Trailer for RZA’s Man With the Iron Fists: Everybody Is Kung Fu Fighting

It looks like Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA has learned well from his masters — they being the Hong Kong grindhouse filmmakers of yesteryear whose slicing, dicing martial arts exports clearly influenced more than just the rapper-actor’s musical side, not to mention the reigning icon of modern exploitation cinema culture, Quentin Tarantino . Watch Russell Crowe , Lucy Liu , Pam Grier , Jamie Chung , and RZA himself chop, stab, kick, and fight their way through the bloody first redband trailer for The Man with the Iron Fists ! RZA stars in the film as the eponymous man with the iron fists, a small-town blacksmith in feudal China (the kind of fantasy “feudal China” where RZA can play a local and everyone speaks English) who jumps into action in defense of his village, though the trailer smartly glosses over anything resembling a plot and cuts right to the selling point: This cast, equipped with a plethora of weapons, fighting each other as if in a gloriously lush contemporary Shaw Brothers flick. In addition to earning a “Presented by Quentin Tarantino” credit, RZA’s kung fu actioner is co-written by Eli Roth, who also produced. But QT and Roth aren’t the only veterans RZA surrounded himself with for his feature directing debut: He’s got Corey Yuen onboard as fight choreographer and Chi Ying Chan ( Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame ) as DP, along with a host of supporting cast members plucked from the worlds of action and Chinese film, including Dave Bautista, Cung Le, Daniel Wu, Rick Yune, and Gordon Liu. CG blood squibs too-frequently come off as a silly workaround, so it’ll remain to be seen just how these fight sequences play within the film. But the glimpses we see here promise inventive framing and action choreography, not to mention some painful-looking bladed weapons and a studied eye for the genre. Verdict: Where can I sign up for Lucy Liu’s school of killing for girls?? O-Ren Ishii lives on! Synopsis: Quentin Tarantino presents The Man With the Iron Fists, an action-adventure inspired by kung-fu classics as interpreted by his longtime collaborators RZA and Eli Roth. Making his debut as a big-screen director and leading man, RZA—alongside a stellar international cast led by Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu—tells the epic story of warriors, assassins and a lone outsider hero in nineteenth-century China who must unite to destroy the clan traitor who would destroy them all. Since his arrival in China’s Jungle Village, the town’s blacksmith (RZA) has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction. When the clans’ brewing war boils over, the stranger channels an ancient energy to transform himself into a human weapon. As he fights alongside iconic heroes and against soulless villains, one man must harness this power to become savior of his adopted people. Blending astonishing martial-arts sequences from some of the masters of this world with the signature vision he brings as the leader of the Wu-Tang Clan and as one of hip-hop’s most dominant figures of the past two decades, RZA embarks upon his most ambitious, stylized and thrilling project to date. On top of this, we’ve got the first few images from the film. This one’s quite eye-popping, indeed. Oh, and have you seen the poster for Man with the Iron Fists ? I can’t not get excited about this. Pam Grier on Jackie Brown, Quentin Tarantino, and Her Reign as the Queen of ’70s Action Cinema

Grindhouse icon Pam Grier blazed a trail through the blaxploitation era, was dubbed “the baddest One-Chick Hit-Squad that ever hit town” (a title that remains uncontested four decades later, one might argue), and commanded the screen with a combination of ferocity, empathy, and a look so striking Roger Ebert once described her as an “actress of beautiful face and astonishing form.” Years later, in 1997, Quentin Tarantino paid homage to the work and the woman in Jackie Brown , adapted from Elmore Leonard’s Rum Punch , one of the filmmaker’s best and most underrated films and the spark that jump-started a career revival for its stars.

RZA Teases Unreleased ODB Material

‘When you got an estate, it’s so much paperwork and red tape and legal stuff you gotta deal with,’ Wu-Tang mastermind says of late friend’s music. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Adam Murphy RZA Photo: MTV News Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nothin’ ta eff wit, and neither are the RZA ‘s beats. While in Berlin promoting his new headphone line Chambers by Rza, the Wu producer told MTV News that he has given beats to a number of hip-hop artists, including Nas, Busta Rhymes and Ludacris, as well as his cousin and Wu-partner GZA for his Liquid Swords 2 album. “Me and GZA talked about doing Liquid Swords part 2, a sequel. We talked about it for a while,” RZA said about the follow-up to GZA’s 1996 album. “We actually started a little and then we pulled back based on scheduling, based on my movie.” RZA’s love affair with Hollywood is no secret. As an actor, Bobby Digital has appeared in “American Gangster” alongside Russell Crowe and has recently been cast in “G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes.” RZA has also been hard at work directing “The Man With the Iron Fists,” a movie set in feudal China which will star Russell Crowe, Pam Grier and Lucy Liu. “The movie has taken me out of the loop of music. But what I have been doing, I’ve been going to studios and inviting people to my studio. So I went to the studio with Luda and I emptied beats from my beat machine for him. Whether he use it or not is up to him, but I just been emptying out my beat machines,” RZA said before revealing more of his collaborative hopefuls. “I emptied out some beats on Busta, I emptied out some beats on Nas, emptied out some beats for [Ghostface Killah] and for Wu-Tang Clan — just sent them 20 beats a few weeks ago.” Though he is very passionate about making movies at the moment, RZA knows music is what got him where he is today. “I really want to put a lot of my energy into film, but I know that I got here because of music and I know people dig my music. And I’m like, ‘Why not put the music out there too?’ ” Judging from his activity, it is a safe bet that fans can hear a lot of new RZA music in the near future, but anyone expecting to hear collaborations between the producer and his cousin, the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard, shouldn’t get their hopes up. While the Abbot does confirm that he has plenty of unreleased Ol’ Dirty material, releasing those tunes are quite difficult. “That’s a very tricky situation, because ODB has passed and he has an estate,” he said. “When you got an estate, it’s so much paperwork and red tape and legal stuff you gotta deal with. I tried to put out a song last year called ‘Dirt’s the Boogie,’ and they threatened me with an injunction and I wrote the lyrics to the song. Made the beat, wrote the lyrics and Dirty just performed it.” Instead of holding onto the work, though, RZA is contemplating leaving the unheard recordings to Dirty’s son when the time is right. “I will tell the fans, I do have a few 2-inch reels of material nobody has but me. I don’t know what I’ll do with it,” he said. “Maybe in time I’ll just give it to his son, I don’t know.” Do you want to hear RZA’s ODB tapes? Let us know in the comments! Is Eli Roth Co-Directing RZA’s Kung Fu Epic?

An air of mystery (and, understandably, confusion) has surrounded the awesome-in-theory directorial debut of Wu-Tang Clan rapper-turned-actor RZA, who began filming his period kung fu epic The Man with the Iron Fists last month in China. With the plot largely under wraps — it involves a weapons-forging blacksmith in feudal China to be played by RZA himself, because of course! — production details from the period film have been kept largely on the hush, aside from co-producer / co-writer Eli Roth’s colorful tweets from the set. That is, until a few cast members began posting (non-spoilery) reports from the set describing how things are going.
