ABC’s Terry Moran Frets that ‘Republican Reformist’ Schwarzenegger Is Being ‘Squeezed Out’ of GOP

Nightline’s Terry Moran on Wednesday profiled Arnold Schwarzenegger as a “Republican reformist” and never once referred to him as a liberal. Instead, the co-anchor tagged the California Governor as a “lonely figure” in the GOP. Moran sympathized, “When you look at the way the Republican Party is going, here in California and around the country, rise of the tea party, candidates like Rand Paul, do you think there’s still room in the Republican Party for someone like you?” He then prompted, ” Or are you being squeezed out? ” Of course, most Republicans in California and nationwide would say that Schwarzenegger’s embrace of liberalism indicates someone who left the party, rather than being “forced out.” Although Moran noted the Governor’s massive unpopularity (his approval rating hovers around 23 percent), he never really explained why. The host also noted the state’s $19 billion deficit, but not the excessive spending. Instead, Moran spun, ” He sounds pragmatic, though many of his reform efforts have failed .” Throughout his two terms, journalists have often favored Schwarzenegger as an example of the ideal Republican. On November 20, 2006, CNN’s Bill Schneider enthused, “In California, Schwarzenegger carried independent voters handily. He reclaimed the center. Schwarzenegger did two things President Bush has never done. He flatly acknowledged his mistakes, and he changed course.” A transcript of the June 9 segment, which aired at 11:45pm EDT, follows: TERRY MORAN: Arnold Schwarzenegger. He rose from big screen action hero to Republican reformist in charge of governing California. But this real-life script hasn’t exactly enjoyed a Hollywood happy ending. Now he’s staring down his final months in office, and he’s going to end his term on something of a down note. So, what has he learned about politics and what’s next? I spent the day with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. On primary night in California last night, the big political stars of the state took center stage. But the guy who once dominated California politics, who seemed poised a few years back to usher in a new era in the Golden State, like Ronald Reagan before him, he was out of the limelight, strangely muted. These are difficult days for Arnold Schwarzenegger, and for a guy who has lived his life in the limelight, from his championship body building days immortalized in the documentary Pumping Iron, to his Hollywood career, built on indomitable action roles like The Terminator and Conan the Barbarian. [Clips from Schwarzenegger’s movies.] SCHWARZENEGGER: You see capital gains taxes going up. MORAN: The real world of politics has not been easy for California’s Governor, and for all his relentless self-confidence, he knows it. You’ve become a very unpopular governor. SCHWARZENEGGER: You know something, it’s perfectly fine. I understand the mood. I don’t blame the people for being upset about what’s going on. MORAN: What’s going on in California is a colossal grinding fiscal and political crisis with no end in sight. A $19 billion deficit in the state’s budget. A political system in such deep partisan gridlock it makes Washington look almost functional. It’s all a recipe for deep voter disgust. And a lot of that anger is aimed right at Schwarzenegger, who has seen his approval rating collapse to 23 percent, with seven in ten saying they disapprove with the way he’s done his job. But he is determined to keep pushing. We caught up with Schwarzenegger last week aboard the USS Midway Museum in San Diego, where he was unveiling Operation Welcome Home. It’s an ambitious effort to help returning veterans in the state. SCHWARZENEGGER: We want them to move smoothly from the battlefront to the home front. MORAN: The goal? Streamline the sometimes confusing process of coming home. SCHWARZENEGGER: We are saying to the veterans, you don’t have to run around anymore. You don’t have to get the runaround. No, you just go to one place, you call and we will pay attention. MORAN: It’s the kind of program tailor made for Schwarzenegger right now. It’s got bipartisan support. It doesn’t cost much. It’s doable. Because the last thing Schwarzenegger wants to talk about, even think about now, is the end of his career as governor. And this is really a major initiative of what are your last months in office, yeah? SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, it doesn’t matter if it is my last months in office, which it’s not. It’s my last year in office. But you know, this is irrelevant. I mean we continue on until the last. We sprint to the finish line. MORAN: Schwarzenegger, though, is sprinting on his own, a lonely figure on the state’s political landscape, and in the national GOP. When you look at the way the Republican Party is going, here in California and around the country, rise of the tea party, candidates like Rand Paul, do you think there’s still room in the Republican Party for someone like you? Or are you being squeezed out? SCHWARZENEGGER: I don’t feel like I’m getting squeezed out. I feel like I need reforms. It’s not the Republican Party. It’s not the Democratic Party. It’s the system that is wrong. What we want to do is create a system where you get rewarded for compromise, rather than get punished for compromise and rewarded for getting stuck in the ideological corners. CAMPAIGN AD: After Arnold, don’t we deserve a Republican? MORAN: Schwarzenegger was hammered this primary season by Republicans running away from him and Democrats trashing him. But, Arnold Schwarzenegger is far from the only incumbent politician getting trashed these days. [Video of tea partiers.] As President Obama struggles with a stumbling economic recovery and an environmental disaster in the gulf, Arnold sounds like he’s got some sympathy for him. As a governor, how do you rate President Obama and his administration’s response to the oil spill in the gulf? SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, I mean, I think that he’s doing everything that he can. And everything that he’s doing to his knowledge. There is no one in the political arena that is an expert it in, so we all rely on experts to tell us, you know, what is the thing to do. MORAN: As the oil continues to gush into the waters of the gulf, Schwarzenegger is blunt about the blame. SCHWARZENEGGER: I think one should not lose sight of one thing. Why do we have this problem? The problem is because we failed as a country to force the oil companies to have a safety device, which, European countries have. What’s the safety feature? What device do you have? Nothing, because they lobbied and Congress voted against it. MORAN: There are people who say that because of the scale of this catastrophe, BP should, essentially, be put out of business. SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, you know, that’s all easier said than done. You can’t go just now and say this is the worst company, let’s put them out of business when the fact is that 95 percent of our, you know, energy comes from fossil fuels. I mean it’s, I think, crazy talk. MORAN: He sounds pragmatic, though many of his reform efforts have failed . But yesterday, primary day, a triumph. A Schwarzenegger-backed ballot measure that would do away with party-controlled primaries in favor of open primaries, passed handily. SCHWARZENEGGER: You will see extraordinary change in a direction that California will be going and the kind of decisions that will be made here. MORAN: And then there are programs like Operation Welcome home, something that can get done for returning soldiers like Lance Yonker. LANCE YONKER (RETURNING SOLDER): Plastic surgeon put this ear back on and put my head together with 70 staples. And, you know, I had to learn how to walk again and do all that, and, you know, I’ve seen the worst of it, and Operation Welcome Home and everything that’s going on here has really helped me. MORAN: So, as the race to succeed him revs up, Arnold Schwarzenegger is looking to make a mark where he can. And given the state’s deep and intractable problems, a question, did California terminate the governator? The old body building competitor just won’t have it. SCHWARZENEGGER: You never have the surrender kind of attitude. I remember Munich, trying to break a record, I couldn’t. It was 500 pounds on the bench press. And I tried it many times after that, but the 11th time, I did it. So, people fail in sports, people fail all the time in many other things. That doesn’t mean that you give up. It means that you continue on and you keep saying, “I’ll be back.” That is the important thing. MORAN: He’ll be back. And Schwarzenegger told me he won’t think about what he’ll do next until the day he leaves office.

