Shark Week Begins With Andy Samberg’s ‘In Your Face’ Shark Officer

‘Saturday Night Live’ funnyman serves as Chief Shark Officer for Discovery Channel’s annual shark fest. By Eric Ditzian Andy Samberg Photo: MTV News It’s Shark Week , people! It’s that time of year when it’s too damn hot to go outside and we’re all too willing to embrace a shameless and brilliant marketing ploy in which Discovery Channel devotes much of its schedule to the sharp-toothed fishies and we stay glued to the TV because the whole thing honestly is freaking badass. To wit, get ready this week for documentaries called “Shark Feeding Frenzy,” “Sharkman,” “Air Jaws: Sharks of South Africa” and “Top Five Eaten Alive.” Yes, the narration will be heavy on machismo, the soundtracks will veer between horror-movie strings and staccato, annoy-your-neighbors bass lines, and the whole thing will be overseen by Andy Samberg . We’re not exactly sure why, and we’re certainly not complaining, but the “Saturday Night Live” funnyman has been appointed Discovery’s first-ever Chief Shark Officer. Tops among his awesome responsibilities, we found out during a chat with Samberg and his Lonely Islands pals this spring, is the requirement that the CSO taunt all non-CSOs. “Chief Shark Officer! In your face, other dudes!” he cracked. “We’re kind of the Chief Shark brain trust on this,” Jorma Taccone offered. “No, you guys haven’t helped me at all on this,” Samberg shot back with killer instinct. So it’s Samberg and Samberg alone guiding us through the hazards and happiness of Shark Week. Can he handle the pressure? After debuting in 1987, the weeklong block of programming was watched by almost 31 million people last year — the highest-rated shark-themed week in Discovery’s history. Samberg ain’t scared. “I’ve already been in the water with sharks,” he said of a trip to the Bahamas to shoot promotional material for the week. “Did you get to slap five with a shark?” Taccone wanted to know. “Yes, me and a shark slapped five!” Samberg replied. Are you looking forward to the Samberg-helmed Shark Week? Let us know in the comments!

Nicki Minaj, Mark Zuckerberg Shake Up ‘Saturday Night Live’

Facebook founder meets onscreen alter egos Jesse Eisenberg and Andy Samberg, while Minaj rocks the stage and hilarious sketches. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Performs “Moment 4 Life” on “SNL” Photo: NBC Jesse Eisenberg just scored an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Facebook wunderkind Mark Zuckerberg, and on “Saturday Night Live” he got the chance to share the screen with his real-life inspiration. After Eisenberg prattled on about how confident he is in comparison to the characters he often plays, Andy Samberg crashed “The Social Network” star’s opening monologue as a bratty version of Zuckerberg. The two compared their Zuckerberg styles — Eisenberg speaks in short sentences, while Samberg just wears a sweatshirt and says “I’m Mark Zuckerberg” — while the real social media whiz chopped it up backstage with “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels. Eventually, the 26-year-old billionaire took the stage, and when it was revealed that Eisenberg and Zuckerberg have never met, Samberg quipped, “Awkward!” and ran off. Zuckerberg then called the Oscar-nominated tale of the origins of Facebook “interesting,” and Eisenberg graciously let the Internet entrepreneur introduce the show. Eisenberg assumed a number of alter egos on Saturday’s broadcast, like the horny adolescent who rubbed balloons on his partner’s private parts during a demonstration of static electricity on “Mr. Wizard’s World.” The “Network” actor also turned up as a hapless contestant on VH1’s “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” who blurts out whatever’s on his mind, like belting “one extra testicle” instead singing Robert Palmer’s “A Bad Case of Lovin’ You.” The star also turned up in a sketch reminiscent of his “Network” performance, as a college student who gets roped into a television interview with a surly, geriatric reporter who easily loses his train of thought and continuously slams his mic into Eisenberg’s face. Eisenberg also appeared as a castmember of MTV’s “Skins” who is reduced to hawking fried chicken and used cars by reciting clumsy product-placement lines, and paired with Samberg once again for an ad for “El Shrinko,” a product that reduces man bits to a size the ladies like — or so they say. Eisenberg also joined forces with musical guest Nicki Minaj for the “Bride of Blackenstein” sketch. Minaj played a bootylicious but mouthy creation of a groovy evil genius while Eisenberg hobbled along as the hunchbacked flunky. Minaj also rocked a digital short as a geeky voyeur with an affinity for eyeing folks during inappropriate times like, say, a funeral, and even showed viewers how to do the Peeping Tom-approved dance “The Creep.” In addition to showing off her funny side, the Trinidadian-born MC also treated viewers to two theatrical stage performances. Minaj first played “Right Thru Me,” taking the stage in a voluminous mauve ball gown made of frilly tiers as pink-tinted fog enveloped the set. The star topped off the dress with a two-toned version of the Gumby-shaped wig that captivated fans when she recently hit London. Perhaps it was the gigantic gown, but Minaj stayed put for most of the song. However, she did keep the energy up by dipping in and out of her animated voices. Minaj ditched the princess look for a funky colorful bodysuit for “Moment 4 Life.” She also swapped out her Gumby wig for the towering, streaky hairpiece from her “Bride of Blackenstein” sketch, and added thigh-high magenta boots. This time, Minaj took advantage of the stage, energetically strutting around. The MC crouched and gyrated throughout the set as she showed off her singing skills, and wrapped up the performance with a dramatic pose and sneer — the type of out-of-nowhere zaniness her fans have come to crave. “I mean, to be raised in New York, and to always hear about ‘SNL,’ ” Minaj told MTV News last week. “I never had the honor of getting a pinkie toe in the building, now [I’m] here and it feels incredible.” What did you think of “SNL” this week? Paul McCartney, Paul Rudd Buddy Up On ‘Saturday Night Live’

