t afford, hitting up his daughter (Jenna Fischer) for loans, and trying to maintain a breezy facade for the sake of his adoring young grandson (Jake Siciliano), whom he begs not to call him grandpa. He’s also dating a well-to-do divorcee named Jordan (Mary-Louise Parker) and struggling to win the approval of her teenage daughter, Allyson (Imogen Poots), which has so far not been forthcoming. Things aren’t going well for Ben, but they could be worse. Actually, they soon will be. Douglas smoothly conveys the personality flaws of which Kalmen is so blindly unaware. Ben is the kind of aging hotshot who still wears black ties with black shirts and who butts into other people’s conversations in order to talk about himself, and the actor gets this overbearing boorishness just right. The supporting cast is pretty much perfect, too. Fischer is especially moving as a woman torn between love for her father and a growing need to banish him from her life; Poots is astringently effective as a girl who’s wised-up way beyond her years; and Susan Sarandon makes concisely underplayed appearances as Ben’s ex-wife, who’s observing his southward spiral from afar. Most surprising, perhaps, is Danny DeVito, who gives a glowing performance as Kalmen’s only true friend, the owner of a diner near the college Ben attended in his long-gone youth. Hovering above the picture is our awareness of a certain resemblance between Ben Kalmen and the man who plays him. Like Ben, Michael Douglas is a highly successful businessman (among the many movies he’s produced is the 1975 Oscar-winner “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”) with a onetime reputation for hard partying (although he says the alcoholism for which he entered rehab 20 years ago was trumped up as “sex addiction” in the press). It seems likely that his well-known past has informed his portrayal of Kalmen, and there’s an element of bravery in his taking on of such an unsympathetic character. Unlike Jeff Bridges (until recently), Douglas already has one Academy Award as an actor (for the 1987 “Wall Street”). It’s too early to bother speculating about whether he could win another for his performance in this film. But he’s already in the running.