Michael Jackson Fans To Have Access To Cemetery On Anniversary Of His Death

Forest Lawn cemetery is providing limited access to grounds, but not to mausoleum where King of Pop is buried. By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Sony Fans all over the world are likely preparing for the one-year anniversary of ‘s death on June 25, and officials in Los Angeles are planning to help them commemorate the sad occasion. According to the Jackson’s fans are expected to get limited access to the Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California, in two weeks to mark the anniversary. In plans expected to be finalized this week, Jackson’s admirers will be allowed onto the grounds of the cemetery but not into the Great Mausoleum, where the singer’s body was interred in September. “We understand that Forest Lawn is working with the Jackson family for some kind of commemoration,” said Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz. “We will be working closely with Forest Lawn to ensure the safety of those who want to pay their respects to Michael Jackson while ensuring the safety of others who are coming to the cemetery to pay respects to their loved ones.” Though fans will not be allowed in the Great Mausoleum, discussions are still ongoing about how close they will be allowed to get to the structure, which is also the final resting place of such Hollywood legends as Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow and Red Skelton. “Basically, they will be viewing it from a distance,” Lorenz said. Jackson died on June 25 after suffering cardiac arrest at his rented Hollywood mansion. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office ruled that the 50-year-old singer died of “acute Propofol intoxication” in combination with the use of sedatives. Authorities have claimed that his personal physician, cardiologist Conrad Murray, administered a lethal dose of the surgical anesthetic to chronic insomniac Jackson in an attempt to help him get to sleep. Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter in February in connection with Jackson’s death and has pleaded not guilty in the case. The doctor is out on $75,000 bail and faces up to four years in prison if convicted. Related Photos Michael Jackson: A Life In Photos Related Artists Michael Jackson

BP’s Atlantis: Another Catastrophic Accident Waiting to Happen? Facts on Atlantis, BP and the Administration