Beatles legend and ‘How Do You Know’ star team up for a digital short on NBC hit. By Mawuse Ziegbe Paul McCartney and Paul Rudd on “SNL” on Dec. 11, 2010 Photo: NBC “Saturday Night Live” was packed with Pauls, from a rock icon to a newbie comedian. Second time host Paul Rudd played up the plethora of fellas with the name during his opening monologue, claiming credit for the fan mania that was clearly the result of rock legend Paul McCartney’s on-set presence as musical guest. Rudd smugly remarked about a woman crying and people chanting “Yesterday,” until the Beatles icon appeared onstage to clear up the brouhaha. Featured “SNL” player Paul Brittain also briefly joined the Paul-fest. For the most part, the two stuck to what they’re each known for, with Rudd dishing out the laughs and McCartney serving up the music. In one sketch, Rudd brings his girlfriend home for the holidays to meet his super affectionate family who make out and grope each other to the horror of his gal pal. Rudd also turns up as a gay man who heads to a relationship expert’s talk show for advice, only to get ridiculed by her stodgy, ignorant producer who had to fill in because she was sick. The “How Do You Know” star also competed in the faux game show “What’s That Name,” handily identifying pop culture figures like Subway spokesman Jared Fogel and fumbling when faced with naming his doorman of four years. Rudd also flexed his comedic chops as a nerdy math teacher tasked with mounting a holiday party for students and ends up geekifying the whole affair by dropping zingers like “off the hoof” and “elf esteem.” Rudd and McCartney did cross paths once again in the digital short “Stumblin’ ” in which Andy Samberg and Rudd play buddies who tagger through life, always seconds away from falling over outright. McCartney inexplicably pops up mid-segment in a ruffled blouse and velvet blazer to croon ’80s ballad “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin. Then he whips out a miniscule harmonica, dons cowboy gear and goes to town with Rudd and Samberg cheering him on. McCartney confined the goofiness to the Samberg skit, taking the stage first with “Jet” from Wings’ 1973 Band on the Run LP. The rock luminary strummed the straightforward jam, bopping along in a purple blazer, and adding a flourish of a boogie-woogie dance at the end. McCartney followed up with another Wings hit, “Band on the Run,” for his second performance, ditching the blazer for skinny red suspenders and punctuating the set with guttural howls. 16 Suggested Song Titles For the Ill-Advised American Psycho Musical

Christmas arrived early for fans of both Bret Easton Ellis and musicals this morning via the announcement that the author’s 1991 novel American Psycho — which was memorably adapted into a feature film starring Christian Bale — is being transformed again, this time into musical form. In celebration of this news — and in hopes that it avoids the same disastrous Broadway fate as Spiderman — Movieline suggests a few song titles that composer Duncan Sheik (“Spring Awakening”) will hopefully consider for the first draft, which is expected next year.

The Wachowskis’ Colbalt Neutral 9 to Feature Gay Sex, Assassination Attempt

Been curious about what the Wachowskis were planning for Cobalt Neutral 9 , their gay love story set during the Iraq War? Vulture reports that the film will revolve around “found footage” (think Cloverfield ) of an American soldier named Butch, his gay Iraqi lover and their assassination attempt against then-president George W. Bush. In addition to that hot button plot turn, the two lovers will also have “graphically described sex” while wearing burqas. Needless to say, the Wachowskis are reportedly considering self-financing this one. [ Vulture ]