May 17th, 2010 BP’s Atlantis: Another Catastrophic Accident Waiting to Happen? The Gulf of Mexico is currently reeling from the human and environmental tragedy unfolding after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon, an offshore oil platform. The Horizon, operated by BP, exploded on April 20, 2010, killing 11 workers, injuring many others and spilling millions of gallons of oil into the ocean. While the cause of the Horizon explosion is being investigated, it is important to note that BP has a devastating history of accidents and evading government oversight. Worse yet, an even bigger tragedy in the Gulf could be looming. An internal BP email admits that a “catastrophic” accident is possible at another one of its platforms, the BP Atlantis. An accident at this platform could result in a spill that is many times larger than the one currently unfolding from the Deepwater Horizon. BP Atlantis poses a serious, immediate and potentially irreparable threat to the Gulf of Mexico’s marine environment, oil workers and communities. BP’s Atlantis platform became active during the Bush administration in October of 2007. Located in “Hurricane Alley,” more than 150 miles from New Orleans at a water depth of more than 7,000 feet, it is one of the deepest moored semisubmersible oil and gas platforms in the world. In August of 2008, a BP contractor made a startling discovery about Atlantis: The company was operating the massive Atlantis platform without proper up-to-date and engineer-approved documentation. Some of the problems included: * More than 6,000 critical documents — including those for pipelines, flowlines, wellheads and other important systems — did not have the required engineering documentation. * Over 85 percent of the project’s subsea piping and instrument diagrams, critical documents for operating the platform, were not approved by engineers. * Many of its safety shutdown system logic diagrams were not up to date. * Over 95 percent of its subsea welding documents had no final engineering approval, calling into question the safety of the welds. Workers clean oil from the Horizon spill from a beach in South Pass, Louisiana. Photo by the U.S. Coast Guard. Atlantis is no small threat. An internal BP email characterized the situation as having the potential for “catastrophic operator errors.” Worse yet, Atlantis is operating in deeper water than the Deepwater Horizon. A worst-case scenario oil spill from Atlantis would exceed the Exxon Valdez spill in only two days, and be many times larger than the spill from the Horizon explosion. BP’s Big Oil Profits The BP group is the largest oil and gas producer and one of the largest gasoline retailers in the United States, and in 2008 was the fourth-biggest company in the world. In 2009, BP was the largest producer in the Gulf of Mexico and had pre-tax profits of $25.1 billion. BP Evades Compliance and the Federal Government Fails to Take Action Despite questions from Food & Water Watch and Members of Congress, BP has chosen to deny the problems at Atlantis. The company went so far as to send a letter to Congress saying that it only learned of the allegations recently and claimed they were unsubstantiated. However, BP’s own documents show that BP has known about these problems for years. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS), the primary federal agency responsible for ensuring that all aspects of oil, gas, leasing, exploration, development and production activities are conducted safely, hasn’t been doing its job. The agency did almost nothing when the whistleblower and Food & Water Watch first reported the problems at BP Atlantis and alerted members of Congress. An aerial view of the progress of the Horizon oil spill off the coast of Louisiana as of May 9, 2010. Photo by NASA. It was only after 19 members of Congress requested an investigation that MMS said it would conduct an investigation starting in March 2010. By May 2010, however, according to an agency response to a Food & Water Watch Freedom of Information Act request, the agency admitted that it had not and would not take any steps to investigate. Take Action to Shut Down BP Atlantis Tell President Obama to shut down Atlantis. Given the seriousness of the situation, production at the Atlantis platform must be immediately suspended until it can be proven safe. In addition, President Obama needs to order a review of all deepwater platforms in operation and overhaul offshore drilling regulations to reflect public interests, not private profits. Take action today by going to spillthetruth.org. Visit www.foodandwaterwatch.org/press/atlantis for more information. The agency, along with a former BP document controls subcontractor, maintains the Department of the Interior has allowed BP Atlantis to operate without documented, approved final engineering drawings considered critical to safe operation. Minerals Management Service Replaced. Obama "Ending cozy relationship between MMS and Gas and Oil Companies

Today Obama administration replaced the Minerals Management Service, creating the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and the Office of Natural Resources Revenue. Excerpts (GO READ THE ARTICLE!) Bloomberg Obama Replaces Offshore Agency Faulted in BP Spill (Update2) May 19, 2010, 3:06 PM EDT (Updates with Salazar comment in fourth paragraph. See {EXT4 } for more on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.)) By Jim Efstathiou Jr. May 19 (Bloomberg) — The Obama administration replaced the Minerals Management Service, faulted for lax regulation of offshore drilling before the BP Plc spill last month, with three offices to oversee leases, drilling safety and fee collection. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar signed an order today creating the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and the Office of Natural Resources Revenue. President Barack Obama said on May 15 that he would end the “cozy relationship” between companies that drill for oil and gas and the Minerals Management Service, part of the Interior Department. Its track record has been scrutinized since the BP well blew up on April 20, killing 11 workers and creating an oil spill that continues to spread toward Gulf Coast states from Louisiana to Florida. http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-05-19/obama-replaces-offshore-agency-fault… ============== Well I am glad to see some action being taken. Lets hope this is a sign of better things to come from teh White House. What do you think about it? added by: twohawks

Wal-Mart still selling Miley Cyrus cadmium jewelry

R U SERIOUS!!! CADMIUM HAS NO CONSTRUCTIVE PURPOSE AROUND THE HUMAN BODY! CADMIUM AND ITS COMPOUNDS ARE EXTREMELY TOXIC EVEN IN LOW CONCENTRATIONS! IT WILL BIOACCUMALATE IN ORGANISMS AND THE ECOSYSTEM! LOS ANGELES – Jewelry from two entire lines being sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide, including bracelets and necklaces branded by Miley Cyrus, contains high levels of the toxic metal cadmium, according to an Associated Press investigation. Testing of 61 samples purchased by AP reporters across the country from a Cyrus line and from a series of make-it-yourself metal bracelet charms indicated that 59 of the pieces contained at least 5 percent cadmium by weight, with 53 of those measuring 10 percent or higher. And the world's largest retailer knows the items are tainted. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. received test results in February showing cadmium in these jewelry lines, but has continued selling the items. Instead, Wal-Mart revealed in an April 26 statement that as of April 9, it was requiring suppliers to show through tests at a company-approved lab that children's jewelry and other kids' products had little cadmium — or else Wal-Mart would not accept the items for sale. The policy did not apply to products already on store shelves. A Wal-Mart executive told a Consumer Product Safety Commission hearing that testing items already in stores would be too difficult. In its only comment for this story, Wal-Mart said the Miley Cyrus jewelry was for “juniors,” without defining that age range. Representatives for Miley Cyrus and BCBGMaxAzria did not comment when asked. To judge the extent of the ongoing availability of pieces that Wal-Mart knew were contaminated, AP dispatched reporters throughout the country last month. They purchased any of 13 items matching those on the test results the company had in February. Those items came from two product lines: three were Miley Cyrus jewelry, a project done with designer BCBGMaxAzria; the other 10 were from a series of make-it-yourself metal bracelet charms. The packaging said they were made in China; all were bought for $6 or less. All but one of the 13 was on store shelves in the eight states where AP reporters looked. At AP's request, the purchased items were then tested by Prof. Jeff Weidenhamer, a chemist at Ashland University in Ohio. He said the average cadmium content was 16 percent, and that the levels are probably higher. Weidenhamer's prior research has shown that the testing method he used — an X-ray gun that can roughly tell the amount of cadmium in an item — typically underestimates how much is present. Representatives of the jewelry industry have argued that the presence of cadmium, even at high levels, is not by itself proof that an item is dangerous. The important thing, they say, isn't how much cadmium is in jewelry but rather how much can escape if the item is sucked, bitten or swallowed. Cadmium in children's jewelry became a public concern in January when the AP published the results of an investigation that showed items at Walmarts — and other large chains — were as much as 91 percent of the toxic metal by weight. Federal regulators have since issued three recalls, including one affecting “The Princess and The Frog” movie themed pendants sold at Walmarts. Long-term exposure to cadmium can lead to bone softening and kidney failure. It is a known carcinogen that recent research suggests can, like lead, hinder brain development in the very young. While AP's January investigation focused on jewelry clearly intended for children, the items tested for AP this time were labeled “not intended for children under 14 years.” That is an important legal distinction: Under current regulation, children's items are defined as for kids 12 and under, and children's products have all kinds of regulations that others do not. Federal regulators' own research says that kids start becoming interested in making their own jewelry around age six or eight. As for products featuring Miley Cyrus — she is 17 and thanks to the “Hannah Montana” franchise, her appeal dips down to kids as young as five. The importer of the charms for make-it-yourself bracelets, Cousin Corp. of America, said the jewelry was targeted at adults. Roy Gudgeon, vice president of merchandise at Florida-based Cousin, said that didn't mean high cadmium levels were acceptable. “We recognize that many of our adult customers are homemakers who may have children present in their home,” he said. “Our intention as a company is to never willingly cause harm to a child.” After checking company records, Gudgeon said that it had imported more than 300,000 of the charms that Weidenhamer tested. Shipment figures were not immediately available for the Miley Cyrus items. ___ added by: onemalefla
